wait wait wait guys have you ever thought about how the Mighty Nein are everything they shouldn’t be upon first glance
no no guys guys listen to me they’re all the antithesis of what they’re meant to be and that’s why they’re such amazing and heartfelt characters
like, Caleb is a wizard who’s afraid of his own fire magic. his own power causes him to falter in battle. his strongest spells are his most dangerous to himself. wizards are supposed to be prideful of their magic, but Caleb’s is the reason he hates himself
Beau is a monk who never wanted to be. her job is one that people normally associate with being calm and collected and Beau was a wild rebellious kid who got dragged into this line of work against her will. she never wanted to be this!! but now she is and she’s gotta deal with it!!
Fjord is a warlock who never wanted power from his pact, which is why you’d think a warlock would make their pact at all. but no. Fjord made his pact because he wanted to live, not because he wanted power. he was a scared orphan who hated his tusks, not a buff, muscled, angry half-orc like people assumed
Nott is NOT, that’s the whole crux of her narrative! she wasn’t pretty, like a halfling girl was supposed to be. she wasn’t a goblin, she was just transformed into one. and not only that, but despite being a three-foot-tall alcoholic kleptomaniac, she’s the mom of the group!
Jester is a Cleric whose god isn’t actually a god and who would much rather bash bad guys over the head with her lollipop than have to stop and heal her friends!! she’s a bubbly, optimistic ray-of-sunshine, but you know when she says she’s gonna change the world with friendship she means it as a threat
Mollymauk is an amnesiac, but he doesn’t want to remember who he was. if you ask him, that wasn’t him! he might be a flirtatious hedonistic carnie, but he’s also single-mindedly devoted to making the world a better and more loved place than it was when he found it. he’s a liar, but he means well. he’s an arrogant fool, yes, but he’s right! he did it! he left it better!
Caduceus seems like he’d be creepy and grim from growing up in a graveyard, but he’s actually the most chill out of the entire Nein by far. he’s calm, he’s sweet, and he’s comforting, more than anything else. you’d think he’d be amazed by seeing the outside world for the first time, but he spends the whole time knowing that one day he’ll return home, that he wasn’t supposed to be the one to leave
Yasha is a barbarian with skeletal wings and a dramatic, monochromatic look, but she’s a complete sweetheart. she’s Molly’s best friend, she was a carnival bouncer, she’s a lesbian disaster who collects pressed flowers in a book out of love for the wife she lost. those black wings were actually hiding soft white feathers
Essek was born straight into the den of politics, he was a spymaster, he literally started a war for his own gain, and yet. he’s sounds irredeemable on paper, but. he’s not!! sure, the Nein kind of have to drag his alignment kicking and screaming into neutral, but they manage it. Essek learns and grows and he overcomes his nature. he becomes good, against all odds
guys guys guys don’t you see it!! look at them!!they’re such compelling characters!! they’re everything they’re not supposed to be!! dude y’all how didn’t I realize this earlier!! they subvert their narratives in the most interesting ways ever and I justhshsbhshshsjnsmshsnhsfn!!

Of the principles in Cultist Simulator, some seem easier than others to get a feeling for what the common thread is meant to be in their themes, and Heart seemed like one of the more confusing to me, but I feel like I have a better idea of it now after having thought about it in the context of literal hearts. I know in theory that the heart is made of a different kind of muscle from the skeletal muscle, and it's specialised to work continuously, but intuitively it feels weird that it never rests. It speeds up and slows down as needed, but it never stops. If you're lucky, your heart may beat continuously for a hundred years, never pausing once in all that time. If it's injured, it just heals while working. If it's not strong enough for the demands placed on it, it gets stronger while working. Normal muscles need a mixture of work and rest to get stronger, but not the heart, or at least not in the same way. If it pauses for just a minute, that's a life-threatening emergency. Occasionally (particularly if I have a blocked nose), I feel tired of breathing, and take a break for half a minute or so. I suppose there are even multiple sets of muscles that work the lungs, so if one can't be used, others can temporarily take over. With the heart that's not an option, it just has to keep going. If you think about all this, does your heart feel tired? Mine does. I assume it's just psychological. They're built for this after all. I can't remember if I've read anything about Heart Longs, but whatever it is they do, it must be exhausting, but perhaps they're built for it too. If Longs even have muscles, are all of a Heart Long's muscles cardiac muscle? I assume percussigants lack the ability to become tired. The heart must work continuously, because its work is the work of staying alive. It isn't the only part of the body with this property, but it is one of the most visible and obvious. This links in to another of the themes of Heart, vitality. Both Heart and Nectar relate to life, but I think a large part of the difference is that Heart is life like warm-blooded animals live it, needing to constantly keep going because if it stops it will never start again, while Nectar relates more to the much more chill lifestyle of plants. Vitality provides the ability to keep going through hardship, but the continuous act of living is also what creates vitality. Joy, too, inspires action over rest. Most of the game's curses can be overcome with Heart. I guess you just need to persevere and outlast them. The principles generally have something a bit creepy about them, something that's just too much. I think this is what that is for Heart, even though it's one of the more overtly positive Principles. Possibly I'm overgeneralising from a few examples. I'm not sure I can actually describe all the other principles this way. Perhaps it's silly to put too much thought into understanding the principle of Heart, given there is no deep truth to be discovered here in real life, it's just a bundle of associations that the authors put together. That doesn't mean it's not something that can be understood though. The games are well-written, with thought put into fitting things together in a way that makes sense.

Rabbid Lore Headcanon: Hopefully Close As Possible To Canon With Some Insane Reaches
Rabbid Biology?
Mortality:
Aside from their eerily humanoid body, stubby legs, mitten hands, buck teeth, and bulging eyes, one of their most startling traits is being borderline immortal (or as it was described in the Rabbids Invasion movie, practically indestructible). Able to endure horrific abuse and remain not only alive but generally healthy and able-bodied. In a majority of rabbid media, they take the brunt of fires, explosions, chemical burns, crushings, crashings, falls, beat downs, skeletal deformation, and plain mutilation, and though coming out misshapen, bruised, furless, or even missing a limb or two, they still manage to not only recover but find humor in it.
It also appears that they're able to regenerate limbs as well, similar to axolotls, though it's doubtful that they can breathe underwater like them as well. However in some cases, rabbids are seen with visible scars, clear unhealed damage that should have healed the minute it was inflicted, but instead has aged. Such outliers, while perhaps a flaw in their DNA, can also be because said damage had afflicted the rabbid psychologically, and thus, the body couldn't heal it properly (as far as observed, a mentally damaged or genetically flawed rabbid cut in half does not, in fact, stay in half, but the scar of where they had been sliced will remain).
Rabbid deaths are yet to be shown, though perhaps the rabbid zombies in the Rayman Raving Rabbids prototype can account for them, but even then, the cause of their deaths or any potential rabbid death remains unknown, their lifespans being just as endless as the rest of Glade creatures, never dying of old age. Though their deaths are not a commonality, the concept of death is not at all foreign to them. They know what death is and are observed to grieve and create funerals for their lost companions. Sure the companions in question are usually objects, but that doesn't mean they are incapable of showing respect for those who are no longer living, and to some extent, makes them spiritual creatures.
Returning to their mortality, slow deaths such as drowning, starvation, or asphyxiation only put them into comas until other rabbids (or humans) find them to resuscitate them, which surprisingly requires very little effort to do. With how quickly they're able to regenerate or at the very least heal open wounds, falling ill from infection doesn't seem very common, though not an impossibility for the fact that some rabbids can catch colds, fevers, or even develop allergies. But even if these ailments get to a point where they become lethal to the host, it's likely that they only fall into a coma as a way to recover over time.
To allow such quick regeneration, the speed and sheer power of the rabbid's nervous system is so intense that they not only can handle extreme volts of electricity but seem to emit such intense electricity on their own. Practically a living battery that when given a slight shock can cause an explosion of hyperactivity. However the intensity of how much electricity they emit seems to vary from rabbid to rabbid, some emitting enough to disrupt radio signals, some managing to learn how to use this trait to their advantage as a way to power machinery or to shoot bolts of lightning like Zeus, but most of the time it's just a quirk that gives them a bit of a rush when electrocuted. A hardy organism, but would their mutilated limbs have the same hardness as the host? Very likely.
Organic Resources:
A resource that does not age or disintegrate can become a valuable one. A cut-off limb has no reason to regenerate, the limbs collected and often hollowed out to create very durable leather, their indestructible yet flexible bones are utilized for structural support of buildings or tools. The fact that rabbids can bruise and form rashes implies the blood flow within their muscles is similar to that of the common mammal, their only defense being an impenetrable hide, without it their flesh is vulnerable to the elements, as well as cuts and tears, allowing them to be prepared and served as a rare delicacy (though the consumption of rabbid matter should be highly discouraged considering the kind of diet rabbids tend to have, not to mention how chewy the meat is, it'll almost be like chewing a massive chunk of meaty gum). Rabbid hide, bones and flesh being an extremely rare and valuable resource that cannot be farmed for the simple fact that almost nothing can break through the hide of a rabbid, adding to their value. If their bodies are near indestructible, did rabbids dispose of such limbs before Earth? They likely ate them.
Digestive System:
Their stomach acid appears to be extraordinarily corrosive, their odd and powerful intestines able to pass down and gain energy from the rusty metals they consume alongside normal food. Due to this, it has created a habit of shoving anything they find into their maws, either swallowing them whole, sucking them, or taking the time to chew them, though their teeth appear to not be built for breaking down anything other than meats and plants, maybe even some fabrics, plastics and cardboard. Their teeth are structured similarly to a rabbit's, with four incisors and twelve molars, only two of those incisors being the most visible out of all of their teeth, so much so it almost appears as if those incisors are their only teeth no matter how wide they open their maws.
Teeth aside, a rabbid's stomach seems capable of digesting almost anything but even then it doesn't mean that certain items don't harm the rabbid. Surprisingly, they seem prone to stomach aches and stomach bugs, their body reacting just as any would, expelling the contents of the stomach either by the mouth or the butt. One object that seems to have the most impact on not only the rabbid's stomach but their entire bodies is carrot juice. By some bizarre process, carrot juice being mixed with the acids of their stomach triggers an intense chemical reaction within their bodies, creating a yet-to-be-identified chemical that when absorbed into the bloodstream and making its journey to the brain, manages to interfere with the powerful neurotransmitters of the rabbid's brain. Following suit would be what is well known as symptoms of drunkenness, carrot juice mirroring the process that alcohol undergoes within the human body, yet surprisingly a rabbid ingesting alcohol does nothing but make them a bit gassy. Despite having such an intoxicating affect, it only formed an affinity toward carrots, in some cases becoming an addiction.
Another oddity to take note of is their ability to not only hold onto items within their stomach (whether it be food or miscellaneous trinkets) without them dissolving from the stomach acids but also to allow items to pass through untouched without any irritation. For example, if they swallow an item, they can discard it immediately from the other end, the item being no different than how it first went in, the same goes if an item is inserted from behind and is miraculously discarded from the mouth. The muscles are focused and coordinated enough to do it effortlessly, so much so it's usually done for the fun of it. If a rabbid were to be spit roasted, they very likely would not find an issue in it, they may even find it funny.
As for their digestive waste, it's surprisingly similar to human waste, their toxic diet is no different to that of average city folk, and though their numbers are far higher than that of humans, their waste has not become of any environmental concern. How so? Rabbids appear to prefer doing their business in human outhouses or bathrooms. What about accidents or cases of rabbids doing their business how every animal would? It would likely be tended to by some unfortunate human who believed a neighbor had dropped a deuce in their yards. With how common it is for a rabbid to dispose of their waste as a human, current methods of disposing of said waste did not need to be altered by a lot to accustom to rabbid waste, the only changes being the size of such facilities. Just like how all purified water once came from the toilets of man, it also comes from the toilets of rabbid. And just like a majority of organisms, they expel bodily waste from two exists, the anus and urethra, the urethra often sharing orifices with reproductive organs, but compared to other mammals or any creature of Earth and the Glade, their reproductive organs are quite the oddity.
Reproduction:
Rabbits have quite the reputation for reproducing in massive numbers, so it's to no surprise that rabbids would share this characteristic as well, however for modern rabbids, the methods of their reproduction have been altered so drastically that it can no longer be considered natural reproduction, but instead artificial cloning. Before they developed the technology to clone one another - that era being before they had been bullied into violent madness - they reproduced like any other mammal would, sexually.
Sexual reproduction is the process of the genetic information of two organisms being combined to create offspring, one half of this genetic information coming from the male's sex cells (sperm) whereas the other half comes from the female's sex cells (egg), the delicate process that follows being the long incubation of offspring by egg or womb. The length of the incubation, number of offspring, age of maturity, ovulation cycles and general lifespan of an organism has a massive impact on how often they can reproduce successfully. A rabbit's reproduction rate being incredibly high not only due to their short lifespans as prey animals, but also due to their short pregnancies, large litters, quick maturity, and ability to rebreed immediately after kindling, making it possible for one rabbit to have one litter per month. Yet somehow, having the highest reproduction rate of all livestock, rabbids manage to beat a rabbit's numbers by a lot.
How so? Well for one they're Glade creatures, they seem to all spawn in intense numbers (look at Globox), rabbids no doubt sharing this trait to a more rediculous degree as prey animals of the Glade enviroment. Howver one trait that truly sets them apart and adds to their fertility is the fact that rabbids are hermaphrodite. Baring a unique reproductive organ that not only produces both sperm and egg but allows rabbids to be impregnated and to impregnate others, the entirety of their genitalia protected internally and almost invisible from the outside, being so well hidden that even rabbids themselves forget its existence, the only time it becomes visible is when they breed. Not only does this reproductive organ double their litters, considering rabbids have a seemingly endless life span and intense durability, the mortality rate of rabbid kits would be extraordinarily low, almosy all surviving to maturity and becoming one of millions that will be pumping out litters for who knows how long. How the environment they thrived in lasted for so long with their uncontrollable population is anyone's guess, perhaps they were not as indestructible back in the day, which would explain why there are no pre-cloning rabbids in sight, though it's scary to imagine what in the Glade of Dreams was capable of keeping their numbers in check, perhaps they ate each other. Population control aside, while it's simple to grasp how these creatures reproduced in the past, how they reproduce now is quite the puzzle.
It is assumed that after a long period of intense stress and torture, the rabbids reproduction rate would plummet to the point they became completely infertile, which may have been one of the many factors that contributed to their retreat deep into the depths of the earth. From their retreat came not only the rapid evolution in their technology but a completely new culture that focused on senseless self-experimentation, likely as an attempt to reshape their biology into one that can no longer succumb to horrific abuse. With that constant experimentation came the rabbids that are known and feared, having undergone an unknown amount of genetic alterations to the point their very genetic makeup became incredibly unstable making them prone to abrupt mutations.
This instability would be especially apparent in their behavior, having become erratic and violent, their actions impulsive and without reason, the only constant they maintained being the goal for vengeance and war. While their behavioral quirks and technological advancements are a curiosity to behold, for this portion, their reproduction will be the main focus. Either as a result of frequent mutations or continued frustrations in maintaining any form of infancy (surrogacy or artificially), the rabbids eventually discovered that the only method that successfully kept their species alive was cloning (as shown in the opening scene of Rabbids Alive n' Kicking) utilizing massive cloning pools to spontaneously create many rabbids from one. And due to their tendency to mutate, even clones don't end up the same in blood, behavior, or even appearance as the original, especially with the fact that items or creatures are sometimes tossed into these pools, merging those traits and the rabbid's to create unique rabbids. However these mergings are normally used in smaller pools, meant to only create one clone, as a way to ensure that if the merge results in an undesirable rabbid, it would at least only result in one of its kind instead if many.
Exact clones are possible, but the method of which requires more precision. Instead of pools, pods are used to ensure all genetic information is replicated to the very cell (basing off of Mad Rabbid's cloning machine... which wasn't really a pod, more of an emptied refrigerator). Exact-clones are rare, not because of the effort required, but because the rabbids see no purpose in making many of the same rabbid (what if one day they hate that rabbid and by proxy they end up hating a majority of the population?). If an exact-clone is to be made, the rabbid being cloned has to be one of great importance to the colony, for example, scientists.
Almost all high-ranking professors are exact clones of Ph.D. Barranco, the original being the easiest to recognize with their bandages and bruises, having decided to create an exact-clone of themselves before fully committing to their harmful self-experimentation, not trusting any other rabbid to take their place as the top stable-minded professor (they were very insistent about it, and no matter how much they limped and cried in pain, their obsession with experiencing the brunt of experiments was unwavering). That exact-clone being referred to as Barranco II, who would be the superior of all additional Barranco clones, these additional clones supervising non-Barranco pool-clones who have proved themselves to be decent enough scientists. Exact-clones, of course, would technically be considered as actual clones since the rabbid's build and memories is duplicated to the fullest - unlike pool-clones - but rabbids are strange, and with their strangeness comes the need to make up new, very confusing, and contradictory terms.
To no surprise, the mutations and experiments solidified rabbids as mules, but despite being incapable of reproducing sexually, they managed to maintain their primitive mating behavior, or in more crude terms, their ridiculous sex drive. As made obvious in early rabbid media, these rodents are incredibly horny and do not hold back when expressing it, and as a direct result of assimilating with human culture, what they find attractive would align with human beauty standards. They're already not the brightest of creatures, attraction only dumbing them down that much further, courting anything that catches their eye. Whether they're courting another rabbid, a human, or an inanimate object, like a doll or a traffic cone, maybe even a bar of soap. What a rabbid considers attractive is near impossible to pin down, sometimes it's as obvious as a very fit man or a very curvy woman, but other times it makes no sense at all, like a tennis racket or a plunger. Despite their tastes, they seem to be loyal partners, while not as loyal as albatross, they're at least as loyal as humans, one can't help but feel jealous with how a rabbid cares for their inanimate lover.
(A minor note, but due to earth-settled-rabbids progressively becoming calmer and friendlier over time, it may be possible that rabbids have regained some of their fertility. That's if the Rabbids Short featuring a rabbid-human hybrid is canon.)
Subspecies
With such a long period of experimentation and rapid mutations, its to no surprise that some mutations are more common than others, so much so that they're identified as new breeds of rabbid, those being mini rabbids (depicted in RRRGBA, Rabbids Invasion and MxRSparks of Hope) heavy rabbids (depicted in R4, RRR2, MxRKingdom Battle and MxRSparks of Hope), warrior rabbids (depicted in RRR), butcher rabbids (depicted in R4, RRR, Rabbids Invasion, MxRKingdom Battle and MxRSparks of Hope), kaiju rabbids (depicted in Captain LazerhawkBDR) and ancient rabbids (depicted in Rabbids Invasion).
Mini rabbids as the name would imply are a lot smaller than the average rabbid, so much so they could almost be mistaken for rabbid kits, which unfortunately makes them vulnerable to being pet, grabbed and coddled when they don't want to by both outsiders and other rabbids, rabbids in particular treating them as kits, also maintaining some maternal instincts despite no rabbid kits having been born for centuries. They're often more aggressive and more hyper than the average rabbid, likely to compensate for their small size.
Heavy rabbids are a lot larger than the average rabbid, not to mention a lot rounder. Some utilize their size for tasks that require a lot of muscle, while others utilize their size to do what they want to a stubborn degree, knowing well they're a near unstoppable force and immovable object - at least compared to their mini and average counterparts.
A warrior rabbid is almost three times the size of the average rabbid, their fur prickly and dark, their temperament on par with that of a mini rabbid. Their only duty was to guard rabbid hideouts from outsiders, often seen heavily armored and weilding heavy weaponry. They also share a behavioral quirk, that being sleep-guarding (sleep walking but only in their respective stations) which made them extremely efficient guards. They kept order within rabbid societies, doing as Barranco clones command of them and punishing unruly workers.
Butcher rabbids (also known as gorilla rabbids) are the largest of all workers (worker rabbids accounting for all rabbids excluding kaiju and ancient rabbids), as well as the most intimidating with their muscular build and terrifying roars. Despite being quite the weapon, they're mostly tasked with breaking apart materials and food, hence being butchers. With such a terrifying demeanor, they manage to be the friendliest of workers, but that doesn't mean they aren't horrifying beasts when needed.
Kaiju rabbids are the biggest of all rabbids, their emperor (Emperor Jabbit, the rabbid who ruled all of rabbid kind before they had been driven to madness) having been the first to have mutated in such manner, and despite having the ability to destroy entire cities, they're used to dispose of indestructible rabbid scrap (sometimes disposing of rabbids as well), their fecal matter used to power their hideouts. Despite having such a seemingly torturous purpose, the colossal rabbids are content with it, their endless hunger quenched with how much waste rabbids produce.
Now for ancient rabbids, this variety in particular is a bit more difficult to describe when as far as depicted canonically, there is only one survivor, Lapinibernatus. As he claims, he is an ancient ancestor of the rabbid who was living in a global utopia before life on Earth. Thought that explanation completely contradicts the initial invasion of the rabbids, it can easily be explained when recalling the rabbid's most powerful invention, the time traveling washing machine. It is likely Lapini (short for Lapinibernatus) had used one of these machines to travel far back in time to colonize Earth before it was inhabitable for life, creating the utopia he lived in for an unknown amount of time before it all came crumbling down during the Late Heavy Bombardment, no trace left of it as the eras of life on Earth progressed. For potentially billions of years Lapini would be in a coma, his body eventually incased in a block of ice which would be discovered by humans. Earth-settled-rabbids who had infultrated human facilities being responsible for freeing and reviving him. A plausible set of events to how Lapini came to be, but what about his drawings depicting rabbids as having evolved from him?
Perhaps there had been other survivors of his kind who didn't fall into a coma, instead facing the new environmental extremes head-on, forced to use primitive methods to survive. In the wild, high intelligence isn't a trait that survives for long, while it's capable of evolving a species for the better, it's not a guarantee. The energy required to maintain such intelligence across bloodlines is immense, keeping such a trait costing them the opportunity to form more beneficial traits such as strength, stamina, body mass, stronger immune systems, keeping the body warm/cool, and so on. When it comes to an environment of intense competition, higher thought is bred out in favor of more primitive strengths, which could give reason to why rabbids evolved the way they did, growing in body mass and adaptability at the cost of intelligence, a needed sacrifice for the survival of rabbid kind, at least for the variant of rabbids that Lapini was a part of. Why would a rabbid's evolution go from dimwit, to genius, and back to dimwit? Perhaps they were already the perfect organism as dimwits, ideal for adapting to any environment, planet, or dimension, which is made abundantly clear when contrasting the modern rabbid's behavior with Lapini's behavior. A Quiet, anti-social reclusive rabbid is not as adaptable as a loud, social, and invasive rabbid. While these variants are so physically and behaviorally different, there are some traits they all share that are near impossible to breed/genetically edit out of them, such as their odd body structure, bald spots, ears, weakness to carrots, outbursts, love of dance and music.

The change is a complicated process. While it’s a similar experience that every vampire shares and can bond over, the process can differ wildly from person to person. This seemed based on the state a person was in at the time of the turning. Steve and Eddie had been, for the most part, whole and healthy when they were bitten the first time, despite the further bat attacks that happened afterwards. There had been very little in need of repair, just a little restructuring at the cellular level was needed.
You though? Not so much.
Your body had been broken when Eddie fed you his blood around the ventilator. Your body was still broken when they snuck you out of the morgue, your form trembling in unimaginable pain as Eddie carried you through the empty halls. He clutched you close to his chest as they hurried out to Steve’s car, cradling you in his arms with his leather jacket wrapped tightly around you like a blanket.
The boys never left your side as the damage from the wreck healed, giving you regular drinks of their own blood to help ease your pain. The simpler structures healed quickly, like your skeletal system, the breaks and sprains knitting back together easily enough. Things that were more complicated took longer, such as complex webs of muscles and tendons that held everything together, as well as other soft tissues such as your skin. Your nervous system was the last thing to repair itself. Within a few days, you were whole again.
Physically, at least. Your brain, however, was a completely different story.
The brain was a very delicate thing. A very, very delicate thing. So delicate, in fact, a hard bump on the head just right can completely change someone’s personality. But you’d gotten more than just a hard bump on the head. The wreck had left you with severe, life altering damage.
Your cognitive capabilities were nearly shot, you could say very little outside of their names, simple sentences, and simple questions. Asking where the hell you were when you woke up was about as complicated as you could manage. So much of your memory was gone that Steve and Eddie were thankful you even knew who they were. You couldn’t get around the trailer or do anything without help. You never really tried too either. If they didn’t try to interact with you, you just stayed sitting wherever they put you, staring off into space.
Weeks went by with little change. Eddie grew more depressed and anxious as the time went on and Steve couldn’t blame him. You hadn’t shown any changes mentally since your body had healed. You were a blank slate almost, like you were awake yet still unconscious at the same time. It was no way to live, Steve knew that. But he pushed that out of his mind. He wasn’t going to think about that, couldn’t bring himself to even get near thinking about that.
Even though they kept feeding you their blood and it seemed to do just fine at holding off your hunger, neither of them fed from you. They didn’t discuss it; it was just an unspoken agreement. Things had really changed between you all now and they didn’t want to assume they still had your consent. Asking you for it now would do no good since you weren’t fully informed of what was going on. You barely seemed to know where you were most nights much less understand what you are now.
That wasn’t to say it wasn’t hard to restrain themselves. Far from it. For some reason, you smelled even more delicious now than you did as a human. It confused Steve since no other human smelled like you. He had noticed that fact immediately once he returned to the normal aspects of his life, like working a job. Bills still needed to be paid even when you were a vampire.
But, on the other hand, you didn’t smell like other vampires either. To be fair, Eddie was the only other vampire he had to compare you to, and Eddie didn’t have much of a scent to him anymore since he turned. Plus, Steve could tell he wasn’t the only one experiencing it. While he never brought it up, he could tell just by way Eddie acted fidgety around you that he was feeling it too.
They tried to keep things as normal for you as they could while they gave you more time to heal. They’d help you move to the living room and put the tv on so you would have something to watch. They tried to always keep it on programs they knew you liked or thought you might like. They took turns taking you for short walks outside around the trailer like you sometimes did before. At sunrise, they’d curl up on either side of you on the small bed, the three of you pressed tightly together since neither of them was willing to sleep apart from you, even just in the next room. They both had trouble sleeping these days, but you always knocked right out, always turning to cuddle up into one or the other.
One day while Steve was trying to sleep, it dawned on him that it seemed like you were giving each of them a turn to curl up with you. He started paying more attention, and discovered he was right. Every night, you started out the night by falling asleep turned in the opposite direction from the night before. Last night, for instance, you had curled up into Eddie. Tonight, you were curled up into Steve. This gave him a flutter of hope. Somewhere in your brain, you still knew they both needed you and you wanted to be there for both of them. Maybe it also meant you needed them both too.
That’s how Steve was choosing to take it, at least, but Eddie was so depressed he was highly doubtful. There wasn’t much hope left in the metal head, so Steve chose to have enough hope for all three of you.
A few days later, Steve felt validated in his hope when you suddenly sat upright in bed, ripping yourself from his arms in the process and scaring the hell out of both men. They were up in an instant, trying to figure out what was wrong. You’d never done anything like this before.
You were quiet, but most importantly calm, your eyes slowly sweeping the room. Your brow was slightly furrowed, as if you were trying to remember something. There was a small spark of life in your eyes that had been absent ever since you woke up in the morgue.
Steve suddenly recognized your expression. He grabbed Eddie, pulling him back from you slightly so he would let go of your arms and stop trying to talk to you. Eddie looked like he wanted to punch Steve until he pointed out what he was seeing.
You looked like you always did when you’d taken an extra-long nap after they’d fed. It usually only happened when they got too carried away and accidentally drank too much from you, resulting in naps in the ten-to-twelve-hour range. You’d have this period of time upon waking where you were still far from conscious, the fatigue from blood loss completely slowing your mind down to levels where you acted almost drugged out. When you woke up in that state, you would always sit up and look around the room for a while like this, as if to remind yourself of where you were. Then you would curl back up in the arms of whoever had fed from you and they’d hold you until your head cleared.
It wasn’t long before the spark faded from your eyes and was gone, replaced by the blank look that had become your normal expression. You quietly laid back down, turning towards Steve again like you had earlier. He immediately laid down with you, taking you into your arms. It didn’t take long before you were asleep again.
Over the next few weeks, this became a frequent occurrence, getting to where it was happening a few times a week. It wasn’t just at night, either. Sometimes you would just look around the room from your spot on the couch, and sometimes you would stand up to do it. You really made progress one night when you wandered from room to room, looking at and touching random things as you went. Your face was that confused expression, which spark back in your eyes. Steve and Eddie could barely contain their excitement. It was the first time you had walked unguided since you came back. After a while, you meandered back to the couch and didn’t move again.
While they hoped it was a major sign of progress, instead you seemed to regress after that.
The moments of attempted recognition ended. You virtually stopped talking or doing anything, even when prompted. They had to pick you up whenever they needed you to move you somewhere. It was as if you were an actual living doll now.
Close to the eight-month mark after your turning, with a long time since the last sign of life from you, they had the conversation Steve had been dreading. Surprisingly, it was Eddie who initiated it.
“Steve are we being selfish assholes?” he asked.
It forced them both to think about it. Clearly turning you hadn’t brought you back. Physically, yes, but everything that made you who you were as a person was long gone. Eddie said you reminded him of a zombie, only without the eating brains. The only reason Steve could figure was, you had actually died before they attempted to turn you. Brain death was as real as body death, and you can’t bring something back from the dead. They both knew what they had to do.
But how do you kill the person you love, even out of mercy?
That’s exactly what they hadn’t figured out a few days later when a series of major storm fronts swept through Hawkins. It was a nightmare for Steve and Eddie. The high winds, thunder and lightning reminded them a little too much of that night in the Upside Down. It left them both riddled with anxiety, unable to sleep properly for days. Once it was all over and they finally could sleep, they slept hard.
Even though they had gone to sleep shortly before dawn, it was a couple hours after nightfall when they awoke. Normally they got anywhere from five to eight hours each. Now Steve understood part of the reason why you were always so disoriented from your really long naps.
After Steve groggily sat up and saw the time, he felt a pang of guilt. He knew you had been awake for some time now. You usually woke up before either of them. Since you would just lay there until one of them moved you, neither of them liked to just leave you waiting on them like that.
Just as he was about to turn to you to wish you good morning like he always did, Eddie cried out with surprise.
“Where’s Y/N?!?”
Steve whipped around. Sure enough, you weren’t laying between them anymore. A frantic glance around the room told him you weren’t anywhere in there either.
Steve and Eddie frantically scrambled out of bed and made for the main part of the trailer. As they reached the living room, they both skidded to a stop. They didn’t move, would’ve stopped breathing if they still did such a thing, and gawked at the dream they saw before them.
You were standing in front of the open refrigerator, peering inside of it with one hand resting on the open door, the other on your hip. It looked like you had just gotten out of the shower, your clothes exchanged for a long towel that was wrapped around your body. Your hair had been towel dried, but was still wet, dripping water down your torso and arms.
Steve heard a loud whimper next to him from Eddie, but he couldn’t bring himself to tear his gaze away from you to look at his friend. You might disappear if he did.
Instead of disappearing though, the sound drew your attention, and you looked over. A smile came to your face when you saw them. Steve looked into your eyes and his heart soared at what he saw.
You. You were in there again.
“Morning, sleepyheads,” you said, then turned back to the refrigerator. “I’m starving but absolutely nothing sounds good and everything we have is expired. Didn’t we just go shopping last week?”
(To be concluded in Part 3…)

Alright, so when Steve is with his parents and finally allowed to shift, is he actually horrifying? Because Steve, while Steve is definitely experiencing some body horror while looking in the mirror, what does it look like from your author perspective?
Because in my mind it could go one of three ways:
1) It's genuinely a bit horrifying and gruesome. Steve looks like someone who's been partially flayed, parts of skin skin look like they've been rubbed raw, and there are chunks of him that's just raw muscle or bone. He is literally exposed and vulnerable.
Or maybe his body has extras bits? Maybe his finger got so long he needed to add an extra joint in his fingers? His skin leeches all the pigment out, and you can see every blue vein in exquisite detail. At random point during the day, he'll grow extra teeth and have to grow his jaw longer and longer to accommodate them all until its no longer a human jaw.
2) He's incredibly beautiful to look at, and it's terrifying. Maybe his brain is pulling from his mental database of features and selecting the "best ones" in order to make his body "better." So while he's recognizable as Steve, everything about him is so polished and perfected it's not Steve at all.
3) He's not ugly or beautiful; he's massively unsettling instead. His face has become a kaleidoscope shifting from one shape to another and another and another in an endless cycle as a sort of mental exercise to make sure his Steve face is the one he wants to keep.
Or he looks like a department store mannequin with no recognizable features at all. No pores, no freckles, no moles, his eyes are the lightest shade of grey possible, he has no eyelashes to speak of, and his mouth is basically a slash where lips should be. He looks like a lot of scar tissue surrounded by flawless skin.
Just, what do shifters look like when they aren't actively keeping a hold on their appearance?
Hi! Okay, Steve's a little different than the rest because he's still recovering from almost dying. but for the most part they do look pretty skeletal! At least the Harrington branch of the family- (Shapeshifters "Shapeless" form depend on genes!)
They are kind of horrifying to look at, mostly because to the untrained eye- the sort of look like corpses. But they are also just generally not human like. Very pale, can see most of their veins- Steve has a shit ton of freckles and moles the pigment in his skin condenses- He's short, but his arms are long, and his fingers are spidery?? long thin and boney.
Some shapeshifter families try and "breed out the anomalies" they are perfect. Uncanny Valley perfect, no blemishes, no freckles, perfect heights, perfect teeth- too human. Some are more monster-ish, some are tall, in human tall, some just don't have regular features for the most part, a nose that's basically not there, skin pressed down to their skull no cartilage to make defining features. They wanted to become the monsters under the bed when they weren't playing "house humans"
Because Steve is hurt, he looks worse, he views himself looking worse. Eddie's going to see it as face value- Steve's unsettling to look at yes, because he's not human. And it's very noticeable now.
It is traditional for shapeshifters to cover "imperfections" while holding a new shape, so all of Steve's freckles go away, and he keeps a few moles because a family member hundreds of years ago hated the way the freckles looked- so they can't carry them in the gene pool; but they liked the moles. Any scars are hidden because they are "abnormal" and they draw attention. The bigger and more traumatizing ones can be down played and hidden under less vivid scarring. The ones other people saw them get. But they don't heal while shifted. so they visibly scar the real skin ten times worse because they fester. So many have pieces of exposed bones, muscles, or large gaping holes in their skin. Where their real bodies can't function outside of holding a different shape and put energy into healing.
His teeth don't fit in his jaw perfectly either, he's basically got 6 canines, three on the bottom and three on the top.
Shapeshifters bodies don't usually shift without conscious thought. But they can be scared- or startling- so they "Jump out of their skin" which is normally a terrifying amount of body shifting and bones moving- in a very short period of time.
When shapeshifters change bone shape- it's very loud, they are breaking and reshaping their skeletal system. it's not "poof" change height. They get pretty bad stretch marks sometimes too! It's not all magic. Sheading a fake skin is easier than getting a new one. A fake skin comes off like water (besides bone shape, that one is still creepy and hurts like a bitch) but the action of basically becoming something else, takes a huge toll on the body!
At this point I'm not even sure I answered your question properly.

I remember you saying that the angels had a Jellyfish style brain but that got me thinking,
Can they regenerate limbs after they've been lost? For example an angel looses their arm would it regenerate in a few months/years? Or with their holy light could they just make a replacement? Like a limb made out of the same stuff their wings and halos are.
On a different angel connected anatomy note, I've always imagined their wings being significantly more fragile then the rest of their body's. Like at one point i think you said that their wings and halos are the first part they loose after their fall.
Henceforth, maybe the wings and halo's are pure light
i think the physical form of the angels in ultrakill is sort of intriguing, given that the game shows us that blood is the great equalizer (we all bleed, even gods) and there is a distinct physicality imo to the universe presented here as a whole. this world, while being non-euclidean in nature, is also sharply concrete, and the angels to me operate on a similar principle to that of hell - they have a physical form that can be felt, can interact, and can be damaged, but are not set whatsoever. they have a base form that was given by god and the higher up the angel, the closer that form comes to the typical "humanoid" mold (or, as angels conceive it, god's image), yet they have a wonderful capacity to twist and change it as needs must. this is only hindered by them having a limited amount of ethereal "clay" that they can work with (divine fire made into flesh, with sparks running through their muscles and licks lighting over their organs), so losing a limb is still losing a limb. they can't regenerate it on their own, but an angel gifted in healing can easily re-attach the limb - raphael is the best doctor of heaven, and within god's power there is really no wound or affliction he can't repair save death itself. i just like the idea that nothing in this world can escape the bounds of the material despite angels believing themselves to be above such things and that a body, whether made of cells or fire or metal, has limits and is not merely something that contains a soul but is wholly part of the living organism it makes up. they are all their bodies, and even angels must take care of their physical selves as best they can.
and yes!! the halo and wings whither away from fallen angels with the wings first losing their ability to fly and becoming exceptionally painful, then the halo gradually deteriorating as their fallen traits begin to appear. to NO ONE'S surprise, this is influenced by paradise lost - at the beginning of the poem, lucifer is still crowned with his "glory", or his halo, and he appears scarred but virtually the same after falling to hell. however, by the time he infiltrates the garden of eden, his halo has faded and his appearance has changed so much, the angels who first capture him no longer recognize him (satan ridicules them for this, but it is in fact gabriel who points out it's not their fault, as satan is nearly unrecognizable as lucifer by now) BUT otherwise i did want "fallen" to be literal, and i think of an angel's wings as supremely important to them, with flight being their actual primary mode of movement. i also did think of them as being made purely from their divine light too and so could no longer stay in an angel who's light has been taken - what remains of gabriel's in the au for a time is a sort of afterimage, turned black and white as they are no longer "alive" and so no longer operate physically or emotionally (ie, they no longer reflect his emotions) gabriel can still utilize his wings for a time, but only in very short bursts and with great agony, but they eventually must retire as they fade away to skeletal remains.

ANATOMICAE
This post is supposed to be a (hopefully) thorough breakdown of the physiology and anatomy of segments and a primer for their general functions. Not required reading, but I thought it would be interesting to record my headcanons and theoretical biology ramblings somewhere for easy reference. And besides, reading through is likely easier than taking one of them apart yourself. The contents here will potentially be updated or edited as new ideas come to mind.
I. INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM
The integument, in this case, refers to the skin, hair, and nails, and the structures associated with them. Segments do (perhaps surprisingly) have “real” genuine human skin, hair, etc. It is derived from a human source, but not anyone unwilling. The organic components of all segments are directly cultivated from the original Dottore’s various “donations” and therefore at a base level all share the same default genetic profile. This results in them, for the most part, having the same phenotype (skin/hair color, eye color, etc.), barring any mutations or epigenetic changes while growing (or any bodily modifications made later).
For context, when speaking about parts being grown vs built, some of their organic parts are cultured separately in tanks (think of an oversized specimen jar) as a unit, whereas others are grown on top of their skeletal frame (which we will be addressing shortly) in their own independent holding tank.
Much like humans, the nature of their skin results in the same sorts of properties and identifying features: scars, birthmarks, freckles, moles, etc. Scarring is rarer due to the usage of panacea for more detrimental injuries when available, but more minor (and perhaps major) wounds can leave behind scars if allowed to heal normally. Without any additional help, they heal at about the same rate as an ordinary human being.
II. SKELETAL SYSTEM
The skeleton of segments is made of metal, or more specifically titanium. Because of this, it is extremely sturdy, and resistant to corrosion and chemical interference. Basically as strong as some steels but less dense and therefore less heavy. It’s very hard to break their bones, so adjustments for intentional access exist (for example, a locking hinge system on the ribcage so it can be opened). Going for the joints is the most easily accessible option for dismemberment or dismantling.
Speaking of the joints, they are shaped and perform about how you would expect human ones to do so. However, an important caveat is the existence of powered systems to exert more force, independent of muscle involvement. Smaller joints have “electric” (loosely) actuators, converting energy from stored panacea into movement. Larger joints associated with carrying more weight have hydraulic actuators. The hydraulic fluid used to power those motors (and other fluidic systems) will be covered in the circulatory section.
III. MUSCULAR SYSTEM
Normal muscles here, folks. Sorry to disappoint. Nothing particularly special, because like the skin, they’re grown from existing cells. The key point is that they handle all lesser or more delicate motions in the usual manner (muscles moving skeleton), but if more intense force is required, they can switch to relying on the actuators in the skeleton, which results in it moving on its own and pulling around the muscles instead. Most of a segment’s strength is reliant on the skeleton rather than their muscle mass.
IV. CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM & CIRCULATORY SYSTEMS
The heart is one of the organs that has a mechanical replacement, and is arguably the most important one. Quite a few things need to be pushed around the body, so an organ that could both handle the strain and exert the requisite power was required. It is located where one would typically expect a heart to be, and acts in association with the lungs.
Segments have a synthetic blood replacement, which works similarly to human blood in the sense that it carries out essential processes (moving nutrients and oxygen, removal of metabolic waste products) throughout biological portions of the body. Visually, it looks quite similar to normal human blood, being red in color, but an observant individual might notice it looks particularly dark, even before it dries. The shade is a very deep red, almost approaching black, and upon drying it turns fully black, rather than rusty red or brown. It coagulates somewhat faster than human blood, but not anything too dramatic. Since they don’t have bone marrow, they don’t produce blood cells naturally. Instead, they have an accessory organ that manufactures the blood and replenishes their system when they are running low. This blood organ (if we wanted to call it that) is somewhere in the abdominal cavity.
Outside arteries, veins, and capillaries, they also have very fine tubing for carrying other materials around the body, like hydraulic fluid or panacea. These can easily be differentiated by the differing colors of the contents and the fact that they are more heavily concentrated around mechanical features of their anatomy.
Since having hydraulics means there has to be a reservoir and pump for that as well. The main pump is attached to the heart. It is part of a closed system, only handling hydraulic fluid rather than interacting with the usual heart functions. It pumps fluid independently of the heart beating. The hydraulic fluid reservoir, meanwhile, is located near the liver.
V. RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
Two lungs, one on each side of the heart. For completely sensible reasons, the segments do actually have to breathe. That is mainly a side effect of their partly organic nature, but also does a lot of work to make them appear a bit more convincingly “human”. The lungs are enclosed by the pulmonary pleurae.
VI. NERVOUS SYSTEM
They have a human brain stored inside the skull (where it is supposed to be). Don’t ask how he pulled it off, but Dottore somehow managed to copy his brain, in detail, without destroying it entirely. Since all the structures are identical, the segments share the memories of the original, up until the moment their brains were “finished”. Because of that, their individual paths (and the connections their neurons made) began to diverge from the template when they became conscious and started existing independently.
Most nervous structures are matched or equivalent to the human body simply because of their inclination to grow in that way, but there are also sections where they blend into wiring and vice versa to make sure that signals are shared appropriately. The spinal cord is enclosed inside the spinal column, and still serves as a connection between the central and peripheral nervous systems.
Internally, some areas and systems are less innervated than others, in order to minimize pain and discomfort during typical (or extracurricular) investigative procedures and maintenance. Their skin and underlying layers of muscle and fascia are perfectly capable of feeling pain as deeply as any other person. The exterior of organs, however, tends to feel sensation more neutrally, rather than indicating visceral pain.
VII. OTHER ORGANS
Included in the “basic organ systems” package is a digestive tract, albeit slightly more efficient than normal. They don’t need to eat as much/often as an average human in the same height/weight range. Nutrients derived from food contribute to keeping all the organic parts going, but considering how much is mechanical, they could likely remain functional for a decent amount of time before expiring from starvation. Abdominal organs are enclosed in the peritoneum (a membrane that forms the lining of the abdominal cavity) as would be typical in a human. Filtering/processing organs like the liver and kidneys are mechanical.
While they have secondary sex characteristics (that affect appearance and external traits), they don’t have internal reproductive organs. How they present, and what that even means is dependent on the segment.
VIII. MISCELLANEOUS
Teeth/gums/tongue/other mouth stuff are natural(ish). The core of the teeth and the part that’s attached to the skull is all metal, but they have enamel on top to correct the appearance. This means they have a powerful bite strength. Use this information responsibly.
Additional body modification is typical among segments, and not frowned upon so long as they don’t physically alter the brain or certain other components. They have a tracking chip located somewhere, and that may or may not also function as a self-destruct switch. They specifically aren’t allowed to mess with that. Some segments are more interested in becoming more mechanical than others, or trying out other additions. Epsilon himself is extremely close to the “base” default build.
Mechanical organs usually have a small glowing piece somewhere on them to indicate how much energy they have in reserve. Think of it as a bit like a rectangular HP bar. Full is optimal. The shorter the glowing section gets, the closer they are to needing a recharge (or more specifically, a panacea refill).
They do have immune systems (but don’t ask how that works). They’re very carefully calibrated to be strong without being too eager in attacking parts of themselves. So they can get sick, but unless it's something very virulent, they'll likely clear it. There is also the possibility that their bodies might occasionally sequester particularly resilient invading organisms and end up carrying them latently.
Segments don't age, exactly. They shed and replace cells, but their telomeres are modified in such a way that they appear to exist indefinitely as the same age they were "born" as.
As a side effect of having a human brain, they also have to sleep. They should probably get as much as any other person, but that is extremely unlikely.

HC : SAIYAN ANATOMY
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it makes sense for saiyans to be so human-looking. as a bipedal primate mammalian species, alot of human traits was of course, inevitable. yet they still have distinct enough features compared to humans that they are noticeably different- to not mention the obvious taxonomy that would influence these changes. it's very possible that both humans and saiyans had a common biological ancestor, but split due to numerous factors on their individual planets that lead to saiyans being classified as monkeys and so powerful in the scale of the universe, while humans classified as great apes and so weak in comparison to the scale of the universe. of course just simple taxonomy isn't the only thing that's all different about them.
speaking on their environmental factors, saiyans had to evolve to compensate for the harshness of both planets sadala and vegeta- they had to adapt to the gravity that was considered ten times more dense then galaxy standard gravity. their bodies grew massively in strength- with their muscle tissue and the bones in their skeletal structure growing stronger and denser, which not only made them stronger, but also far more durable then most other races in the universe. they even developed a small regenerative healing factor, as the constantly combative and aggressive nature of the saiyan species required for their bodies to be capable of taking more damage, and to in turn, adapt their bodies to that damages- which lead to the biological enigma that is the zenkai boost.
speaking more on saiyan's durable physiology, saiyans also grew to develop a wider, stockier ribcage- those bones being especially strengthened and dense compared to the rest of the skeletal structure- which leads to a saiyan's unusually wide and heavily built bodies. what these ribs are for is not just increased protection of the torso, but to also protect a saiyan's two hearts. both hearts are in the same area in the upper left of the torso. with the greater heart doing most of the work in pumping oxygen and blood through the body, while the lesser heart is much smaller and connected near the bottom end of the greater heart where it, for the most part, applies the same function to a lesser extent and leeches nutrients and recycles a small amount of waste product that the greater heart produces- which in turn assists in a saiyan's much greater amounts of stamina than other species. another function is serves, is a temporary back-up heart. should a saiyan's heart be punctured, stop working, etc- the second heart will fire up in rapid production, continuing the pumping of blood and oxygen in the brain and body without even a moment of lag in between, though of course to a lesser extent. should a saiyan be given time to recover from this grievance injury, there is potential for the greater heart to repair itself to a degree, though in most cases, the saiyan will die due to blood loss or cardiac failure from the lesser heart not capable of keeping up with the body's functions.
saiyans also sport one of their most distinct monkey-esque qualities- their tails. the tail is essential to the saiyan body plan. it applies extra balance to their heavy frames, acts as an extra limb for either leisure or combat, and provides the gateway into the oozaru transformation as well as true mastery over the super saiyan. the tail is almost fully autonomous, as it is connected to the body through the somatic nervous system, which impacts reflexes. the tail is the limb that has the most nerves in the saiyan body, which leads to it being so sensitive and when untrained, will drastically shut down many other nerve endings within the body once grabbed. yet once the tail is trained, the sensitive nerves become gradually more hardy and durable- no longer leading to paralysis upon being grabbed. the tail will also reflexively maneuver and dodge out of the way of attacks aimed specifically for it, making it quite difficult to cut off and cripple the saiyan.
saiyans also have many other distinct monkey-like attributes. such as massive upper and lower canine teeth, usually around 3 inches in length on the average saiyan, with loose cheek pouches in their mouths to sheath into upon closing. their jaws produce a bite force of around 5500 PSI, much stronger than most species and can easily tear through flesh and bone. their stomachs are strongly acidic with an effective digestive system that allows for the consumption of skin, hair, hooves, horns and bones. this all combined shows that saiyans are adapted for a heavily protein-based diet, yet saiyans are strictly omnivorous and will happily consume fruit and vegetative foods as well. these adaptations impact them greatly when they need to survive on worlds outside of their own- preying upon the local flora, fauna.... and civilized population.
like many other monkey species as well, saiyans have prehensile feet. able to grip, throw and punch with them just as well as they are with their hands. though in most cases, they primarily went unused- as most saiyans wore shoes to protect against the rocky, heated ground and sand from their desert planet.
finally, saiyans gained a very specific evolutionary trait that was gained from their primarily combative life style and hostile environment- slowed aging. saiyan children remain rather small and compact through early childhood well into adolescents- at this time is where the saiyan will eat the most they can and have their body build up as much strength as possible. then on the precipice of young adulthood, the saiyan will drastically grow in both height and strength- on average to about six feet in length. from there they will remain that height and physical appearance for a majority of their lifespan for the next six or seven decades. this is so that the saiyan remains in peak fighting condition for a long period of their lives. though around the ages of 50, a saiyan will begin to have a slow and steady change in their physical appearance in that their hair will slowly change from black to brown in color. this phenomenon is called "browning", and is a signal that the body has begun preparation and adjustment for the final cycle of saiyan life- rapid aging. after a life time of consuming and burning massive amounts of bodily energy, injuries, and scars- at around the ages of 70-80, the saiyan's body drastically lowers its production rate. the second heart stops its functions completely, the fat and nutrients in both bones and muscles have begun to be repurposed for slow energy maintenance in the body, and the brownish-black hair on top of the saiyans hair begins to rapidly grey and turn white over the next few months and years. the saiyan will be unable to even turn super saiyan, as it will apply too much strain on the body- and their power will rapidly decrease downwards until it stabilizes averaging monumentally lower than it was in their prime. it is rare for a saiyan to ever reach this stage in life, as saiyans tend to often die in battl, and those saiyans that do manage to reach this stage are celebrated and revered as legendary warriors of their species, or social pariahs that are shunned for their cowardice for their last few decades.

Just watched Roanoke Gaming (on youtube) video’s on the Spartan’s of Halo and how, realistically, their augmentation could be done/what would need to be done for the ‘super serum’ to work. And just…the angst and hurt/comfort of that would be so good if, say…Desmond were to go through that and then be magically poof'ed to AC??
Each of the ancestor’s would surely see different uses and advantages of such strength and enhancement’s…but also the pain of them? Both physical and mental? Desmond would need a lot of loving and comfort.
Some notes taken from the video’s and lore, so everyone is on the same page without necessarily needing to watch the videos-(though you should, they are very good.)
Skeletal Augmentations:
At 14, the Spartans were already over 6 foot tall due to overhauling the pituitary gland to induce puberty immediately to ‘flash grow’ them, making them grow taller than normal at an accelerated rate, which had the side effect of weakening the bones as they grew too rapidly for proficient calcium to be placed applied to the growing bones.
This lead to a surgery to 'correct’ the fragility. Basically the bone is 'shaved’ before a carbide ceramic coating was manually fused to the bones, giving them support. This was described as feeling like the bones were made of glass and then shattering inside the body. No more than 3% of the bone could be replaced or the surgery would fail.
Surviving the initial surgery did not mean it was successful. While healing the body was under extreme stress, and could lead to shock, cardiac or respiratory arrest, leading to death. With the bone 'shaved’ it would encourage your body to begin rebuilding the bone, making the bone grow around the new ceramic coating.
The bones, after healing, are nearly unbreakable, withstanding hundreds of thousands of pounds of pressure before breaking.
If the surgery fails because more than 3% of the bone was lost and you don’t die, you will become paralyzed or debilitated because your white blood cells will necroes, leading to septic shock that will eventually lead to the rest of the body being infected with the sepsis.
This surgery makes Spartan’s very heavy and leaves a lot of scarring, as the surgery is highly invasive.
Muscle Augmentation:
More and denser muscle fibers, leading to faster stamina recovery as well as more overall strength, from some sort of injection.
A side effect of this injection could lead to an enlarged heart in 5% of subjects.
The injection feels as though the veins have been injected with napalm and are being torn out of the skin.
The muscle augmentation without the bone augmentation would allow the subject to contract their muscle with so much force they’d shatter their own bones.
Neurological Augmentation:
Quicker and more efficient communication between neurons, leading to faster reaction times.
Subjects can nearly see things in 'slow motion’.
Reaction time is 20 milliseconds, movements seeming nothing but a blur to other unenhanced individuals.
Running 38 mph is an easy feat.
Migraines can be a recurring issue.
TL:DR
Desmond is basically super human, but he got that way with a lot of invasive surgery and trauma against his will.
=============================
teccup additions:
Roanoke Gaming has an entire playlist of Halo Lore and other videos if you’re curious.
For those not that familiar with Halo lore (which is understandable as Halo is a series that likes to put a lot of lore in the novels), the most famous of the Spartans, Master Chief, is a Spartan II. The games mostly focus on either Spartans from Spartan II (like Master Chief) or Spartan III (most members of Noble Team from Halo Reach are from SPARTAN III so if anyone wants to create a Halo x AC crossover that has Desmond be part of the Halo Universe first, you can put him as part of Spartan II or III training.
Either way, there are many ways to kick him to the AC verse but, on the top of my head, if you wish for Desmond to be part of the Halo verse before getting kicked into the AC verse:
The Isus could have been part of the Forerunners (an ancient species of extremely technologically advanced beings that had ruled over the milky way) and the Solar Flare hadn’t just hit the earth, it had hit EVERY part of the milky way by being the start of a chain reaction of every sun in the solar systems in the milky way.
Of course, we can keep the whole AC timeline intact with one caveat: the next Solar Flare would not happen in December 2012, it would happen in August of 2552 (if you want it to be a reference: August 12 would be Altaïr’s death day). This is an important month in Halo lore because this is the month when the Battle of Reach ended (which was one of the bloodiest campaigns during the Human-Covenant Wars (Covenants are the baddies who worship the Forerunners as gods so they’re kinda like alien-inclusive version of Juno’s Instruments of the First Bitch))
By setting it on the Battle of Reach, we will have the choice of letting Desmond be part of Master Chief’s storyline or of Noble Team’s storyline.
If we consider that the Calculations knew that Desmond would be in Reach during the time of the next Solar Flare, the device would be in Reach as well and the main point is to ensure Desmond gets to the Grand Temple there.
We can wave it off as there being Grand Temples all around the Milky Way, all connected to one another and Desmond has to activate one of them to activate all of them. Once all have been activated, the field will surround all planets with the Grand Temple (fertile planets filled with life) and will be spared from the chain reaction of Solar Flares.
Of course, this is not taking into consideration the possibility that the species in Halo lore haven’t noticed the incoming Solar Flare. To combat this and make Desmond have no choice, perhaps it’s something that only builds up towards the last few months (around maybe Feb or March?), not enough time to fully study it and combat it with confidence.
Anyway, the main point is that Desmond would come into contact with the Grand Temple in Reach and activate it.
From there, he will save the planets with a Grand Temple (but this does mean not all of the planets will be saved and any ships in space will not be saved as well) and he’ll be transported to whichever timeline you’d like him to be in AC.
Now, if you want a purely AC fic with the Spartan Augmentation added into the lore, we can go down this route:
The Great Purge happened when Desmond was 13 and the Farm will be hit
(Bonus drama: make Desmond have a fight with Bill who is trying to get them out and it ends with him running away but getting captured by Abstergo, hearing his mother screaming his name before the sounds of gunfire silenced her, replaced by screams all over the Farm)
Spartan II ‘subjects’ were 5 to 6 years old when they started their augmentation but Desmond was included in Abstergo’s own version of Spartan ‘training’ (either keep the name and make it something sort of an insult to Kassandra or make it a reference to Deimos who was technically Spartan or change the training name to something more ‘Templar-ish’) as an ‘experiment’.
He and the other Assassin children would be part of a special experiment to check if age is truly a factor in a subject’s surviving the augmentations.
Cross would have been a Spartan from an earlier iteration and he’s the first true success. He was augmented early (like around 5ish years old) and that’s how Abstergo decided they needed to experiment on different ages.
Assassin prisoners are free guinea pigs.
Of course, this means that Lucy is also part of the program as an innocent 12-year-old child. Perhaps even make her something like a sister to Desmond during their horrific augmentation, indoctrination, and training life together.
This would add more angst to the story if Lucy either dies during training or she is one of the successful Spartans who becomes loyal to Abstergo in the process, giving a more or less Cain and Abel setup between her and Desmond.
Either way, Desmond survives the training thanks to his higher-than-normal Isu genes and it’s because of his ‘abnormal’ gene makeup that Warren Vidic noticed him, taking him out of Spartan Training and making him become part of the Animus Project.
Same setup where Desmond relives his ancestors’ memories. AC1 plot ends with Bill being the one to rescue Desmond. From there, we go for the rest of Desmond Saga’s plotline which will end with Desmond using the device to save the world in 2012.
Lucy’s subplot, if we go for her living through the Spartan training, will end in Rome when she replaces Cross in the final showdown. Desmond will be the one to kill her and she dies in his arms. Whether they reconcile while she’s dying or she dies telling him that she hates him for leaving her will be up to you.
Either way, Desmond gets transported into his ancestor’s timeline after he uses the device.
Whichever setup you use, I believe that Desmond and his ancestors’ relationship would be similar in the sense that:
Altaïr would be the quickest to understand him because they have the most similar upbringing: children raised to be soldiers. Desmond would also recognize the Levantine Brotherhood’s rigid ranking system as familiar and would consider Altaïr as his team leader even if it’s only the two of them (Malik would be more or less his commanding officer)
Altaïr and Desmond’s relationship would be more akin to two puppets trying to be more than what their ‘masters’ expect them to be with Altaïr taking the lead as he’s more independent than Desmond who just accepts any orders given to him.
Ezio, on the other hand, would be the most awkward around him as he’s unsure of how to ‘handle’ Desmond. On the other hand, Desmond would totally be unsure of what to do when he’s around the Auditores and it would be easy for them to push him to stay and just… try to relax.
Ezio and Desmond’s relationship would be more akin to a ‘normal’ boy trying to befriend and understand a military kid. Ezio would most definitely spend his time trying to teach Desmond how to relax and have fun. (If this is an Ezio who knows who Desmond is thanks to Minerva’s recording, he’d also be the most protective)
Ratonhnhaké:ton would try to communicate to Desmond like he’s a wild animal at first because of how Desmond’s first solution to any problem they face is to kill the source but he’ll soon realize that Desmond isn’t acting like a wild animal but an abused one.
Ratonhnhaké:ton and Desmond’s relationship would be more akin to someone trying to help another person but not sure of how to do it. He also doesn’t have a similar support system as Ezio does and Achilles may do more harm than good thanks to his personality and how he handles his charges (ex: Ratonhnhaké:ton and Shay for different reason). Haytham is also a big red flag when it concerns Desmond as Haytham is a Templar.

Pizzapeople
HI!!! Relating to the post "pizzahead brainrot", I've made up a lot of stuff about Pizzapeople, which is the race that Totino is.
OK SO HERE WE GO
Like humans, Pizzapeople have a scientific name, which is homopanem, literally meaning "man of bread/bread man/man bread"
General biology:
Pizzapeople are made from pizza ingredients, like you'd expect. Instead of human skin, they have cheese. Instead of blood, they have tomato sauce. Dough/bread takes the place of a muscle structure, and for their "skeletal structure" it is basically just stale/hardened dough. However, because stale bread isn't very reliable as a skeletal structure, pizzapeople are prone to injuries, so they are usually a lot more cautious.
For the most part, their bodies don't have toppings on them, however, their faces do, which in case it serves as facial features. An example is Totino having a tomato for a nose and pepperoni as his cheek blush, and Giorgio (Pizzaface) having pepperoni for eyes and green pepper slices as his eyebrows and mouth. Toppings can serve as many different things, as example, a pepperoni slice could be a pizzaperson's eyes, or a mushroom could be their nose.
Diet:
Pizzapeople are an herbivorous species, they eat mostly fruits and vegetables (save for the ones that are used on pizza, which don't exist where they're from.) They obviously don't eat cheese, bread, or anything that could be found on a pizza, which honestly restricts their diet a lot. However, hypothetically a pizzaperson could just live off of bush leaves if they really want to. They're immune to poisonous plants due to being herbivorous.
Reproduction:
Pizzapeople are asexual. They can reproduce on their own, let me explain: If a pizzaperson takes a chunk off of themselves, usually has to include cheese, dough, and sauce, the chunk will eventually evolve into an exact clone of the pizzaperson. Heat is needed for a pizzaperson to be created, such as an oven, or possibly a fire. (However, caution is advised because they could burn, or their cheese-skin could melt off.) If a pizzaperson chooses to reproduce an offspring with a partner, both pizzapeople would have to take a chunk off themselves and combine said chunk. Like humans, the offspring would inherit the same physical appearance as their parents. (Example: Totino's mother has a tomato as a nose, and so does he.) Colors may also be randomized.
Sex (such as male or female) does not exist within the world of pizzapeople, also meaning they don't have sexual organs. (I FUCKING HATE SEX, RAAAAAAGH!!!!!!!) Upon creation, pizzapeople do not have defining physical traits that align to a gender, instead they are completely androgynous and their gender identity develops over the few months. During this period, they don't have a set name.
Gender identity:
Since pizzapeople don't have a preconceived concept of gender or sex, they are largely a genderfluid species, and regularly pursue romantic relationships with people of the same gender identity, because that's just normal to them.
Fragility:
During younger years, pizzapeople are more prone to physical injury. As they get older, they become more impervious to physical damage. Example: A pizzaperson who is 20 years old would most likely die from a stab wound or two, where one who is 50 or so would most likely, 96% be fine.
Regenerating:
Pizzapeople heal pretty fast, and their healing rate increases with age. Generally, simply resting and taking care will help the regeneration process. However if they are too heavily injured, putting them in a heat source, such as an oven, will significantly speed up the healing process, and will make them stable enough to function properly.
Melting/Breaking Apart:
Pizzapeople and their bodies are definitely not equipped to handle excess levels of stress/fear. Due to this, if they are under extreme stress, or extremely scared, their skin will start to melt off. In more intense cases, their skin will melt off from their muscle (dough) and they will bleed profusely. In extremely severe cases, all of the above will happen, but their muscle (dough) and skeletal structure (stale/hardened dough) will begin breaking apart.
Rebuilding/rebaking:
Pizzapeople can be reconstructed if their bodies are too broken beyond repair. In their world, they have medical personel who have the knowledge to rebuild them, but however in Peppino's dimension (which is basically the same dimension as Earth.) they don't. If they aren't rebuilt soon, they'll die. Simple as. However, if this *does* happen, take them to a pizzaiolo (if they aren't too horrified of seeing a mangled humanized pizza corpse) and they can fix them.
(IF I HAVE ANY MORE IDEAS I WILL UPDATE THIS THING BUT I'VE EXHAUSTED MY BRAIN)

this is a breakdown and reference sheet of shepard's scars throughout the timeline of the series including where the scars were acquired and any additional physical or relevant psychological details. tw for medical trauma and mentions of sterilization** ahead. major plot spoilers also ahead. full view on images recommended.
MASS EFFECT 1
the use of shields and medi-gel can heal most moderate injuries when used in a timely manner. Scarification is still mostly permanent but proper treatment can speed up the healing process.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
¹ˑ   eyebrow scar, acquired from a husk on eden prime. ²ˑ lip scar, a minor injury during basic training after enlisting. ³ˑ   scar tissue from the remains of a severe injury caused by thresher maw acid on akuze. the coloration has mostly faded to her skin tone but the texture is still rough. shepard is very rarely seen wearing tank tops to keep the injury concealed considering how quick people are to want to talk about akuze, which she is not interested in doing.
MASS EFFECT 2 / 3
after undergoing reconstruction through the lazarus project, shepard is missing her previously notable scars. her official cause of death was asphyxiation as she ran out of oxygen while breaking atmosphere; the velocity of falling from orbit burned her body beyond recognition and the force of impact when she finally landed crushed the majority of her bones. her skull was heavily fractured but her helmet miraculously prevented her brain from being severely damaged.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
¹ˑ   reconstruction scars, a series of strange scars from newly placed skin grafts which did not have time to properly heal. they give an oddly manufactured appearance to her as they follow natural forms and planes of the body (much like seams on a production mold would). in anything other than bright light, they give off a faint orange glow due to the cybernetics underneath. shepard is highly self conscious about these scars; mental stress seems to make them more prominent. ²ˑ enhanced optics, the first of several implanted cybernetics, these ocular implants allow for quicker visual recognition and scanning and are able to enhance mental processing to a faster rate. these implants allow her to make quick tactical decisions and auto focus on targets for her (adrenaline rush ability). ³ˑ  titanium reinforced skeleton, only around 10% of shepard's skeleton is made of her original bones. titanium was used as a reinforcement material due to the heavy impact of front line combat shepard regularly faces. after full augmentation and skeletal restructuring, shepard weighs significantly more than a regular human of her height and build. ⁴ˑ   heavy muscle weave, (NOT upgraded) her muscles have been perforated with micro-fibers which greatly increase her natural strength and reduce exhaustion and muscle fatigue. these enhancements can be physically upgraded, along with bone and skin weaves, but shepard decisively chooses not to augment herself any further. ⁵ˑ **most organ systems were returned to functionality, with the exception of the epidermis and skeletal system needing to be fully replaced, however her reproductive system is no longer functional. shepard no longer experiences a menstrual cycle and will never be able to conceive children.
POST MASS EFFECT 3
the consequences of choosing to destroy the reapers are both physically present in the galaxy, but also marked upon shepard herself. her body was found among the citadel wreckage, severely injured and barely alive after massive trauma to the body and brain as well as the catalyst disabling her more intricate cybernetics. shepard's 'recovery' is limited by the available resources in the wake of the aftermath; she is in critical care for minimum three months, repairing her cybernetic-reliant organ systems. intensive physical therapy is needed for several months following to adapt to her new prosthetics and regain her strength. recovery is ongoing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
¹ˑ  heavy scar tissue from multiple sources, some injury from the impact of the beam which transported her to the citadel, the majority being from the explosion within the catalyst. ²ˑ reconstruction scars still present but faded, continuing to fade with time. ³ˑ   cybernetic implants now mostly defunct. through gene therapy, transplants, and extensive hospitalization, her body has learned to cope without the more intricate implants. some of the less advanced ones were able to be technologically repaired. ⁴ˑ   amputated arm, replaced with mechanical prosthetic. her right arm was crushed under a bulkhead on impact from explosion; it was amputated on the scene of recovering her body from the wreckage. ⁵ˑ severed leg from initial explosion, replaced with mechanical prosthetic. the wound was mostly cauterized from the heat of the blast, preventing her from dying of blood loss in the wreckage.

MAKING OF A PUPPET
I'll be going over some headcanons about Scaramouche's construction in this post. While some ideas come from concepts in the game, not much about their actual physical being is known—for that, I've been looking at a lot of media involving artificial beings/cyborgs/replicas and will be using it as a rough basis. There won't be a ton of detail, but instead this is a vague description to bolster out headcanons (about weight, physical strength, durability, etc.). Toast and i have been talking a lot about them and also the segments, so...
I will start inward and move outward.
Construction:
To start: their body is a closed system. Assuming they avoid any deeper-than-skin-level injuries, everything is self-regulating and does not require any outside intervention. They can "live" indefinitely; their body will not fail.
They lack a cardiovascular system, although they do have something that resembles blood in the vaguest functional sense... if you can imagine blood as a glowing, purple liquid. There are veins that fluid courses through, although they lack a heart to pump it; there's an energy core in place of a heart, and this pushes that fluid through their veins. It's all electro in nature, after all, and there is so much you can do with polarities and electricity. As such, they do not breathe reflexively; the breathing they do is to speak and generate sound.
Their skeleton resembles a human one in shape—general bone shape, ribs, all those individual articulate moving parts. Their joints, however, are surprisingly delicate in appearance but deceptively strong. Ball joints, perfected (and sometimes complicated at some joints) physically and utilizing energy contained within their body to function. This is all constructed from an advanced ceramic, even more durable than known metals and exceptionally conductive. Added to the ceramic during its creation was the white wood of petrified trees, ground into a fine powder. This construction does include their teeth (which have sharper upper and lower canines).
There are muscles, but I won't pretend to have an idea what they're made of. These, like their skeleton, closely resemble those of humans and serve the same function. That said, they are much stronger than the organic muscles of humans, and alongside their ceramic skeletal structure renders them incredibly powerful when it comes to raw strength.
Everything internal is covered in a layer of silicone* "plates" that act as a thicker, more consistent dermis. These only open at certain connections and are otherwise constructed to protect everything inside and protect it well. Flexible and resistant to damage, this is also a good electric insulator to keep their electro-based internals from frying everything around them at all times.
That layer is covered in a much thinner layer that closely resembles skin, acting as the epidermis—soft to the touch, self-healing, and electrically conductive rather than insulating. This layer is perfectly self-healing, meaning they do not scar.
*Silicone-ish. Fantasy silicone. Magical silicone. Whatever.
Other details:
They lack the same nervous system that humans have; while they can feel touch, pain doesn't register unless they're wounded/affected beneath that dermis plating. This can sometimes lead to them not knowing they're injured.
Should they end up injured, they need to be repaired. Their insides are not self-healing.
An uncanny effect of their skin substitute is that it's very uniform across their body; where humans have variations in tone and visible veins beneath, they are unnaturally evenly toned. The only exceptions are the light purple electro symbol at the base of their neck, and those usually-invisible markings that glow when using their power.
They don't express with quite as much range as humans. They are capable of the blankest stare you have ever seen in your life.
While they don't need to, they can eat. Instead of proper digestion their body just obliterates whatever they ingest due to the amount of raw electro energy within them.
While they have (or had, in the case of breasts) some primary and secondary sex characteristics in the image of their creator, they lack a reproductive system.
They have no physical need to sleep, although they do need it for mental reasons—nowhere near as often or for as long as humans, however. Their mind just needs some periodic down time to process everything. Think of it like a reboot.

it’s 2 in the morning, why not..
as many hank thoughts as i can muster before i get too tired to type on my phone lalala this wont be all of it because i need diagrams for the one im rolling in my head
• they are a thief of a myriad of things whether it matters to them or not. a thief of other people’s lives, a thief of mundane belongings or a thief of body, it can be many things.
• pertaining to the thief of body idea, i like to believe that a large portion of his body did not originally belong to it. having died so many times and likely dying more times than we have seen on screen, i think his body being made up of stolen parts adds to the grizzly idea of a killing machine. and frankly, i doubt in the grand scheme it does not really matter to it. based on behaviors observed ingame, in cartoon and some questions answered during krinkels streams, i feel that functionality will override sentimentality, if any. if it works it works, if it wasn’t mine then oh well. it is now.
• blood type could either be AB+ or AB-, i haven’t decided what is funnier. being AB+ is convenient but nothing can be perfect.
• speaking of the amalgamation of parts, a thief of body, i think being made of many insignificant parts from those long passed will inevitably result in failings functionality wise that need to be accommodated for. maybe the heart doesn’t beat as well as it should, the pacemaker jumbling about with damaged nerves that scream to heal together and do something properly. damaged vessels and tissue making it difficult to perform some functions without aid.
• one of these being compression garments that aid in his ability to enact venous return due to damaged vessels not being able to maintain high enough blood pressure. sure, he will indeed work hard enough to have the support of skeletal muscle and the respiratory pump but i think there is definitely a possible issue regarding the valves and their ability to close in order to prevent back flow.
• may or may not have an artificial, shoddy pacemaker to aid in a steady depolarization of the heart in order to beat properly.
• may suffer from more bouts of referred pain than normal that lead to it on occasion having to be checked on due to what it may imply. referred pain is a phenomenon where an injury may be at one part of the body but is felt in a different part. believed to be due to interconnecting nerves, i think hank dealing with referred pain more than normal could be something. it may pose a dangerous threat to him due to his pain tolerance being higher and that it could possibly dismiss the pain in its arm or what is left of its jaw as something not important. you can decide if hank ignores it and pushes through or could take the precaution and recognize it could cause more of an issue to ignore it.
• due to all these parts not fitting together in a pleasing manner, i like to reflect that slightly in my design when drawing it with its clothes on. if you saw that one small note i made on a doodle, you’d see that i made it important to say that asymmetry is important for when i draw them. while i’m not the best at anatomy i want to reflect the unevenness of his body somehow, in such a way you could pass it off as just an odd fashion choice.
• another choice when drawing is when drawing the hands atleast in grunt form, i try not to keep the tips of the fingers even. i feel that their nails come in a variety of bruised shades from fighting, some are chipped, some are blooming red and purple underneath and maybe one is just plain gone with tender skin beneath it doesn’t really matter to it fortunately. this is why in some doodles hank may have full set of claws, mixmatch or none.
• zzz zz..
ouh im tired now lala lala zz

Broken Dolls And Mended Hearts – Morella Usher/Tamerlane Usher/Verna
A/N: Day 8 for @polyamships Multiamory March. GIFs made for me by @whoreofthecottage
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It starts when Morella collapses into Tamerlane’s arms, barely able to make it to the woman’s home. Tamerlane, sweet, headstrong, Tamerlane sooths her as best she can, calls for help and prays, deep, hopeless, prayers. She is barely alert when Verna finally gets to them, pain has knocked Morrie from consciousness and Tamerlane’s focus now is on keeping her breathing. Later, much later, she’ll admit she still doesn’t know what Verna did to heal the wounded woman. Morella had been badly burnt down one side of her face and body, one arm almost skeletal where the flesh and muscle melted. Now, mere moments after Verna arrived, it’s like nothing even happened. Small, tiny, imperfections show she was once hurt, but not enough for most people to know. Verna comes home again a week later. Morella had found Tamerlane, cheek cut open, neck bloodied and foot sliced so deeply it’s no surprise the woman can’t stand. Tamerlane is still sobbing in Morella’s arms when she walks through the door, pushing it closed to lock it. “I fucked it all up…” The same words Verna knows from another lifetime, another twist in the world. This time she can kiss the words away, this time she can fix it and help Tamerlane learn she is not at fault. “I fucked it all up, Morrie.” “No, no baby… no you didn’t.” Morella murmurs softly, looking up at Verna with pure worry. Verna had put things right but memories didn’t always heal. Tamerlane still thought she had messed the launch up, of course she did, but she hadn’t. Not here, not this time. She kneels quickly, inspects the woman’s eyes and smooths soft fingers over the woman’s cut cheek, erasing the mark, leaving a small silver scar, enough to remind them how lucky they are.  The neck wound comes next, faded completely. Her touch is softer still with Tamerlane’s foot, soft hands pressed over the wound, a small gasp of exertion escaping her before she focuses her energy. “Tamerlane, love… look at me.” Verna cups her face in her hands then, keeping eye contact even as she presses a deep, sweet, kiss to Tamerlane’s lips, watching her eyes, finally, finally clear. No mist, no pain, no lingering memories. Tamerlane’s body sags against Morella’s then and Verna speaks softly. “Lets put our pretty Bug to bed, we can clean later.” Later becomes midnight, Morella asleep with Tamerlane in her arms. Verna cleans, swiping away silent tears as she feels the pains she’s taken blossom on her own skin. She will heal, but for now, for now, she will carry the hurt, for her loves.
