I need help figuring out the best reading and language arts curriculums for kindergarten and 3rd grade.
I need help figuring out the best reading and language arts curriculums for kindergarten and 3rd grade.
So I am new to homeschooling and decided to go with a more eclectic style of teaching. I decided to pull the best curriculum for each subject from different sources. I really want my kindergartner and 3rd grader to have a solid foundation in reading and writing. Also, my kids are really hands on so I would like science to be learned through projects and experiments. I also want to focus on world history while building projects based on the material. For math, I am deciding to go with Singapore math because I heard great things about it but I would also like to add a math game in the mix to spice things up for them. I guess I would like a more hands on approach to most of the subjects.
My questions are: 1. Do you have any recommendations for the best secular reading and language arts curriculums? 2. Also looking for secular world history and science curriculum recommendations. 3. What is the most affordable way to get reading material since the library is closed because of covid? 4. Are there any new and fun math games you can recommend?
Thanks in advance!

“I’m falling behind”. Falling behind who? I just really don’t get being beholden to these curricula the way people do. I’m in a torchlight group. I bought the kindergarten curriculum to help me make country units. But most of the people in the group think they have to follow whatever they are told to complete for the day or...? I haven’t figured out what they are worried will be the consequence besides being “behind”. That dreaded word again. One of the things I like about homeschooling is the flexibility. We do school on the weekends. We add games and fun activities. That’s what’s so great about homeschooling. But people feel like they have to do all these activities in the order they were told to do them. Or that they have to do every activity assigned.
We are finding our type b grove now. We do logic, math (Singapore) and ELA (Logic of English) every day. We just open the book where we ended last time and work until we finish a lesson or I notice B has had enough. Then we take a break. We do unit studies in the afternoon. A few times during the unit I grab a sentence or two from one of the books we are reading and B copies it out. Units are whatever books I find from the library on the subject, whatever books I can’t stop myself from impulse buying, and videos and websites I find from my curricula (Blossom and Root science, Torchlight level k for countries) or Facebook group searches. I make a big list of those sources and randomly pick some to go over with her. We finish every unit with a drawing and narration of what she learned, which I write down for her. Once a week we pick a poem of the week, throw it on the fridge and recite it whenever we see it until we have memorized it. It seems to really be working. B has demonstrated a lot of new knowledge and I’m not driving myself crazy following a schedule.
It’s probably shockingly disorganized to most people. But I love it.

Rigorous Bilingual Training, Seen With a Tinge of Regret
Tumblr media
And we watched older children at circle time, studying the animals under the sea — the octopus has eight legs, the sea turtle is a reptile. They could all read, they were all comfortable in English. More than that, they were clearly comfortable in the classroom; they knew all the subtle rules of classroom conduct, like making eye contact with the teacher, raising their hands to answer, giving their answers in complete sentences. As we walked through the bright hallways, decorated, like day care and kindergarten hallways everywhere, with personalized cubbies (all the names here in English and Mandarin) and children’s art, we could hear much more raucous noises coming from the gym where groups of children were presumably engaging in more physical — and more chaotic — activity. All the classroom schedules featured playtime, built into the day in carefully programmed increments. But in showing us circle time, what the school was showcasing was something far more curriculum-based and far more instructional than anything my own children experienced in their years of day care. In fact, the people running the kindergarten acknowledged that parents in Shanghai are deeply aware of the competitive nature of the educational system for which the children are being prepped — and expect them to emerge ready to take tests and excel.I knew that some of the college students would have concerns about whether what we were seeing represented early academic pressure on very young children. But I also knew that my students were impressed — and so was I.The classrooms were cheerful, the teachers were positive, and the children seemed to be engaged in the back-and-forth of learning. Yes, the 2-year-olds sometimes seemed to be speaking English sentences they had memorized, without necessarily completely understanding them — but that’s also a part of how children learn language, and they were clearly enjoying shouting out the words together. And the older children — the 4- and 5- and 6-year-olds — understood what they were saying well enough to be making jokes and even teasing their teachers. When my own children were in day care, all those years ago, I never yearned after curriculum — I just assumed that my children would read on schedule, and read well, that they would learn math just fine when the time came (by the way, the Shanghai day care center told us proudly that it follows the Singapore math curriculum, which produces much better results than our methods in the United States.) But watching the process of deliberately creating bilingual 5- and 6-year-olds, taking full advantage of that remarkable developmental window that helps children learn fluent language in those early years, I felt downright wistful. To speak a second language from childhood is to have a more capacious brain and a larger connection to the world. I never aspired to having young children who were prepped for testing, or who had been drilled to get a jump on elementary school subjects. But I looked at the way those 2- and 3-year-olds navigated a second language, and I wondered whether I could have done this for my children — or found them a setting that would do it. SCRATCH Programming 101
Tumblr media
Coding is one of the most sought after enrichment programs for children. Learning to code poses a lot of benefits for children, such as teaching them problem-solving skills, giving them career opportunities and more.
Coding enrichment programs will be incorporated into the curriculum of primary schools in Singapore by the year 2020.
Coding literacy is best taught through scratch programming. If you haven’t heard about it, fret not. This article is your introduction to all things scratch programming.
What is Scratch Programming?
Scratch programming plays a big role in teaching children how to code. This programming language allows children to code their own interactive stories, games, and animations in a very user-friendly manner.
It is a free visual programming language developed by the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at MIT Media Lab. Scratch aims to provide a simple way of programming that can easily be taught to young children, preferably ages 8 and above.
The programming language was designed to teach children computational thinking skills through the so-called building block approach to software development. This approach highlights problem-solving. Scratch is available on more than 50 languages and is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems.
Benefits of Scratch Programming
Using scratch programming as a steppingstone to teaching children how to code has numerous benefits. Some of these are the following:
●     Scratch is widely used by teachers and schools for math and science projects. Thus, learning how to use it will benefit the students’ academic performance.
●     The learning curve is small. So, students learn something new constantly.
●     While using scratch programming, children will develop new skills and enhance existing ones. When working on projects, they will learn how to follow instructions and breaking a task in small sequences. Learning these skills will go a long way as the child grows up.
●     It encourages creativity in children through the creation of stories, games, and animations. Children are very imaginative and curious so using scratch programming will help in developing that aspect of their brain.
●     Children will learn how to work effectively and efficiently with others.
●     Children will develop a love for programming. They may even end up being the best programmers because they started with scratch programming at a young age.
●     Lastly, scratch programming is free for use.

First grade math curriculum
First grade math curriculum
I am trying to decide on a math curriculum for my first grader. He's talented at math, but I didn't push him that hard in kindergarten last year because he wasn't complaining and he was having fun.
I plan on homeschooling for just this year, ideally, so I need a math program that will keep him on track or even be a little ahead.
I also want it to be engaging and something I can do with him vs. online-focused with minimal prep.
Right now, I am pretty sure my finalists are Good and the Beautiful math vs. Singapore math. Does anyone have experience with these? I know The Good and the Beautiful is fairly new, but the samples I saw looked engaging.
