Where to buy books
Where to buy books
Where do you buy your books?
What are some of your favorite deals or impulse buys that were worth it?
Amazon is having a buy 3 for the price of 2 sale right now (Worth checking out if you are like me with a very long wish list of books). So I thought it would be a good time to for this post.

Anyone know if these books are still around? These are working great with my 1st grader but I can only find the Scholastic brands that you'd get at Wal-Mart. Or if I find these, they are used.

I’m not sure if I can do it
I’m not sure if I can do it
My child is in kindergarten doing distance learning but I’m questioning if we should continue or if it would be better if we did homeschooling where I teach her instead. Currently she is on zoom with her teacher and classmates for 2 hours a day. She’s had two assessments. The first one her teacher seemed really impressed because she knew a lot, just not very many sight words. Her second assessment she was messing around and couldn’t answer hardly anything correctly.
We have her set up in the office for her classes so she has somewhere quiet to work but she is constantly coming out and asking for things, saying she doesn’t know how to do things. When I go in and check on her she’s doodling and doing her own thing at the desk and hardly paying attention to what her teacher is saying. I know she knows how. She’s always been very smart for her age but she’s just messing around and I think it’s because she’s bored. I did the same thing all through school.
If we have her do the zoom session out in the kitchen or living room she is distracted the whole time by her sibling playing. I can’t sit in the office with her very long because I have to keep an eye on her younger sibling.
I do think homeschooling her myself would be better for her but I am worried about how I will do that with my other child who is always getting into things.
I would like to know how the day goes with your kindergarten kids. How many hours a day are you working on school work? And how do you do it with other children in the home? And is it all done at the same time or do you break up the school time into different time slots?

Random breaks
Random breaks
Do you ever give your kids a week or so off just because you can tell they are not absorbing anything? This week my son just was not into anything. Failing everything he usually does fine at. So I said "ok let's take a break." One side of me thinks that makes sense. The other makes me worry I am not teaching him to push on. He is only 8 so he is at that weird transition age and I am always second guessing my decisions.

I did an unofficial evaluation of my son’s reading today. Has anyone else used this form before? I will post the source in the comments. It’s called Running Record, and it’s supposed to quantify reading progress, which I think will be very useful if I can do it right.

Has anyone converted a garage or storage room into their homeschool "classroom"?
Has anyone converted a garage or storage room into their homeschool "classroom"?
We are thinking of doing this and I really need inspiration, because right now all I can envision is the dirty, cluttered garage lol. I would love to see your photos!

Grrr what do I do?
Grrr what do I do?
My 9yr old 4th grader decided today that he doesn't need school. We sat at the desk to start the day and we usually start a little later around 9 in the morning, when he was in public school he had to be up before 6am and on the bus before 7 so i let him sleep in a little. He just sat there put his head down and said I don't want to. Instead of arguing about it I just gave up and said ok fine. He went to his room at started watching YouTube I took the tv away if we cant learn we dont need tv. He said he is tired of learning the same thing the math, the language arts, the history. We do 4 days a week 5 to 6 hrs and on fridays we test and watch an educational video of his choice we try for an hr. We have to follow the rules for MO 1000 hrs a year 600 in the four core and 400 in extras. My question is what can I do to make it a little more fun and still get what we need with state? It's hard because we live in the country and there's no YMCA or anything like unless I wanna drive hours away. Should I mix it up do less hrs a day I just dont know.... any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I'm not ready to give up just yet.

Decision to homeschool my son
Decision to homeschool my son
I have a 5 years old in kindergarten who is in online school through his school district right now. But he started late so he started behind. We are having trouble getting him caught up it is a lot more then we thought it was going to be. The more behind he gets the more overwhelmed I feel. So I am thinking about taking him out and homeschooling him. I don't know how to start and if my husband and I can teach him what he needs to know. Has anyone went through something like this? How did you handle it?

Don't Know Much About History (starting the What Your X Grader Needs To Know series from E.D. Hirsch)
Don't Know Much About History (starting the What Your X Grader Needs To Know series from E.D. Hirsch)
My ESL daughter would have entered 5th grade this fall.   A few weeks ago I started using the What Your X Grader Needs To Know books from cultural literacy advocate E.D. Hirsch.
Hirsch expects more from kids than my schools did.  I don’t remember much history from elementary school.  We got “civics” explaining how the US government works, and then some American history, such as it was.  I don’t think world history was offered until high school.
A few weeks ago when I started my 10yo in the Hirsch series I realized I’d have to go all the way back to the Grade 1 book to cover early world history.  So she knows a bit about how ancient civilizations arose on the banks of the Nile and in Mesopotamia.  She previously got some of this elsewhere.  The Grade 1 book prompted me to cover Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.  The Grade 2 book will go into other religions.  She’s sometimes bored when I just read to her so I try to find YouTube videos and other ways to make it interesting.  I’ve found videos for kids about Judaism and the story of Jesus that she seems to enjoy.  I asked a Muslim friend for videos about Islam but she was bored with the first one he suggested and she had trouble understanding the second one.
I’m enjoying looking for videos because I also learn from them.
Regarding American history, I tried showing her a fun Schoolhouse Rock cartoon from when I was a kid about the pilgrims and the War For Independence.  It portrayed King George III as a selfish greedy tyrant, capriciously taxing the colonies to increase his personal wealth.  Everything I’ve found written for grown ups (except “Hamilton”) contradicts this.  I had thought that the Seven Years War caused the Stamp Act which caused the Boston Tea Party, etc.  Upon further investigation, the Seven Years War was way more complicated than I’d imagined.  It wasn’t seven years long.  It had lots of players, not only American Indians but real Indians (in India).
So I’m a bit overwhelmed with trying to teach history to a 10 year old without oversimplifying it!

Teaching Preschoolers and Kindergarten Thoughts
Teaching Preschoolers and Kindergarten Thoughts
I hope its okay to post this, I am teaching small classes through a portal called Outschool. Before Covid-19, I performed shows for preschoolers and Kindergarten at libraries, elementary schools and preschools in Los Angeles as Ms. Bits N' Bobs and Her Magical Cloak. My classes are small and very interactive. Ms. Bits N' Bobs has a magical cloak covered in toys. Each toy has a story associated with it. I focus on inspiring kids imaginations, when they interact in class. Then they will take these ideas and go and use their imaginations in the real world (off the screen). I have two offerings right now. The first is "Preschool Fun! Hello Noodle! Have You Seen My Poodle? Shapes & Imagination." We focus on learning about Shapes and what you can make from them. The other one is ABC's Nursery Rhyme Time - Share & Care! Ms. Bits N' Bobs & Her Magical Cloak We sing well known nursery rhymes and learn about the toys on the magical cloak. The kids are encouraged to share one of their favorite objects with the class. If you have any ideas for a class that you might want for your child please share it here. I'm currently planning on a new class offering called "Garbage Trucks, Dump Trucks and Tractors! Oh My!" Does that have an appeal?

Could I homeschool my adult sister and write her a transcript so she is a high school graduate?
Could I homeschool my adult sister and write her a transcript so she is a high school graduate?
I know this is a crazy idea but in Mississippi, the state has basically no requirements for homeschool other than telling the school district in writing that you are going to homeschool.
We homeschool our children already and my sister (and her fiancé) just moved in with us. We were planning to get them both GEDs eventually since they are both high school drop outs and it would help them with job opportunities. Sister is 24, fiancé is 21. What do you think about this idea?

Advice about a relative not being sufficiently schooled at home (UK)
Advice about a relative not being sufficiently schooled at home (UK)
My mother looks after my niece, who is 13 and should have just gone into Year 9 in the UK. However, she's been pulled from school because of a combination of bullying and COVID fear, and is now being homeschooled. My mother is the one that's doing this homeschooling - I'm not really involved.
But I've noticed that what they're doing isn't, in my opinion, a sufficient replacement for schooling. Instead of routinely learning and practicing Maths, English, and Science, they mostly just spend a couple hours per day watching educational shows about random things - space missions, kings and queens, so on. Not much active learning at all, and only for (as far as I can tell) a couple hours per day. There seems to be no attempt to learn anything on any Year 9 curriculum, nor anything that is equivalent. I worry that my niece won't be prepared at all for GCSEs and it might ruin her future.
My mother is very lenient, and I think has forgotten most high school-level stuff herself so probably doesn't feel confident teaching it. In my opinion because this is the way my mother is, my niece would be better served either returning to school or being taught in an online school or by a tutor, but they won't do that. I think it's just easier to let my niece watch some 'educational' videos each day and then play games the rest of the time.
I've tried to nudge things in the wrong direction but it's always met with procrastination ("yes, we'll speak to someone about a curriculum at some point", "Yes, we'll get started on the proper work next week") and it never happens.
Do you have any advice? Is there anything I could tell them or give them that might make things easier? Anything I could say to make them reconsider? I think part of it is they wouldn't know where to start with proper schooling. If they were given packs of weekly work to do or something that might be easier.
Any advice?
Thanks!

Do I have to send a GED Transcript to Colleges? (I sent GED Diploma and SAT score)
Do I have to send a GED Transcript to Colleges? (I sent GED Diploma and SAT score)
Hi guys, I was homeschooled and finished my GED in summer. I’ve sent my SAT score and GED Diploma to my early action/decision schools but did not send GED Transcript because I got relatively low score compared to that of SAT (1550+). I didn’t prepare for the GED and couldn’t retake it.
In short, DO I HAVE TO send a GED Transcript besides Diploma, even though I have a Homeschool transcript (unfortunately, that is non-affiliated to any educational organizations and purely done by my parents)?

traditional school to homeschool
traditional school to homeschool
Is there anyone who studied most of their life in a traditional school then shifted to homeschool? What was that like? Just wondering if anyone experienced that, because it's always the homeschool to trad school experience that's talked about.
(I shifted to homeschool after Grade 7. Personally, I didn't enjoy it, but I would love to hear about other people's experiences!)
