Malcolm & Marie and the Rise of Quarantine Filmmaking in COVID
https://ift.tt/3p29Il0
At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when accomplishing even the simplest tasks had taken on the burden of the impossible, Netflix’s “secret pandemic movie,” Malcolm & Marie, became a way to process a year of stalled projects and compromised creative control. A Deadline feature retraced how Zendaya, one half of the two-hander’s cast, reached out to Euphoria creator Sam Levinson with the plea for a self-contained project when COVID delayed the HBO drama’s new season.
As Levinson rushed to write a script based loosely on his own experiences of failing to thank his wife at a movie premiere, he and Zendaya brought on Tenet star John David Washington for a movie at the complete opposite end of the spectrum from Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster; the Euphoria crew, in a COVID bubble in California, were able to keep working for a few weeks in June 2020 when so many others were laid off. What they created was a passionate, claustrophobic black-and-white relationship drama that has the rare distinction of being created during a pandemic while its story still reflects life before the virus.
On its own, Malcolm & Marie falls somewhat short of Oscar bait expectations. However, the film takes on greater nuance when considered in the context of the growing subgenre of post-lockdown movies. While this may ultimately prove to be a short-lived category of filmmaking, it already includes four incredibly varied films. Even if they all started with the same universal constraints—COVID tests and social distancing, small casts instead of big—they make for radically different statements about human connection (either during the pandemic or not), futility, about purpose.
In fact, you can plot these four movies over the axes of ignoring COVID versus acknowledging COVID in their actual plots, and closeness versus distance in the execution of said stories.
Malcolm & Marie
Ignoring the Virus and Embracing the Closeness of Quarantine
What’s immediately ironic about Malcolm & Marie is that its setting is anathema to our current situation: The eponymous couple come home from a movie premiere (remember those?), where he (Washington) is being celebrated as a rising Hollywood talent, and she (Zendaya)—an amateur actress, a recovering drug addict, definitely not a model—has been reduced merely to his loyal girlfriend. Their feature film-length fight might take place within the bounds of their spacious rented house, but every source of conflict and sticking point exists out in a non-pandemic world.
At the same time, the viewer is tangentially aware of the real-world limitations in filming this movie, i.e. the need to stay in one setting with only two players. The inability to leave that house–except for Marie’s desperate little steps of leaning out the window to smoke or of that ambiguous ending–is authentic to anyone who has been stuck in a relationship-defining fight: There are no shortcuts, no escapes; the only option is to see it through to the ugly end, only to watch the toxic cycle start all over again.
The actors’ close attention and shaping of their roles lends Malcolm and Marie’s relationship real intimacy, but it also contributes to the sheer exhaustion of watching these young lovers metaphorically eat their own tails without getting anywhere. Despite Malcolm’s appalling outbursts and Marie’s stunning monologues, nothing really changes; even his quiet “I’m sorry” at the end is a puny concession after all that emotional effort.
In fact, this ouroboros feels most like a reflection of the endlessly unfruitful fights that many a couple has experienced since lockdown began.
Locked Down
Acknowledging the Virus and Embracing the Closeness of Quarantine
By contrast, Mr. & Mrs. Smith director Doug Liman’s Locked Down casts its marquee stars (Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejiofor) as ordinary people in the extraordinary circumstances of early 2020, when a pandemic that people still didn’t fully understand reshaped their home into a workspace, and work into a prison rather than an outlet. Steven Knight’s script—written in July 2020, on a dare—carries so many authentic field notes that it’s almost difficult to watch. You feel it from Zoom fatigue, with wine o’clock creeping up into the AM, to people talking over one another on video calls where they’re ostensibly checking in on each other.
Liman also employed the same amusing device used by the Parks and Recreation COVID special, in which real-life couples had to explain why their characters happened to be inhabiting the same physical space during this era of highly negotiating personal contact. In Locked Down, it’s Psych star Dulé Hill and his costar (and real-life wife) Jazmyn Simon as the sympathetic American counterparts to Linda (Hathaway) and Paxton (Ejiofor), an American and a Brit who are not holding up well enough in quarantine. (A bevy of cameos, including Mark Gatiss, Mindy Kaling, Ben Kingsley, and more also scratches that itch of wondering what celebrities’ homes might look like.)
Paxton and Linda’s marriage seems to have ended around Christmas 2019, but being stuck in their flat just as the pandemic hit—he’s a driver unable to work while she’s a CEO who has the excruciating duty of firing her “family” of coworkers over Zoom—has beaten their senses of purpose to a pulp. Paxton attempts to make up for that by making the masked grocery runs and trying to connect with his neighbors through shouted evening poetry, but he’s suffering the all-too-familiar depression of the furloughed. Linda isn’t far behind when she finally confronts the soullessness of her corporate job.
When fate delivers the incredible coincidence of Linda overseeing the load-out of a priceless diamond from Harrods—with Paxton assigned to transport the goods—the estranged couple decide to embark on a heist, because truly what else are you going to do during a pandemic? Ultimately, Locked Down does a better job with the romantic dramedy aspect than the heist, yet its use of the iconic London department store is as ambitious as Ocean’s 8 with the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Though there are more twists to the movie’s character studies than the logistics of nicking the diamond, the scenes in which Linda and Paxton stroll through the deserted Harrods food court—which arguably carries just as many culinary treasures—provide that same breathless sense of getting away with something.
Both films were made with unprecedented levels of safety and sacrifice, which regardless of the final products’ quality will always set them apart from pre-COVID entertainment as successes in filmmaking. But then there are the COVID films that have embraced social distancing, building it into a plot point or stylistic device rather than employing movie magic to obscure it.
Host
Acknowledging the Virus and Embracing Social Distancing
Interestingly, one of Levinson’s early pitches to Zendaya was a horror film, although of course they eventually pivoted to relationship drama. Fortunately, another enterprising group of creatives went the horror route, and they managed to fold in a poignant tale of female friendship over digital distances in 2020’s Host.
A British found footage successor to Paranormal Activity told entirely over Zoom, this indie tale has a shockingly reasonable premise: Five girlfriends, bored to tears during lockdown, decide to conduct a séance. (Again, what else are you going to do?) But when sarcastic Jemma (Jemma Moore) fakes a backstory about a suicidal friend and their medium Seylan (Seylan Baxter) mysteriously drops the call, the girls are on their own as a demonic force crosses over into the physical plane… and into each of their flats.

In the past year, we’ve all learned that Zoom calls can be awkward, boring, and occasionally revelatory—but this is the first time they’re truly scary. Host utilizes the familiar horror tropes of darkened rooms and whispered panting at the slightest of suspicious noises, but it takes on an utterly disturbing dimension when it’s five young women, in the prime of their lives, are all trapped at home apart from one another—not even that far, as Jemma and séance enthusiast Haley (Haley Bishop) live within walking distance of each other.
In found footage fashion, there are plenty of Paranormal Activity-esque moments of people getting dragged or lifted by otherworldly forces. Kudos to director and co-writer Rob Savage for remotely directing his actors, who had to learn how to do the aforementioned practical effects inside their own homes. But where Host is scariest is when it leans into Zoom technology, from a chilling use of silly facial filters to a sequence that will make you reconsider ever making a custom video background for your future Zooms.
As the demon begins picking them off at random, with the others watching in helpless horror, Jemma’s shift from apathetic nonbeliever to selflessly trying to save Haley is incredibly moving. There’s so much history to this fractured friendship that you’ll be rooting for them to reconcile, even as you realize Host’s final trick: It’s only as long as an unpaid Zoom session.
How It Ends
Ignoring the Virus But Still Embracing Social Distancing
You could make the argument that Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister-Jones’ pre-apocalyptic comedy could be interpreted as taking place during COVID, what with its many comedy stars all acting a conspicuous six or more feet from one another. It’s just that even if that were true, it wouldn’t matter, because there are bigger fish to fry. Specifically, an asteroid en route for Earth, conveniently set to make impact at the end of Liza’s (Lister-Jones) and everyone else’s last day in sunny Los Angeles.
Trying to make it to an end-of-the-world party in LA without her car, which has been stolen, Liza and her younger self (Devs’ Cailee Spaney) wander through the aggressively bright county, populated with other people doing their best to cope. Unlike the other films on this list, How It Ends makes no effort to hide that it was shot with stringent COVID protocols enforcing social distancing: Cameos from the likes of Fred Armisen and Lamorne Morris are shot on different floors of houses while Bradley Whitford is so far removed in his scene that it’s impossible to get him and Lister-Jones in the same shot.
How It Ends is more a series of loosely-connected sketches than a super cohesive narrative, but that’s how the film manages to bring in so many talented stars as kooky strangers whom the two Lizas encounter, from Nick Kroll as the shadiest of drug dealers to Olivia Wilde as Liza’s estranged psychic friend (a scene-stealer) ,to Ayo Edibiri (another absolute delight) as a teacher who decided, hey, why not try her hand at stand-up comedy while she still can? Even with this layer of grim humor, get ready for this movie to spark unexpected pathos in these Decameron-esque encounters between strangers. By leaning into the physical distance between these characters, How It Ends shows how even when faced with the literal apocalypse, humans will still hold themselves apart from one another. While Liza makes peace with a number of key figures from her life, by the time the asteroid is creeping its way to the horizon, she is faced with her most challenging, but also most freeing, task: To accept that it’s okay to just be alone with yourself during a world-changing catastrophe.

Check out our new NFL mock draft, right here
Tumblr media
D’Andre Swift is RB most likely to be a first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Georgia’s D’Andre Swift is the only ball carrier worth a first-round pick.
aThe 2020 NFL Draft is less than two weeks away. And it can’t get here soon enough.
The weekly mock drafts are driving me to delirium. How so, you ask? This week’s mock draft features a running back in the first round. The nerve.
But seriously, a lot of the first round feels firmed up. That might be the case because less news than ever is getting out following the cancellation of pro day visits.
Of course, that all means nothing is firmed up. Well, except the top two picks. Here’s this week’s look at how things could shake out:
1. Cincinnati Bengals: Joe Burrow, QB, LSU
Burrow’s home in Athens County, Ohio, is about three miles from Cincinnati. That means he is essentially going home to Cincinnati, making it almost a Hollywood script.
“If I happen to be the first pick this year, I’m coming back home,” Burrow recently said on Shaquille O’Neal’s The Big Podcast. “And I think that’ll make a lot of people feel a lot better.”
2. Washington: Chase Young, DE, Ohio State
There was a report recently that teams picking outside the top three haven’t even bothered to reach out to Young. It makes sense considering there isn’t a chance he falls outside the top three. In fact, it would be a shock to see him not go to Washington. The jerseys should already be printed up.
3. Detroit Lions: Jeff Okudah, CB, Ohio State
Is this selection starting to be locked in as much as the first two picks? Unless Detroit trades down to a team wanting a quarterback, it kinda feels that way. Okudah is the consensus best cornerback in the draft, and one of the top five prospects available. Not only does he start immediately on a Detroit team desperate for secondary help, but he should enter the season as the Defensive Rookie of the Year favorite.
4. New York Giants: Tristan Wirfs, OT, Iowa
Should the Giants take an offensive tackle or Clemson super defender Isaiah Simmons? I’m still stuck on an offensive tackle for the Giants. Wirfs is a player who could get looked at for either side of the line in New York and start wherever he fits best.
5. Miami Dolphins: Justin Herbert, QB, Oregon
We’ll see what happens over the next two weeks, but it seems like more people have the Dolphins taking Herbert than Tua Tagovailoa at this point. It’s one of the more fascinating late developments in this draft season and will likely go down to the wire.
6. Los Angeles Chargers: Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Alabama
Tagovailoa had yet another round of positive injury reports recently, but teams still have to be worried a little bit. They may not be concerned enough to knock Tagovailoa out of the top 10, though they could cause him to be the third quarterback drafted.
7. Carolina Panthers: Derrick Brown, DT, Auburn
For much of this draft process, the Panthers have been associated with Brown. For good reason, too. The Panthers last season finished 29th in the NFL in rushing yards allowed, and last in rushing yards per attempt. Add the loss of linebacker Luke Kuechly onto that, and Carolina has a big problem. Brown could remedy the team’s run defense issues, and give Carolina a player who can create pressure up the middle. That’s why he gets the nod over Clemson’s Isaiah Simmons. For now.
8. Arizona Cardinals: Jedrick Wills, OT, Alabama
In our SB Nation NFL writers’ mock draft, this pick ended up being Oklahoma wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. While there are fun built-in storylines of Lamb playing with former college teammate Kyler Murray, a blocker with this pick just makes more sense to me. Wills locked the right tackle spot down for Alabama the past two seasons and is NFL ready, particularly in terms of run blocking. He needs to fix up little parts of his game — namely, blocking inside rush moves — but he can help keep Murray’s pocket clean.
9. Jacksonville Jaguars: Isaiah Simmons, LB, Clemson
Do the Jaguars actually need Simmons after signing former Cleveland Browns linebacker Joe Schobert to a five-year deal? Sort of. Don’t forget, Simmons is a positionally vague player. He’s just as effective dropping in coverage as he is coming up and stopping the run. When Jacksonville took defensive end Josh Allen in last year’s draft, they proved they’re willing to go best player available over needs. This year’s version could be Simmons.
10. Cleveland Browns: Mekhi Becton, OT, Louisville
I would say this is a “run to the podium” pick for the Browns, but there will be no podiums this year. Maybe general manager Andrew Berry will break his keyboard after typing M-E-K-H-I B-E-C-T-O-N so fast. Still, I can’t shake the notion the Browns might want to trade down for some reason.
11. New York Jets: Andrew Thomas, OT, Georgia
The ongoing question about the Jets continues: wide receiver or offensive tackle? Offensive tackle or wide receiver? My choice is always the offensive tackle. We all know by now how deep the wide receiver class is this year. The Jets can still get a starting wide receiver with the 48th pick. The same usually can’t be said for an offensive tackle.
12. Las Vegas Raiders: CeeDee Lamb, WR, Oklahoma
“We don’t have enough outside speed,” Raiders general manager Mike Mayock said at the Senior Bowl this year. He also added, generally, that the wide receiver position has to get better for the Raiders. Lamb doesn’t have the pure speed like Henry Ruggs III of Alabama, but it’s more than good enough when you combine it with his ability to slip out of tackles.
13. San Francisco 49ers (via Indianapolis Colts): Jerry Jeudy, WR, Alabama
TERRIBLE SPORTS WRITING ALERT: Things went pretty well for the 49ers the last time they took a Jerry in the draft. The year was 1985, and the player was Jerry Rice. I think you know the rest of this story, nyuk nyuk nyuk.
Someone, please, fast forward life to April 23 already.
14. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Josh Jones, OT, Houston
Yes, this is the fifth offensive tackle off the board within the first 14 picks. But offensive tackle is a position we’ve seen overdrafted in the past. Remember last year when the Texans used the 23rd pick on Tytus Howard of Alabama State? Or the Raiders in 2018 taking Kolton Miller 15th? Hopefully Jones works out if he’s drafted this highly — and his athletic profile suggests he might — but getting protection for Tom Brady is critical.
15. Denver Broncos: Henry Ruggs III, WR, Alabama
Ruggs has been the pick for the Broncos countless times at this point. He was even the pick by Scotty Payne of Mile High Report in the writers’ mock draft. I sort of want to spend the next week poking holes in the Ruggs to Denver connection.
16. Atlanta Falcons: Javon Kinlaw, DT, South Carolina
The Falcons would be ecstatic to see Kinlaw still available with the No. 16 pick. Arguably one of the draft’s 10 best players, Kinlaw is a physical freak who can be used to rush the passer from the inside. He has length to bat down passes and enough athleticism to kick outside at times.
17. Dallas Cowboys: Xavier McKinney, S, Alabama
The Dallas secondary needs some help. That’s why McKinney gets the nod over a pass rusher. McKinney can play safety and cornerback, and is comfortable doing both. Starting two years at Alabama, McKinney should be able to adjust quickly to the NFL. While he can play single- or two-high safety, he works in the box and will cover the slot.
18. Miami Dolphins (via Pittsburgh Steelers): K’Lavon Chaisson, Edge, LSU
Ever since the Dolphins wasted a first-round pick on Charles Harris in 2017, the team has been lacking an outside pass rusher. Bringing in Shaq Lawson and Emmanuel Ogbah was smart, but the Dolphins could still use a rush specialist like Chaisson.
19. Las Vegas Raiders (via Chicago Bears): CJ Henderson, CB, Florida
Should the Raiders land a wide receiver with their first pick, they should not hesitate to use the 19th selection on a cornerback. That’s especially true if Henderson is available. Unquestionably the No. 2 cornerback in this draft, Henderson is a natural pass defender who knows how to time routes and can stick with all varieties of receiver.
20. Jacksonville Jaguars: (via Los Angeles Rams): Yetur Gross-Matos, Edge, Penn State
The Yannick Ngakoue rumor mill has begun to start spinning wildly as he continually talks about departing Jacksonville despite getting a franchise tag designation. If the Jaguars want to replace him, Gross-Matos is a solid option as an outside player. Gross-Matos had 17.5 sacks over his final two seasons at Penn State, and knows how to use his length and quickness to beat blockers. Sure, he has to get better against the run, but so did Ngakoue coming out of Maryland.
21. Philadelphia Eagles: Justin Jefferson, WR, LSU
If they wanted, the Eagles probably could have gone after free agent receivers Robby Anderson, Randall Cobb, Breshad Perriman, or Emmanuel Sanders. But they didn’t and all four signed elsewhere. That leaves the Eagles to the draft, and potentially Jefferson. He had 111 receptions for LSU last season, and anything close to that production in the NFL would be well worth the 21st pick.
22. Minnesota Vikings (via Buffalo Bills): Jeff Gladney, CB, TCU
It would be easy to see Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer falling in love with Gladney. The aggressive TCU cornerback is exactly what the Vikings need in their secondary. Gladney is a tone setter at cornerback who can lock down a team’s lead receiver. As the Vikings continue to have problems at the position, Gladney can be their solution.
23. New England Patriots: Jordan Love, QB, Utah State
Yep, I’m back on Love to the Patriots. For starters, I don’t see him falling out of the first round. And if he’s there when New England picks, Bill Belichick might have a hard time passing up on Love’s pure talent.
24. New Orleans Saints: Kenneth Murray, LB, Oklahoma
Although the Saints have All-Pro linebacker Demario Davis, their other linebackers — specifically Alex Anzalone and Kiko Alonso — have battled numerous injuries. Plus, Davis is a free agent after this season. Murray would give the Saints a young, athletic talent at the position, and the team could start to focus on building up the defense as quarterback Drew Brees’ career winds down.
25. Minnesota Vikings: Denzel Mims, WR, Baylor
I’m back on this pick for the Vikings at No. 25. As the draft gets closer, it seems like Mims is going to be a first-round pick. That means he leapfrogs receivers like Tee Higgins of Clemson and Jalen Reagor of TCU. Part of the reason could be recency bias. Mims had a stellar Senior Bowl and NFL Scouting Combine. In this bizarre year, the mark Mims has left could matter more than ever.
26. Miami Dolphins (via Houston Texans): D’Andre Swift, RB, Georgia
If there is one team that could take a running back in the first round of the draft, it is the Dolphins. And if there is one running back who should go in the first round of the draft this year, it is Swift. The Georgia product is like a combination of former Bulldog running backs Nick Chubb and Sony Michel. Swift’s vision is exactly what you want in a running back, and he is special as a pass catcher. He’s the kind of back who can be kicked out into the slot and generate a mismatch for the offense. You can argue the value of a first-round running back all you want. But it’s hard to see Swift failing in the NFL.
27. Seattle Seahawks: Austin Jackson, OT, USC
This isn’t a corny Pete Carroll/USC pick. This is more of a high-ceiling gamble on Jackson for the Seahawks. Coming into the year, many thought Jackson had top-10 talent. That type of player is still in there if he gets the proper coaching. Jackson’s foot quickness is impressive, and he can handle speed rushers well.
28. Baltimore Ravens: Patrick Queen, LB, LSU
At some point early in this draft, the Ravens have to address the middle linebacker position. Why not in the first round with Queen? Both Josh Bynes and Patrick Onwuasor left Baltimore this offseason, and the position is clearly an issue.
29. Tennessee Titans: Isaiah Wilson, OT, Georgia
This is the late first-round pick I’ve really fallen in love with the last couple weeks. Wilson is a mountain at 6’6 and 350 pounds, and he could still be growing after turning just 21 in February. Wilson’s standout ability right now is as a run blocker. Tennessee was third in the NFL in rushing last season and could continue that trend with Wilson replacing Jack Conklin.
30. Green Bay Packers: Brandon Aiyuk, WR, Arizona State
Green Bay’s need for a wide receiver has been obvious for quite some time. The players the Packers have currently have been inconsistent, besides Davante Adams. Green Bay never properly replaced Randall Cobb after the 2018 season, either. Aiyuk can be the dependable No. 2 receiver the Packers have needed.
31. San Francisco 49ers: Kristian Fulton, CB, LSU
The 49ers will need help in the secondary sooner rather than later, and Fulton could be their next lead cornerback. Fulton may not create a lot of interceptions (he had just two at LSU), but he knows how to break up passes thanks to his instincts and timing.
32. Kansas City Chiefs: A.J. Epenesa, DE, Iowa
The Chiefs would probably love to see Murray or Queen available here, but they’re both gone. If that’s the case and the Chiefs don’t trade down, they could target a defensive lineman like Epenesa. He would give the Chiefs a good player opposite Frank Clark, and one who has the ability to work outside and inside.

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi misses Cristiano Ronaldo being at Real Madrid

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has said he misses his rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo and would have liked his fellow five-time Ballon d’Or winner to have continued in La Liga.
Ronaldo left Real Madrid as the club’s all-time top scorer to join Juventus in a €100 million transfer in the summer of 2018. Since his departure to Turin, the two superstars have not faced each other.
– ESPN La Liga fantasy: Sign up now! – When does the transfer window reopen?
“Yes, I would have liked for Cristiano to continue in the Spanish league, at Madrid,” Messi said in an interview with Catalan radio RAC 1. “I think it gave an extra impetus to our rivalry, to the Clasico and to La Liga overall.
“I remember I said earlier this year that Madrid would notice Cristiano’s departure, just as any other team would, but even so, they have enough players to be at the top and fighting for everything. It’s Madrid and they have a lot of history.”
Tumblr media
Messi and Ronaldo have always contended for major individual honours, however the Argentina forward said this has never been his priority.
“I’ve never thought about finishing my career with more Ballon d’Or awards than Cristiano,” he said.
Messi also said he considered leaving Barcelona and moving overseas during the years he was investigated by the Spanish tax authorities. In the summer of 2016, the Argentina captain and his father were found guilty of defrauding the tax authorities of €4.1m between 2007 and 2009.
“I’ve had several [difficult] periods, especially in 2013 and 2014 when I started having a problem with the Spanish tax authority and everything that came out,” Messi added. “It was difficult for me and for my family.
“I think I was the first one [to be investigated by the tax authorities] and that is why everything was so hard. From then on, they showed they were going all out with me and proved that they would target all sports and footballers.
“During that time, I considered leaving Barca. Not because I wanted to leave Barca but because I wanted to leave Spain. I felt I was being mistreated and I didn’t want to spend much time there.
“I think I had the door open to many teams although I have never had an official offer because everyone knew of my wish and eagerness to continue at Barca. That, however, was beyond any situation that I felt for this home, this club, it was what I felt at a personal level. The only positive was that my children were young and didn’t notice it but we had a hard time.”
Messi, 32, has said he intends to retire at Barca even though he has a clause in his contract which allows him to leave at the end of each season.
“If they want me, I would obviously be delighted to remain at Barca,” he said. “I reiterate that my aim has always been to stay here.
“Nothing has changed; it is as it has always been. Each time it becomes clearer that my aim and that of my family is to finish [my career] here. First because of how I am at the club, how I feel at the club, and secondly, for my family. We are very settled in this city. Of course, anything can happen but the idea is to continue living here.”
Messi has extended his contract eight times since 2005 but has yet to be offered a new deal and his contract expires in June 2021.
“I don’t think there is anything yet from what I know from my father [Messi’s agent],” the Barca captain said. “I have always stayed out of all negotiations.
“I have not spoken to the Barca president [Josep Maria Bartomeu] since our Champions League elimination against Liverpool. But I have no problem with the president. I have never had any problems trying to sort out things with the club. On the contrary, it has been easy. Probably once it’s done [the renewal], there will be no problems and it will be done in no time.”
Messi, meanwhile, said he thought Neymar would have joined Real Madrid if he were not to return to Barcelona in the summer.
Tumblr media
Lionel Messi has said he misses the rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo in Spain.
Neymar was keen to return to Barca but has remained at Paris Saint-Germain with the two clubs unable to reach an agreement on the switch.
“I honestly thought in this [summer] transfer window, that if he didn’t come here, he would go to Madrid,” Messi said. “I thought he was very eager to leave, for a change, to leave PSG.
“I thought that [Real Madrid president] Florentino [Perez] and Madrid would do something to sign him.”
Messi said he believes his friend Neymar “regrets” leaving Barca in the summer of 2017.
“I believe so, that Neymar regrets leaving, that shortly after leaving he realised he made a mistake and that he had taken a bad decision,” Messi said. “I believe so but you should ask him. Knowing him and knowing what has happened, I believe so.”
Messi said he is hopeful of Neymar returning to La Liga in the short-term future.
“Neymar to Madrid? I don’t rule out anything in football,” Messi added. “At Barca? I don’t discard it either considering what the president said, which was that it had not been possible but in the future we shall see and that the door was open.
“Neymar is one of the best in the world, he is a player that tilts the balance, makes the difference and obviously to have him in our team would have been useful in terms of having many more options to achieve our aims.”
Barca did strengthen their attack by acquiring Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid. The France international has scored three goals and set up two more in seven league appearances.
“It is not easy to play at Barca because of the football we play,” Messi said. “From the outside it might seem easy but any player that hasn’t experienced the Barca philosophy, who hasn’t trained here when he was young, to come from the outside, as much quality as you could have, it is very difficult.
“He is used to playing in a very different way but I am sure he will adapt. We have no doubt he is a player with a lot of quality, very intelligent.”
Asked about reports that he didn’t want Barca to sign Griezmann, Messi said: “It is a lie that I didn’t want Griezmann. I said before that he was one of the best and the best are always welcome to a winning project that we all want to be a part of.
“I have never had any issue with him coming, on the contrary.”
Messi said that his time working under Pep Guardiola was “the best era as a player” at Barca while he considered his best goal to be “the header I scored in the Champions League final against Manchester United in 2009 in Rome.”

How AI: The Somnium Files Blends Absurdism, Love, And Dreams Into A Murder Mystery

How AI: The Somnium Files Blends Absurdism, Love, And Dreams Into A Murder Mystery
Tumblr media
Like many mystery-driven adventure games, AI: The Somnium Files is a little tough to talk about. It’s not exactly action-packed in its moment-to-moment gameplay, and most of the intrigue in games like it comes from the ways in which they challenge your investigative skills and decision-making–plot twists and character dialogue are often at the heart of it all. This is very much the case when it comes to games under the direction of developer Kotaro Uchikoshi, best known for the Zero Escape series.
Since AI: The Somnium Files was first revealed, we knew that it would channel similar gameplay elements from Zero Escape, but it’s aiming to be an evolution of that. As private detective Kaname Date, you travel between reality and a dream world to unravel the truth behind a series of murders. Its overarching theme revolves around a pun for the word eye: “eye” as in your sight, “ai” the Japanese word for love, and A.I. as in artificial intelligence. Not to mention all the murder victims have one eye gouged out as well. Date himself has one eye that’s actually an A.I. companion named Aiba (a Japanese-English pun for eyeball). And the real name of A-Set, the virtual influencer/idol behind music videos and promotional materials, is Iris.

Last time we spoke with Uchikoshi-san, he talked about love, story details, and the dream world’s Psync mechanic, but there’s still more than meets the eye. To get further insight into what’s going on, we corresponded again via email and dug into the game’s direction. We were also able to loop in the English localization team lead Alex Flagg for additional perspective on what it’s like to deliver a dialogue-heavy Japanese game to a Western audience.
If you’re not caught up on AI: The Somnium Files, check out our interview with Iris “A-Set/Tesa” Sagan or our hands-on preview with the game from GDC 2019. The game launches for PlayStation 4, PC, and Nintendo Switch on September 17 this year.
Can you explain the “Somnium” world? It’s the key to solving mysteries, but are these people’s secrets, true feelings, dreams? How does Kaname Date use that information throughout the game?
Kotaro Uchikoshi: Somnium means “dream” in Latin. So a Somnium world would mean “dream world.” Dreams are made from fragments of memory stitched together like patchwork. Hidden inside are people’s secrets and suppressed feelings. It’s Kaname Date’s job to interpret what he sees in the dream to solve mysteries and move forward in the investigation. For example, there’s something like this: A girl was alone at the scene of the crime. However, she suffered mental trauma and now has aphonia, so she can’t talk. So, Date will dive into the girl’s dream world and find a lead: she heard a phone ring. Then, Date will return to reality, go back to the scene to investigate and look for a cellphone somewhere. Something like that.
We’ve seen AI being both dead serious, cheery, and sometimes outright absurd. How do you strike a tone that comes together?
Alex Flagg: Through a lot of hard work! Uchikoshi has this amazing ability to blend Wikipedia-diving information dumps, absurdist theater, and sex jokes into a gripping and touching story. What I’ve discovered by playing and localizing his work is that you can get away with a lot that seems narratively inconsistent as long as you’ve already captured the audience’s attention with an intriguing plot and interesting characters. Uchikoshi taught me that tone can fluctuate wildly, as long as the heart is centered and steady. Because if your heart is fluctuating wildly, you’re probably having a heart attack and are about to die. You know, narratively speaking.
KU: This is a hard question. All I can say is…by watching the balance. If I were to compare it, it’s like a barista or a mixologist. Their jobs are very sensuous, and it’s hard to put into words how they balance the ingredients. Or maybe it’s similar to hitting on someone. You can’t always be serious and cool and you can’t always be energetic and carefree. They’ll just brush you off, won’t they? It’s important to understand when to be serious and when to be energetic… What I’m trying to say is that everything is balanced out by things and you can’t just explain it away with words. Having said that, my pick-up techniques have never been very successful. I bet Alex is really good at it, so next time I’m in LA, maybe he can teach me a few tricks!

There’s some body horror, light gore, and morbid imagery in your games, AI especially. Do you ever have ideas then stop yourself from going too far?
KU: When I was writing the scenario for AI, the character designs weren’t finalized yet. That meant that I only had a general idea of the characters while writing. That’s why I didn’t feel much guilt putting the characters through some really tough times. When the designs came in, I thought, “OMG, so cute!” That’s when the characters started to really exist. But then it crossed my mind. “Ah, why did I do that to them…?” I didn’t want to have a guilty conscience about it, so I thought, “Could I at least try not to put them through the darkest of my ideas?” Because of that, some scenes are now milder than the original idea. But this isn’t censorship, this is love. Love for my characters. I decided to tone down some things, but the story isn’t any less interesting or fun because of it. Please don’t worry about that.
What are your thoughts on canonical endings in games with branching storylines? How does AI handle that?
KU: I remember watching a Hayao Miyazaki documentary, and he said something like, “I’m over this, I don’t want to do this” while drawing original cels. Branching routes are like that to me. It’s so much work. I scream, “Augh! I’m over this, too much work!” while writing the story too. In AI, the story splits from the decisions you make in the Somnia. To put it simply, picking either the “A” lead or “B” lead changes how the story unfolds. Branching stories are a pain in the ass for the creator, but to the player, there’s nothing better. There’s a lot of interesting elements in this game due to the branching paths, so please look forward to it!
What are some important things Akira Okada (assistant director) has brought this time around for AI that you didn’t think of?
KU: Of course Okada-kun was a huge contributor, but AI was created from multiple ideas from all the staff members. For example, Aiba turning into a cute girl in Somnium, the video game inspiration behind a certain action scene, one of the stages from one of the Somnia. All of those were ideas from the staff. I mean, the Somnium parts, from the setting to the structure, was mainly done by Okada-kun and Yamada-san. I have nothing but respect and appreciation for the staff.
Are there any particular difficulties that come out of having to do a simultaneous Japanese and Western release?
AF: Oh, absolutely. Working side-by-side with the Japanese creative team is a totally different experience than picking up a completed project and adapting it.
KU: Thanks to the hard work from Alex, Kazu [Okura], the other Spike Chunsoft Inc. team members, and [community manager] Dave Kracker, I didn’t really have any trouble with simultaneous shipping. So, to the Spike Chunsoft Inc. team of course, the development staff in Japan, and the Chinese localization staff: I thank you very, very much, from the bottom of my heart!
Tumblr media
You get to control Aiba in the Somnium world, but you only get a limited time to investigate.
What are some Japanese- or English-only quirks you get to put in the game? Are there some unique things players will get out of either language option?
AF: The Japanese and English are largely the same, script and presentation-wise. There are a few times here and there that, say, a joke was intentionally not localized, or a character’s voice performance in the English has a slightly different feel than the Japanese performance, but for the most part they are two versions of the same game.
Some jokes or one-liners might come across differently in either language. And one thing that we’re very proud of is that A-set’s debut single, “Invincible Rainbow Arrow,” is fully localized, right down to matching the Japanese rhyme scheme and poetic meter. So if you are playing in Japanese, you will hear the Japanese version of the song; if you are playing in English, you will hear the English version.
How involved are you with the performances of the voice cast?
AF: The translator for this project, Kazu Okura, and I were either there at Bang Zoom! studios or listening in over voice call every single day of recording. While we offered feedback and direction, especially during particularly intricate or complicated scenes, we can only take a little bit of the credit: it was our audio engineer JP Aller and voice director Chris Faiella that really helped the words come off the page and become something incredible in the performance.
What’s the toughest aspect for localizing AI that folks might not realize?
AF: I would say the humor is by far the most challenging aspect of localization, especially “dad joke” humor, jokes that are intentionally bad. If you localize that joke to make it genuinely funny, you aren’t exactly matching the tone of the Japanese. If you localize the joke to make it unfunny, you run the risk of the audience not realizing that the joke is supposed to be bad, it’s supposed to make you roll your eyes and groan. AI is full of these kinds of jokes, so my translator and I worked very hard to make them funny…but not too funny.
“Tesa, aka A-Set, you bet.” was totally the localization team’s idea, huh?
AF: Yes, it was. Her slogan cheer is different in the Japanese and the English. In the Japanese, it goes something like “volatile solvent of the net world, Aseton, aka A-set!” It’s a wordplay on the honorific “ton” added to her stage name “A-set,” making it sound like “acetone,” the chemical solvent. Keeping it “Aseton” in English would be clunky, invite mispronunciation, and lose the cuteness factor of the Japanese wordplay. So we decided to go with “Tesa,” a cute, easy-to-say nickname that utilizes the game’s prevalent motif of reflection (“Tesa” is of course “A-set” backwards). There was a time we briefly considered making her nickname “Ace,” but Zero Escape fans will know why we decided against that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A-set has been a huge part of AI’s lead up. Besides being a major character and idol, what was the idea behind breaking the fourth wall with A-Set’s YouTube channel?
KU: One of the themes of this game is dreams and reality. So by linking the real world that we live in with the artificial world of AI, I tried to express the analogy (or is it a metaphor?) of “dreams and reality,” or something like that. Iris (A-set’s real name) is the goddess of rainbows in Greek mythology. She is said to be the messenger girl that delivers the words of the gods. Rainbows are also sometimes called the “bridge of heaven,” so you could say that A-set is the “bridge” between fiction and reality.
With all the lead up to AI and A-Set at the forefront, how involved are you in her video content?
AF: Very involved! Our team and the creative team in Japan were sharing ideas for videos and story beats for months, coming up with the general “plot” of her YouTube channel together. Once that was more or less in place, we localized and recorded each video based on Japan’s video, which was incredibly difficult because of the fast pace they had to be produced. Often times we didn’t even have a final video render to look at while we were recording, so we had to feel it out by the script alone. But it came together beautifully.
How’s she been as a promotional partner?
KU: She was amazing! I know there were times I pushed her, but she didn’t make a face and took everything very seriously. I thank her from the bottom of my heart. Also, she smells really nice. A sweet scent that tickles a person’s heart… If she comes on screen while playing AI, please put your nose up to the screen. I’m sure you’ll start to smell irises…
Will A-Set’s presence in our real world play into events in AI?
AF: “Our real world”? What a peculiar way of phrasing it. You can see her, hear her; she is information in the universe and she occupies space in your mind at this very moment. She exists in this world the same way I do right now, typing away at my computer, communicating with you only through ones and zeros. One and the same.
KU: I already kind of answered this, but Iris is the bridge that connects our world to their world. As long as she exists, both worlds will continue to be linked.
How much tequila have you drank since the A-Set interview we did?
KU: The situation has changed. Currently, rather than me drinking tequila, it’s more of tequila drinking me. My office is always full of it. That’s where I wrote the game’s story. Just like one of those caterpillars in the bottles of tequila.

Today The Daily Record has turned to an old and trusted friend as they attempt to construct scenarios where Celtic could lose out on big money and therefore more easily enable them to be caught by the chasing pack, and one gasping, toothless old hound in particular.
Yes it’s that old European Super League plan again, where “top Scottish teams” – that would us – would be denied access to the biggest club football competition in the world. This would, of course, erase part of our advantage over Sevco at a stroke, so you can see why this has become not so much a danger to Scottish football as that which many are now actively hoping for.
The article – which is one of those which is so bad they didn’t even bother to put a reporter’s name on it – is so ignorant and lazy it defies belief. It reports that Real Madrid are so angry about the cancellation of a single league game that they want to quit La Liga altogether and form a new elite league with the biggest clubs from elsewhere.
window._ttf = window._ttf || []; _ttf.push({ pid : 43792 ,lang : "en" ,slot : '.content .article-content > p,.teadsNative' ,format : "inread" ,mobile : false ,minSlot : 2 ,components : { skip: {delay : 0}} ,mutable : true ,css : "margin: 0px 0px 20px;" }); (function (d) { var js, s = d.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; js = d.createElement('script'); js.async = true; js.src = '//cdn.teads.tv/media/format.js'; s.parentNode.insertBefore(js, s); })(window.document);
As usual, Premier League TV rights are being held up as the motivation; Madrid are jealous, apparently, that EPL clubs are getting so much money from broadcasters, and are set to be joined in this league by the likes of Bayern Munich, PSG and … errrrr … various clubs based in England.
Who apparently are jealous of … their own TV deal.
Yes, this is where this story always falls on its arse, but no matter how many times you hit it with a hammer this particular spook story refuses to die. It gets up again like a movie monster, or the Ibrox operation, and shambles on forward.
This plan depends on clubs leaving their national associations to set up on their own.
Outside the aegis of UEFA and FIFA. Who hold all the registrations for their players. Who allow national teams to compete in their own competitions. Who provide the refs and the linesmen, and who are solely responsible for negotiating current transnational contracts.
It’s tiresome having to go through this time and time again; even if the will existed and these clubs were willing to walk away from their own national leagues, those leagues would struggle mightily not to allow it. UEFA would never allow it. Those clubs would be unable to compete in UEFA events, and their players would be banned from their national teams. A super league would effectively become an outcast organisation with no official status within the game; it would become a glorified friendly competition, with no going back.
The only way this ever happens, legitimately, and could work, would be if UEFA were behind it and the clubs were still playing in their national divisions. If entry to it was by merit and not by invite and it was an open process for every national league in Europe.
UEFA will never allow the creation of any competition which excludes participation from nations outside of the big ones. Never. There is zero appetite for it; quite the contrary, the day will come when the regulations which have just been put in place giving those top leagues four automatic places each will be overturned.
The game is heading for a more inclusive period, not less.
The expansion of the Champions League and that of the Euros and the World Cup points clearly to the direction of travel and the clubs can squeal like pigs all they like about it, but those threats to “go elsewhere” are empty and dumb.
For a start, English clubs aren’t walking away from their current pot of gold. Not in this lifetime, not to go and join up with some fantasy football competition outwith UEFA’s all-seeing eye. It’s a ridiculous, discredited, concept which somehow the media manages to get mileage out of time and time again.
And La Liga’s isn’t exactly worth a pittance. Madrid are jealous? Of what? They are already the richest club in world football, followed closely by Barcelona. They can negotiate their own, separate, TV deals at the moment and their income from them dwarfs which even the highest ranked team in the EPL gets.
This “jealous” thing is arrant nonsense.
So too is the idea of a super league, constructed without merit, based on how big a club is.
Or how big a club seems to be.
For all the EPL wealth the Champions League quarter finals will, this year, still come down to two clubs from Spain and perhaps one from Germany with the token English participants if they can get past the Italian and French behemoths of Juventus and PSG.
It’s all entirely predictable, as are the excuses which will follow.
Some people in Scotland can conceive of a football structure which isn’t based on merit.
You know why?
Cause they’d have been happy for us to build it ourselves back in 2012.
A competition built on how big clubs are rather than on what they do on the pitch would suit these people right down to the ground, because it’s the only one in which Frankenstein’s Football Club would stand a chance of actually getting in.
If it’s left to merit, these people will never see their favourite club compete at the highest level of the sport again. So I do get why this has become the fantasy of choice; not only would it result in Celtic losing access to the top competition, but it would give the press impetus for banging the drum for some form of cross border or Atlantic League – one of the only conceivable scenarios where Sevco would get more money in the door.
The Herald produced an article this weekend where they suggested that for the betterment of Celtic and the game we should consider leaving … and that makes the job drop. Since when did a national newspaper give us advice for our own benefit?
“It is why for their own sake and for the rest, Celtic must pursue other options …” says this piece.
Let’s remove the “for our own sake” part of it; this has got nothing to do with what’s in the best interests of Celtic. But it boggles the mind when you read people so desperate to get shot of us before ten in a row is wrapped up that they would be willing to risk “Armageddon” to do it.
Aren’t we, after all, one of the club the game here needs for its survival?
I am confused perhaps; how can they seriously be arguing that it would be in everyone’s best interests if we took our show on the road?
And wouldn’t that risk a future where Sevco became the dominant team?
Yes, but that’s not as bad for the game here as Celtic’s dominance, of course.
It certainly wasn’t during Rangers nine in a row.
All this is to say that I’m bored with the subject. There’s no way for Celtic to leave Scottish football; the route doesn’t exist. The European super league will never happen; that door has been officially closed until at least 2021 anyway with UEFA’s new Champions League format due to take effect the season after next and run for three years.
Nothing will happen – nothing whatsoever – in European football’s structure until that period is almost at an end.
And beyond that? My bet would be when snowballs have a chance in Hell.
I don’t care whether the hacks who churn this crap out are lazy, stupid, ignorant or just desperate for any chink of light on the horizon, something, anything, that hurts us even in the short term, but to drag up this discredited joke of an idea so consistently really reeks like a dead fish.
They’d be better off devoting some coverage to the mammoth crisis overwhelming their favourite team, and subjecting every person of influence in it to the scrutiny they deserve.
But that might hurt the bottom line and offend the PR people.
Much easier to recycle this old bucket of warm sick.

Week 16 observations you can steal to sound smart at Christmas
GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN – OCTOBER 20: Head coach Jon Gruden of the Oakland Raiders reacts during the first half against the Green Bay Packers in the game at Lambeau Field on October 20, 2019 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. (Photo by Stacy Revere/Getty Images)
The NFL season is almost over, but there are plenty of things left to unpack if you want to sound smart around your family at Christmas.
We’ve reached the end of the long wonderful and often terrifying ride that was this NFL season. As expected, the Patriots and Chiefs are among the best teams in the league. Less expected was the meteoric rise of soon-to-be MVP Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens, who own the best record in football. The San Francisco 49ers finally arrived and with them one of the most brooding defenses we’ve seen this side of the Legion of Boom.
Only one week remains, but a lot can still happen in that time. The Green Bay Packers can still win the top seed in the NFC, as can the New Orleans, and the Oakland Raiders can still make the playoffs.
Buckle up folks, Con Air had a smoother landing than what the last week of the season will bring.
So here’s a special Christmas edition of Observations You Can Steal, this time so you can sound like the smartest NFL expert around your family.
Raiders should be your favorite team in Week 17
No less than four months ago, the Oakland Raiders were the butt of everyone’s bad Twitter jokes. In true Raiders fashion, Oakland overdrafted a prospect rather than trading down to get him (or just taking the better player), struck out on top free agents, Jon Gruden was feuding with his General Manager (again), and the Antonio Brown clown show wasn’t yet as problematic as it became.
That team, which has lost five of its last six games and until Week 16 hadn’t beaten a team since the beginning of November, has a clear path to the playoffs.
As improbable as it seems Jon Gruden could begin the next decade by coaching a game in January.
Oakland doesn’t control it’s own destiny and needs a fair amount of help but this is what needs to happen:
Pittsburgh loses to Baltimore
Tennessee loses to Houston
Indianapolis beats Jacksonville (this helps strength of schedule for Oakland)
Cleveland beats Cincinnati (which also helps strength of schedule)h
And, of course, the Raiders need to win
That’s all extremely possible. Oakland is essentially the La Croix Girl meme if it was a football team looking at its playoff chances.
Baltimore isn’t playing any of its starters, but Pittsburgh is playing its third-string quarterback. Houston isn’t playing for anything but the Titans have a history of blowing it. The Colts should beat Jacksonville since they’re the better team and Frank Reich’s team ending the season with a win is critical to carrying over to next season on a high note.
Basically, the Raiders playoff hopes are in the hands of Baker Mayfield and Freddie Kitchens, which is the most unpredictable game of the bunch.
No one thinks the Raiders can or will win the Super Bowl this year. But for a team that was an afterthought before the season even started, you have to hand it to Oakland for being nothing short of entertaining.
Titans need to ride or die with Ryan Tannehill
The Ryan Tannehill shine has worn off rather significantly since he replaced Marcus Mariota and rattled off six wins in seven games. But the Titans have now lost two games in a row, which is amplified by the fact that they can now miss the playoffs after their improbable run over the last month.
All of this begins and ends with Tannehill.
He was praised for his play when the Titans were winning, so much so that it was reported that Tennessee was looking to not extend him but give Tannehill a brand new contract to be their quarterback.
Now that Tannehill has come back to earth, we can assess his situation with a little more levelheadedness. The question still remains the same: Is Ryan Tannehill the best option for the Titans moving forward?
Tennessee won’t have a high enough draft pick this year to replace Tannehill with a future franchise quarterback. Even if it did, whoever was drafted would need to win within the next two years to seize upon the window that opened this year thanks to Mike Vrabel’s defense finally coming into its own.
That leads to the next place to look, which is free agency. Veteran quarterbacks like Philip Rivers, Eli Manning will likely be available, but do either make the Titans better than they are with Tannehill? There were Rivers rumors a few years ago, but there’s a definitive end date to winning with Rivers, one that would mean repeating this process in a few years. With Tannehill, at the very least, he has years beyond 2022 to do something — Rivers and Manning do not. Of the three, Tannehill would likely be the cheapest and most efficient contract.
Windows don’t stay open very long in the NFL, and the Titans can’t allow another snafu at quarterback to hold them back. Recency bias is starting to subside, and Ryan Tannehill still seems like the best option moving forward.
Redskins need to hire Jim Caldwell
When something extraordinary happens in sports, the common refrain is to say this couldn’t be scripted. The Washington Redskins are that if the script was Cats, where nothing that happens makes any sense and the only reason this thing exists is that people once liked it.
There could be as many as six head coach openings this offseason, but there’s only one that nobody will want. Spoiler alert: It’s Washington.
It’s no secret that the culture in Washington is beyond toxic, something demonstrated on a number of occasions this season. Whether it was firing Jay Gruden, openly feuding with their best player after reportedly giving him the runaround when he had cancer, or continuing to allow Bruce Allen to do anything, Washington is a dartboard of things that you don’t want to have happen to a football team.
For as bad as things are, there’s one coach out there who makes too much sense to not hire. Jim Caldwell isn’t the sexiest name in the coaching pool, but he’s the right one for Washington. Here’s a guy who in four seasons with the Detroit Lions went to the playoffs twice and had one losing season. He was fired after coaching the Lions to a 9-7 record and a second-place finish in 2017. Look no further than where the Lions were when Caldwell was fired to where they are now with Matt Patricia to see just how under-appreciated and good Caldwell is.
Washington might want a hot name like Robert Saleh or Greg Roman, but having a fun offense or defense doesn’t make you a good head coach. What does make you a good head coach is being the winningest coach in Lions history since Buddy Parker left in 1956.
That’s over a half-century of misery that Caldwell undid and replaced with respectability. If there’s a perfect coach to try and turn the Redskins around, it’s him.

If you want to get started right now click to order your own copy of “Vanabode” otherwise read on for a more detailed list of what I reveal in this newest travel book. Other peoples comments also follow everywhere on this page. Picture: Glacier is only open about 3 months a year. This is why it is important to Vanabode, because you have the time to go and do, when the going and doing is good, not when your boss says you can. You will learn how and where to apply for thousands of jobs that you can do without experience while camping all over the United States in some of the most exciting destinations you have ever imagined. I have personally worked this way since 1994 and exclusively this way since 2005. You will learn how to get the time and money for a temporary retirement, sabbatical, or extended vacation. You will find this work invaluable if you want more time to yourself: to write a book, compose music, create a movie script, or get back on your feet after a divorce, financial disaster, or family tragedy. You will learn how to live super cheaply off the grid even if you don’t want to travel. You will learn how to get great sleep, how to maintain proper personal hygiene with hot showers and toilet strategies, how to eat and afford delicious exotic meals, all while living a life of adventure; safely, easily, and cheaply. You will learn how to cook hot meals anywhere without electricity, fire or fuel, made from the freshest ingredients including organic fruits, vegetables, meats, artisan breads, and cheeses purchased from thousands of farmers markets and roadside produce stands across the country. You will learn how to get rid of all your debt and stay debt free from now on. Image shows a wild sea turtle photographed off the coast of Florida at a secret secluded clothing optional beach. My wife and I go Adam and Eve for days here in pristine delicious privacy whenever we are in Florida. The location is revealed in the book along with special must follow parking strategies. You will learn how to happily live a complete and fulfilled life without home ownership hassles, mortgage payments, electricity bills, water bills, tax bills, homeowners association payments, real estate taxes, sewage or trash bills, house insurance payments, pest control expenses, and more. I will show anyone that thinks they cannot afford to travel, how to do so. “Vanabode takes the biggest expenses incurred in a long vacation (airfare, lodging and ground transportation costs) and throws them out the window. Unbelievable but true…well done. If I could hug the author I would.” Lucille currently hitting northern California I show poker players who want to travel in America to exciting places like Las Vegas and California, how to live the professional poker players dream while preserving and growing their bankroll. I show displaced workers, and those struggling financially, how to cut costs and survive with their integrity and dignity intact. I show those who don’t want a house to keep up with, like young surfers or college students, how to live a fun life without a mortgage payment or the responsibility of a house. I show RV owners how to happily downsize from their massive motor homes and fifth wheels, all the while saving money and expanding the places they can travel to. I show retirees the best way to keep their house if they want to, but still travel cheaply and easily. I show short term casual campers and normal families with young school age children, how to travel and camp cheap and hassle free. “How many books have you ever bought that showed you how to get out of debt, travel AND find a job while doing it? This is crazy, but I’m on board now baby and loving it” Eileen Mathews in Detroit “The only book that you need to travel the entire United States. Period.” Matt in Raleigh Survivalists or those being stalked can learn how to disappear, leave their past behind, and become invisible to creditors, government agencies, credit bureaus, and anyone else they wish to avoid. I show anyone that wants to run a mobile business like a website, hot dog cart, or consulting company for example, how to do so with very little overhead, freeing up their time and money. I show those with a chronic fatal disease how to enjoy life to the fullest before dying. To Vanabode is to live: NOW. Come with me and you will discover why this revolutionary lifestyle is so unique and sustainable. I am not talking about a tiny little one-week-a-year trip to a distant place surrounded by tourists where you hope the weather is good and pray you don’t get sick and for a few hours you can almost forget your tired stress filled life back home. Then you board the plane or ship and head back to your old life; tired, sad and wanting so much more. NO! I am talking about a method of traveling and living that is so much bigger, so much more sustainable, so much more fun and enriching, that once you start you will never…ever…view your life the same way again. When I bought Vanabode I was very depressed and I thought my wife was leaving me for sure. When I showed her the plans you outline she changed her mind and broke down in tears and said “Lets go together, please, please, don’t you see I just want to spend time with you. I am sick of all the stress that is tearing us apart. I wanted to leave THIS LIFE that has become such a grind, not leave YOU!”, anonymous from Toledo “Intelligent insight coupled with a lot of one-of-a-kind information. . .” pro book reviewer “I don’t care what kind of vehicle you use to see America, get this book. He contrasts all kinds of living and traveling strategies from being homeless to being rich, from tractor trailers to backpacking, from houseboats to van camping. You will get the compete picture and when you’re done you may be as convinced as I am (and as he is) that this Vanaboding is by far the greatest way to do it all” Sam Stout in Baja Mexico “If you want to go anywhere for more than 2 weeks at a time, then you should certainly buy this book” Peter Arkins, Washington National parks represent a treasure that we were astonished to find were frequented by foreigners more often than by U.S. citizens. When I asked my friends why they never went they all said the same thing. They were too far away and they could never get enough time off work to go. Vanabode solves these problems first. The book demonstrates how to make both the time and the money to visit these extraordinary national gems for months at a time. Half Dome reflection at Yosemite National Park image © Starletdarlene – Dreamstime.com “Edward Hasbrouck is considered by most to be the top authority on world travel having worked his way slowly through some 35+ countries in 35+ years. He is the author of the worlds most complete work on travel around the world titled “the Practical Nomad”. He has this to say (quote) “No other country is more geographically diverse than the United States.” (unquote) So what is stopping you? With this masterful book and proposed new way of life that the author calls Vanabode you can actually experience the greatest sights in the world from the safest country, cheaply and easily by van. No planes, trains, or buses needed.” Charles Saunders “I had a lot of legitimate “excuses” why I could not travel. He covers all of them in this book. I put his solutions to work and we have been camping in Utah for 6 weeks now. The kids are fine, the bills are paid, and we are eating better than ever. Fantastic!” Anthony & Margaret Thomason – Miami Wikipedia’s definition of a “disruptive technology” or “disruptive innovation” describes Vanabode precisely; innovations that improve a product or service in ways that the market does not expect, typically by being lower priced or making something for everyone that was previously only available to the rich. Goat Rock State Park offers a rugged far out landscape to enjoy. Far from the crowds you can find peace and a lot of things to do. Can you see the beach? Can you see the rocky cliffs? Can you see the hiking trails? Whales, seals, fish, deer, birds and more abound here. You just need the time to take it all in. We spent a full week for free in this misty spellbinding place. “I don’t care if you think it will be a year or even 5 years before you can leave on your trip of a lifetime. This is exactly what I have been doing for 20 years, trying to earn enough money to buy our family a fun life. Thank you so much for clarifying this and helping me on my way to finally living a fun life. I’m a single 41 year old woman and I’ve never had this much help, confidence and fun” Samantha The best thing with the lifestyle the author is proposing here is it is sustainable: you can happily, safely and affordably do it for the rest of your life if you wanted to. . .” Andrew from New Hampshire California beaches are astonishing though they are much colder than Florida. Ramblings: Ovechkin Clicking at Career-Rate, Rantanen On Another Planet, Meier, & Johnsson (Dec 12)
Alex Ovechkin – USA Today Sports Images
William Nylander hit the scoresheet for the first time this season. The 22-year-old led the way for the Leafs with two even-strength assists as they beat the Hurricanes 4-1 on Tuesday evening. Nylander continued to skate alongside Nazem Kadri and Patrick Marleau on the team's third line. He's also working the half-wall on the team's second power-play unit.
It isn't exactly the ideal spot to push his metrics to the next level, but it should be enough for him to play at a 60-point pace – about where I'd peg his floor to be.
  **
Freddie Andersen continues to roll on. The 29-year-old has been the best fantasy netminder in all setups. His win tonight pushes his record to 17-8-0 with a 0.928 save percentage. He's posted a quality start rate of 72 percent. That's a puck-stopper you can rely on.
  **
Andreas Johnsson scored a goal on Tuesday night but it was quickly changed to give credit to Morgan Rielly. Despite the pointless night, Johnsson has been playing well of late. He was a sleeper pick by many last offseason to break out in Toronto this year. He started his season by watching up in the press box as a healthy scratch. When he did get into the lineup, it was in a depth role.
Well, Willy Nylander is back in Leaf-land and things are moving and shaking. Johnsson has been lining up on the left side of Auston Matthews at even strength the past few games. He's also seeing his fair share of second power-play unit duties.
The 24-year-old has made the most of his upgrade in deployment.  He came into the game against Carolina with two consecutive games with a goal and an assist. He’s owned in just 16 percent of Yahoo leagues but that number is climbing.
Patty Marleau doesn’t look like a true fit beside Matthews, and Johnsson’s speed, skill and tenacious-style fits well to pursue the puck and cause turnovers for the big pivot to operate with. I love this type of streamer. A young player with upside who is in a good spot. He won’t see PP1 time, so the results will be held back to some degree. But he could become a staple on that line with a few more strong performances.
  Buy-in if you can.
  **
It was reported that Ryan Miller will miss six weeks with a sprained MCL. The Ducks wasted no time in claiming Chad Johnson off of waivers from St Louis to provide some support to John Gibson.
Jordan Binnington is the new back-up in STL. The 25-year-old has a single NHL game on his resume. He managed to wrestle the starting gig in the American league from Ville Huuso who has been projected as the up and comer for a few seasons.
With the way the Blues are playing these days, it is conceivable that Binnington sees some ice, but the results will likely be very muted.
  **
It was Jake Allen who got the start and the win against the Panthers on Tuesday. St Louis needed this one. After getting shelled on home ice by Vancouver on Sunday, the media was all over the practice tilt involving Bortuzzo and Sanford. Perhaps that was the gelling moment for a squad that should be much better than they've been.
David Perron (2+0), Brayden Schenn (1+1) and Jaden Schwartz (0+2) led the way for the Blues.
  **
Speaking of bad teams, the Blackhawks dropped their eighth consecutive contest on Tuesday. They fell 6-3 the Jets on the road.
Winnipeg was led by Kyle Connor and his two tallies. Dustin Byfuglien chipped in with three assists. He seems to be back to his old ways after that terribly managed concussion.
  **
More injuries in Anaheim? You don't say. This time it's the team’s top left-wing, Rickard Rakell who continues to be out with a sprained ankle. There is no timeline for his return at this point.
That’s another gaping hole on a team that has been decimated with injuries this season. It was Pontus Aberg who rolled next to Getzlaf and Ondrej Kase on the team’s ‘top line’ during the last game. Aberg and Sprong both took turns on the team’s top power play unit.
No one is replacing Rackell in the short term, but Sprong or Aberg could provide some streaming options if they are getting exposure to Getzlaf in all situations.
  **
Boston and Arizona squared off in a cross-conference battle that drew…very little attention. While it didn't have the heat of a divisional matchup, this was a good game. The Coyotes jumped out to a 2-0 lead after Nick Schmaltz and Nick Cousins potted first-period tallies. Schmaltz has seven points in the seven games since landing in the desert. Here's hoping you bought in when we told you to.
The Bruins stormed back to score four unanswered goals. Brad Marchand popped two. David Pastrnak chipped in with a goal and two helpers. The Bruins haven't been their dominant self with Patrice Bergeron on the shelf. But they're finding their way.
Of note, Ryan Donato skated on the team's second line and top power-play unit. He saw 3:35 of PPTOI and recorded an assist and two shots on goal. That's the type of deployment you want to see the young sharp-shooter receive to start considering him an asset for this season.
  **
The NHL has its first 50-point scorer in 2018-19. Mikko Rantanen buried his 13th and 14th goals of the season and added two assists on Tuesday in a 6-4 loss to the Oilers. That extended his point streak to 12 games and 23 points. This dude is on another planet.
He has a six-point lead atop the Art Ross race.
  **
Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl combined for five points in the victory. Drai was chucking some backhand sauce out there.
  https://dobberhockey.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2018/12/Drai-to-McD.mp4
The big German has quietly slid into the top-15 point producers with 37 points in 31 contests. He and McDavid belong together. I don't ever want to see those two split up again.
Mikko Koskinen was good once again. Ken Hitchcock appears to have cleaned the squad up defensively, and it's Koskinen who is thriving the most. He sporting a 0.928 save percentage in 15 games played. He has two regulation losses in his last 11 games and has posted a quality start rate of 60 percent.
  The crease is his.
  **
The LA Kings are dreadful. Leading the Sabres 3-1 heading into the third period they managed to blow things. Jeff Skinner ended up potting the overtime winner, his 21st of the season. His captain and linemate, Jack Eichel contributed a goal and an assist. It was his fifth multi-point outing in the last six games.
Eichel now sits tied for ninth in NHL scoring with 38 points in 31 contests. The 22-year-old has officially arrived. And so have the Sabres. Buffalo is solidly in the playoffs and third in their division. Just three points behind the Leafs for second. It's been a long road in upstate New York, it's good to finally see some success.
Rasmus Dahlin was held off the scoresheet in this one. But the 18-year-old played 28:34, had eight shots and three blocks. He played 10:04 on the man-advantage!
Fret not keeper league owners, his counting stats may not jump off the page just yet, but he's out there doing things like this before he even has to shave. Imagine what he'll do in a year or three.
  https://dobberhockey.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2018/12/Dahlin-dangles.mp4
  **
Nick Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin teamed up to lay a beatdown on the Red Wings on Tuesday. Ovi proceeded to score three goals to push his league-leading total to 25 in 30 games. The 33-year-old has never had that many tallies through 30 games in any of his previous 13 seasons.
Let that sink in for a moment. He's 33 years old and on pace for his highest output yet. The man is pacing for 68 goals!
  What a legend.
Ovechkin is currently riding an 11-game point streak where he's scored 13 goals and 19 points.
Meanwhile, Backstrom continues to be the most underappreciated fantasy star ever. Left for dead by many after a 'disappointing' 71-point campaign a year ago and looking like his days of dishing to Ovi at even-strength were over. Well, turns out he's far from dead. The 31-year-old has 38 points in 30 games to be living in the top-10 league-wide.
I keep trying to trade for him in my main league and you should too.
**
Rick Roos is rolling again with his annual Cage Match Tournament. Check out the forums to vote for The New Normal edition.
  **
Gus Nyqvist potted a goal and an assist. The 29-year-old has produced nine points in the six games since Anthony Mantha went down with a hand injury. Nyqvist is having his best start to date with 28 points in 32 games. A quiet but effective producer who is seeing high-end deployment.
That's a good combination.
**
The requisite Elias Pettersson tidbit.
Heading into Tuesday’s contests, Pettersson had 15 goals and 30 points in 26 career games. Here’s a look at some other current stars and their totals after 26 contests.
Some current NHL stars and their points totals after 26 career games:
  Elias Pettersson – 30
Evgeni Malkin – 30
Alex Ovechkin – 29
Sidney Crosby – 28
Connor McDavid – 28
Patrick Kane – 27
Patrik Laine – 21
Johnny Gaudreau – 20
Auston Matthews – 20
  {source}<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Adjust for scoring era and this changes but worth noting.<br><br>Some other comparables in their first 26 games:<br><br>Yashin – 34 pts<br>Selanne – 34 pts<br>Lindros – 34 pts<br>Sakic – 33 pts<br>Makarov – 32 pts.<br><br>All but the first guy are in the HHOF.<br><br>Pettersson is tied with Malkin for 6th.</p>— Stephen Burtch (@SteveBurtch) <a href="https://twitter.com/SteveBurtch/status/1072623138553368576?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">December 11, 2018</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>{/source}
    **
Since we're talking about Pettersson (when am I not?), the 20-year-old rookie posted a goal and an assist in Tuesday's 3-2 win over Columbus. His 32 points in 27 games vaults into the top-30 for skaters league-wide. His 1.19 points-per-game represent the 18th best mark.
As amazing as that is, the thing that really stands out is that 1.19 points-per-game is only good for 18th in the league! We are living in a high-scoring and enjoyable time. Perhaps the 22 skaters that played at or above a point-per-game last year wasn't an aberration after all. The goalie pads are slimmer, and the red lights are warmer.
  Good times.
  **
The Wild laid the boots to Canadiens 7-1 on home ice on Tuesday. Matt Dumba scored two goals, while Zach Parise added a goal and two helpers.
Dumba has been good again this season. The 24-year-old has 12 goals and 21 points in 30 games this year. His 12 markers lead all blueliners and he's on pace for another career year. That would be five seasons in a row where the former WHL stud improved on his goal and point total.
  **
Jeff Petry may not be working the top power-play unit in Montreal now that Shea Weber is healthy, but that hasn't slowed him down yet. The veteran defender has five points in the five games since Weber rejoined the team.
His five-on-five shooting percentage is a bit high, but the rest of his metrics remain solid. Better not drop him yet.
  **
Let's talk about Timo Meier for a moment. The 22-year-old is tied for 10th in the NHL with 26 even-strength points. His 3.6 P/60 is 17th most – tied with Crosby, Wheeler, Eichel, Pasta, and Malkin.
He's putting 3.31 shots on goal per night and is on pace for 44 goals and 82 points in 79 games.
PLUS! his name is really fun to say.
Teeeee-moe!
People need to be waking up on this kid. He’s a play-driver and he’s driving the bus in San Jose as a third-year player. We keep waiting for his numbers to slag, but there have been no signs of slowing down yet.

9 Top Tips For Surviving Twitter As A Right Wing Thought Criminal
Should you decide to enlist in the culture war hosted on the Twitter-dot-com hellscape (where every day is Hamburger Hill), there are some things that you need to learn and apply in order to survive to tweet another day. Welcome to boot camp, you scrubs and noobs.
(function(w,d,s,i){w.ldAdInit=w.ldAdInit||[];w.ldAdInit.push({slot:10817585113717094,size:[0, 0],id:"ld-7788-6480"});if(!d.getElementById(i)){var j=d.createElement(s),p=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];j.async=true;j.src="//cdn2.lockerdomecdn.com/_js/ajs.js";j.id=i;p.parentNode.insertBefore(j,p);}})(window,document,"script","ld-ajs");
1. Choose Your Fighter
You, dear-never-ever-before-user of Twitter should take the time to read the Terms of Service. There are a plethora of words and behaviors that can get you booted from the platform and all of them are vaguely explained with the broadest interpretation possible. Once you've read Twitters soul sucking list of obligatory rules that severely limit your speech while protecting it for the people you cross intellectual swords with in the idea war, you are ready to build your player.
As Twitter is becoming pretty censorious, I'm also on: Gab: https://t.co/TrQ2JW4sAI YouTube: https://t.co/1NfMOYwkbF FB: https://t.co/zeAtcHTDcf WT: https://t.co/xs18l5Tpkc pic.twitter.com/EkVtklMN10
— Orwell & Goode 🇨🇱 (@OrwellNGoode) May 14, 2018
The limits are on the far end of infinity. You may choose to be a cute doggo, or perhaps an ms-paint frog or toad, an oft overlooked historical figure, a painting, or a parody of a living or dead celebrity with a morbidly hilarious twist. Your creativity in creating your avatar and name has a moment to really shine here but whatever you do, don't choose your own face and name because some of the people you talk to want to kill you. Or, at least completely ruin your life so that you will do it yourself. This is not an exaggeration. Rest in peace, Andrew.
2. Your first tweet
Oh good. You decided to stick around.
For the love all that is holy do not tweet using the hashtag #MyFirstTweet. It's very tempting, I know, but as it's your very first tweet, everyone you run across will already know it's your very first ever tweet on account of there being no previous tweets preceding it. The new friends that you make today will use this tweet to let their friends know that you have taken the monumental step of becoming a brand new Twitter user; so do make it snappy and full of wit, let your personality shine. For goodness sake understand that the monsters that want you dead use the search feature and the hashtag #MyFirstTweet to hunt down brand new baby right wing accounts to have them aborted. Much like they screech about needing the "freedom" to do to actual humans in the streets, wearing nothing but pink knit double peak hats and their own undercoat of rapist-repellent blubber.
Yeah. I went there. Bring it.
3. Follow carefully
Despite the disgusting urchins that lurk about bandying their rotund degeneracy on #findom, the mountain of actual pedophiles that will try to convince you they are the good guys, and the entirety of #blacktwitter, Twitter is actually a very friendly place and you are bound to make lots of wholesome friends fast; especially if you have never ever been on the platform before, not even once.
Exercise restraint in your tender first few days and resist following back your new friends too quickly as this will result in a “shadowban" or will prompt Big Brother to underhandedly investigate your phone number under the guise of checking to see if you're human, as if robots can't be programmed to use a phone. I suggest just a few follows per hour- keeping it under 100 for the first day. Apparently, according to Ze Bluebird Gestapo, having like minded friends is the same thing as terrorism and you will be gulaged for it. Yes, I'm mixing up Nazi and Communist metaphors in the same sentence. Don't @ me.
4. Personal Security
You need to download and use a VPN. The animals you will run across will pull cute little stunts, like e-drag you into an argument by calling you completely true things as if they are an insult, and acting as if per capita is a flavor of snow cone only people who hate communism can taste. and then drop a link as if they are proving a point, but in reality is an IP address snatcher which is used to find out who and where you are, instead of just answering the question about why 13% of the population commits over 54% of all violent crime.
Next you will want to turn on the double authentication feature, because as soon as you say something true, some cyber-SJW is going to start jaw-jacking from the monumental sugar rush from powdered donuts and 17 cases of orange flavored Mountain Dew and try to hack your account. In the same vein, make certain your email address is hidden and that you aren't using @YourRealEmailAddress as your handle. For your password, use a ridiculous combination of letters and numbers that have no connection to your actual life- which the hideous banshees and their he-minions are trying to end. Am I hammering that point home enough?
Remember to self care today. And be kind. And always punch Nazis.
— Emma Evans (@TrancewithMe) June 28, 2018
Finally, delete the phone number you used to set up your account. You may need it later and it would be sad if it were already occupied.
5. Get a Thesaurus
I've said it before but it bears repeating; get a thesaurus. Contrary to popular belief, you are in fact allowed to talk about objective biological realities, religion, the various systems of government in the world, criticize certain groups of rootless manipulative cabals of wandering tribal people without getting suspended if you follow three simple rules.
Frame and maintain the conversation.
Use uncommon synonyms.
Subtlety can be volatile.
It goes without saying that a debate isn't won until it changes someone's mind. Minds can't be won if the conversation gets deleted. Since mein feind maintains control of the flow of information via control of the media, what you say on twitter could be the final straw that bends the balance of someone's mind to the right. We want that, we need that, especially as the left gets more unhinged.
Understand that the globo-tech complex is happy to assist in the restriction of speech through the creation of algorithms and databases in which words are input and some alert dings off in some rainbow diversity cheeto cheese powder crusted dungeon sticky with sips drips where some slack eyed Gollum pushes the ban button; and you're suddenly on the other side of a suspension. One such word is “retard” and there are many more. Aside from minority reporting, there are particular words and phrases searched just to report wrong-thinking accounts. A small price to pay to cleanse the universe of criticism that may mean people have to self-reflect and experience personal growth and take responsibility for their lives, the horror.
Take what you want to say, leave off the slurs, play around with synonyms and you can take a blatant violation of ToS and turn it into poetic philosophy. If you're intent on low brow trolling, I don't blame you, but I'll miss you when you're gone.
6. Engaging the Enemy
Never engage a hostile. There I said it, my legal obligations have been met. You cannot blame me for what you do with the following entirely hypothetical thought experiment. This article is satire and not for use by anyone, ever. I warned you.
If have attracted a swarm of busy-body detractors through the use of hashtags, do yourself a solid and check their bio and follower count. If their bio contains and reference to #resist just block them, they are there for one purpose and it's to bait you into a violation of ToS. Similarly, if they have 0 or 1 followers it is a sock account of a #resist account. If they have less than 50 followers they have nothing to say, no one likes them anyway, and they just want your attention.
Doxxxing is officially endorsed by Twitter dot comhttps://t.co/aPr8KZAO65
— These tweets are endorsed by this site. (@EndorsedTweets) June 21, 2018
To engage a hostile blue check mark I recommend to avoid placing your extra-spicy tweet on the thread under their tweet. Instead, drop a teaser; then quote tweet the azure-ticked parasite and drop your main show, curtain call, and encore onto your own wall. Most of the people who sit around deriving sexual pleasure from the fantasy of Nazi scalp-hunting haunt the timelines of these verified whine bags, just waiting for you to show up to report your ‘spouts of hate’. Or, as I like to call them, incontrovertible but inconvenient truths.
7. Types of bans and what to do
You are going to get banned at some point. Deal with it.
Shadowban: this is triggered by following too fast, liking too much, retweeting too often, being too active when new, using too many hashtags, using popular hashtags in multiple tweets, and just for the random inconvenience because you're found to be guilty by association. Your options are to take a break, or power through it. There is some theory that these shadowbans are on timers of 1, 3, 5, 12, and 24 hours and that tweeting resets the timer and extends the discomfort. If you have triggered one you will experience a sudden drop in interaction and may think that your friends are ignoring you. They likely just aren't getting your notifications. If you want to check, DM a friend and ask them to tell you if your notifications are coming through. DO NOT use a shadowban checker website, it's believed that these are run by la resistance, and may put your account at risk; or at least in a database to be watched closely. In any case, shadowbans are usually temporary and you'll be back to normal before you know it. It's worth noting that more shadowbanning occurs during certain news cycles like mass casualty events, terror attacks, and when the President does something noteworthy.
Permanent Shadowban: On rare occasions the shadowban never goes away. I don't know what to do about it but if you have some verifiable information regarding this, please contact me or Republic Standard.
12 hour, 24 hour, and 7 day temporary restrictions: Oooh you bad bad boy! Looks like you broke ToS and had to delete some tweets. You should have followed my advice. Tsk tsk. You can DM your mutual followers, participate in DM groups and you can share tweets from the timeline to the DMs, and block accounts. You cannot like, retweet, or share pictures nor can you follow anyone. There's nothing you can do about this; you're stuck like Chuck, whoever he is. There's no use getting your panties in a twist over it though, it's a good time to get to know your friends a little better one on one and perhaps even explore the possibility of meeting in person. It's an isolating online experience but you do have a little time to reflect on what you can do to refine your technique.
Suspension: Sadly, anything after 7 days and you're gone. Finished. Never to be seen from ever again. No coming back from this, George. It's over. Finito. Buh bye. Later gator. Basically dead. Sayonara. Ciao.
Aren't you glad you remembered to delete your phone number?
8. Opsec
I wish I didn't have to go there, but I have to go there. Even if you have a pure, hate-free, friendly account that never runs the risk of crossing ToS, you still aren't out of the frying pan.
Being right wing has painted a big old target on your back and some of the people aiming arrows at you are going to look a lot like friends, and potential lovers.
Infiltration isn't a new tactic. On anonymous Twitter it's not even particularly hard. Despite the fact that most people who try are hilariously bad at it, some aren't. Despite all the accurate memes about the left being dumb and useless, when it comes to operational security the left is a decade ahead of the right. Whether you agree with the ideas of real-world rallies or not, we have to come to the understanding that social media platforms are not secure places to organize such things. Unite the Right organizers just managed to doxx themselves because they could not get this very simple idea into their skulls. If it isn't on a website you control from the code up and you are operating military grade hardware, it's not even remotely close to secret. Stop thinking that it is.
Hey hey hey time to get doxxed by antifa from using discord YEEEEAAAA BOIIIII https://t.co/zZ3kO54Wmg
— Pikawubz (@pikawubz) May 8, 2018
Don't share your photos, too much detail about your location, or too much detail about your life. If you choose to trust someone, make sure it's mutual. As difficult as it is to imagine loyalties do change. Ideological commitment under certain conditions like bribery, threats of doxxing, or a broken heart, can be overcome. Don't forget that this is an ideological war and the stakes are high.

9. You are not alone
You've made it this far, and this following section truly is the most important part. You have found a warm community of the brightest minds, kindest hearts and most determined people I have ever known to exist. Yeah, we have our in-fights and squabbles; what family doesn't? Helping one another to discover truths that have been hidden from us, fight for a future we want and need, through tough times, and sharing laughter, anger, fears and frustrations bonds us together. If you are ever in a situation where you feel isolated, reach out. If you feel despondent, reach out. If you are being threatened, reach out. We are here for each other. You never have to be alone again.
Happy tweeting. See you in the trenches.

Finding free music is a lot easier than it used to be. No longer is piracy the easiest way. These days, you can find pretty much any song you want using just a few apps. Streaming services pop up and go down every year, but there are a few that have managed to stand out above the rest. Let’s take a look at the best legal free music apps for Android!
Check out more free music apps!
10 best radio apps for Android
There are a virtually endless number of ways to listen to music these days. You can stream them, listen to the radio, watch music videos, and the old methods (like vinyl) are still humming along …
10 best music streaming apps and music streaming services for Android
Music streaming has grown up tremendously since its inception and is now among the best ways to listen to music. Many streaming services let you listen for free, which has helped curb the need for …
Deezer
Price: Free / $9.99 per month / $14.99 per month
Deezer has been around for a while and it’s one of the better free music apps. The free version of the service lets you use Deezer’s FLOW feature to discover new artists and you can listen to playlists and mixes based on your personal taste. It also has lyric fetching, unlimited playlist creation, and mixes based on individual artists. There is a premium version that gives you more features like higher quality audio, offline listening, and Android Auto support if you want that. The only caveat is that the application seems to be a little rough around the edges.
Google Play Music
Price: Free / $9.99 per month
Google Play Music is an increasingly popular option. Its hallmark feature is the ability to upload 50,000 of your own songs for personal streaming. Of the free music apps on this list, this is the best option if you want to combine your current collection with an online service. The free version of Play Music lets you stream your music and listen to various curated playlists. The paid version comes with more perks, but the free version isn’t half bad. The service also now includes podcasts for both free and paid users.
iHeartRadio is one of the most popular free music apps out there. It’s a radio app where you can listen to a variety of stations based on your individual tastes and it also comes with seasonal radio stations and things like podcasts, talk radio, and comedy shows. It also includes AM and FM radio stations that support data streaming and you can even listen to news and sports. It’s a versatile application with a modern, Material Design UI and it comes with the little stuff like Chromecast support, Android Wear support, and Android Auto support.
Jango Radio is kind of a wildcard in the free music apps space. It has a variety of music from both big names and independent artists alike. Unlike most, this service allows independent artists to pay for plays, meaning that you may hears a song that an artist paid to hear. This gives Jango its operating revenue which helps it stay free. There are some potential ethical issues. However, there aren’t any ads on the service and it’s a good way to discover some new stuff.
Pandora
Price: Free / $4.99-$9.99 per month
Pandora Radio is another one of the most popular free music apps. It’s key feature is its simplicity and cross-platform support. You can easily jump right in and listen to music you enjoy on virtually any platform you can think of and your stations sync across all of them. Their content library has grown a lot over the last few years. The experience overall is extremely positive. They also have a full, on-demand streaming service for those who want a Spotify style experience without leaving Pandora. The free stuff still works fine, though.
You’re halfway there! Here are some more fun app lists!
15 best Android apps of 2018
Here it is ladies and gentlemen. The crème de la crème. The Android apps that stand alone at the top of the pantheon. These apps have become ubiquitous with Android and if you’re looking for …
10 best music player apps for Android
A lot of folks these days have transferred to some sort of music streaming service like Pandora, Spotify, Google Play Music, or Apple Music. However, there are those of us left that hang on to …
Slacker Radio
Price: Free / $3.99 per month / $9.99 per month
Slacker Radio is another popular option, although it doesn’t get talked about as much as some other free music apps do. It boasts both free and subscription services that include music, shows, comedy, sports, and all kinds of other content for you to enjoy. Much like Pandora, it has strong cross-platform support and you can choose between creating your own radio stations for quick, easily listening or curated playlists created by Slacker. There is also a $3.99/month plan to remove ads and give you unlimited skips and a second $9.99/month plan to give you on-demand listening and offline playback.
SoundCloud
Price: Free / $9.99 per month
SoundCloud is one of the more unique free music apps because it doesn’t just focus on what’s popular right now. In fact, literally any artist can upload to SoundCloud and that content can be played back by anyone. The service currently boasts 125 million tracks which is more than anyone will ever listen to, ever. It also has a variety of shows, podcasts, and other content to enjoy. The free version is mostly independent artists with the paid version getting you the more popular music by bigger names. Most people who use this for free music are looking for those indie artists anyway so it’s a good option.
Spotify
Price: Free / $9.99 per month
Spotify has been just great for music streaming and it’s among the most popular free music apps ever. It boasts a generous library, curated stations and playlists, and the ability to create your own stations and playlists if you so choose. The free version of the service isn’t as robust as the paid version, but there are still plenty of things to like about Spotify’s free service. The app also comes with some light Material Design, Chromecast support, and the tablet version actually has more features than the mobile version.
TuneIn Radio
Price: Free / $9.99
It’s true that TuneIn Radio is more known for its talk radio, podcast, and comedy radio offerings than it is for its music, but there are still plenty of ways to enjoy free music on TuneIn. It boasts over 100,000 stations in total that covers almost every genre that you can possibly think of and that also includes AM and FM radio stations that can be streamed over data. There isn’t much of a reason to get the premium version for music alone, but it does also offer audiobooks, live sports broadcasting, and more.
YouTube
Price: Free / $9.99 per month
YouTube is probably the world’s most popular free music app. You can find virtually anything you’ve ever heard of. Every band ever has a presence on YouTube. You can also find official music videos, live shows, and even local bands from time to time. You can also make playlists, get recommendations, and a lot more. People can also kill two bird with one stone if you do happened to get YouTube Red because that also comes with a Google Play Music subscription. Even without money, though, this is the free music app worth trying. YouTube may get its own music streaming service sometime in 2018. We’ll let you know if that happens.

Fa La La: The Ultimate Christmas Gift Guide
It’s my favorite time of the year, you guys: It’s officially socially acceptable to listen to Christmas tunes around the clock, plus I have a valid excuse to spend hours scouring the Internet in search of great gift ideas for you to give your loved ones! (I may also have shopped a little lot in the process. Oops.)
Note: Some of these featured products are from our sponsors, while others are affiliate links that will earn me a small commission.
So without further ado, here’s what I’m digging this year:
FOR THE NOMADIC SOUL
Have a friend or family member in your life who is only satisfied when doing something new, exciting and/or unique? (I know a little something about that!) Well, Tinggly has the cure that ails them. I’ve always been a fan of giving experiences instead of mere stuff, and this is the perfect solution: You can gift your loved one a personalized box that contains a voucher to a bucket list kind of item that most people only dream of. Dinner with a NASA astronaut? James Bond sightseeing tour in Thailand? VIP helicopter over the Vegas Strip? Yoga retreat in India? Tango lesson in Buenos Aires? Tinggly has something for every taste. I also love that you can choose your box by theme: birthday, Christmas, wedding, couples and more.
FOR THE SUN BUM
True story: I allot more space in my luggage to sunglasses than I do to anything else, as heaven forbid I be photographed in the same shades over and over again! But I can’t help it: I’m always outside doing something fun, and if there’s one thing fashion-wise that I care about the most it’s what’s on my face. And I love the selection of women’s sunglasses available at Sunglass Warehouse. I’m a huge fan of Aviators—bonus points if they’re mirrored—and Sunglass Warehouse has so many different kinds of Aviators in stock, many available for under $20. (With as much as I change out my shades, I like keeping my cost per item as low as possible.) For those shopping for the holidays, Sunglass Warehouse is offering 40% off one pair of shades from now through Nov. 30 with the code SPENDLESS40.
FOR THE TECH-HEAVY TRAVELER
We’ve all been there before: You’re traveling all day and your iPhone quickly depletes of all power. It’s near impossible to locate an outlet at an airport, and even my backup battery usually dies well before my travel day has ended (a nightmare scenario as I rely on it for ride-sharing when I finally reach my destination). Which is why Lynktec’s Reeljuice 5X Power Bank + 10 Watt Rapid Wall Charger is my new favorite thing; it’s got four feet of retractable charging cord, and it gives me FIVE full charges before it needs to be re-powered. No more fighting my fellow fliers for coveted outlet space at the airport; in fact, I can even charge my phone while I fly. I’m giving one of these bad boys away down at the bottom of the post, but you can also get 25 percent off (site-wide!) with the code LUNATICATLARGE25.
FOR THE SCIENCE GEEK (OR THE TWEEN)
This Lock Pick Beginners Box is at the very top of my DIY-loving husband’s own list, and for good reason: It gives you the tools (literally and figuratively) that you need to learn how to pick locks, with two different sets of practice locks that have clear sides so that the trainee can see what’s going on behind the scenes with the mechanisms. This is the perfect present for a dude—what husband/boyfriend doesn’t love tinkering?—but also would be a fantastic and affordable option for your fidgety, problem-solving tween.
FOR THE PHILANTHROPIST
You guys know my love for St. Jude runs deep. It’s just so cool what they do there: On top of being one of the top research facilities in the world, St. Jude also ensure that its patients don’t have to worry about a thing (like, for example, cost or lodging for the family) other than getting better. I donate to St. Jude periodically throughout the year, but I’m loving their new initiative, This Shirt. All you have to do is sign up to donate $20 to St. Jude monthly, and you get this exclusive Tee that all your favorite country artists (and your favorite blogger!) are wearing. Because helping others is really the reason for the season.
FOR THE ETERNAL STUDENT
Alert, alert, self plug coming! Kristin Sweeting and I are headed to Portugal next July to teach the ultimate writing, photography, marketing and business workshop—and we’d love for you to join us! We’ve extended registrations through Dec. 31 and have a handful of spots left (and a really amazing group attending so far!). Come learn the ropes of the biz with us while surfing, roaming, doing yoga and exploring Lisbon’s charming surrounds with us in your downtime. Bring your significant other or business partner or come solo. Just think of it as continuing education, a tax write-off and a vacation all rolled into one! As a Christmas special, I’m including two one-hour coaching sessions for anyone who signs up by Dec. 15, one by Skype prior to the trip and one in Portugal.
FOR THE AT-HOME COOK
We’re always experimenting in the kitchen, and try to eat as clean (i.e. no processed food) as possible, meaning that adding herbs and spices is clutch for our style of dining. I’ve had a subscription to Raw Spice Bar for the past year, and I love that every three months, a collection of six individually packaged, freshly-ground, seasonal spices arrives in my mailbox and that I don’t have to commit to buying the entire spice jar before I know I like it. You can even customize your diet to Paleo, vegan, vegetarian, healthy or “eat anything” and, of course, buy more from the Raw Spice Bar shop if you like what you tried.
FOR THE HEALTHY DINER
I’m all about collecting cookbooks, even if SVV is technically the chef in our household. My current favorite is A Beautiful Mess Weekday Weekend, which just came out this month and compiles even more healthy, vegetarian recipes than Elsie and Emma post on their blog. If you already own ABM, may I suggest the following: Laura Lea Balanced, Body Love and Cravings (maybe technically not healthy, but who doesn’t want to look like Chrissy Teigen?!).
FOR THE NEW HOMEOWNER
Earlier this year, my interior designer friend Kendall Simmons and her husband Kane launched Salut Home, a thoughtfully curated collection of home goods and accents, and I drool over all their colorful offerings every time the email hits my inbox. My current obsession? Their new collection of Leah Singh pillows (all things Leah Singh, really)—they have 96 styles in stock! And bonus, they’re on sale for Black Friday (use the code LEAH20), or you can sign up for their newsletter and receive a promo code for 10 percent off.
FOR THE SHUTTERBUG
While I’ll never fully replace my DSLR, ever since my mom gave me the Canon G7X Mark II for Christmas last year, it’s replaced my Canon 6D in my purse as my daily camera. It’s still got the manual settings so I can play around with the exposure, but is small and compact and great for videos. (Check out the travel videos I’ve been making for evidence.)
FOR THE BIG KID IN YOUR LIFE
For SVV’s last birthday, I got him a Phantom 4 Pro+ drone, and he loves it. He was a former aviation tech in the Navy and daydreams about flying all the time. Coupled with his penchant for photography, it was the perfect gift (and has come in handy on many a work project for us, too!). I think the P4 Pro is great for someone who does photography professionally; however, if your loved one isn’t that well-versed in drones yet, I recommend a cheaper, lighter model like the DJI Spark as a starter drone.
FOR THE ADVENTURER
I’ve had five different GoPros since I got my first one seven years ago, and the quality has improved significantly. After watching some of my YouTubers film exclusively with the GoPro Hero 6, I’m adding the newest model to my wishlist for our upcoming ski adventures (and it finally comes equipped with an LCD screen, too—you used to have to buy those a la carte).
FOR THE DOG OWNER
I bought a pair of travel pillows from the entrepreneurs behind Doggie Duffel, and I’m intrigued by their latest (fully-funded) project that’s essentially an all-in-one travel kit for your pup. Ella doesn’t have one of these yet, but I think I know what she’ll be finding under the Christmas tree…
FOR THE ART LOVER
I’ve been a long-time fan (turned friend) of Leslee Mitchell’s, and every time her gorgeous photography pops into my feed, I mentally bookmark it for the next time I’m doing a room makeover. I recently snagged several of her toy car prints, and I’m absolutely in love! Any giftee would be lucky to own a series of prints from this talented artist.
FOR THE SPORTY GIRL
Pretty much all my travel apparel comes from Gap Fit or Athleta—after all, I’m a girl who places comfort above style, but with most athleisure, luckily you can have both!—and a few pieces I’m loving this winter are: this metallic sweatshirt, this jersey keyhole top, this pullover hoodie and these black, leopard-print leggings.
!function(d,s,id){var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.location) ? 'http' : 'https';if(!d.getElementById(id)) {e = d.createElement(s);e.id = id;e.src = p + '://' + 'widgets.rewardstyle.com' + '/js/shopthepost.js';d.body.appendChild(e);}if(typeof window.__stp === 'object') if(d.readyState === 'complete') {window.__stp.init();}}(document, 'script', 'shopthepost-script');
JavaScript is currently disabled in this browser. Reactivate it to view this content.
  FOR THE VINTAGE LOVER
Wish you’d grown up in the 70s? (Me, too.) You can embrace a bygone era with this sleek record player in a portable brief case that doubles as a CD player and has USB ports. Bonus: It comes in five different colors!
FOR YOUR FRIEND WHO WORKS FROM HOME
You know that girl who works in her coziest pajamas and barely leaves her computer desk all day long, except to refill her coffee/water/bourbon glass? (AHEM.) Welllll, how much would she love to upgrade from her ratty old PJs to this amazing unicorn onesie? (Really bad, I’ll tell ya!) For one that’s a bit more subtle, Nordstrom currently has this beauty on sale.
Stocking Stuffers Under $50
Savannah Bee Co. body products. I was stoked when I recently spotted Savannah Bee’s entire line, like this body butter, for sale at Target!
Geometric rings. Psst, SVV, looking for something small to get me? Start here.
Paddywax candle. My favorite candles are those that you can reuse the container as tabletop decor after it’s burned out.
Herb mill and grinder. As someone who’s very lazy in the kitchen, I love any tool that does the hard work for me.
S’well bottle. My cousins gave me one of these nifty canteens two years ago, and it’s been a game changer in my travels as I no longer have to abuse the planet by buying bottled water.
Stocking Stuffers Under $20
Taylor Swift’s reputation album. The Old Taylor can’t come to the phone because she’s out there SLAYING it with her new album. Man, this one is going to rack up the awards, and it should be in any music lover’s repertoire of tunes.
Flamingo ornament. I’m a sucker for all things flamingos and also ornaments, and Nordstrom at Home has a whole lot of cute, travel-themed ones, many of which are on sale.
Vintage maps. SVV and I are map lovers to the core. We own more than 30 globes and a number of vintage maps, but those are tough to find, which is why I like this Etsy store, which has both domestic and international city prints.
Monogrammed copper wine stopper. Because who doesn’t want their initial atop their vino?!
Twist Magazine’s winter issue. Launched by my good friend Keryn, this new travel publication is a gorgeous glossy that’s the perfect stuffer for the family traveler.
A taco holder. What taco lover doesn’t need this in their life?!
Stocking Stuffers Under $10
Sheet masks. I’ve been addicted to sheet masking for a year now, and while the TonyMoly variety pack is my go-to order, I’m equally as obsessed with these reindeer and penguin masks from Target.
eos holiday lip balm. I keep an eos in every bag I own, and I just popped this trio of holiday flavors (peppermint mocha, vanilla bean, ginger) into my shopping cart!
A manatee tea infuser. Or if manatees aren’t your thing (you crazy), there’s also a sloth, shark or loch ness monster.
iPhone charging cords in myriad colors. Show of hands if you, like me, are always on the hunt for that missing iPhone/USB/mini-USB cord?
The Oregon Trail Card Came. Because kids these days don’t even know what it’s like to ford a river and then die of dysentery when you’re almost there.
Pop socket. This little doodad changed my life—and made me stop dropping my iPhone altogether. I didn’t know how I’d feel about it, but I love it.
Rare earth magnets. We bought these to tack things to our wall on our four-month RTW cruise, and they’ve been a game-changer on actually keeping all of our cards and photos up on the fridge. They never fall, like, ever.
Since it doesn’t feel like the holidays until I start giving away gifts, I’m giving away one big C&C stocking stuffer grab bag, full of some of my favorite things, including the Lynktec charging station, a selection of Raw Spice Bar spices, and plenty of other stocking stuffers for you to give your family and friends (or keep for yourself—I won’t judge!). The value of this box o’ fun is currently over $300—also brimming with music, beauty items, and other odds and ends I’ve purchased and wanted to share with you—though I’ll likely continue to add to that as I finish my Black Friday shopping.
All you have to do to enter is tell me your favorite holiday tradition. Don’t have one? Tell me what’s the top of your Christmas wishlist! It’s that simple. Leave a comment below, and I’ll randomly choose a winner of this bag o’ fun on Dec. 1.

Valverde: Barca must respond to crisis with wins
Gab Marcotti says Barcelona’s midfield still needs to be figured out, but it’s not time for Barca to panic just yet.
Tumblr media
Craig Burley thinks the January transfer window could be catastrophic for Barcelona.
Tumblr media
Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi each have five Ballons d’Or, but does the Portugal star have an argument to deserving more?
Ernesto Valverde said Barcelona must respond on the pitch this week to emerge from the crisis which has enveloped them since Saturday’s shock defeat to newly promoted Granada.
Barca have made their worst start to a league campaign in 25 years. They have lost two of their five games and are without an away win in four matches in all competitions since the campaign began. They’re eighth in La Liga with seven points.
– ESPN La Liga fantasy: Sign up now! – When does the transfer window reopen?
They host Villarreal on Tuesday and travel to Getafe on Saturday with Valverde under increasing pressure. Sources have told ESPN FC that some of the players have lost confidence in him, although president Josep Maria Bartomeu has no plans to sack him unless results continue to nosedive.
Tumblr media
“This is how things are in the football world,” the Barca coach said in a news conference on Monday. “You are in crisis every three days and you can come out of it just as quick.
“That’s what we have to try and do now. The only way to calm things down is to pick up six points this week.”
Valverde has won back-to-back La Liga titles at Barcelona but his team’s performances in Europe have previously led to doubts about his future at the club.
He survived last season’s humiliating Champions League defeat at Liverpool and the Copa del Rey final reverse against Valencia. It has taken just six games of the new campaign, though, for the debate about his job to be reopened and he said he accepts the discussion is always going to be there.
“Results rule in the world of football and the coach is always in the spotlight,” he added. “That’s the position I am in — and have been from the start.
“Coaches have things on the line in every game, there is nothing new there. In previous seasons, we’ve always been much more consistent and had an advantage over the rest of the teams, but we’ve not started this season well.
“We have to look at this season to see what is going wrong, not last season [when] a lot of the [dropped points] came when we had already won the league. But even last season we had runs like this, when we only picked up two points from nine and we still went on to win the league because we overcame those bad spells.”
Ousmane Dembele is fit again for Tuesday’s visit of Villarreal and returns to the squad, with Carles Perez making way. Teenager Ansu Fati has also been called up for the sixth game running.
Ivan Rakitic, meanwhile, has been dropped, with Carles Alena brought back in.
“If Rakitic is not [in the squad], it is because someone else is,” Valverde responded when asked if there was a problem with the Croatia midfielder, who has started just once this season. “He hasn’t got an issue, it’s a question of players, we have a lot of options in midfield.”

USMNT depth chart: where they’re strong and where they should worry ahead of World Cup 2022
It has been eight months and 13 matches since Gregg Berhalter took over as head coach of the United States men’s national team. He arrived with a mandate to remake a floundering program in his image, a project that’s very much still a work in progress. The manager spent his time handing starts to new players, evaluating the veterans and attempting to find a lineup that gets the most out of the available talent.
As World Cup qualifying approaches next year and the Nations Cup begins in October, it’s time to take a look at where the players stand.
(Note: Each player appears once, even if he could fit into multiple spots.)
Goalkeeper
1. Zack Steffen, Fortuna Dusseldorf (loan) 2. Brad Guzan, Atlanta United FC 3. Sean Johnson, NYCFC
It’s Steffen and then everyone else in the player pool. The Manchester City goalkeeper, on loan at Fortuna Düsseldorf, continues to improve his shot-stopping ability and positioning and is off to a strong start in the Bundesliga. He struggles with distribution, however, and needs to get better in this regard if Berhalter’s build from the back system is going to work.
– U.S. show they’re way behind Mexico – O’Hanlon: Is Dest the USMNT’s next big thing? – Dyer: How a Nobel Prize winner helped Reggie Cannon break through for USMNT
Guzan, Johnson, Ethan Horvath, Jesse Gonzalez and others are capable, if not spectacular, backups.
Left-back
1. Daniel Lovitz, Montreal Impact 2. Tim Ream, Fulham 3. Sergino Dest, Ajax
This position is a perpetual weak spot for the Americans. Lovitz is fine, Ream is better but accident prone, and Dest is just 18. The latter, who was solid and also a teenager against Mexico in his first start, could rocket up this list with a good couple of months for the Dutch giants in the Eredivisie and the Champions League.
Other potential options include Antonee Robinson, oft-injured Greg Garza, U-20 star Chris Gloster and even Fabian Johnson. (Remember when FabJo was the U.S.’s best player at four or five positions?)
The good news: Berhalter has a lot of options. The bad: None of those fully solves his problem.
Left-side center-back
1. John Brooks, VfL Wolfsburg 2. Matt Miazga, Reading FC (loan) 3. Chris Richards, FC Bayern Munich II
Right-side center-back
1. Aaron Long, New York Red Bulls 2. Walker Zimmerman, LAFC 3. Miles Robinson, Atlanta United FC
Can John Brooks stay healthy? If he does, one of the two center-back jobs is his for the next half-decade at least. But the Wolfsburg center-back can’t maintain fitness. For that matter, Miazga is on the shelf with a serious injury. In the immediate moment, Long and Zimmerman are the starters.
Richards, a standout in the U-20 World Cup, is raw but has line-breaking potential. Omar Gonzalez, Tim Parker, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Erik Palmer-Brown, Justen Glad, Miles Robinson, Austin Trusty and a handful of others could figure into the mix as well.
Tumblr media
Right-back
1. DeAndre Yedlin, Newcastle United 2. Reggie Cannon, FC Dallas 3. Nick Lima, San Jose Earthquakes
Yedlin gets the nod due to his experience, though Cannon has had the strongest 12 months of pretty much any player in the U.S. national team picture. In another six months or a year, we might see Cannon lock down the right-back role with Yedlin pushing further up the field, but we’re not there quite yet.
Lima presents a serviceable option in a panic, though it’s not likely to come to that, and Shaq Moore’s a wild card who could push for more chances.
Defensive midfielder
1. Tyler Adams, RB Leipzig 2. Michael Bradley, Toronto FC 3. Wil Trapp, Columbus Crew SC
Has any player in the history of U.S. Soccer moved up the ranks for club and country as quickly as Adams? In two years, he has gone from “who is this kid?” to a Champions League starter. Still just 20, the RB Leipzig midfielder could be the American engine for a decade.
Bradley is still Bradley, the smartest player on the field even if he has slowed down a half-step. Trapp’s the best leader on the team, a guy who could make a roster for that ability alone. Alfredo Morales and Russell Canouse could play roles here too.
Attacking midfielder
1. Weston McKennie, Schalke 04 2. Duane Holmes, Derby County 3. Paxton Pomykal, FC Dallas
Attacking midfielder
1. Sebastian Lletget, LA Galaxy 2. Darlington Nagbe, Atlanta United FC 3. Cristian Roldan, Seattle Sounders FC
Berhalter could go a lot of ways with this group, including installing Pulisic back in midfield, but the McKennie/Lletget combination is the most potent if — and this is a big if — they can stay healthy and learn to play together. Holmes showed excellent promise in limited time, and Pomykal could start pressing sooner rather than later.
Nagbe remains an enigma, notably turning down a recent call-up, and Roldan is fine. Jackson Yueill and Djordje Mihailovic are two younger players who should continue to get shots if they continue to grow as players.
Tumblr media
Pulisic is the undisputed leader of this new-look U.S. men’s team, but the depth around him looks worryingly thin at key positions.
Left wing
1. Christian Pulisic, Chelsea 2. Paul Arriola, D.C. United 3. Tim Weah, Lille
While Pulisic can be considered the best American player at multiple positions, he’s best served out on the wing, where he can get the ball in space and attack defenders. (At least that’s the idea.) Arriola is a much more limited player who nonetheless finds ways to produce in the U.S. coach’s system. (Odds are Berhalter starts him on the right wing.)
Weah, 19, has enough imagination for the entire group but needs to improve his decision-making and impactfulness across an entire match (and get healthy).
Right wing
1. Jordan Morris, Seattle Sounders FC 2. Tyler Boyd, Besiktas 3. Jonathan Lewis, Colorado Rapids
Boyd burst onto the scene at the Gold Cup, demonstrating flair and a cannon for a shot. Yet he hasn’t quite grasped Berhalter’s system, holding the ball for too long. Former wonderboy Morris transformed his game from pacey forward to robust winger, bringing a nuanced understanding to his physical gifts. Lewis might never be more than a spark plug for club or country, but he’s a fun prospect.
Striker
1. Josh Sargent, Werder Bremen 2. Jozy Altidore, Toronto FC 3. Gyasi Zardes, Columbus Crew SC
If Berhalter faced a must-win game, he might choose to start Altidore, who’s very much a known quantity at this point. But Sargent should be the call in upcoming games, as a player with a much higher ceiling whose continued improvement could help transform the U.S. squad. As for Zardes, sure for now, but his days are numbered.
One question for the near future: Can red-hot Minnesota United forward Mason Toye force his way into the conversation, or will he come crashing back down to earth?
