Komorebi to San Myshuno in order pursue her dream of becoming a fashion designer; the colorful styles exhibited by the likes of Diego Lobo and Penny Pizzazz have always inspired her. Aaaaaaaaa, I did it! I actually completed a makeover of a pre-made Sim!! And she turned out great!!!! The only thing I changed is her outfits, her makeup, and her hair; her body, facial structure, eyes, skin tone were untouched! For those curious this is what said pre-made Sim looked like before the makeover. Most of Himari's outfits took a lot of inspo from Japanese fashion styles and trends, thanks to pinterest and tumblr for all the photo references! CC used by Himari will be listed down below!

how’s it going everybody
Boy it sure has been a while! It’s been uhhh about 2 ½ years since my last post here! The truth is that the pandemic made me think a lot about how I was spending a time, and as much as I loved daily Tumblr posts, it was taking more of my time and life than I wanted, and I decided to prioritize other things.
The good news is that I’m still here, just not actively on Tumblr! Last year, I accepted a job as library director at the Video Game History Foundation, where I’m helping save game history as a full-blown professional! Every day I’m working with amazing historical game stuff, and I can’t wait to share it with you.
The Obscuritory blog is still around, although it’s been on hiatus because I’m working on a book about the history of Maxis Software, creators of SimCity and The Sims! Details are still to come, but hopefully it’ll be out next year. I’m following the company from its founding through the release of the original Sims. I hope it’s gonna give people a glimpse what it was like inside the company and the complicated mix of business and creativity that propelled them through the Sim series.
I’m also active on other social media. I’m still at @itstheshadsy on Twitter as long as that site is still operating, but I’m also on cohost and Mastodon. With Twitter’s new instability/slow death spiral, I’m trying to diversify my use of social media, which means maybe I’ll be here more often? Who can say!
But in any event: Hello! I’m still alive!

Their early work was a little too Vaporwave for my taste, but when SimCity 4 came out in ‘03, I think they really came into their own. Commercially and artistically!

The whole project has clear, crisp graphics and a new soundtrack of techno jazz that really gives the game a big boost!

It’s been compared to real life city structuring, but I think Maxis has a far more bitter, cynical sense of urban design.

In 08′, Maxis released this, Spore, their most accomplished game. I think their undisputed masterpiece is “The Creature Creator,” a feature so fun that most people don’t think about its sim features. But they should! Because it’s not just about the pleasures of making beasts and the importance of mouths. It’s also an educational statement about natural selection itself.

I use so, so many mods it's ridiculous, lol, and my game is absolutely crazy I swear, but it's incredibly fun so, oh well!

Now that Early Access is back, albeit in probably a worse state than ever. What’s a “reasonable amount of time” 2 weeks? A month? 3 months? A year? *Eye roll*Who knows how long the early access windows will drag on for.
Which honestly we are a little relieved about because we don’t want to start nitpicking every single creator, we generally do like early access as a concept except for those that abuse it, and we’d like to focus on the worst offenders. But we digress. Creators let’s chat for a bit, because the past few days have been a whole mess but….We do hope this whole fiasco was a bit of a wake up call for creators.
You guys need to be preparing when chaos strikes again. It’s not a matter of if but when TS5 is coming, EA might sell, it’s best to be ready. So please creators don’t end up caught off guard like you did this time.
Let’s starts here; you are not owed access to create content for a corporation’s intellectual property ever and more importantly forever. What you have with EA is a gift. No one believes us when we say this but everyone wants to go on about how greedy EA is but their monetization of UGC guidelines is one of the the fairest in the business. It is incredibly rare for developers to not only allow it, but to encourage it and foster it within their community with collabs, features and integrations within the game. Ofcourse there are games like SL, IMVU and few others but those are the exception not the rule. Even other EA games don’t have it as easy as us. EA could’ve completely permanently revoked early access and modders would’ve had no recourse. That is just how IP law works, mods are derivative works, selling them in any form or fashion is exceedingly generous by legal standards. They don’t have to do this. Y’all have been taking this for granted.
Tomorrow isn’t promised today. How much longer realistically will TS4 last?
If you look at modders throughout the multiple iterations of the game there are very few that stuck with it from franchise to franchise. We aren’t sure as to why, perhaps the modders grew bored, found they didn’t have as much passion for the sequel as they did whatever version they were modding for. Who knows but TS4 creators will likely run into similar roadblocks.
TS5 may not be as lenient, they may not allow creators to set their own pricing, or they have their own version of Patreon that takes a much larger cut. NSFW mods and CC may not be allowed. The franchise may not even make it past TS5. How long with TS5 last? It may be beyond your skill set to mod for, you may not even enjoy playing it or modding for it. Maybe your fans won’t follow you over. Maybe it won’t have your aesthetic. What if it doesn’t support mods? Or atleast the type of mods and CC we are so accustomed to seeing in the game, now that there are rumors of it being multiplayer. If it’s multiplayer what does this mean for mods that include adult content, drugs etc since you might end up playing with a 12 year old?? What if it implodes like Simcity did and a once beloved franchise ceases to exist. What if instead of that help article EA just announced TS5 release for 2023 and people just decided it made no sense to keep paying for TS4 cc.
EA is looking to sell. Will their next owner be as lenient on creators? Will they let creators sell mods at all? EA has overseen this community since the TS1, a new owner may not understand the community and culture of community, The Sims. One of the names that got thrown around early on when word of looking for a seller broker was Nintendo. Do you guys know how litigious and non supportive of mods Nintendo is? This isn’t to scare you guys it’s just to say there are so many different variables to show that how it’s been does not mean it will always be this way.
These are all serious questions creators need to ask themselves, and it’s been smooth sailing, but it doesn’t mean it will always be. As the other day proved the rug can be pulled out from under you at anytime. Contingency plans need to be put in place, it’s time to diversify. It doesn’t mean you have to do anything that will take significant time away from modding, but gain experience in other areas that if tomorrow, you lost all your Patrons or EA got bought by a company with an asshole CEO you had somewhere else to go. Another path you have a few hours a week in that you could dive in full time. An escape hatch. Make sure you have an emergency fund, right now when times are good save money, make a nest egg, lots of apps will do this automatically for you in very small incremental amounts like digit and acorn.
Because relying on a huge corporation’s intellectual property as your sole source of income is asking for heartache. The community might not be as sympathetic in 1-3 years when the modding community is inevitably thrown into disarray by EAs TS5 plans. Because unlike this time you guys had a sneak preview of what was to come. So please look out for yourself because no one else will. At the end of the day not your Patrons and certainly not EA will make sure your rent is paid.
By all means ride the gravy train as long as you can but be prepared if the wheels fall off.

hibiki likes SIM ANT!!!!!!!! tex liking simcity also immediately comes to mind. cain i don’t know but he’s definitely the type to either install a thousand murder mods or just like, remove the pool ladder. teeny just plays whatever mainline sims game with all the expansion packs and so much pretty CC that it makes the computer fan go crazy when she tries to run it and play her crazy intricate super plot-heavy self insert save. i think zinnia would play spore and just make weird shit in the creature creator

My thoughts...
EA has this tendency to make very cringy events, no matter what game they are talking about, it’s always very very corporate and usually some one on a stage telling corny jokes and wasting time with a musical thingy thrown in there while the last like 10 minutes of the event is what people actually were waiting to see. They have not learned from other publishers that people really just want news and trailers. I feel bad for some of the people that were involved in that. Like Kelsey. That’s stuff they should do in between events on their youtube channel.
I don’t really play Sims Freeplay or Mobile so won’t comment on those.
The overwolf thing is...interesting. I wonder if they will let creators monetize on this platform and if so it means EA could be trying to find some way to get some kind of cut from CC creators. We’ll see I guess.
I’ve always wanted the baby lifestage so I am happy that finally we will be getting that. They really didn’t show much else for Sims 4.
Sims 4 and Project Rene? So, a few things here, we’re not exactly sure what Project Rene is, it could very well be Sims 5 or it could be Sims: Whatever, not sure at this point. The title doesn’t actually matter, what matters is if it is a mainline sims game or is it a side project? Seeing as how they have their best talent on it and not some smaller team then I think it’s safe to assume it is a mainline sims game especially since they have started to slow down content for Sims 4.
I can’t have strong opinions on Project Rene, there isn’t much to say about it since all they really showed was that you can edit furniture further (yes like in Paralives) and that there could be a color wheel but it’s important to remember if it is really ‘years’ away then this could be cut or changed, who knows. Also, I hear the fear of mobile but this is pretty common nowadays for a game to have some kind of mobile/device integration. Until they actually announce what they plan with this though I’ll hold my opinions. 
Same for them mentioning that you can play with friends. I don’t think that is a bad thing, it is a bad thing if they try to force you to do it though like SimCity. I think it could be cool to share a save with 3 other people, idea wise, that could be very fun if executed properly. Kind of hard to imagine how this would work but I guess that is their job.
Paralives...I see this coming up a lot and I’ve just been burned by too many crowdfunding games to care until it comes out and it can be played and I was a patreon for it. Too many of these games make big promises and feature creep into basically not coming out. I hate to be harsh but I would not be surprised if Sims...project Rene, came out before Paralives. I hope to be wrong but as a Gamer™ I’ve learned to react to what has been released, and nothing more than that. ESPECIALLY with crowdfunded games.
I’ve learned the best thing to do as a Gamer™   is to just enjoy what is released and to hype up things releasing in 30 days or so. So I’ll forget Project Rene until the next announcement and I’m currently hyping Warhammer 40k Darktide! I played the closed beta and loved it!

The history of the series, its problems, and whether it has a future
Seriously, I feel sorry for those people who play on consoles and can't get a single piece of mods to make this game work. I spent myself so much time on reading forums, looking for answers and finally downloading mods to fix 'minor' problems. As much as I love The Sims with all my heart, despite the fact that I like creative aspects in The Sims 4, I absolutely hate 4th game. At this point 'Project Rene', how they call next game in this series, seems for me as a mockery of Will Wright's priceless legacy.
The Sims expanded the attainments of SimCity. After a century dominated by competitive games, the new series revealed a previously unseen aspect of creation. In The Sims, you don't rely on a developer who has already created the game for you and is now leading you by the hand to the goal. Now you are a creator who puts your own meaning into the game process and sets your own goals to achieve. The genius of the 1st The Sims game is so prominent, that in 2012, alongside with some other games, The Sims became a part of the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The inclusion of games in the museum collection was such an unprecedented case that this event caused considerable controversy both in society and among art critics. At least mention the article by British art critic Jonathan Jones 'Sorry MoMA, video games are not art', in which he contrasts video games with classical works of art in order to deliberately downplay the importance of games.

We did it guys. We proved to snobs that art is not only that which collects dust in the halls of museums, and not those terrible doodles that are sold for horrific sums. I would even say that of all art forms, video games today are almost the only ones that continue the traditional postulates and ideas that art has highlighted for centuries. It continues the eternal question 'what is life', it represents our perception of life in all possible variations, it shows to us what it means to be alive and so on and so on. As they say, 'Art imitates life'. So if you wanna mock your new friend when on your question 'What's your favorite video game' they respond with 'Sims', you better not. Just try yourself any of 1/2/3 game, and on the next day you'll see the world as Diogenes from his barrel. But not The Sims 4.
Does anyone remember what The Sims was about? I think y'all heard that story about Will Right's burned house and how it inspired him on making game about those 'eternal questions'. It perfectly recreates our pursuit of material goods, the desire for recognition and self-affirmation, achieved through social interactions. And what's the most important - the game rewards you with all of these in the end. And guess what? It doesn't have any sense. Any of your goal is a senseless idea, that you created for your own fun. Isn't that how life goes? Well, in The Sims 4 I have only one question all the time:

Sims 4 is not about any of social interactions or achieving wishes. Not only because it's a shallow representation of Right's ideas. But also because they simply don't work. I spend most of the game building something. And in those rare moments when I decide to finally turn to what the game is about, i.e. life simulation, my entire experience is spoiled by lags and bugs. Sims 4 is so lame that it's not even funny. You might say that this is not the worst case in the video game industry. Some video games been turned into gambling, other awful in general. When we still able to 'enjoy' Sims 4, there are games which literally unplayable. But none of the developers has yet been a parasite on the series so much as to squeeze money out of an almost non-working game for more than 8 years. I think that I'm still playing Sims 4 for the same reason as the rest of the players. We believe that one day something going to change and our sims will stop washing dishes in the sink on the 3rd floor. Maybe, it will be better in The Sims 5 and we finally get 'Sims 2 gameplay with Sims 3 possibilities'. But given the current state of things and how far The Sims has deviated from the original design, I strongly doubt it.
The idea of The Sims was so unique, that we haven't seen any other life simulators in these 20 years. EA's greed started drowning the series since Sims 3. Actually, I can't say that change of perspective in the 3d game was really bad. We all adore Sims 3 for its open world and limitless possibilities that turned the game almost into an RPG. Yes, we had less expressive social interactions and the memory system no longer played an important role. But we had a huge world to explore and live in. The problem which started to occur in The Sims 2, slowly started to erode The Sims 3. Game was poorly optimized, with silly amount of RAM to run such a big world. The Sims 4 got the worst from its predecessors, despite the fact that the map was cut. The game, which was designed to be loyal to weak computers, turned into a monster that devours not only the RAM, but also the player's nerves.

And let's not forget how much this 'pleasure' costs. We all chose to play The Sims with this money, but in reality you could buy one or even several works of classical art by some little known 19th century master. I feel myself like Jonathan Jones by writing this. But most of us love The Sims 4 not for what the game is, but for what it could be. I think, The Sims series will never be again what it intended to be.
Oh, and why I even decided to throw it all out. My butler can't wash dishes for whatever reason. Guess I'll abandon the game for next few months.

I played simcity long ago along with the sims 1 and 2 in college. I had children started a few businesses, got a divorce. Just life stuff. A few months ago my 13 year old son discovered he could get the sims 4 on his 11 year old brothers Xbox.

Down the rabbit hole I leapt. It is winter so not much to do but watch YouTube. I started with my old fave pleasant sims because we have similar play styles. I was thinking I might have build wars with my son.

After watching sims 4 videos for like two hours I was over it. I was more interested in the sims 3 open world. I vaguely remembered being excited for its release. But then I got married and had some kids. You know, I got side tracked.
In the beginning:
I played an uberhood in sims 2. I loved how all the playable families got to know each other plus I didn't have to marry too many townies. My goal was to get everyone related by the tenth generation. I made it to six before real life.

Sims 3 seemed so perfect except no open for business, as I loved interacting with the customers, it was my favorite part of the game. Hey I am a home based business owner in real life so it was the best in sims 2 hands down. Granted sims 3 has a less hands on version, which will allow more time to do other things, I think I will love Sims 3 more.

I initially wanted to go back to sims2 but the open world was calling me. Story progression is awesome from what I can see. All the mod creators have outdone themselves. Now I can afford to pay you all. EA is not worthy

So after going back and forth between should I go back to the Sims 2 or should I play The Sims 3 I finally landed on I want the open world in The Sims 3 bugs be damned. Plus of course I haven't had a Windows computer in about 15 years so I just realized that my ultimate collection through origin won't launch anymore and I really don't feel like going through all of that to make it work. Maybe one day long long in the future when I decide that you know, since I paid for that game like six times, I want to play it again.
I have all the files!!! And discs!!!
I'll just play The Sims 3. But I need my uberworld. I have searched high and low on the internet and I have not discovered an Uber world that comprises all of The Sims2 hoods. I found large custom worlds that had all of the terrain that would allow me to have all of the hoods in one place but they didn't actually look the way that I wanted them to. Then I found Tedhi's Tumblr after I looked at one of her YouTube videos and as a construction manager myself, I really enjoyed her architectural style. We have similar ideas on planning builds and worlds. When I saw her new pleasant view video, it was just like she was in my head and added a few things, like her pool I never thought of, that's what I wanted.
Now when it comes to the Sims 2 world and having all of the premade Sims, Pleasant Sims was in my head. I don't think I will have the time to recreate them all but I want a place for all the Sims 3 versions to move to in order to play out their stories.
I took pleasant Sims idea on how the military base is up on the ridge and I was like oh this is perfect that's where I can have strange town, veronaville, and riverblossom hills. You know Verona ville is a mythical town so it would be perfect to have it up there next to strangetown as if the aliens terraformed the area created some test tube Sims and let them grown as they observed them. Riverblossom hills has the bridge that connected to the top of another mountain and I was like oh my goodness Blue water village has that large mountain at the tip of the peninsula that it sets on and my brain just went crazy as the map puzzle pieces fell into place. I was like oh my goodness I could literally have all 7-8 hoods, to some degree, in one place. Obviously I'm not going to make them as big as they were initially meant to be because I don't want to have like 80 billion lots in one Hood but I could have that feel of all of those lots like Tedhi did. she made pleasant view with a couple of extra lots in it but she had the most important ones so I want to have the feel of those neighborhoods like the strange town crater and have it be like arid and desert cuz it's going to be on top of a mountain obviously and then Verona ville is going to be where the fairies live cuz I mean they were honestly fairies in the first place. I don't have any idea what it's going to look like in CAW but right now I think I'm going to have the two Bridges I'm going to have what I'm going to call crater falls coming from strange town crater through veronaville since it has that River and it's going to go past River blossom hills to make the waterfall between the two Bridges.
I was initially going to call it SimCity but then I figured that would be copyrighted so I decided well two Bridges and a waterfall - Twin Bridge Falls.
I did a search online and I haven't found anything that says twin bridge falls so I was like let me put this up here on the internet as public notification of copyright, before somebody comes up with it and then my world will be lost forever to oblivion. This Tumblr is going to document my foray into building Two Bridge Falls for The Sims 3. My Uber world homage to The Sims 2.
