Mission, Vision, and Goals of Silliman University

Silliman University’s Mission statements are:

Infuse into the academic learning the Christian faith anchored on the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Provide an environment where Christian fellowship and relationship can be nurtured and promoted.

Provide opportunities for growth and excellence in every dimension of the classroom

University life in order to strengthen character, competence and faith.

In my years as a Sillimanian (even right now that classes are held online and I am physically not in the campus), I have felt and experienced how the university achieved and catered these goals towards the student body.

to nights we wish will never end

Hey hi tumblr. I’ve been constantly writing and deleting my blog for no apparent reason in the past three years. Of all the platforms in my choice, it is you witness me in both light and dark hours. I had the courage to write again tonight. Remember just this month, I went to delete my old blog (that contains all the devilishly shit writing I have ever written my whole life). I was so consumed of the unexplained feeling in me, bizarre in all levels that it suffocates my being. That was the whole shitty diaryofawishfulbastard has brought me to. Now beginning a new and hopeful for it to last, I will invest myself to optimism and brighter perspective. I mainly created this vlog in synonymous to me embarking on a new life (literally new as a college stud).

It has been a month today that I chose to stay away from my old life, the one that bores the hell out of me. The one that is as monochromatic as black and white. And hey I am for real living a whole new life here in Dumaguete. Like dude, who would have I thought I’d came here? Of all places, to the place where lies end southwest geographically, where I once thought life would be as boring as with my old lifestyle but yow it’s pretty much amazing than I expected it to be. I get to meet a lot of people in diverse culture and personality, such an endearing environment that breathes a warmth of december winter trapped in a sea vibrancy, summer-ish city. People hold high regard to healthy and happy living, no wonder negrenses are called the gentlest people in PH, because man, they really are.

Another thing to be glad about is how God has been truly working wonderfully in manifestation to my life. How he maneuvers each day from since the moment he had blessed me with people and opportunities even when I am so unworthy to receive one. He is just such an amazing father who never tires to love me. So let me share to you, yes, I was granted a scholarship, one that only a few sillimanian students were given and that provides the highest amenities a student can obtain. Yes, it also bears a threatening responsibility each and every semester with a risk of getting terminated from it. But dude, you know what’s great about this challenge? It is that I am gradually learning to trust myself and what I am capable of. I learn to value what God has blessed me and work for it not be taken away from.

First days in Dumaguete are the toughest. Had to wake up earlier than the usual, had to cook not for self but for others you owe one. Had to buy stuffs and take part in the mental conquest of budgeting your finances and actually become thrifty. Had to move from one roof to another, dwell with strange people and flex oneself to each other’s comfort. Believe me, in one month, I had more than a hundred of acquaintances, a quarter became friends, the rest as people just as they existed within the corners of my story. These are some of the overwhelming events that take place in my life. I had to be even tried of my principles (that of my college stands for that I do not) yet I learn to listen and just understand while standing firm to mine. Indeed, its a roller coaster of emotions and ideas that is running back and forth within my system. Some of those that are fluttering and frustrating moments to where when you look back, you realize how awesome that it was meant to happen that way and just that way.

I can even make a whole novel for tonight if I had the will and the skill, but let’s just keep it this way yet. Let’s just say, I am happy to where God has placed me right now. I am happy I’ve made the right decision. I am happy living life this way now. I had to miss friends, home and family, but all these sacrifices are what my endeavors had to suffer for the benefit of strengthening myself in all aspects of it.

Tonight is one of the many nights I wish will never end. My heart is sprouting joy to the rhythm and melody of Charlie Puth’s Change. I am never certain what may come in the days, but I put my rest in the one above that I have let to govern my being in hopes of a purpose - driven life. The breeze of the 12am ambiance enclosed in the lights of the stars and the standing tall acacia trees and the smell of the sea that surrounds the place gives the realization in me that life is a blessing. What we must do is just to keep the gratitude in us and embrace the change that will take place bearing in our minds, all these shall pass and will all point us to our destination, to our better days.

SU to teach financial literacy to fishers in Southern Negros

NEGROS ORIENTAL, Feb. 22 (PIA) -- Silliman University (SU) will conduct a financial education program for fisherfolks in the key marine biodiversity areas covering the coastline of the 13 municipalities and cities in Southern Negros.

It has been noted that fisherfolks have consistently been among the poorest sectors in the country, as they face the harsh impact of typhoon, fish kill, and marine degradation, among others.

With this, the government has partnered with SU, BDO Unibank Inc., and US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Fish Right Program to launch a massive financial education campaign for fishermen.

The financial education program will train fishers on topics such as saving and budgeting, supplementary income sources, and the proper use of micro-loans and micro-insurance.

SU President Dr. Betty Cernol McCann said the financial education program aims to help alleviate poverty among fishing communities and free fishers from the pressure of overfishing, a practice that damages marine ecosystems.

“Striking a balance of alleviating the plight of our fishing communities and restoring the health of our environment aligns with the University’s vision of a leading Christian institution committed to total human development for the well-being of society and environment,” McCann said.

SU is involved in the program because it is an implementing institution of the Fish Right Program in Southern Negros.

The Fish Right Program is a partnership between the Department of Agriculture-Brureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) that aims to improve marine biodiversity and the fisheries sector in three key ecological areas in the Philippines.

With its experience in the fisheries sector, Fish Right Program implementors across the country, including SU, were tapped for the financial education program to reach as many fishing communities as possible.

“Through USAID Fish Right program, we hope to build the capacity of more than 25,000 fishers with the intent to reach even more with the help of our partner NGOs and universities in Calamianes Island Group, South Negros, and Visayan Sea,” said Patrick Wesner, USAID Philippines deputy mission director.

Assistant Prof. Mylah Bomediano, representative of the SU Government Affairs (SUGA) Center in the Technical Working Group (TWG) for the financial education program, said SU is responsible for the rollout of the financial education program in Southern Negros and has contributed to the development of the training modules that will be used in the program.

Bomediano is working in the TWG with Robert Montebon, the economics specialist of the Southern Negros team for the Fish Right Program (SNFR), who leads the implementation of the financial education program in Southern Negros.

“As members in the TWG, (the Southern Negros team for the Fish Right Program and SU) provided input and comments to the financial education modules being developed (and spearheaded by) BSP,” Bomediano added. Among those who contributed to the development of the financial education program module include: Dr. Ben S. Malayang III, principal investigator of the SNFR and former SU president; Clint Alvior and Ed Morano, SU Institute of Environmental and Marine Sciences staff who are also part of the SNFR; Rizza Beronio, representative of USAID and University of Rhode Island in the SNFR; and Atty. Eduisa Diocos and Prof. Ofelia Ragpa, SUGA Center trainers. Bomediano said SU conducted the first field testing of the financial education program modules among potential trainers in Southern Negros, which includes representatives from SUGA Center, BFAR in Negros Oriental, DCCCO Multipurpose Cooperative, and the Negros Oriental Electric Cooperative.

Bomediano served as the principal facilitator in the said event.

The potential trainers from the said organizations in Negros Oriental also contributed to the module development.

DA-BFAR, in a press release, said the training modules are to be based on “5Ms,” which stands for “Maging mapagkalinga sa karagatan; Mag-impok ngayon para sa kinabukasan; Magpalago ng kita sa pamamagitan ng pagne-negosyo; Mag-seguro para protektado; at Maging matalino sa pag-utang (Be protective of the seas; Save now for the future; Grow income through business; Get insurance to be protected; and Be smart when borrowing money)."

The program will establish a system to measure and improve the effectiveness of the training on fishers’ financial behavior.

PATH Foundation Philippines Inc. (PFPI), another implementing partner of the Fish Right Program, is also working with SU on the financial education program. National scientist and renowned Sillimanian Dr. Angel C. Alcala, who is currently the PFPI president, said: “Providing our underserved fishers, especially the women, with knowledge and skills to manage their finances well is so much aligned with our mission of promoting community empowerment and alleviating poverty. We at PFPI believe that no matter how meager fishers’ incomes are, prudent spending and saving decisions could help them achieve financial health, participate more in efforts to conserve our marine resources—their source of livelihood—and be better partners towards attaining sustainable and resilient fisheries.” (jct/PIA7 Negros Oriental with reports from Melita Aguilar of SU-OIP)

Début février

Coucouuuuu,

Petit post pour vous raconter un peu ce que j'ai fait depuis mon voyage à Cebu.

J'ai donc cours la journée et je rentre ensuite à la maison qui, comme vous le savez, se situe juste à 10 minutes de mes classes sur le campus. Je reste donc beaucoup à l'intérieur de l'unif et c'est parfois un peu ennuyant ahahaha. C'est pour cela que pendant les temps de midi et weekends, j'aime me promener dans les rues de la ville ou simplement aller m'asseoir sur un banc du Boulevard pour profiter de la vue que la mer a à offrir.

Concernant les cours, les examens finaux approchent doucement. Dans une de mes classes de math, il ne va pas y avoir d'examen car la prof nous a dit qu'à partir de cette semaine, on allait considérer tous les jours de cours qu'il nous reste comme étant un jour d'examen. C'est à dire que contrairement au début du semestre où c'est elle qui nous apprenait à démontrer des théorèmes, c'est à notre tour maintenant d' expliquer d'autres énoncés devant la classe. Il faut dire que ce n'est pas trop stressant point de vue public puisque nous ne sommes que deux élèves à suivre ce cours ce semestre-ci ahahaha.

Je dois aussi compléter un devoir pour mon cours de basket ball. En regardant un match, on doit se mettre dans la peau de l'arbitre et compléter une fiche en répèrtoriant les fautes commises ou points mis par les équipes qui s'affrontent. Hmmmmmmmm seul petit problème en faiiiit, je connais pas les règles ahahha mais bon je vais trouver une solution car mon but est de quand même savoir jouer correctement !!! 🏀🏀🏀

Abordons maintenant des sujets un peu moins cooool. J'ai perdu mon gsm en prenant le trycicle car je l'avais mis dans ma poche et je n'ai pas remarqué qu'il tombait sniff.😭😭 J'en ai donc un nouveau ahhah, nice oneeee Aurore.

Ensuite ce weekend en enfilant mon T-shirt que j'avais mis à sécher au soleil, j'ai apperçu sur la manche une espèce d'insect encore dans sa crysalyde. Je l'ai vite mise dehors et ne m'en suis pas plus préoccupée. Une demie heure après, mes deux bras et épaules était carrément rouge et ça grattait à en mourir. C'est là que j'ai donc appris l'existence de chenilles très poilues qui grandissent dans les arbres d'acacia à l'approche de la saison chaude. Malheuuur, le campus est remplis en majorité de cet espèce d'arbre ahahha!! Ces chenilles appellées Tilas ici, sont en fait très communes aux Philippines et le corps humain a tendance à réagir très fort au moidre contact avec cette dite petite bêbête. Chelouuuuuuu. On m'a donc dit que j'étais maintenant une vrai Sillimanian car j'avais passer l'épreuve des Tilas!! À peu près tous les étudiants en font en effet l'expérience durant leur parcours ici... 🐛🦋🦋

6 AWESOME THINGS TO DO IN DUMAGUETE

We love everything about Dumaguete— its laidback vibes, its little haunts, the hole-in-the-walls and famed dolphins. Here are a couple of things you can do while visiting the city of gentle people.

Take a stroll at Rizal Boulevard

Dumaguete’s Rizal Boulevard is the definition of chill. Take an early morning or twilight stroll along this strip by the beach and feel the ocean breeze on your face. Good food is always nearby, too, so if you get hungry, you can always grab a bite.

A Foodie’s Heaven

How do we love food in Dumaguete? Let me count the ways. We love gorging on different flavors of silvanas at the famed Sans Rival Café. We love tinkering with the décor at Gabby’s Bistro whilst waiting on their just-as-yummy food. We love lining up for Blue Cheese burgers at KRI. Heck, we even love hanging out at the barbecue stalls at the Boulevard! Everything Duma’s food scene is heavenly.

Explore the Grand Old Silliman University

We don’t know if you can consider Silliman as a “tourist spot” but this university has a special place in the island. Come around in August for its annual week-long, open-house foundation celebration and enjoy strolling around its sprawling grounds. Sillimanian friends would be eager to suggest the many food stalls around the school, including the famed Bossing’s Tempura and their five levels of special sauce. Be wary of sauce #5— we heard it was quite the spice bomb.

Go Chase Waterfalls in Valencia

It seems like every town has their own waterfalls. In Duma they have two— Casaroro Falls and Pulangbato, the latter known for its special red rocks. Their respective treks are infamous for being quite tiring and long, but once you hear the rushing water, it’s the worth the trip.

Take a Side-trip to Bais Dolphins and Manjuyod Sandbar…

Nearby is the Manjuyod sandbar, dubbed as the Maldives of the Philippines. This long stretch of white-sand is best enjoyed in the low-tide. Rent out a boat and catch the awesome sight of dolphins leaping out of the water on your way to the sandbar.

Or See the Sea Turtles at Apo Island

Dumaguete is a good place to start your Apo Island adventure. Located some 30 km off the city proper, Apo Island is the place to be if you want to get your fill of Visayas’ awesome marine life. The best part of the island? Sea turtles! Scores of these friendly sea creatures frequent this volcanic island.
