Earlier this year, I brought you photos and the story of the beloved “Coppertone Cutie” sign in Miami, an icon of that city since 1959. The Coppertone girl was once a sure sign of summer on billboards and locales where suntan lotion was sold, but times have changed and she’s all but vanished from the landscape. Coppertone still uses her in a vestigial way, for its Waterbabies sunscreen, but the dog merely tugs at her now one-piece swimsuit. This Coppertone sign, in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire, is one of only three that I know still exist in the wild. There’s, of course, the one in Miami, and a small one like the one you see here that’s in Long Beach, California, I only recently learned from @signmonger. Are there any more out there that have survived? Please let me know in the comments.
