freudian psychosexual arrested development poll

according to freud, there are five stages of psychosexual development across the lifespan. each stage is focused on a particular erogenous zone (primary source of pleasure for that stage) and presents a challenge or conflict that must be successfully resolved. failure to resolve the conflict at a particular stage can result in fixation which leads to anxiety and neurosis in adulthood

the stages and conflicts are as follows

oral stage (birth-1 yr): primary source of seeking gratification is the mouth, and the conflict involves becoming less dependent on the caregiver

anal stage (1-3 yrs): focused on bowel and bladder control, learning to control your bodily functions in order to gain a sense of autonomy and accomplishment

phallic stage (3-6 yrs): discovering the genitals and increasing awareness of the body. this stage is where a lot of the classic freud complexes can develop (castration anxiety, penis envy, oedipus complex)

latency period (6 yrs-puberty): kids are just chilling until they hit puberty, this is when you are developing the ego/superego and social skills while the other stages are ruled by the id

genital stage (puberty and beyond): maturing sexual interest and development of meaningful relationships

tl;dr if you don't successfully navigate certain life stages you get stuck there and it gives you problems
