also like. edmund as a character. his whole arc in tltwatw is about learning to think, to be thoughtful and kind and respectful when it's needed but not to let go of his independence. to follow orders when they're right instead of rebelling because he can, but to break those same orders when he knows it's time to choose to do what's right. and then in prince caspian, edmund is the big brother. peter is older, pete has more technical authority, but edmund is the one who really understands. edmund kills the witch. edmund believes lucy because he remembers how stupid it is to dismiss her just because he didn't see it too. edmund is king edmund the just because he understands the difference between pride and justice. peter is magnificent, he's strong and powerful and good at getting people to listen to him, but he's prideful and brave more than he is courageous and wise. edmund lost his pride when he betrayed his siblings and never wanted to pick it up again, because pride is what got him in his mess in the first place. and so edmund becomes the voice of reason. edmund stands in peter's shadow and doesn't complain because he knows this is how it's supposed to be. he doesn't need to lead, he just needs to guide.

also don't even get me started on how the only people who defeat the white witch are aslan and edmund. edmund breaks the wand while peter fights somebody else, aslan kills the witch. peter is tempted by the power and edmund shatters the illusion from behind as somebody who's already fallen for her tricks.

Rewatching The Lord of the Rings, I see they tried to solve the problem of the absolute lack of major female characters by giving more screen time to Aragorn's romances which.... doesn't really solve the problem of the women being irrelevant, it just pads out the plot even more... (Though I do appreciate Arwen being the one to take Frodo to Rivendell) Really they should have just made some of the main characters women, but of course that wasn't going to happen in 2000 when the films were made.

Between that and most of the male elves (all except Legolas, really) not being pretty enough (sorry Elrond), I've concluded the optimal solution is to have all the elves be played by women, and for Gimli to actually be a female dwarf, since he did mention that humans can't tell male and female dwarves apart. The rest of the cast is more of a toss-up, I feel like a female Aragorn would be a nice subversion, and which of the hobbits to make female (all but one?) is a question for the ages...

#v thinks #Lord of the Rings #gender #Merry or Pippin would be the safe choice for the only male hobbit but making it either Sam or Frodo would be more interesting #I keep wanting to write Arwen as Arawn (from the Prydain Chronicles) because the names are too similar #the real result of this rewatch of course is probably going to be Frodo/Sam fic #In the meantime I've been writing other stuff and I should start posting again soon!

but the full vod is actually The Green Smile That Haunts Me, which is one of my favorite vods of all time (hi i am an: angelduo enjoyer) and i feel the need to tell everyone to watch this vod again because it has one of the coolest live scene i've ever seen on dsmp. because it's got that whole bit where ctommy is being terrorized by cdream and runs back to the arctic commune after leaving it only to find it covered in blackstone. oh my god that was so cool i still remember flipping out with friends and thinking c!phil had been killed or kidnapped that shit was awesome
