I forgot how weird Civvie's Shogo: Mobile Armor Division video is, like I could totally make an entire out-of-context subtitles post out of it.

Note
Is Armored Core a "mecha" game like Shogo: Mobile Armor Division?
Where you dash around at ludicrous speed like you're not piloting a 200-ton walking tank?
ive never played shogo, but: yes
you have very strong boosters

Halo: Combat Evolved (2001) Retrospective
When I was younger my experiences with shooters were limited. Outside of attempting and failing to clear the first stage of 'Shogo Mobile Armor Division' most of my games were of the platformer or fighting variety. The first shooter that really caught my attention, that made me want to buy a console just to play it was Halo.
During the early aughts I was knee deep into gaming news between a subscription to GamePro and infrequent access to G4Techtv, all singing the praises of Halo 2. It was talked about so much that I felt like I was missing out, that I had to play it for myself. I'd constantly read articles and go to the ilovebees arg site. Unfortunately I lacked an Xbox at the time, I had written off the console before then as none of it's early titles really appealed to me.
There was no way my parents were gonna fork over money for a third console (we already had a PS2 and Gamecube) but I managed to get one put in layaway. However there was one caveat. You see I wanted Halo 2, but my mom noticed it had "language" in the ESRB rating on the back. Halo 1 however did not have a pottymouth so that's what I ended up with. After a few months of allowances and probably my parents just paying the rest anyway, I got my Xbox.
Halo CE's title screen is the definition of iconic. A panning shot of the titular ring and the theme plays, I can't help but let it play for a bit before starting a new playthrough. The story does a good job of letting you know what's going on without over explaining lore details. I love how the games opening level goes out of it's way not to show you any of the covenant before one jumpscares you after opening a door.
I can't say much about the core gameplay aside from shoot gun feel good. It's as simple as that, Bungie nailed the control and feel. There are few pleasures that rival feeling the controller vibrate in your hands as you unload an assault rifle clip into an Elite.
The weapons give you a good selection of options on dealing with enemies. For example the Jackals have a sheild that can deflect bullets. You can either overload their sheild with a charged plasma pistol, lob a grenade at them or just run up and beat them.
The stages start off varied and unique, with my absolute favorite being "the silent cartographer". Unfortunately around the halfway point you can tell the devs were crunched for time. You start seeing the same environments from previous levels popping up and run through the same copy pasted room again and again.
Combat also becomes less varied when the flood are introduced. The parasitic enemy mainly consists of infected who charge towards you and little spores that try to jump you. The game basically locks you into using the shotgun to 1 hit kill the big guys and the assault rifle to pop the spores.
The final stage sees you racing in a warthog against the clock to evacuate before your ship destroys the ring. I still remember the first time I playing, I was extremely tense and struggling hard against the vehicle controls. I was kinda dumb as a kid and didn't usually beat games so I felt really proud of myself as I watched Halo go boom, even if I was playing on easy.
Despite the flaws in the later portions of the game, I was hooked. I was officially a Halo megafan, constantly replaying the campaign and playing multiplayer with my friend and cousin. And ofcourse it only made me want to experience Halo 2 even more. The e3 trailers were included in newer printings of CE and I'd watch them constantly.
Eventually I'd finally get to play it but that's a story for another time. Tl;dr Halo's fucking good.

Sonic R, Blood 2, and Shogo: Mobile Armor Division all came out in 1998.
Blood 2 is a hot mess. Sonic R is an incredible soundtrack paired with a game that is... misguided, and Shogo is... okay, but also kind of a mess.
In 1998, Tenchu: Stealth Assassin released. Tenchu was highly regarded and extremely influential. I tried to play it for the first time a few years back. It does not hold up well. And I'm sorry, but neither does Sonic Adventure.
There are a ton of moderately successful games that were perfectly fine, have some charm, hold a special place in the hearts of their fans, but never saw wider success and probably never will. Gex: Enter the Gecko came out in 1998, and I have heard of people who adore Gex... but there are far less of them then people who don't even know who Gex is (or only know it for the fact that people not knowing who or what Gex is is an important part of one of Scott The Woz's best punchlines). Croc is in a similar boat, although it seems to be a bit better known (also: hi Croc fans. I love you and recognize the importance of Croc. I honor the incredible achievements of Argonaut Software. Please don't hurt me).
Colin McRae Rally is one of the top-grossing videogames in the UK of 1998. It doesn't seem to be a game that a ton of people remember or talk about. Although I'm an American, maybe Colin McRae Rally is still deeply beloved by UK gamers? It just... doesn't seem that way. Most racing games seem to work like sports games, where they get displaced by their sequels and people mostly see no reason to go back to the old ones save for nostalgia except in rare and exceptional cases where the game was amazing or the sequels or spiritual successors really suck. Likewise, one of the top grossing games in Japan that year was a licensed Yugioh game. FIFA 99 and Madden 99 were both very successful, and feel similarly disposable (although I am not a sports game fan, so if someone more knowledgeable comes along and tells me that no actually FIFA and/or Madden 99 is actually the best game in the series, I will have no choice but to believe you).
I am saying all of this to make a point. That point is that middle-of-the-road works, incredibly successful but ultimately disposable releases, and just plain crap exists in every year and probably in every medium (Music? Yes. Books? It's... harder to figure out, release years aren't as emphasized with books).
Why did I pick video games and 1998? Because 1998 is a legendary year in videogames. Widely considered to be one of the best years of all time for videogame releases. And I was not alive in 1998, but looking at the releases it is... very hard to argue with that. Pokemon came to America in 1998. Ocarina of Time released. Metal Gear Solid. F-Zero X. Marvel Vs Capcom. RE2. Street Fighter Alpha 3. Banjo-Kazooie. Spyro. Starcraft. Parasite Eve. Radiant Silvergun. Xenogears. Tekken 3's home release. Panzer Dragoon Saga, Descent: Freespace, Unreal, Symphony of the Night, Rainbow Six, Fallout 2, Grim Fandango, Mario Party, Rogue Squadron, Thief: The Dark Project, Baldur's Gate, Half-Life, and fucking DDR.
That is to say, a definitive classic, a genre defining game, the start of an important series, or two or more of the above in the genres of action-adventure, 2D fighters, 3D fighters, party games, RPGs (Japanese and Western), stealth, horror, platforming, RTS, space combat, FPS (tactical, arena, and narrative-focused), and rhythm games.
So if you talk about how the past was better in a given medium then the present, remember: you're only seeing the best and most popular works. There's a ton of other junk that got buried by time that makes things look better then they are. Even in a year that you can argue really was that good.

Some thoughts on Titanfall 2:
Like many modern shooters, I frequently cannot tell what gun I’m looking at. This is a problem with both the actual model of the guns AND the HUD icons. The guns are just very “yep, that’s a gun” shaped, and the fact you can get the same gun with different sights does not help even though that’s a good game play feature. I’m sure once you’ve been playing Respawn games long enough, you just have all these guns memorized. Can you imagine if they spent time making different guns with the exact same functions at the Titanfall ones for Apex Legends?
That said, once I know what gun I’m holding, the gunplay is really solid and satisfying, and the enemy types are the best spread I’ve seen outside of Halo for a military-conflict themed modern shooter. I’m particularly a fan of the Flatline, though I might just be biased because it’s one of the guns I can recognize easily.
BT’s really cool, as are all the titan loadouts I’ve tried that involve rockets. Basically all the titan stuff kicks ass, probably the best rendition of non-simulationist western mecha combat. Honestly? It might be one of my favorite mecha combat renditions period, everything feels distinctive, and it doesn’t have the issue where some mecha combat ends up just being “what if you could fire four guns at once!?!??!?!??!?!?” BT feels agile and responsive, but the weight of titans is still successfully communicated. It’s a hell of an advancement over Shogo Mobile Armor Division.
In short, Titanfall 2 is already the absolute best mecha action campaign since Assault Suits Valken, and I’m only on the fourth mission.

Shogo: Mobile Armor Division
Shogo: Mobile Armor Division was the fourth game from Monolith Productions, the people behind Blood and Claw, and it is probably the most distinct in a background way sort of thing they ever released. Not the best, not the worst, but very distinct in what it was, that being a whole lot of anime fandom. Where something like Shadow Warrior felt mainly like confused weeb posting in a Duke Nukem 3D framework from some Bruce Lee movie fans, Shogo had its pulse on what anime was from a western weeb perspective nailed down perfectly, including the city night aesthetics, ultra violence, and awkward love triangles. It’s almost enough to make up for the game being very much unfinished.
