A sailor-made scrimshaw model (this is not a POW Bone ship) of a 3-masted packet ship. mid 19th century

The model is constructed of whalebone, whale ivory, baleen and rich tropical hardwood, the keel and bottom of the ship are dark brown wood.

HMS Cornwallis model

This contemporary ship model of HMS Cornwallis is located in the All Hands children's gallery at the National Maritime Museum Greenwich. I missed it the other times I went because I didn't think to look there.

Fitzjames served on the Cornwallis from 1841-1843 during the First Opium War in China. This ship model was made from the same wood that was used for the actual ship and made by the shipbuilder himself in 1813.

Well sh*t. She's the Lagoda of New Bedford, the same girl as the half-scale model at the whaling museum and gifted first to the Gothenburg maritime museum, then joined the whale exhibition at the natural history museum up the hill. One will be glued to that glass for real next time she visits.

Not bad for the first time using oil weathering! Lots of improvement possible, but I am happy with the result.

USS Constitution in Boston, MA celebrated its 226th anniversary yesterday, marking the day October 21st, 1797 as the moment of her launching. Some thirty years ago I produced this one of a kind wood diorama of her crew members -circa the War of 1812. But prior to that she had her first engagement in Tripoli c.1805.
