i sometimes fully forget caramelinda, ruler of candia and the sugar lands, dutchess of meringue, bulbian and devout, is a wizard. she learned magic from the archmage. from her wife. from lazuli. caramelinda, queen of candia, had spells!

she’s very overprotective and worried about her daughters using magic but that’s because lazuli did magic and she’s gone. lazuli was the archmage of house rocks and she’s dead. if magic couldn’t save her, if the hungry one consumes the most powerful wizard candia has ever seen, why would she allow them to tempt fate?

caramelinda is the former wife of the archmage. she doesn’t hate magic because of the bulb. she hates magic because it’s useless and she’s seen that firsthand.

I'm aware the Invincible comic has been around since the early 2000s, but seeing the animated adaptation really puts into perspective how grossly sick I've gotten of recent superhero origin stories and related beginning establishment of their heroic efforts and the people around them.

By the first episode, the main heroes defending Earth had already built reputations and lives. They have people they come home to, already know the routines, have jobs, etc. It's pretty refreshing after so long to just see a superhero show where it's business as usual.

And I get this is a setup so the premise can turn that very idea over our heads, but it also means seeing stuff like the screencaps I posted above.

I'm only in the second episode, but I adore Debbie. Usually a superhero teen who idolizes an older hero (in this case, his father) rarely seem to involve their normal parent(s) except as an afterthought or secondary.

Debbie is front and center to everything going on in her husband's life that she is not only familiar with important government officials, but takes everything Omni-Man/Nolan does in stride because fuck, it's been twenty goddamn years, what hasn't her significant other gotten into? I like that it lends her a unique perspective to give to her son, Mark, and narrative-wise keep her as one of the central protagonist of the shows (this is one of the reasons I really enjoyed Tom Zahler's Love and Capes series for tackling the superhero genre from the perspective of the Normal Human Love Interest.) I know this isn't a Totally New Premise, but I love the casual attitude Debbie just has to all this *waves hand* superheroic shenanigans.

I guess it just kind of feels like "Yes yes, we know you know all the superhero tropes. Let's just cut to the chase." Not completely (Invincible is still a superhero origin story with its main lead), but just the having the story arrange its worldbuilding like that is just neat, is all.

Given the plot twist reveal with Omni-Man, I'm really invested to see how she'll grow and develop as a character.

On a side note, I really, wholeheartedly appreciate another western animated show with a Korean lead. I'm kind of tapped out on superhero media, and admittedly only checked this out because the lead was half-Korean. But well, I'm invested enough to keep going for however long the show will stream. So hey.
