Serial Fraudster: Gaurav Srivastava has been accused, and convicted, of fraud and misrepresentation multiple times in the US.
Convicted to pay USD 80,000 in 2019 and nearly USD 1 million in 2014, over the past few years, Gaurav has repeatedly demonstrated that he is a con artist.
Tumblr media
Gaurav Srivastava, who has built a reputation of an honest and philanthropic businessman related to the CIA, has been revealed as a fraudster by online US legal data. Between 2019 and 2014, Gaurav and several of his family members have faced accusations and convictions multiple times in the US for fraud and misrepresentation, exposing highly questionable intentions behind their business dealings.
In 2019, Gaurav Srivastava was convicted by a Court order to pay USD 80,000 after failing to fulfil a payment obligation of USD 82,088 to the Keck Hospital in Los Angeles for medical services provided to his father, Jaswant Srivastava. Despite having issued checks from his company Veecon Biotech LLC (Delaware, US), Gaurav had later halted the payments. (Case No. 19STCV03981: https://www.lacourt.org/casesummary/ui/casesummary.aspx?casetype=civil)
Below is an excerpt from the legal documents of the Superior Court of California, Los Angeles County.
‘Gaurav Srivastava as the President of the Defendant company provided Plaintiff's Assignor with a check dated 05/24/18 in the amount of $14,850.00 made payable to Keck Medical Center USC and another check dated 05/24/18 in the amount of $67,238.00 made payable to Keck Medical Center USC for a total of $82,088.00 to pay for his father's medical services. Both checks were to be drawn from Defender company. The Defendant's President stopped payment on the checks and the balance remains unpaid’.
Gaurav Srivastava and his brother Pankaj Srivastava were also convicted by a Court order to pay nearly USD 1 million in 2014, when Nixon Peabody LLP (US) initiated legal proceedings against them and their company Veecon Group. They had breached an agreement made in 2013 by failing to honour invoices totalling USD 155,329 for legal services provided by Nixon Peabody LLP. As representatives of Veecon Group, Gaurav and Pankaj Srivastava were held accountable for the outstanding debt to Nixon Peabody LLP and were ordered to pay. (Case No. BC548034: https://www.lacourt.org/casesummary/ui/casesummary.aspx?casetype=civil)
Below is an excerpt from the legal documents of the Superior Court of California, Los Angeles County.
‘In early October 2013, in an effort to obtain Nixon Peabody's forbearance and willingness to continue as counsel, Gaurav Srivastava provided Nixon Peabody a personal check dated October 4, 2013 in the amount of $50,000.00. The check was returned for lack of sufficient funds. Later in October 2013, Gaurav Srivastava promised full payment by October 21, 2013. To date, no such payment, or for that matter, any payment has been received by Nixon Peabody’.
In 2017, Gaurav Srivastava was accused of fraud and breach of contract. Between 2015 and 2016, Veecon Biotech, under Gaurav Srivastava's leadership, entered into agreements with the plaintiffs, falsely claiming they held licenses to market saliva diagnostics technologies and appointing them as sales representatives. Gaurav Srivastava went further, making deceptive statements regarding Dr. David Wong's association with Veecon Biotech. If the plaintiffs withdrew their complaints after reaching settlements in October 2020, the Superior Court of California rejected these settlements, leaving the case unresolved. (Case no. BC648883: https://www.lacourt.org/casesummary/ui/casesummary.aspx?casetype=civil)
In 2019, a certain Patricia Riordan Torrey also initiated a legal case against Gaurav Srivastava, his company Veecon Biotech LLC, and his wife Sharon Srivastava as defendants. However, no additional information regarding the details or progression of the case could be located. Whilst Gaurav Srivastava and his wife Sharon Srivastava accused a certain Jill Small of defamation and of having 'intentionally interfered with a business deal that would have netted Plaintiff (Gaurav and Sharon Srivastava) approximately $40,000,000 in profit, and then tried to extort $500,000', the motion to seal the entire court file was denied in December 2022 because of a lack of specificity. Conman Gaurav Srivastava caught lying to Google over corruption expose
A leading investigative journalism publication has accused Indian businessman Gaurav Kumar Srivastava of lying to Google in order to de-index a story that exposed him as a conman and fraudster who abused the American secret service’s name to defraud a Dutch oil trader.
Project Brazen, which describes itself as the ultimate destination for fearless journalism, published a detailed story revealing how Gaurav Srivastava posed as an operative of Central Investigation Agency (CIA) to run international scams on several successful businessmen, including the Geneva-based Dutch oil trader Niels Troost.
Project Brazen is run by two respected former Wall Street Journal reporters Bradley Hope, a Pulitzer Prize winner, and Tom Wright, a Pulitzer Prize nominee.
It was revealed that Srivastava used a creative lie to complain to Google that the award-winning investigative journalism site had stolen the contents of story on Srivastava from another blog site. By using Google’s copyright policy to his advantage, Srivastava used a fraudulent technique to get the story on himself de-indexed by setting up a fake site and publishing the same content to claim it as his own – and then claimed copyright.
One of the reporters on the investigative story, Soobin Kim, tweeted:
“Our @WhaleHunting_ story was removed from Google's indexes due to copyright complaints. The complaints, saved on @lumendatabase, claim that we copied a backdated blog post, all content of which was lifted from our story. This is how fraudsters curate their online reputation.” https://x.com/soobinskim/status/1722747471888064525?s=20
Project Brazen from its official verified handle revealed the full scale of shocking fraud run on Google by Gaurav Srivastava to remove his expose from Google. In a thread, https://x.com/brazenFM/status/1722563387983351948?s=20 revealed:
“Our @WhaleHunting_  team recently reported on an alleged serial con man named Gaurav Srivastava, who masquerades as a CIA operative to swindle gullible business owners. Less than a month after the story ran, it disappeared from Google’s indexes. Instead, there was a note saying that search results had been removed due to complaints.
“On @lumendatabase, which collects online content removal notices, we found two complaints submitted to Google by someone named Sherrie Hagen, claiming that our story had infringed the copyright of a blog post on Tumblr.
“The post purporting to be the original had republished the text from the public preview of our story on @WhaleHunting_ , word for word. It was backdated to Oct 8th, two days before our date of publication, but the blog’s archive reveals that it was actually posted sometime in Nov.”
This US-based Sherrie Hagen in fact filed four copyright complaints to Google in November 2023, with one even claiming she was based in the UK. The Tumblr blog post that was apparently the original source of this information has now been altered to a completely different story – a move that leaves little trace of reports on Srivastava’s fraudulent activity.
“Our @WhaleHunting_ team reviewed multiple court documents, transcripts, correspondences and more to report and write this story, which the blog claims as its own in the complaints submitted to @Google to get it de-indexed. It even lifted the image made by @ProjectBrazen’s creative director – a photo of Gaurav Srivastava with swords in the background, inspired by the ceremonial swords he pretends to have received from various heads of state, when he actually bought them for himself.”
“When you google “Gaurav Srivastava”, you can only find fawning articles that he likely paid for calling him a “philanthropist” and a “loving parent.” This is a glaring example of how copyright laws are abused to launder the reputations of fraudsters, and bury damning information.”
In January 2023 Srivastava and his wife Sharon were the subjects of a flurry of articles that appeared on websites like LA Weekly and The Ritz Herald. Despite their heritage-sounding names, these sites are little more than content mills for paid promotions. The articles had vapid titles, including “Five Ways to Get Involved in the Local Los Angeles Community” and “6 Lessons to Teach Your Kids Gratitude”, which is often a sign of a search-engine optimisation (SEO) program used to manage – or manipulate – the subject’s online profile.

here’s my attempt at trying to figure out who’s playing who in the rwrb movie
bc for some reason they’ve turned this into a puzzle 😭
Clifton Collins Jr - Oscar Diaz
he’s giving major oscar energy and im pretty sure he posted something about playing opposite uma thurman which we know is confirmed to be playing ellen.
Stephen Fry - Jeffrey Richards
bro i dunno about this. that was my immediate gut reaction but i’ve seen some people say they’ve changed the queen into a king so maybe he’s the king of england?? i dunno im still manifesting a maggie smith queen of england.
Sarah Shahi - June Claremont-Diaz or Zahra Bankston
until the casting announcement that was made yesterday i was feeling pretty confident that she was zahra. however. if Sharon Clark is zahra, then I think sarah is june as im not sure who else she could be. i know a LOT of people don’t want her to be june as she’s an older actress but honestly i would rather her be june than no june at all. but i refuse to believe they’ve written her character out, she plays too big a role in alex and henry’s story. i also do not think sarah looks 40 at all and was surprised to find out her age when i looked it up, if she acts the part well i dont really care if shes 41. i watched 30 year olds play 17 year olds in glee and cory monteith as finn hudson remains one of my favorites to this day.
Ellie Bamber - Bea
she’s just gotta be i mean look at her. before casey confirmed rachel hilson was nora i thought maybe possibly rachel was june and ellie was nora but alas. i hope ellie knows how to play god save the queen on electric guitar.
Aneesh Sheth - Amy Chang
amy is canonically trans in the book and so is aneesh, which is what leads me to believe she’s amy. i’m also so sad i wasn’t familiar with her work sooner as based off everything she’s posted on instagram she seems like an absolutely incredible human being. super excited to see her in this movie no matter who she is.
Polo Morín - Rafael Luna
if that man is not luna i dunno who else he could be as he is pretty much exactly how i would picture luna looking. maybe cash???? but he seems way more like a luna.
Ahmed Elhaj - Pez Okanjo
didnt he make his instagram profile picture a pez dispenser shortly after the casting announcement?? like i swear that was a thing that happened. its not anymore but it definitely happened.
Akshay Khanna - Shaan Srivastava
akshay is an indian actor and shaan is canonically indian, so this seems like the logical conclusion to come to but i could be wrong. its happened before.
Sharon D Clark - Zahra Bankston
as i said earlier with sarah, if sarah isn’t zahra sharon is. and i think it would make more sense for sharon to be zahra bc isnt zahra canonically african american?? she also matches more closely to what i envisioned the character looking like. however i also know the world doesn’t revolve around me so sometimes it doesn’t matter what i think
Malcolm Atobrah - ??? Cash…maybe ???
similar to stephen fry, i have absolutely no idea who this man is playing. if ahmed wasn’t already cast i would be inclined to say pez. someone suggested maybe he’s spencer which i could see.
Thomas Flynn - Philip or Liam
i know the actor is british, which makes me inclined to say philip…but i also feel like he’s too good looking to be philip. or maybe alex described him as not-so-attractive out of bias 🤷‍♀️ he could always put on an american accent and be liam, or maybe they’ll tell us we’re all wrong and he’s WASPy hunter
please feel free to reply with any theories or ideas you have! make sure to stay kind and respectful to the actors and all involved, this has never and will never be a safe place for people to shit on the actors involved as they are people too <3
(please note if i reply to your comment itll be from my main account slutforbroadway as i use mobile and have not figured out how / if i can reply to comments from this account)

Dirt on Gaurav Srivastava aired in public as Tumblr shuts fraudulent blogs
Microblogging and social networking website Tumblr has confirmed that it has removed several accounts and posts from its platform after its site was abused by Indian businessman Gaurav Srivastava.
The Indian businessman used Tumblr’s backdating function to create posts that appeared to be from an earlier date, then used these posts as the basis for copyright claim to manipulate Google results for his name.
Tumblr said that the blogs and their posts were removed “for violating community guidelines” after they were used in an attempt to remove factual stories about the businessman, who abused the name of American secret service Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to defraud a Dutch oil trader. The complex, international fraud carried out by Srivastava is the subject of increasing media interest after other allegations about Srivastava’s history of fraud came to light.
According to an investigation, Tumblr accounts linked to Gaurav Srivastava lied to Google to get two articles de-indexed and removed from Google’s search results by claiming that the original investigative stories were published on Tumblr and not on the journalistic platforms.
According to legal complaint repository the Lumen Database, complaints were made to Google citing the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). The complaints claimed that the stories exposing the fraud and deceit of Gaurav Srivastava on how he cheated a Dutch oil trader were a copyright violation of the stories published on Tumblr site.
Gaurav Srivastava has a well-known history of using false copyright claims to shut down fact-based coverage of his malicious activities. After critical coverage is published, he copies the work to a new anonymous blog with no post history (often on sites like Tumblr or Medium), backdates the post, and files a complaint to Google under DMCA.
The parent company of Tumblr, Automattic, confirmed in a statement their assessment that the blogs were set up to raise fake DMCA claims – by people linked to Gaurav Srivastava – and have been “removed from Tumblr for violating our Community Guidelines”.
The statement added: “Tumblr and Automattic take legitimate copyright protection very seriously. We take great care to protect our users from fraudulent or otherwise invalid takedown notices, and similarly we have a zero-tolerance policy for blogs using our services to abuse the DMCA.”
Gaurav Srivastava first targeted Project Brazen, a US-based investigative journalism outlet run by Pulitzer Prize-winning authors Bradley Hope and Tom Wright, in their original story about him, which contained their own original research and interviews. (https://whalehunting.projectbrazen.com/the-old-im-a-secret-spy-con/, https://twitter.com/brazenFM/status/1722563387983351948 and https://www.gripeo.com/gaurav-and-sharon-srivastava-family-foundation/)
Tumblr also confirmed that it had deleted the post published on its site used to raise a malicious claim against the Project Brazen investigation into Gaurav Srivastava’s fraud. Tumblr said: “Our team has reviewed earlybirdtimes.tumblr.com. This blog has also been removed from Tumblr for violating our Community Guidelines. Both Tumblr and Automattic take copyright protection very seriously. We will continue to manually investigate any reports of Tumblr blogs being used to publish content that is mentioned in these fraudulent takedown notices.”
Former Wall Street Journal reporters Bradley Hope, a Pulitzer Prize winner, and Tom Wright, a Pulitzer Prize nominee, revealed that Srivastava used a creative lie to complain to Google that the award-winning investigative journalism site had stolen the contents of story on Srivastava from another blog. By using Google’s copyright policy to his advantage, Srivastava used a fraudulent technique to get the story on himself de-indexed by setting up a fake Tumblr account and publishing the same content to claim it as his own – and then claimed copyright.

Another investigation published by a Pakistani paper was targeted on 24 December 2023. The Tumblr platform was used to publish the same story in the first week of January 2024 and then backdated, before Srivastava raised a claim to Google using US DMCA legislation to get the story taken down. According to Tumblr archives, the false report was made in January 2024 after uploading it in first week of January 2024 and the same post was removed from Tumblr site two days after the Daily Pakistan story was taken down – a clear case of how the Tumblr platform was manipulated.
According to the US laws, in order to make a DMCA notice the individual makes a legal commitment to tell the truth, which means that lying to secure a DMCA is effectively perjury and punishable by imprisonment and a fine.

How fake CIA agent Gaurav Srivastava tried to con his way to control a company
Gaurav Kumar Srivastava, an Asian businessman living in America, has been accused of orchestrating international scams in which he claimed to be a Central Investigation Agency (CIA) operative to defraud global businessmen, including the Geneva-based Dutch oil trader Niels Troost.
An investigation published in respected investigative journalism forum “Project Brazen” has laid bare the full extent of how Srivastava conned the Dutch oil trader, leading to a legal battle. The elaborate web of lies has been exposed at the “Project Brazen” by the Pulitzer Prize-winning former Wall Street Journal reporter Bradley Hope and Scobin Kim.
According to the available evidence, Gaurav Srivastava met Troost in summer 2022 at the G20 summit in Bali that November. The Atlantic Council hosted the event sponsored with more than $1 million by the Gaurav & Sharon Srivastava Foundation, the non-profit NGO run by Srivastava with his wife Sharon Srivastava (née Johnson) in the name of ‘securing food & energy for America and the world’.  Troost and Srivastava joined a panel of experts to discuss global food security, and the Atlantic Council’s President Frederick Kempe profusely thanked Srivastava for his generous donation but he had no idea what would happen in the following months.
According to the Project Brazen investigation, Niels Troost was introduced in summer 2022 by a mutual contact to Gaurav Kumar Srivastava, who pretended to be very well connected with the Washington power circles and also to the country’s main spy agency – the CIA. At that time, the oil trader was in a state of growing panic as someone purporting to be a US government informant had falsely led him to believe that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was investigating him and his commodities-trading company headquartered in Switzerland, Paramount Energy & Commodities SA. Months into Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Paramount was continuing to trade Russian oil, mainly crude, in full compliance with the law, shipping from a port near Vladivostok. At the time, the G-7 was actively considering a price cap on Russian oil, with the US as its biggest supporter.
Troost asked Gaurav Srivastava for help. Srivastava assured him that he will deal with the FBI and led Troost to believe he was a "non-official cover" or NOC (pronounced “knock”) for the CIA and operated at the senior level amongst a total of 30 NOCs around the world. Srivastava put forth a dubious proposition: if Troost could make Srivastava a partner in the business, by moving 50% of the shares of Paramount to a Delaware-incorporated company controlled by Srivastava, and domicile Paramount into the US, Troost would quietly be excused from future sanctions on Russia, because he would then be part of a state-approved network to collect intelligence on behalf of the US. Srivastava stipulated that the transfer must take place through US law firm Baker & Hostetler.
According to the investigation, Srivastava lied to Troost that he was involved in top-secret counter-terrorism missions, including several in Afghanistan, and that in 2008 he was held hostage by ISIS in the Democratic Republic of Congo – despite there being no evidence of ISIS in the DRC at the time.
According to a transcript of their meeting, Srivastava, who was born in Lucknow in Northern India and now appears to reside in Los Angeles with his wife Sharon, told Troost that it was through his work as a CIA agent that he was able to make high-level contacts in Congress and the State Department and that these contacts would allow Troost to continue doing business in Russia after the invasion of Ukraine with a special license from the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), provided that he agreed to Srivastava’s conditions.
According to the legal papers, Troost engaged Baker & Hostetler as Paramount's counsel in November 2022. He was not, however, made aware that Jeffrey Berg, a partner at firm, and Srivastava were business partners in a South African company called Himmelhoch Petroleum and Gas.
Legal papers show that within a year, Troost had transferred 50% of the shares to Srivastava but had yet to complete the US domiciling of Paramount due to rising doubts about Srivastava's bona fides. Srivastava made tall claims about his CIA and FBI connections but was unable to show any evidence of his influence, making Troost increasingly uneasy.
When Srivastava realised that Troost was having doubts and delaying, he turned hostile towards the oil trader and told him he must hurry with the US domiciling or else he can forget about any favors. In an aggressively worded text message to Troost, he wrote: “Stop with games & tell you staff too or as a shareholder I want to block the funds of the company. I told you not BS me. I am really done Niels.”
Gaurav Kumar Srivastava ramped up his name-dropping as well, telling Troost that he had weathered a profane outburst from the Director of the CIA, William J. Burns, because Troost was dragging his feet over this particular transaction.
According to legal papers, it was in April 2023 that Troost hired investigators to perform due diligence on Srivastava and discovered a chilling history of fraud suits and unpaid bills: in 2017, a Colombian businessman sued Srivastava for sales of unlicensed medical devices; in 2019, a hospital sued Srivastava for stopping payments on checks paid for medical bills; in the same year, a woman in Los Angeles sued Srivastava and his wife for failing to repay a loan of $100,000; Srivastava counter-sued her for slander when she sent a message to Srivastava's potential business partner calling him "a thief and a con artist," whereupon the potential business partner withdrew from a multi-million-dollar business deal.
Seeing the intelligence reports of Srivastava’s alleged fraud, Troost realized that Srivastava had no connections with the CIA and that he was only a huckster who cobbled together false stories to feign an air of importance, exclusivity and impunity. His true intention, Troost came to believe, was to make off with Paramount once it was domiciled into the US, adding to a portfolio of pilfered companies.
According to evidence, the whole fraud scheme broke down on May 10, 2023, when Troost terminated Paramount's relationship with Baker & Hostetler and rescinded Srivastava's shares on the grounds of error and deceit, restoring Paramount to his full control. When Srivastava realized his shares had vanished, he fired off an angry text message to Troost.
Throughout the next few days, Troost and his family were terrorized with a series of threatening calls and texts from unknown numbers, according to evidence. One unknown Iranian number threatened to release an "un-blurred confession video" of Troost, if he didn't wire $10 million in 48 hours. Troost's daughter received another text from someone with a California area code, claiming to be a Wall Street Journal reporter writing a story about her father's ties to a prominent Russian individual. Three days after cutting off contact, Troost received another text from Srivastava, this time with a hint of desperation: "We need to talk. Really."
When Troost refused to respond, Srivastava and his attorney Berg met with the ambassador of Turkey to the US to attempt to derail Troost's business arrangements to invest in a terminal in the country. Berg wrote a letter to the Swiss ambassador to the US and the US ambassador to Switzerland, levelling false and increasingly wild allegations about Troost’s business in the hope that Paramount would come under official scrutiny.
This matter is subject to ongoing legal action where Gaurav Srivastava has been described as a serial conman and fraud. The cases are set to reveal more scandalous material in coming months.

Fake CIA's Spy: Conman Gaurav Srivastava exposed after $1 million donation to Atlantic Council
a purported philanthropist, Gaurav Srivastava, who generously funded a conference on global food security organized by the Atlantic Council, is now under scrutiny for alleged fraudulent activities. Srivastava, a 32-year-old sponsor, donated over $1 million to the think tank in 2022.
The unraveling of Srivastava's alleged deceit began when he approached Dutch oil trader Niels Troost with a dubious proposition. Claiming to be a government operative with deep ties in Washington, Srivastava suggested that if Troost made him a partner in his commodities-trading company, Paramount Energy & Commodities SA, and relocated its shares to a Delaware-incorporated company controlled by Srivastava, Troost could potentially escape sanctions on trading Russian oil.
To bolster his credibility, Srivastava spun elaborate tales of being a "non-official cover" (NOC) for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). He regaled Troost with fabricated stories of counter-terrorism missions and hostage situations, even asserting that figures like Warren Buffett and Elon Musk were part of the same NOC network.
Srivastava strategically surrounded Troost with seemingly credible individuals who furthered his false narratives. He recommended hiring the law firm Baker & Hostetler, insinuating its close ties to the government. One of the firm's partners, Jeffrey Berg, allegedly reinforced Srivastava's claims of influential connections.
As Troost grew wary and initiated due diligence in April 2023, investigators uncovered a history of (alleged) corporate fraud suits and unpaid bills against Srivastava. Legal battles from 2017 to 2019, involving unlicensed medical devices, unpaid medical bills, and a failed multi-million-dollar business deal, painted a troubling picture of Srivastava's business practices.
Srivastava's seemingly low-profile life in Los Angeles with his wife, Sharon Srivastava, also co-founder of their foundation, contrasts with the questionable online presence of their philanthropic efforts. The unraveling of this alleged con raises questions about the authenticity of Srivastava's connections and the motives behind his significant

The positive changes facilitated by their commitment to the cause have brought progress towards a world where basic necessities are accessible to all. Gaurav Srivastava's efforts go beyond research and development, and their foundation has played an essential role in securing reliable food supplies around the globe.
Gaurav Srivastava understands that access to food is still a significant challenge, and there are several factors that hinder achieving food security. Poor infrastructure in remote areas is one of the main challenges, as it makes it difficult to produce, transport and distribute food. Climate change poses another significant threat, as it disrupts crop cultivation, leading to food shortages and price-hike. Adding to the problem is economic inequality, political instability, and conflicts, which can impact food security, particularly in developing nations. The situation calls for an urgent need to build a sustainable and inclusive food system that can ensure access to healthy and nutritious food for all. A collective effort from governments, communities, and individuals can help address these challenges, which will curb food insecurity and ensure that no one goes hungry. By doing so, we can create a world where everyone has access to adequate meals, irrespective of their geographic location or economic status.

ANKARA, Turkey Last week, the mayor of Ankara escorted me and about a dozen other journalists into a windowless room with rows of green velvet armchairs facing a flat-screen televisionand told us his theory about ISIS.
Reporters from a bevy of major outlets, including the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and Associated Press, had traveled to Ankara to interview Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and other high-ranking government officials. But the mayor, an energetic, mustachioed man named Melih Gokcek, had a different idea.
ISIS is an artificial organization, a fake organization, just like President Trump says, Gokcek told journalists from 11 major Western news outlets through an interpreter. ISIS is actually the successor organization of al Qaeda in Iraq. But Trump didnt say it just once, he repeated it three times, Gokcek said. So three times I believe it has some truth in it.
It was around this time that I realized we definitely werent going to meet Erdogan.
The other reporters and I had traveled to Ankara to hear the Turkish governments side of a complicated story. Turkey, a NATO member, is one of Americas most important Muslim allies in the Middle East. But relations have soured recently in part because Turkish government officials are angry that the U.S. hasnt extradited Fethullah Gulen, the cleric they accuse of plotting a failed coup in July.
Selahattin Sevi/Zaman Daily/Reuters
Fethullah Gulen, a cleric living in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania who is accused by Ankara of plotting the failed coup in Turkey last year.
Turkish officials are adamant that Gulen, now living in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania, is to blame for the coup. But they have failed to offer hard evidence.
Erdogan rarely makes himself available to the media especially for foreign reporters who are freer than Turkish journalists to criticize his government. So when Adam Sharon, a Washington-based public relations executive, contacted me and several other reporters last month and offered interviews with Erdogan and other top Turkish officials, it held out a chance, however remote, for American reporters to assess face-to-face whether top Turkish officials had any evidence for their claims about Gulen.
If the goal of the trip was to convince reporters that the Turkish governments case against Gulen was based on facts, rather than innuendo and conspiracy theories, it backfired spectacularly.
Gokcek, who has been the mayor of Ankara for nearly 23 years, offered to arrange the meetings, and his team did everything they could to entice reporters to make the trip. They provided an invitation letter proposing to arrange meetings with Erdogan, the prime minister, the foreign affairs minister, the chief of general staff to the military, and the chief of national intelligence. They later followed up with a detailed itinerary. They offered to cover the cost of airfare, room and board, and meals. (The Huffington Post paid my expenses.)
Onur Erim, the mayors chief adviser, enlisted in the help of Arda Sayiner, an Istanbul-based public relations expert. Sayiner brought on Sharon, who was paid $20,000 for his work setting up the trip. Sayiner received very very very little, he said, declining to say how much.
Gokcek met us at a compound he uses to entertain guests on the first evening of our two-day trip in the capital city. He had a single red rose for each of the female reporters in honor of International Womens Day. The mayor said he was excited to show us never-before-seen footage of the failed July 15 coup. The video was so gory that women might not be able to watch, his chief adviser warned during lunch.
The reporters were growing restless. Our hosts had dropped Turkeys intel chief from the itinerary and replaced him with the justice minister. Our appointment with the justice minister kept getting pushed back so he could assemble better evidence against Gulen, Sayiner told us a claim that seemed questionable, at best. And sources in the offices of the presidents and prime minister told our Turkey-based colleagues that we werent on those officials schedules.
The day was nearly over, and with the exception of a morning interview with Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Simsek, we had spent much of it touring Mustafa Kemal Ataturks mausoleum and a revitalized former slum in Ankara. We also saw Parliament buildings that had been damaged during the coup. The destruction was being preserved for future generations to see, our parliamentary guide, Sami Akgun, said. He showed us a bombed-out portion of the Grand National Assembly and a hole in the ground in front of it. The depression used to be deeper, Akgun said, but the rain and snow during the eight months since the attack had partially filled it in.

A hole in the ground in front of Turkey’s Parliament building that was created during the July 2016 coup attempt.
When we asked for updates about our interviews, Sayiner assured us they would still happen, but he didnt say when.
Gocek led us downstairs to the room with the green velvet armchairs and the TV. There was a dessert platter set out next to every chair. The 24-minute video was as bloody as promised. The mayor, seated next to the screen, provided running commentary. At one point, he told us that he had appeared on television 18 times on the night of the failed coup. After the video, he told us his theory about former President Barack Obama and 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton creating ISIS. Mehul Srivastava, a Financial Times reporter based in Istanbul who is familiar with Gokceks style, wanted to make sure the other journalists fully understood what they were dealing with.
Could you perhaps explain to us your theory on earthquakes? Srivastava asked the mayor.
Surely, I would be happy to answer that, Gokcek said. There are two types of earthquakes in Turkey. The ordinary ones that happen spontaneously, the other ones that are triggered. According to Gokcek, the U.S. and Israel had collaborated to trigger a 7.4-magnitude earthquake in the Gulf by sailing up to a coastal fault line and attempting to extract energy. They couldnt manage it, just like an atom bomb, the energy inside the ground exploded and it turned into an earthquake, he said. Theres no evidence of such an occurrence. The mayor has also suggested that Gulen and his followers created an earthquake with the goal of destabilizing Turkey.
Gokcek said he gets his information from the Internet. I have the largest intelligence service in the world: Google, the mayor said. You can find anything in Google. In Turkey, I am the person who uses Google the best way I would like to thank Google.
Sharon, the Washington-based PR hand, started breathing heavily.
Adem Altan/Getty Images
Mayor of Ankara Melih Gokcek told reporters he believes former President Barack Obama created ISIS, the U.S. and Israel are responsible for earthquakes, and Google is a suitable substitute for intelligence briefings.
We interviewed Yildirim, the prime minister, the next day.
At the end of the hourlong meeting, The New York Times Gardiner Harris thanked Yildirim for his time and asked if he was aware that we also had been promised interviews with Erdogan and other top government officials.
The prime minister looked surprised. He had only been asked to meet with us two days ago, he said.
Ultimately, we heard from Simsek, Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag, and Erdogans spokesman, Ibrahim Kalin. The meeting with the justice minister, Sayiner told us, was the hastily arranged result of a request from Prime Minister Yildirims office.
The Turkish officials said what wed expected them to say. They defended Turkeys post-coup crackdown and said they had been unfairly judged and abandoned by the U.S. in the wake of the violent attempt to overthrow their democratically elected government.
Many of their grievances were understandable: The Syrian Kurds that are armed and trained by the U.S. to fight against ISIS have ties to the PKK a group accused of several attacks against Turkish troops, including a suicide bombing last year that killed 11 police officers. They argued that Washington should take them at their word when it comes to Gulen. When former President George W. Bush said Osama bin Laden was behind the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, We didnt say show us smoking guns, Simsek said. We sent our Turkish army to Afghanistan to fight.
All of those arguments would have seemed more compelling coming from Erdogan himself in a setting where reporters could question him directly. Instead, we heard from the presidents subordinates and a conspiracy theorist who claims Obama literally created ISIS.
It felt just like home.
