so ive been watching shangri-la frontier lately - because its amazing - and ive been watching both the dub and the sub. mostly because i usually watch anime dubbed, but ive been so into the story that ive been watching the subs to stay on top of it
and oh boy oh my god. ive seen people talking about how good the show is, and how much sunraku sounds like a japanese gaming youtuber n stuff. but no one has been talking about how much work the dub has been putting in??? sunraku has been saying so much streamer slang that i double over laughing rewatching. "poggers" "suh dude" "f in the chat" dude im going feral over this show i love this so much

UPDATE! Lore, Exploration, & Learning from Anime
A little ways back, I wrote a piece on the use of lore for world building. It was inspired by some stuff I was seeing in anime and was generally well received. Well, I just caught up with Shangri-La Frontier, and DAMN is this show hitting home. Time for an update to that article, let’s dive in!
CAUTION! Mild Spoilers for Shangri-La Frontier ahead.

I am abandoning making a Media Thread on the former bird website, and will update that here now. The plan is to list whatever I'm watching/reading/playing once a month or so, with how I'm feeling about it. Plus I'll probably make longer writeups for anything I really liked that I want to talk about at length. And of course, there'll probably be spoilers for whatever 20+ year old thing I'm into right now.
Anyway, here's what I've been doing so far this year:
Fist of the North Star, volume 8: The finale of the battle with Souther, up to Toki's death at the ends of Ryuga. Raoh and Toki's fight, and the reveal that they're blood brothers, was definitely /much/ better in the manga than the Toei anime. I definitely still love the Toei anime, but reading the manga, I'm realizing every problem I had with the series was anime-original.
Patlabor 2: Somehow, the only part of Patlabor I haven't seen yet is the last two movies. Patlabor 2 is a damn good movie! It's definitely a Mamoru Oshii film. There's a lot of neat stuff going on, and I liked having a big focus on Shinobu. But also, it's definitely so wildly different from the rest of Patlabor. I like it, and I want to rewatch it at some point, but it's not my favorite entry.
Police Story: Buddy of mine got in a nice new blu-ray that we watched. Now this is fucking cinema. Excellent fights, mind-blowing stunts, hysterical laugh out loud bits throughout. Absolutely want to watch the other two.
I Am A Dog: Don Matsuguro's Life: They got Yasuo Yamada, the original voice of Lupin, to play Lupin but a dog, basically. An entertaining movie about talking dogs for kids, but has a few bits that are maybe a little too brutal or intense for the target audience. My favorite role besides Yamada was definitely Toshio Furukawa as a loveable little scamp.
California Crisis: Probably not "good", by any real standard, but I had fun with it. Some good chase sequences, definitely really and truly feels like it's set in California in a lot of entertaining ways. Has something of a non-ending, but I think that's more of a riff on sci-fi alien encounter movies of the time, than anything.
That's all the completed! Currently in progress:
Anime: Metallic Rouge, Soaring Sky Precure, Dungeon Meshi, Shangri-La Frontier, Freiren (few episodes behind), Bang Bravern.
Going to start: Pon no Michi, Synduality S2, probably something else I'm forgetting.
Manga: Skip and Loafer (only just started v.1), Hokuto no Ken (need to buy a copy of vol.9)
Going to start: I swear I'm going to get into Berserk this year. I have the first three omnibuses.
Video games: A lot in progress, not sure what I'm going to play next.

Belle (2021)
Suzu is a shy, everyday high school student living in a rural village. For years, she has only been a shadow of herself. But when she enters “U”, a massive virtual world, she escapes into her online persona as Belle, a gorgeous and globally-beloved singer. One day, her concert is interrupted by a monstrous creature chased by vigilantes. As their hunt escalates, Suzu embarks on an emotional and epic quest to uncover the identity of this mysterious “beast” and to discover her true self in a world where you can be anyone.
TL;DR: Do I recommend it?
> Very frikkin much.
The long of it:
Studio: GKIDS
Director: Hosoda Mamoru
Writer: Hosoda Mamoru
Music: Ludvig Forssell, Hazama Miho, Iwasaki Taisei, Bando Yuta
Cast: Nakamura Kaho, Satoh Takeru, Ikuta Lilas, Narita Ryo
Runtime: 121 minutes
IMDB | RottenTomatoes | Official Site
Watched: on December 24th
Reaction:
± [Warning: avoiding SPOILERS much as i can but it still hints at the plot evolution.] The parallels in U with its basically straight rip of the plot and character roles from Beauty and the Beast gave off the impression that this film would be a fun teenager romantic comedy. Even our best guess only got the situation right and not the identity, not until just before the reveal.
What a surprising turn of plot. Much darker and more serious than what i thought it might be purely from seeing millenium parade's music video --which was what brought this film to my attention. Very good though. Definitely a rollercoaster ride of emotions.
Memorable aspect of the movie:
+ Music. Definitely. Brought me to tears at one point. Definitely the point where they want you to.
+ Animation. A delightful treat for the eyes, with the differences of animation style from the real world to the VR game. I love this practice in these kind-of isekai (like Shangri-La Frontier, and actual isekai Log Horizon and the like).
+ Story. Man, that story. 10/10 would recommend.

That fruition's for the viewers who need a loser to pity
Plus an underlying message of a greater disconnection

Maybe I could be your daily downer
If his brain left his body and was headed for the door
Would you take it and then help it find its way into a jar?
No? fuck it, let him hop around a maze
We can see who's really lost when the schadenfreude fades

This perfect dark
That's why I'm here

This woman is a famous fashion model who spends her freetime griefing people in online videogames
The sheer pettiness of her evil honestly makes her hotter to me than a regular anime woman with bloodlust.

It is very poor but believable game design that the programmers forgot to program the npcs to understand queer stuff, so when players (even just cis players that like eye candy or roleplaying) play a character different than their birth gender the poor npcs have no context and you can hear the dialup tone as their poor little algorithms get strained

It amuses me that Sunraku was so nervous around the bunny boss.
The giant, unique, nightmarish monster wolf? Scary, but I’ll do my best!
A big, yakuza-like bunny? SWEATING BULLETS 😨
Granted, his worry after calling him “Aniki” 兄貴 could have just been worry of messing up the unique event, but he seemed very intimidated even before that.
I’m not sure of all the social implications of 兄貴, but it’s apparently like respectfully calling him an elder brother, his senior, and/or an older man.
It’s also supposedly used in Yakuza (criminal organizations) to address senior members (based on a quick search, I is not an expert).
I’m not sure if it could be taken offensively, but given age is an implication of it, and maybe the bunny doesn’t see himself as a crime boss? Probably. 🔫🐰
