Whiteman’s  lounging with a whisky, looking comfortably casual in a pair of chinos and a t-shirt—blazer combination. He might be taken for any young, up-and-coming London professional out for a drink to celebrate the long weekend. Hillinghead, by contrast, looks like he should be at a wedding- the man’s in a three piece suit and the most complexly knotted tie she’s ever seen.  Still, Shahara’s hardly going to judge him for feeling more comfortable completely covered up and the man is (she still can’t really wrap her head around this) a Victorian. He’s got a pint of beer in front of him, though it doesn’t look like he’s touched it. 

She takes the first of the two empty seats at their table, her coke sloshing over the side of the glass as she sits, and remarks: “You two found your way around alright then?”

Whiteman sniffs sharply and half shrugs. “Fine. Nice to see the place not bombed to bits and rationing over.”

“It’s so- loud,” Hillinghead murmurs. “And crowded, and it smells-”

“It’s always smelled,” Whiteman interjects. “What, was it all roses in your time? I don’t believe that.”

“No,” Hillinghead stresses. “But it is- more.” he rubs the bridge of his nose.  “Have you heard from-” He freezes, staring at something just over Whiteman’s shoulder. Shahara can read a shift in to flight-or-fight posture easily and from the way he’s suddenly more alert, Whiteman’s clocked that something’s got Hilinghead spooked as well.

“Problem?” he asks quietly, in his clipped, cockney accent; a half-strangled vowel slips from Hillinghead’s throat and Shahara turns to see what he’s looking at. There’s two men enjoying what’s clearly a date, holding hands and locking lips. Shahara sighs internally, bracing herself for a slew of Victorian attitudes- “Yeah,” she says, a little sarcastically- Hillinghead’s knuckles have gone white, he’s clenching his fist so hard. The gold of his wedding band stands stark against it. “That’s allowed, nowadays- we don’t care.” 

“Hm?” Whiteman glances around- there’s a moment where Shahara thinks she’s gonna have to deal with 1940s attitudes as well, but Whiteman turns back, uninterested. “Fair enough.” he starts patting himself down, like he’s looking for something in his pockets. 

“They can-” Hillinghead murmurs. “I could…” He swipes for the beer and downs a quarter of the pint in one. Now Whiteman looks interested, he pauses his search, leans right forward and says, smirking, “Detective Inspector Hillinghead. Do you have a fancy man?”

Hillinghead sputters and brings down the glass. “Are you twelve?” he demands, something of the outraged parent seeping into his tone as– he’s blushing, Shahara realises. He’s actually blushing. 

“Are you-?” She asks, leaning forward, and she knows it’s rude and none of her business, but still. “Are you gay?” The wedding ring. “Bi?”she suggests, as a follow up, and then: “Do you have a boyfriend?”

“I- what? I-” he looks back at the couple, then grabs his beer again. “I have- I have a- I have Henry,” he downs more of the beer. “It-it would be nice, to- to not…” he trails off, his eyes drifting away from both of them.

“See, I’ve always been a bachelor- a bachelor bachelor, not a confirmed bachelor, myself, but I - fuck, I left my cigars and my lighter in the other jacket-”

“Language,” Hilinghead reprimands at the same time as Shahara says: “You can’t smoke in here anyway.”

Whiteman drops his elbow to the table and points at her. “You what?”

“No smoking in public places, it’s banned.”

Whiteman flops back in his seat and grabs for his whisky. “The future is bollocks.” he drains the glass and slams it down. “Good whisky though. So. While we wait for Maplewood to join us….Hillinghead can kiss blokes, and I can’t smoke in a pub. What else should we know about this 2023, then…?”

I just finished watching bodies on netflix and like..WOW what a great show. If only netflix could keep that quality up in future projects.

I also DESPERATELY need someone to write a fic where Karl adopts Esther or something, I love them and they both deserve to be happy :')

headcanons for the characters from Bodies going out on halloween except they're all in modern times

Shahara, Iris, Karl, Alfred, and Henry all go along to take Esther and Jawad out trick-or-treating mostly just so Shahara can show them all what Halloween is

Alfred is very happy to be able to wear his whole Victorian suit gettup without being stared at weird (he feels naked in just one layer of clothes)

Him and Henry go as Sherlock and Watson

Henry takes his old-timey camera partially as a prop, partially to take photos of everyone

He loves seeing all the costume, while he's developing them he tells Alfred something about the costumes people choose to dress up as being reflections of their inner selves finally brought out

Esther becomes obsessed with being able to get the most candy possible

She forces Karl to wear a matching costume in hopes it'll get people to give them more

Karl has to stop her from swiping more candy from little kids passing by

She hasn't seen this much candy since the rationing started

Iris isn't as into all the halloween decorating and stuff but she decides it would be fun to dress up like Defoe's body (except clothed of course) so she watched a bunch of sfx makeup tutorials to make it look like her eye was shot out

whenever anyone asks her about her costume she tells them the full ghost story of no exit hole, no bullet found, no one heard a gun go off, "some say the body will keep appearing until his murderer has been brought to justice"

She tells some of the little kids "do you want to know a secret... I shot him"

Shahara always has to calm to the kid down after that but Iris keeps on doing it

Shahara is exhausted by the end of the night taking care of the whole group

Karl lets her go to bed early and babysits Jawad

When Jawad gets upset about how much more candy Esther got than him Karl forces her to share some but it turns into a big argument

"there's not rationing anymore, we can get you more treats later" "but I earned this fair and square"

eventually he gets her to give Jawad some but she steals it back in the middle of the night

watching “bodies” (netflix) with my mom was so fun because

— she also shipped the fuck out of henry & alfred (she was so soft too when the guys finally got close, we were both on the verge of tears lmao)

— we both loved shahara so much, best girl fr <33

— we both went ahead and said “i can make him worse” whenever carl was on the screen, doing some bad things idbzjbsh

— also just carl & esther being an adorable family and us both going crazy over them

— the scene in ep8 when alfred calls mannix “elias” and the man’s face goes like 😳wtf😳 WE BOTH CHEERED OMG

— stopping randomly to try and collect our thoughts and theories about wtf is going on like three times per episode😭

+1 us just quoting random shit from the series like “know you are loved” or that whole ass convo when polly was done with mannix and just wanted him dead/to kill him herself 😭

well anyways, stream BODIES on NETFLIX it’s freaking incredible!!

Her, Ishmael, Jawad and Elias would form such a sweet and nice family.

Iris and Gabriel would become great friends at first, oblivious to their feelings for onee another until they are finally shoved into each others arms by the others and they would unexpectedly get married.

Also saw this one post mentioning how funyn a crossover between bodies and Morse would be and that Thirsday absolutely semi adopt Hassan because of her mastermind brain but also go "Oh my god there's 2 of them." When her and Morse meet. And also maybe set them up together.
