“The Prophet”

Finished right on the day of death of Mister Rozz Williams.

Some new material appeared on YouTube and I watched a live performance of Shadow Project and listened to a radio interview. Of course Rozz’ most known project is Christian Death, but I also really like Shadow Project and the spoken words. Years ago I purchased a copy of “From Christian Death to Death”, a book with photographic and text material. Rozz was also a great visual artist, there are amazing collages and drawings shown in said book. I read some of the (sometimes more than cryptic) lyrics and thought about his ideas of life and the world. It seems not much has changed. I had the urge to combine all the mysterious ideas and eventually created this painting. A huge marble portrait above empty wastelands. Hooded creatures face a writing on the ground, arranged in a spiral. The hood is sewn up, the creature unable to see and therefore to understand. It is unsure at all if there is a person underneath. Maybe the creatures are able to hear, but the marble head is unable to talk. The spiral which unfurls and opens itself, is a combination of quotes: "My eyes have seen the light/ Have chosen darkness/ You can't dwell on the bad/ How far things have come/ You have to stop". The head is painted in the style of ancient greek or roman statues. If one deals with greek mythology, there are some tragic stories about bad prophecies fulfilling despite of warnings of prophets or seers. The bee seems to be connected to the statue in some way. It appears it has stung the stone and condemned itself to death. An indecipherable mystery.

We can merely guess what happens in a person ready for suicide. I don’t think there is any weakness in the act of taking one’s own life. An act of something drastically final and irreversible. Someone told me “One cannot take on the burden of weltschmerz (of world-weariness) on oneself” and maybe this is what happens to some people. It’s damn hard dealing with depression, and dealing with all the bad, the pain and fear in the world won’t make it any better.  Sometimes it’s hard to remember the good. So, try to save the bees. Try to make the world a little bit better. Remember Mister Williams.

Happy Birthday ♏️ to and remembering Rozz Williams and what a creative force he was. (November 6, 1963 - April 1, 1998) R.I.P. 🖤🥀💔 I first met Rozz in my late teens at a Premature Ejaculation performance art, experimental, and industrial noise show he did with Ron Athey. I had not seen Christian Death yet at that point. Thanks to my friend Gene Evans curating and promoting these events I saw Rozz do a few other performances with PE. I soon after saw Christian Death with Rikk Agnew and later with different lineup changes including the Pompeii 99 members featuring the amazing Gitane Demone. I also saw a later incarnation of Daucus Karota but never got to see Shadow Project. Rozz Williams took his name from a gravestone in a Pomona cemetery. His obsession with artists like David Bowie, Roxy Music, Throbbing Gristle and writers like William S. Burroughs, Arthur Rimbaud, Baudelaire, surrealism, dadaism, existentialism, nihilism, death and his rejection and repudiation of his religious upbringing shaped the intensely dark lamenting artist that he became forging what was known as deathrock at that time which he may be credited as one of it’s architects. He was not comfortable with the goth category as that term was still not being used in relation to that style and genre and it was more of a movement associated with bands in the UK albeit both deathrock and goth eventually overlapped and merged and both were spawned by the gothic rock progenitors of the late 1960s and 1970s. He was such a prolific artist in the various art forms, bands and projects. Before he shuffled off this mortal coil he acted in and co-directed an experimental psychological horror short film with ambient noise and no dialogue titled Pig.
