BOSTON - The body of missing Whitman woman Margaret "Maggie" Mbitu was found in a car at a Logan Airport garage Thursday, according to Massachusetts State Police and the Suffolk County District Attorney's office. Investigators are looking for her partner, 40-year-old Kevin Kangethe, of Lowell, who left Boston on a flight to Kenya.
Sources told WBZ-TV's I-Team Mbitu was stabbed and left in the passenger seat of the car.
Police have an arrest warrant for Kangethe, charging him with the 31-year-old's murder, authorities said. They are working with Kenyan authorities to find him.
Mbitu was reported missing by her family on Monday. She was last seen Monday night, leaving her job at BAMSI in Halifax.  The company said Mbitu was a nurse who worked in their group homes for more than ten years, helping people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
"She was warm, caring, and loved by everyone she worked with, both staff and the people she cared for in our group homes. As an agency, we are in mourning over the loss of such an amazing young (woman)," executive vice president Ulea Grace Lago said in a statement.
Mbitu's coworkers had posted a flyer on Facebook, praying for her safe return.
It's heartbreaking news for family friend Jane Wambu who said Maggie was like a daughter.
"It's just very, very, unfortunate that somebody would choose to do what they have done," Wambu told WBZ. "It's definitely such a great loss to the parents, to her relatives, and to the community at large and I would say to the nation."
The FBI has an international operations office in Kenya's capital, Nairobi. Former FBI special agent Jennifer Coffindaffer says it's likely agents are already communicating with local authorities to track down Kangethe and bring him back to face charges.
"The United States has an extradition treaty with Kenya, so things look very good in terms of Kenyan authorities cooperating," Coffindaffer said.
The I-Team first reported that police issued a "be on the lookout" alert for the car at about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and found it overnight parked inside the airport's Central Parking garage. Sources tell the I-Team that investigators are piecing together a timeline using video surveillance.
"We're just praying that the Lord may give the family peace and above everything that her culprit, this person may be arrested," Wambu said.

Sun Myung Moon and Hak Ja Han refused to help Hyo Jin pay court ordered money to Nansook and their grandchildren. Hyo Jin was jailed.
youtube
The Moon family tactic was to grind Nansook down financially so she would be forced return to her husband who had threatened to kill her. The “True Parents” failed because the judge understood their game. The “True Parents” had also failed to raise or guide their son to treat others with decency. The “True Parents” consistently blamed Nansook, whom they had married to Hyo Jin at age fifteen, for their own son’s failures and criminality.
Judge Edward Ginsberg didn’t buy Hyo Jin’s claim of poverty. He said he believes the Moon family is trying to squeeze Nansook Moon and her five young children. Judge Ginsberg agreed she must have money to pay her legal defense, and ordered Hyo Jin back to jail for another sixty days.
Nansook’s attorney, Weld Henshaw: “The church is, and the [Moon] family is going to devote all their energies, not to try to resolve the situation but to winning and grinding [Nansook and] their own grandchildren down. It is a pathetic, terrible situation.”
Suzanne Bates for WBZ News 4 in Boston: “Whether or not Hyo Jin can afford to pay, it is certain the Moon family could. Reverend Sun Myung Moon, who claims to be the messiah and the champion of family values, has millions of dollars in Trust Funds which have always supported his family, but he is not writing any checks to get his first son [Hyo Jin] out of jail.”

Full transcript of the WBZ reports:
WBZ-TV Boston News 4
Next on WBZ News 4 … And tonight, a WBZ exclusive: Her life within the powerful family dynasty of the Reverend Sun Myung Moon. She says the family is living a lie.  …
A mother of five children, who says she was beaten and abused for years, is seeking help and shelter here is Massachusetts. Her name is Nansook Moon and she was married to the oldest son of the Reverend Sun Myung Moon, leader of the Unification Church. You may know them as the Moonies. They are a wealthy and powerful family whose influence extends around the world. But as Nansook Moon told WBZ’s Suzanne Bates, the Moon family is anything but the ideal one that Reverend Moon claims it to be.
Tumblr media
▲ Nansook being interviewed by Suzanne Bates.
Nansook: I didn’t know him. He didn’t know me.
Suzanne Bates: Nansook Hong was fifteen years old when her marriage to Hyo Jin Moon was arranged by Moon’s father, the Reverend Sun Myung Moon, leader of the Unification Church. She had seen but never met anyone in the Moon family, including her husband. Why did she go along?
Nansook: Because how I was raised, all my life, to say yes to Reverend Moon when it comes to the wedding.
Suzanne Bates: The Moons are a wealthy, powerful family, Nansook says, living the good life with swimming pools and mansions. But as for her marriage, Nansook says, ‘It was hell’. She says Hyo Jin was frequently drunk or high on cocaine, sometimes locking himself in their bedroom for days to do drugs and watch pornographic films. For most of their marriage, she says, Hyo Jin beat her, abused her sexually and emotionally, and threatened to kill her if she spoke up.
Nansook: He started [to be] physically abusive when I was pregnant with my second daughter. Well, I was afraid for the baby. He was, he was saying he was going to kill the baby, he was going to punch my stomach and kill the baby. He would hit my tummy, and then he, well, he basically he kept punching until he felt better.
Suzanne Bates: Nansook told me she endured the abuse, believing it was her mission from God and, she says, she found the courage to leave when she realized she might not survive.
Nansook: But I realized once he punched me [and] he sees the blood, then he, he says this is a thrill to be violent. And he kept going, punching here and there, my face, my chest, and on, everywhere.
Suzanne Bates: So she plotted her escape, and with the help of a friend, Madeleine Pretorius, Nansook made it to Massachusetts by packing her five children in a minivan in the middle of the night and fleeing to Lexington, Massachusetts, where her brother lives. She fled, not just her husband, but the family headed by the Reverend Sun Myung Moon, who at age 75, commands a multi billion dollar empire of churches and foundations. The Reverend Moon is known for these mass wedding ceremonies in stadiums around the world. But many don’t know, according to Nansook, Moon lives a lavish lifestyle, traveling by private jet with servants and bodyguards to homes and vacations all over the world.
Tumblr media
▲ The Moon family at their East Garden mansion.
Nansook: Reverend Moon, he controls the whole church’s finances which up to now I think is billions and billions of dollars.
Suzanne Bates: Moon claims he is the messiah; that he and his wife are the True Parents; the Moon family, the ideal family. He preaches against drinking, drugs and promiscuous sex. Yet, Hyo Jin, the oldest son who could inherit the power and riches of the Unification Church appears to defy his father’s words.
Concord District Court: Do you promise to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help me God?
Suzanne Bates: Last month Hyo Jin was in criminal court in Massachussetts to face charges he violated a restraining order by sending a threatening letter to Nansook. He pleaded guilty.
Judge: Moon, do you wish to plead guilty to this, Mr Moon?
Hyo Jin Moon: Yes
Tumblr media
▲ Hyo Jin Moon looking at the judge in court.
Suzanne Bates: The judge sentenced him to 18 months probation, ordered him to undergo random drug tests and counseling for drug and alcohol abuse.
Judge: A violation will subject you to two and a half years in the house of corrections. Do you understand that?
Hyo Jin Moon: Yes
Suzanne Bates: After the hearing his attorney said Hyo Jin will comply with the judge’s order and Hyo Jin said he will speak publicly when his divorce is final. …
Hyo Jin Moon: Well after everything is over. If I am through the divorce proceedings if I am… after the termination, I would love to sit down with you and talk to you, all about it.
One of Hyo Jin’s attorneys: I think we will defer proceedings until that time.
Suzanne Bates: You don’t have any further comments on your wife’s allegations about your threats to kill her?
Hyo Jin Moon: Not right now. When it is all over, sure.
Hyo Jin’s attorney: Thank you
5:25
Suzanne Bates: Though his attorney promised he will follow the judge’s order, there is no evidence Hyo Jin Moon has any regard for the law. Not only did he threat Nansook, a violation of the restraining order, he was on probation for two drunk driving convictions when he was arrested again for driving with a suspended license, a charge to which he pleaded guilty. And, Nansook says, her husband has ignored another judge’s order to turn over a sizable collection of guns to police.
Tumblr media
▲ Hyo Jin Moon was videotaped by the police when he drove his car to a police appointment. He was arrested for driving with a suspended license. It was reported in a local paper.
Nansook: He has no regard for the law, for the system, it always, everything always covered for him. He could get away with everything using people, resources, basically the church’s foundation.
Suzanne Bates: While the criminal matters get resolved, Nansook is also fighting in divorce court to get her husband to support her and her five children. She has spent thousands and thousands in legal fees trying to collect monthly child support payments ordered by the court which, she says, are almost always late.
Nansook: One constant fear for me was whether I can support my children or not. And what I wanted from the family is to acknowledge their responsibility about the children.
Suzanne Bates: Nansook decided to tell her story in part because she is still afraid of what her husband and his family will do.
Nansook: I think they will be very upset over the fact that I went public, and, Oh gosh, I don’t know what they are gonna do. I don’t know. If they decide that always their interest that I disappear then there is some possibility.
Suzanne Bates: Nansook also wants to expose the Moon family and some church leaders.
Nansook: Reverend Moon’s life style is lavish. He has 50-60 security guards, maids and cooks and personal maids and he travels first class. He was thinking about buying a private jet. Once you have the favor of Reverend Moon you can basically do whatever you want.
Suzanne Bates: Reverend Moon has said he will conquer and subjugate the world. Once proclaiming, “I am your brain.” Nansook Moon, the first and only member of the family to break away, says she fears the Moons, but she will never again be silent.

Jack Williams: In a letter to WBZ-TV, the Moon family attorney said they consider broadcast of Nansook Moon interview to be a violation of a court order in the case. However, according to Nansook’s attorneys, she is not barred from speaking publicly by any court order or agreement. We will follow the story. We will let you know what happens
Liz Walker: A follow-up now to our exclusive story earlier this month on Nansook Moon. She is married to the oldest son of the Reverend Sun Myung Moon, the leader of the Unification Church. Nansook Moon and her husband are involved in a bitter divorce battle that includes allegations of physical abuse, drug abuse and threats. Tonight her husband is in jail serving thirty days for contempt of court.
Tumblr media
▲ Hyo Jin Moon, in handcuffs, being taken away to jail.
Liz Walker: Hyo Jin Moon was led away from Concord District Court in handcuffs today in stark contrast to what he is used to. Last week in an exclusive interview with Suzanne Bates, Moon’s estranged wife, Nansook Moon, alleged he had beaten and threatened her. Mrs Moon fear for her life convinced her to leave the stormy pre-arranged marriage and flee to Lexington with her five children.
Nansook: He started [to be] physically abusive when I was pregnant with my second daughter. Well, I was afraid for the baby. He was, he was saying he was going to kill the baby, he was going to punch my stomach and kill the baby.
Liz Walker: Nansook Moon tells of the Moon family’s lavish lifestyle and of her husband’s use of drugs. Last month Hyo Jin, pleaded guilty to violating a restraining order. He agreed to undergo random drug tests and counseling for drug and alcohol abuse.
In the Middlesex County Court, the Moon v. Moon matter
Liz Walker: In court today Hyo Jin was held in contempt for ignoring a court order to pay $65,000 in fees to his wife’s attorneys. The defense claims the defense claims Hyo Jin does not have the money.
Attorney James O’Connell : Anyone who looks at the evidence in this case would be satisfied that he does not have $65,000 available to him to make that payment.
Liz Walker: The judge wan’t convinced.
Tumblr media
▲ Judge Edward Ginsberg
Judge Edward Ginsberg: He is in contempt, he is in contempt.
Liz Walker: Judge Edward Ginsberg ruled that Moon’s lifestyle makes it obvious the money is available.
Nansook’s attorney, Weld Henshaw: The marital home, which admittedly is used for other purposes too, has been appraised for over $23 million.
Liz Walker: The judge ordered Hyo Jin Moon to spent thirty days behind bars at Middlesex County Jail unless he finds a way to pay up sooner.
Tumblr media
▲ Hyo Jin looking at Nansook in the divorce court.
Liz Walker: Hyo Jin Moon’s attorney is planning an appeal. He has filed for a stay of the sentence. A request that was taken under advisement late this afternoon. But at this hour Hyo Jin Moon is still behind bars in Cambridge. Of course we will keep you posted on this story.

Liz Walker: Now a follow-up to a News 4 exclusive. You may recall the story we did on the divorce case involving Nansook Moon and her husband, Hyo Jin Moon. Hyo Jin Moon is the oldest son of the Reverend Sun Myung Moon, and heir to the wealthy, powerful Unification Church. Tonight Hyo Jin remains in a Massachussetts jail, still refusing to pay tens of thousands of dollars. News 4 anchor, Suzanne Bates, broke this story and now has this follow up.
Tumblr media
Suzanne Bates: Shackled and slightly subdued by thirty days in the Middlesex County Jail, Hyo Jin Moon came back to court [in Cambridge] and claimed again he is too broke to pay $65,000 in his wife’s legal fees ordered by the judge.
Tumblr media
Suzanne Bates: The Moon family, headed by the Reverend Sun Myung Moon, is widely believed to be worth billions. Hyo Jin’s own secretary recently testified in court he brought home $600,000 cash in brown paper bags, but today Hyo Jin’s attorney said Hyo Jin can’t pay because the Moon family cut him off.
Attorney James O’Connell: His compensation has been terminated. He is no longer a beneficiary of the Family Trust.
Suzanne Bates: But Judge Edward Ginsberg didn’t buy Hyo Jin’s claim of poverty. He said he believes the Moon family is trying to squeeze Nansook Moon and her five young children.
Tumblr media
▲ Nansook Hong sitting in court
Judge Edward Ginsberg: He can pay the money. That money can be paid. If he chooses to be stubborn that is his problem, not this court’s problem.
Suzanne Bates: Nansook Moon fled her husband and the Moon family compound after surviving what she described as a violent and abusive marriage. Judge Ginsberg agreed she must have money to pay her legal defense, and ordered Hyo Jin back to jail for another sixty days.
Suzanne Bates to Hyo Jin Moon: Why haven’t you paid the money? …
Tumblr media
▲ Hyo Jin Moon smiled but did not answer when asked “Why haven’t you paid the money?”
Attorney James O’Connell: My client has paid all the support for his wife and children that this court has ordered. He has paid it consistently from day one. He paid it on a voluntary basis and he paid it pursuant to court order.
Suzanne Bates: He hasn’t paid the legal fees that were ordered in February.
Attorney James O’Connell: The legal fees are not support for his wife and children.
Suzanne Bates: Nansook’s attorney says the family is now threatening to cut off child support as well and Nansook has no other income.
Attorney Weld Henshaw: The church is, and the [Moon] family is going to devote all their energies, not to try to resolve the situation but to winning and grinding their own grandchildren down. It is a pathetic, terrible situation.
Suzanne Bates: Whether or not Hyo Jin can afford to pay, it is certain the Moon family could. Reverend Sun Myung Moon, who claims to be the messiah and the champion of family values, has millions of dollars in Trust Funds which have always supported his family, but he is not writing any checks to get his first son out of jail. – In Cambridge, Suzanne Bates, WBZ News 4.

60 Minutes with Mike Wallace
Tumblr media
Mike Wallace: If you’re a 15 year-old Korean girl and your spiritual leader, your messiah, selects you to marry his son, that is about as close as you can get to heaven on earth. But sadly Nansook Hong’s marriage into the Reverend Sun Myung Moon’s family turned out to be more like hell on earth. As you will hear from her, and from one of Sun Myung Moon’s daughters, Moon himself and some of his children had not always practiced what Moon preaches. His Unification Church stresses no sex outside marriage, no alcohol, no illegal drugs. But Nansook says that is not what she saw after she married the Reverend’s eldest son, Hyo-jin Moon, the young man they call the prince.
Nansook Hong: He was the prince, the prince. He was very abusive, both physically and emotionally. He is alcoholic. He is addicted to drugs.

Just how close is the New Hampshire Democratic primary? The five latest polls of the state seem to disagree, but our forecast is somewhat confident that Sen. Bernie Sanders will win. He currently has a 2 in 3 (64 percent) chance of winning the most votes, while former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg has a 3 in 10 (30 percent) chance. We actually have a pretty good idea of what’s happening in New Hampshire, too, as those five most recent polls actually agree more than they initially appear to. Let’s run through them:
The latest installment of the 7 News/Emerson College tracking poll in New Hampshire, conducted Feb. 7-8, showed Sanders at 30 percent, Buttigieg at 20 percent, Sen. Amy Klobuchar at 13 percent, Sen. Elizabeth Warren at 12 percent and former Vice President Joe Biden at 11 percent.
Meanwhile, the latest batch of results from the Suffolk University/Boston Globe/WBZ-TV tracking poll (also conducted Feb. 7-8) shows Sanders at 24 percent and Buttigieg at 22 percent. Warren grabbed 13 percent, Biden 10 percent and Klobuchar 9 percent.
A Feb. 5-8 poll from CNN and the University of New Hampshire somewhat split the difference, putting Sanders at 28 percent and Buttigieg at 21 percent. The other candidates greatly trailed: Biden had 12 percent, Warren had 9 percent and Klobuchar had 6 percent.
According to a YouGov/CBS News poll from Feb. 5-8, Sanders is at 29 percent support in the Granite State, Buttigieg is at 25 percent, Warren is at 17 percent, Biden is at 12 percent and Klobuchar is at 10 percent.
Finally, NBC10 Boston/Franklin Pierce University/Boston Herald are out with a poll (conducted Feb. 5-8 by RKM Research and Communications) that says Sanders has 23 percent support in New Hampshire, Buttigieg has 20 percent, Warren has 16 percent and Biden has 14 percent.
At first glance, these polls appear to show a 10-point Sanders lead, a 7-point Sanders lead, a 4-point Sanders lead, a 3-point Sanders lead and a 2-point Sanders lead. How to reconcile this? This is where it comes in very handy to be familiar with what these pollsters have said in the past. And as it turns out, UNH, Emerson College and RKM have all tended to show higher numbers for Sanders than other pollsters have, and Suffolk University has historically tended to show lower numbers for Sanders than other pollsters have.
For example, based on the degree to which Emerson has overestimated Sanders in the past, our model treats his 30 percent in that poll as more like 25 percent once we adjust for house effects. And his 24 percent in that Suffolk poll is actually closer to 27 percent in our model.
So when you make these adjustments to the five polls above, a more consistent picture of the New Hampshire primary emerges: Sanders probably leads by about 5 points, although the RKM poll remains an outlier — it suggests that Buttigieg may actually be neck and neck with Sanders.
Sanders has a pretty consistent New Hampshire lead
Results of the five most recent polls of the New Hampshire Democratic primary for Sanders and Buttigieg, adjusted by house effects
Raw Results Adjusted Results Pollster Sanders Buttigieg Margin Sanders Buttigieg Margin Emerson 30% 20% Sanders +10 25% 20% Sanders +4 Suffolk 24 22 Sanders +2 27 22 Sanders +5 UNH 28 21 Sanders +7 26 21 Sanders +5 YouGov 29 25 Sanders +4 29 24 Sanders +5 RKM 23 20 Sanders +3 21 23 Buttigieg +2
Source: Polls
Of course, with still a few days left until the primary, 5 points wouldn’t be a safe lead for Sanders. But it’s notable that Buttigieg’s upward movement in the polls, which had been extremely evident in previous installments of the Emerson and Suffolk tracking polls, appears to have stalled out. From the Feb. 6-7 edition to the Feb. 7-8 edition of the Emerson poll, Buttigieg’s vote share, after days of steady increases, went from 24 percent to 20 percent. And in the Suffolk tracker, Buttigieg went from 11 percent in the Feb. 2-3 installment to a high of 25 percent in the Feb. 6-7 installment, only to fall back to 22 percent in this latest poll. Although these drops are all within the margin of error, we can at least say that Buttigieg’s climb has not continued. And Sanders’s vote shares have been quite consistent throughout the life of both tracking polls.
Another wild card is how far behind Warren is. Her 9 percent performance in the CNN/UNH poll was eyebrow-raising — but she got nearly double that support in the YouGov/CBS News and RKM polls. Here, house effects once again help explain some of the discrepancy, although not all of it. YouGov has been high on Warren all cycle, so our model thinks her 17 percent performance in that poll is more like 14 percent. Same with RKM — our model adjusts her 16 percent in that poll down to 15 percent. And UNH has slightly underestimated Warren in previous polls, so our model is treating her 9 percent in the UNH poll as closer to 10 percent.
By contrast, all the recent polls have had pretty disappointing numbers for Biden (between 10 and 14 percent). Factor it all in, and Warren is now ever so slightly ahead of Biden in our New Hampshire polling average, 13.1 percent to 12.7 percent. Needless to say, a second consecutive fourth-place finish (after Iowa) could create real doubts about the viability of Biden’s campaign.
Overall, Sanders remains the most likely candidate to reach a majority of pledged delegates, according to our national forecast. He has a 2 in 5 (44 percent) chance of doing so. The next most likely candidate is Biden, with a 1 in 5 (20 percent) chance — however, a scenario in which no one achieves a pledged-delegate majority is even more likely, at 1 in 4 (25 percent).
However, these numbers are in a kind of suspended animation, as we haven’t seen any national polls that have been conducted since Feb. 5, a time when the results out of Iowa were still very much in limbo (in fairness, they still are). Our model will likely react quite strongly to the next few national polls, as we get a much clearer standing of how Iowa and, by that point, maybe New Hampshire, have affected the national race.

'It's Been Devastating': UMass Amherst Students Suspended For Not Wearing Masks Off-Campus ANDOVER (CBS) – Andover parents Kristin and Scott are speaking out on behalf of their daughter. She along with two of her friends are freshmen at UMass Amherst. A picture posted on social media of the three friends not wearing masks outside was handed over to the university and that has landed them in serious trouble. “There was a photo sent to the administration of these girls outside off campus on a Saturday. This is why they lost a whole semester of their schooling,” Kristin said. Three UMass Amherst students were kicked off campus for not wearing masks (WBZ-TV) Students on campus say the rules have been tight this year but for good reason. “Maybe a little harsh but like I understand it because you’re not supposed to be doing that,” one student told WBZ Friday night. “The town of Amherst made it really clear they don’t want any big parties,” another student said. What also infuriates the parents of the suspended students was video of the UMass Amherst Hockey Team celebrating their national championship on campus. Some students, including some of the players, could be seen not wearing masks. “I just want the university administration to be equitable and fair,” RJ said. Since their suspension, the students have been studying remotely at their homes. However, last week they were cut off from virtual learning. They were not allowed to take their finals, so parents say their kids’ semester was a total loss, both financially and academically. “That negates this whole semester $16,000 of money and they have to reapply for next semester. But they missed housing registration,” Scott said. UMass Amherst released a statement saying: “Students received a number of public health messages this semester that emphasized the importance of following public health protocols and the consequences for not complying, and those messages were also shared on UMass social media channels.” The parents disagree with the university’s decision. “One little thing happens and you’re out? 1 in 5 MA eateries won't reopen due to COVID-19
Tumblr media
BOSTON (CBS) — The coronavirus pandemic continues to hit the restaurant industry hard. New numbers from the Massachusetts Restaurant Association show that thousands have been forced to shut down permanently in 2020. MRA CEO Bob Luz told WBZ-TV that roughly 3,600 restaurants have closed for good – that’s about a fifth of all restaurants in the state. He said that while outdoor dining has kept some restaurants afloat, winter could bring even more closures. Il Molo in Boston’s North End closed its doors in March and still has not reopened because its bar makes up 20 percent of the restaurant’s capacity. “That’s like, you’re raising a child. All of a sudden you lose a child. Yea, it was pretty gut-wrenching,” Il Molo’s owner, Donato Frattaroli said. Boston has seen longtime favorites including The Pour House, The Fours and Cheers at Faneuil Hall close their doors for good in recent weeks. Restaurants in Massachusetts are allowed to offer limited indoor dining with tables spaced at least six feet apart, and bars have been shuttered until there’s a vaccine or coronavirus therapeutics. RELATED: List Of Boston Bars That Have Closed Due To Pandemic Last week, Gov. Charlie Baker said it was “heartbreaking” to see bars and restaurants struggle. It’s been a week since Iowa voted, and we have few national polls to help us understand just how much the caucus results — messy though they were — have affected the attitudes of potential Democratic primary voters around the country. But today Quinnipiac University released a national survey conducted entirely after Iowa voted, and it found a new polling front-runner: Sen. Bernie Sanders, who led the field with 25 percent support.
Former Vice President Joe Biden, meanwhile, fell nine points since Quinnipiac last conducted a national survey in late January. This is the first time Sanders has led in a national Quinnipiac survey during the 2020 cycle. As you can see in our national polling average, the gap between Biden and Sanders is shrinking, too — they’re essentially tied at 22 percent.
Tumblr media
The Quinnipiac poll also underscored just how fragmented voter support currently is — five candidates polled at least 10 percent. Just behind Biden, who polled at 17 percent, came former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg at 15 percent and Sen. Elizabeth Warren at 14 percent. Former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg wasn’t too distant of a fifth at 10 percent, which marked a 4-point increase from Quinnipiac’s late January poll.
As for how this poll affects our primary forecast, it didn’t shift things that dramatically because the model had already anticipated Sanders’s national numbers would improve after Iowa while Biden’s would fall. However, the fact that Bloomberg made such a substantial gain — he nearly doubled his support from 8 percent in Quinnipiac’s January poll to 15 percent — means that it’s also increasingly likely that no one will win a majority of pledged delegates. Bottom line: Sanders’s gains were already priced in, so the Quinnipiac poll largely fit within the model’s expectations, but there’s also a lot of uncertainty and a 1 in 4 chance that no single candidate wins a majority.
Tumblr media
In the meantime, though, the campaigns’ immediate focus is New Hampshire, which holds its primary tomorrow. With the new national poll plus several new New Hampshire polls from last night and this morning now incorporated into our model, the FiveThirtyEight forecast gives Sanders a 2 in 3 (67 percent) chance of winning the Granite State. Buttigieg — who had been gaining ground in New Hampshire but whose polling numbers there appear to have leveled out — has a 3 in 10 (29 percent) chance. No other candidate has more than a 2 percent chance of carrying the state, although our model has Warren and Biden in a tight race for third place — Warren is forecast to get 14 percent of the vote, on average, while Biden gets 13 percent (but remember, the margin of error of these estimates is quite large).
These odds have changed little over the last few days, in part because we keep getting a ton of New Hampshire polls that say roughly the same thing: Sanders leads, with Buttigieg hovering in striking distance and all other candidates trailing to various degrees. We’ve gotten five polls in just the last 24 hours, including the final installments of the three tracking polls in the state:
The final 7 News/Emerson College poll, conducted Saturday and Sunday, found Sanders at 30 percent, Buttigieg at 23 percent, Klobuchar at 14 percent, Warren at 11 percent and Biden at 10 percent. When you adjust for Emerson’s house effects (Emerson has tended to show better numbers for Sanders than other pollsters), our model interprets this as a 1-point Sanders lead.
The final Suffolk University/Boston Globe/WBZ-TV poll, also conducted Saturday and Sunday, gave Sanders 27 percent, Buttigieg 19 percent, Klobuchar 14 percent and Biden and Warren 12 percent each. But because Suffolk has historically featured pretty poor numbers for Sanders, our model interprets this as a 10-point Sanders lead.
And according to the last installment of CNN/University of New Hampshire poll, conducted Feb. 6-9, Sanders at 29 percent support, Buttigieg at 22 percent, Biden at 11 percent, Warren at 10 percent and Klobuchar at 7 percent. After our house effects adjustment, the model interprets this as a 5-point Sanders lead.
These final tracking polls disagree more than they did yesterday about the size of Sanders’s lead, but are generally positive for Sanders. Emerson and Suffolk also found Klobuchar making a small charge into third place; for example, she has gone from 6 percent in Feb. 6-7’s Suffolk poll to 14 percent in this latest one. This has perhaps come at the cost of blunting Buttigieg’s momentum, as his vote share has not changed much over the last few days in either poll, even though he gained several points in them throughout last week. And the three installments of CNN/UNH’s poll that we’ve gotten have shown little movement for all candidates.
We also got two new non-tracking polls of New Hampshire:
According to the University of Massachusetts Lowell, Sanders has 25 percent in New Hampshire, Buttigieg has 17 percent, Warren 15 percent, Biden 14 percent and Klobuchar 8 percent. After the house effects adjustment, that’s akin to a 7-point Sanders lead. However, it’s worth noting that this poll is a little older than the others, as it was conducted Feb. 4-7.
Finally, American Research Group, in a poll fielded Saturday and Sunday, says that Sanders is at 28 percent, Buttigieg is at 20 percent, Biden and Klobuchar are each at 13 percent and Warren is at 11 percent. That computes to a 5-point Sanders lead in our model, after house effects are considered.
These polls suggest there is still a chance that Warren, Biden or Klobuchar could catch Buttigieg for second place. However, at the same time, they confirmed the findings of almost every other poll we’ve seen in New Hampshire this week: Sanders has a modest lead.

Miss Mayhem and I decided to start this blog as a bit of a therapy project. We are sisters who grew up together, then grew apart when Miss Mayhem left the Unification Church that we had grown up in. After I left as well, we began to retrace our steps to begin our relationship as sisters and friends again. This blog is a part of that healing process.
“I’m not sure where this misconception came from that a Moon-sanctioned union will be free of heart-ache, gut wrenching fights (either internal or with a spouse), and potential breakup. That should be Lesson #1 in any relationship, in any religion: there are no guarantees that it will work or be immediately fulfilling. A breakup can be a learning tool. But at least at the end of the day, outside of the Unification Church there is proper support for a struggling couple and less threat of “fire and brimstone” if things don’t work out. In fact, the breakups I’ve seen in the UC tend to be much nastier because of the religious ramifications.</rant>”

Why I stayed in the Unification Church for so long Vivid dreams, spiritual experiences, bizarre coincidences… all of these things played a big role in convincing me to join. I perceived them as a form of personal validation from God that I was doing the right thing. After a few of those, I would not have listened to anyone trying to tell me I had made a mistake. The Divine Principle appealed to me on an intellectual level. It made sense of all the bible stories I learned in Sunday School. The DP built on what was already familiar to me, so it did not seem exotic or strange, like Scientology or Hare Krishna or other groups at the time.
Over time, my ego and identity fused with the Unification Church. Without the UC/True Parents/Divine Principle, I had no identity. Therefore, it was absolutely necessary that I never quit or leave. Otherwise, I wouldn’t exist.
Fear was also a factor. I believed bad things happened to members who lose faith and leave. Satan would invade. I felt responsible to keep going, even when I felt nothing and was plagued by doubts, because my family and my ancestors depended on me to “get the victory.” If I left, they would accuse me of failing them. So I wasn’t just in it for myself. By the time the Blessing finally rolled around, I was bored with the UC/DP. I would have quit, but I had nowhere to go. It was easier to simply keep going rather than start over. Besides, I didn’t want to face my family and friends and hear them say, “I told you so.” So my UC ego kept be in check.
Staying in the UC creates its own inertia. The longer someone is in it, the greater the inertia. I call it the “leathery bonds of convenience.” Very tough and hard to break. Simply easier to stay together with a blessed spouse, especially after having a child, even when there’s no deep emotional connection.
I believe people stay in the UC simply because they no longer see any other alternative. They’re too old to start over. They’ve invested too much personal capital to walk away. Even if they no longer believe, they continue to cling to vague hope it will all work out somehow, someday. Peer pressure from the larger group cannot be overestimated either. Leaving the group is an act of betrayal, violation of a sacred trust. Even when it all goes to hell, the group ethos is to stick together, no matter what. It takes a lot of courage to overcome that.

Book: Holy Candy: Why I Joined A Cult And Married A Stranger (2014) What is the purpose of life? Is there a spiritual world? Does true love exist? If there is a God, why does he allow innocents to suffer? The desire to find answers to these questions – passed to her on a business card – led Yolande Brener to enter a bizarre, 15-year odyssey in a cult that would climax in her participation in one of the largest mass marriages in history. In HOLY CANDY, Yolande Brener pulls back the curtain on the church’s doings – but this is far from a simple black and white exposé. It is spooky, riveting, and utterly believable…

Baby Owl 'Owlivia' Brings Sudbury Neighbors Together Through Backyard Webcam BOSTON (CBS) – At first, they didn’t know what she was. A tiny ball of white-grey feathers making a noise somewhere between a chirp and a squawk. Dale Casto could see that the owlet had fallen about 70 feet from a nest on his Sudbury property. She was easy prey for any of the area’s predators. He rushed next door to the Greenfields’ house. READ MORE: I-Team: Are Mass Vaccination Sites Worth The Cost? Todd Greenfield is Dale’s “fix it” buddy. “Anytime Todd is in the yard, Dale comes out to help him,” Todd’s wife Sam explained. Todd nodded, adding, “He’s the most amazing neighbor.” A baby owl that fell to the ground in Sudbury. (WBZ-TV) Their friendship was about to become even richer. “He knows I have ladders and tools and whatnot. So I went and scoured our house for a s’mores drawer,” Todd said. Sam Greenfield had planned to use the old drawer as a tray from which to serve s’mores at their fire pit—an idea she had seen on Pinterest. But Todd had another idea. After filling the shallow drawer with leaves and pine branches and drilling it to the same tree the owlet fell from (reinforced with a bike rack from their garage) Todd was ready to carefully lift the bird into her new “nest.” He used gloves so that his skin didn’t make contact with the bird. The owl nest a family made in their Sudbury yard. (WBZ-TV) Even once she was secure in the nest, they were worried. What if the parents didn’t feed the owlet? They had to know what would happen.  Todd installed a doorbell camera above the nest and waited. Twenty-four hours later, the camera gave them a perfect view of a family reunion. Both parents returned to feed the baby. Every night since they have delivered all manner of meals—sometimes feeding her as many as five times a night. “I don’t know where it goes,” Todd laughed. “The owl is tiny. In some cases it’s two mice and a chipmunk. And then there’s other stuff all in the same night! We have learned a lot!” They named the baby bird Owlivia. Thanks to Sam’s posts online, a lot of other people are also learning Owlivia. Watching daily footage from the doorbell camera has given students, families, neighbors—even Mass Audubon—a window into the world of the wild baby animal. A Mass Audubon volunteer visited the neighbors and praised their handiwork on the nest. She checked Owlivia for broken bones and could see that the bird was healthy. Todd now sends her multiple videos a day. READ MORE: ‘That’s Our Lifeline’: Restaurants Prepare For Outdoor Dining On Moody Street In Waltham “They’re actually learning from this experience with another bird that fell—another owl that fell out of a nest in Lexington,” he said. The volunteer is also studying what Owlivia eats, how often she eats and her behaviors in the nest. Owlivia is thriving and growing up in front of an audience to which she is oblivious. “It’s unbelievable how people are connecting over this, “Sam said. To have such an adorable, interesting distraction — 14 months into a pandemic — is a gift. And not everyone is convinced Owlivia’s arrival in Dale’s yard is a coincidence. Eleanor, his wife of 58 years died of a stroke three weeks before the owlet fell on his property. At a time when his neighbors worried that he would be lonely, Dale is surrounded by people who stop by for a glimpse of the nest and want to talk about the owl. Sam believes it’s serendipity. “Truly,” Sam nods, “One of his son’s said yesterday, ‘I do feel like part of it is our mother watching over him.’ They believe it too.” Owlivia’s mother warms her in a nest. (WBZ-TV) Dale can see the nest from his upstairs window and checks it often. “It’s also giving him something to connect with his own grandchildren. So Todd sends him videos every morning and he (Dale) sends them out. So that connection is also really sweet,” Dale said. Like anyone who has watched a baby grow up, the joy is bittersweet. Mass Audubon estimates that owlets fly from the nest 40-50 days after birth. If Owlivia was three weeks old when she fell on April 6, she is on schedule to fly any day. Just thinking about it makes Sam a little sad. “It’s like your kids going off to college,” Sam said. BOSTON — State police say they were called to the Massachusetts Turnpike because a man was clinging to the hood of a moving SUV in an apparent road rage episode, some of which was caught on video.
Massachusetts State Police responded to Interstate 90 westbound in Weston on Friday, where witnesses had gotten the SUV to stop.
Police say that 37-year-old Mark Fitzgerald and 65-year-old Richard Kamrowski got into a minor crash, and that Kamrowski got onto Fitzgerald’s SUV.
Police say Fitzgerald travelled at speeds as high as 70 miles per hour, stopping and accelerating when Kamrowski didn’t get off.
Fitzgerald, of Lynn, is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and other violations. Kamrowski, of Framingham, was charged with disorderly conduct.

Kamrowski told WBZ-TV he was trying to keep Fitzgerald from leaving the scene.
It’s unclear whether either man has a lawyer to speak for them. Neither was injured.

‘It Looked Like Armageddon’: 1 Dead After Gas Explosions, Fires
LAWRENCE (CBS) – One person is dead and dozens more were injured in a series of gas explosions and fires that damaged homes in three communities north of Boston Thursday afternoon.
A gas main was over-pressurized affecting customers in Lawrence, North Andover and Andover. Anyone who has gas service from Columbia Gas was told to leave their homes until further notice. Teams consisting of gas technicians, fire and police personnel were going door-to-door to make sure the gas is shut off to about 8,500 meters in homes and businesses. According to MEMA, 3,500 of those meters were checked overnight, but there is still no further information about the cause.

In a news conference Friday, Governor Baker urged anyone who’s allowed back in their homes to not turn on the gas themselves, but instead wait for the proper authorities to do it.
“Our thoughts are with the community. We are focused on providing as much support as possible to our customers,” Columbia Gas said in a tweet Friday morning.  “If you are a customer that has been affected in Merrimack Valley please call our dedicated customer service line 1-866-388-3239.”

In Lawrence, a young man was killed when a home exploded on Chickering Road. The Essex District Attorney says 18-year-old Leonel Rondon was inside an SUV in the driveway of the home when a chimney fell on it. Rondon was pronounced dead at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Power was shut off in large sections of the three communities as a precaution. Images from WBZ-TV’s Skyeye helicopter Thursday night showed huge areas of darkened neighborhoods, illuminated only by the lights of police cruisers, dispersed to keep the peace and direct traffic. Andover Police say the power will be out until at least 9 a.m. Saturday
According to MEMA Director Kurt Schwartz, emergency crews responded to between 60 and 80 fires, and three explosions within a very short time frame.
There were a total of 38 fires in Andover alone. All fires were extinguished by 6:45 p.m. At peak, 18 fires were burning at the same time.
Andover Fire Chief Michael Mansfield said he has not seen anything like this in his 39-year career.
“It looked like Armageddon, it really did,” Chief Mansfield said. “There were billows of smoke coming from Lawrence behind me, I could see plumes of smoke in front of me, within the town of Andover, it looked like an absolute war zone.”

Mansfield estimated it could be a week and a half before every home in Andover is deemed safe for return.
According to MEMA Director Kurt Schwartz, at least 25 people were treated for injuries. Lawrence General Hospital was treating 13 patients from the gas explosions. The injuries ranged from smoke inhalation to “traumatic blast injuries.”
It is still not clear what caused the explosions and fires. The Department of Public Utilities and MEMA from a state level, and the Department of Public Utilities and NTSB from the federal level, will be involved in the investigation.

WBZ-TV’s Cheryl Fiandaca reports that Columbia Gas was doing work in the area earlier on Thursday.
Governor Charlie Baker described the response by Columbia Gas as “adequate,” in a press conference Thursday night.
“There’s a lot more work that’s left to be done,” Gov. Baker said. “If you were to ask me to give a grade I think for all of this at this point it would be incomplete, there’s a lot more to do.”
Early Friday the governor said the immediate focus remained on ensuring public safety. Once that work is done, Baker said, “we’ll work with federal government and others to investigate how this occurred and to hold the appropriate parties accountable for their actions.”
Hours after the explosions, Columbia Gas issued a statement saying, “The first priority for our crews at the scene is to ensure the safety of our customers and the community by supporting first responders and completing safety checks on our system and in the surrounding area.”

The FBI was also on scene Thursday. “We are coordinating with our law enforcement partners as expected and personnel are on scene, as we normally would be in a situation like this to assess the situation,” the FBI said in a statement.
All off-ramps on I-495 from Exits 41 through 45 in the area remain closed early Friday morning. On-ramps remained open to allow evacuations. MBTA service in the area was also impacted. The Haverhill Line commuter rail will only run between Reading and North Station on Friday. Buses will run from Haverhill and Bradford to Woburn.
School was canceled in Lawrence, Andover and North Andover on Friday.
