Extracurricular, An Analysis

Oh Ji-soo and Bae Gyu-ri

You know the story. You’ve heard it before, right?

Boy meets girl.

Girl finds out that boy is running a side protection business for prostitutes.

Girl decides to blackmail boy into letting her join his business.

Classic high school criminal shenanigans ensue leading them into more dangerous situations where they are forced to make desperate decisions to stay alive.

Oh, and they fall in love along the way.

Oh? You haven’t heard this one before? Then let me introduce you to this delightful kdrama called Extracurricular.

I watched this one while waiting for the newest Hometown Cha Cha Cha episodes to drop and ended up binging the whole series in two days. There are many remarkable parts of this series: it’s a crime drama, first and foremost, that showcases high school teenagers caught in a cycle of violence and crime, abandoned by the society and adults that are supposed to be protecting them. There are no clear good guys and bad guys in this drama; everyone is cast in shades of grey. Our main leads, Oh Ji-soo and Bae Gyu-ri, run the prostitution business, and are both from broken family backgrounds. Their actions are morally questionable at best, but the top tier performances from Kim Dong Hee (you might remember him from Itaewon Class) and Park Ju Hyun make you cheer for them anyway. You want them to have a happy ending, despite the horrible things they do. The audience is always reminded that despite how clever they are in staying ahead, their actions have consequences, and they’re just high school kids. The drama never pulls it punches.

But, weirdly enough, it’s also a love story. And that’s the part the really sticks with me until now. (The chemistry between the main leads is absolute dynamite and I could watch ten episodes of them just verbally sparring with each other. They don’t even kiss. They’re that fantastic when together on screen.)

I’m writing this because this is undoubtedly one of my all time favorite kdramas and I have a lot of feelings about our main pairing, Ji-soo and Gyu-ri. I can’t call them a couple (wait, didn’t I just say they fall in love) because their relationship can’t be labelled simply as that. Think of it as something similar to the main leads in My Ahjussi. Two people who should have become soulmates, yet met at the wrong time.

This kdrama is not particularly happy, and while I do encourage people to watch this, I am warning that the subject matter is extremely dark. If you’re sensitive to scenes depicting sexual assault, graphic violence, or anything in that zip code you’ll want to steer clear.

Also, I’ll be diving into spoiler territory in this analysis. So if you want to go in clean, then stop reading here.

Still here? Awesome. Let’s dive deep into the messy, amazing pairing that is Oh Ji-soo and Bae Gyu-ri. First, let’s do a brief character background on our two main leads, starting with Ji-soo.

Oh Ji-soo is one half of our main pairing and this story starts with him. He lives by himself and has been essentially abandoned by his only parents; his father is a failed businessman who gambles whatever money he acquires on scams and his mother ran away. His apartment is small, sparse, but functional. He owns only a few outfits aside from his school uniform. The only unique item he owns is a pet hermit crab that he takes care of. His life outside of school is non-existent; he has no friends, no one to hang out with and do typical high school teenager activities with. He takes care of himself and lives only for himself and his “dream”: to graduate, attend college, get married, and have kids like a normal person.

But to do that, he needs a large amount of money. He has no other financial means to do so (his father is largely absent, as is his mother), so he decides, at some point, to start up this protection business for prostitutes. The drama doesn’t go into detail about the how and why he came to this conclusion that this was the best way to make a lot of money in a short amount of time, so you’ll have to suspend your disbelief from the get go. Considering the themes of the story (how youths abandoned by society tend to act out in extreme ways to make it in this world), it’s not hard to believe his desperation would drive him to make such a decision.

Ji-soo, despite his shady business, is actually a decent person. There’s a streak of humanity that exists inside him that refuses to go out, despite the increasingly dark and bleak events that start to overtake his life. He’s attached to his hermit crab, cares for his “employees” outside of them being tools to make him money, and doesn’t want to see anyone get hurt. He goes above and beyond what’s required to help out people at the risk of his own life (in particular, Gyu-ri, and we’ll get into that shortly).

What we learn from the first few episodes is that Oh Ji-soo is extremely smart and methodical in how he approaches his life. At school, he is known as a model student - quiet, top of the class in terms of grades, doesn’t draw any attention to himself, always follows along with what the teachers ask of him. Only his homeroom teacher, Mr. Cho, seems to consider his quiet style of existence to be concerning and tries to make him less socially awkward by pairing him up with another student in a new extracurricular club. This leads to the introduction of Bae Gyu-ri, Ji-soo’s longtime crush and future partner-in-crime.

Meet Bae Gyu-ri, the other half of our dynamic duo. Her introduction into the story kickstarts the entire plot, as one of her earliest actions leads to a domino effect that spells increasing doom and tragedy for our main leads. She messes with Ji-soo’s operation at a critical moment and she spends the rest of the drama doing her best to make up for the consequences that follow.

In my personal opinion, she is probably the best main female lead I’ve ever seen in a kdrama. Hands down, no other character exists (currently) that rivals her sheer cunning, wit, and badassery. Gyu-ri is Crazy, capital C, and is the chaos to Ji-soo’s control; the fire to his ice. Despite being the direct cause of half the events that happen to Ji-soo in the drama, he can’t help but need her because of what she offers. They make an incredible team. Her competitiveness, her need to win no matter the odds, helps them survive time and time again.

Gyu-ri is from the opposite end of the spectrum of Ji-soo; he’s dirt poor and she’s insanely rich (always nice to see a reversal of typical kdrama tropes). Her mother and father run a successful entertainment company. Gyu-ri is popular at school, friends with seemingly everybody, pretty, cheerful and gets along well with her teachers. Ji-soo, and the audience, believe from the beginning that she has the perfect life. It’s not hard to believe that she’s just involving herself in Ji-soo’s business because she’s bored and needs an outlet, at first.

We soon learn otherwise. Gyu-ri has more in common with Ji-soo than he initially realizes, in that they’re both trapped in circumstances beyond their control - it’s just that Gyu-ri’s cage is gilded, whereas his is not. Her parents are strict and have her life planned out for her, all without her consent or input, leaving her feeling frustrated and powerless despite her rich lifestyle. A suicide attempt hasn’t done much to change her parents attitude towards her, only serving to further their control over her life.

So, when she learns of Ji-soo’s operation she immediately seeks to angle her way into it. First, she tries to rip him off, believing that he’s an evil “pimp” and thus deserves it. But after spending some time with him, she changes her mind last second and decides to help him out instead.

And, now, let’s get into their relationship, which is one of the best (if not the best) aspect in the entire series.

I need to be upfront about something: the relationship between Ji-soo and Gyu-ri is not exactly healthy. I wouldn’t describe it as toxic - the circumstances surrounding them aren’t exactly the best environment to encourage open and honest communication - but it’s definitely not what should be considered ideal, especially for young adults, and especially for young adults who are dabbling in crime instead of studying.

So, why do I love them so much? If you’ve read some of my previous posts, you know that I loathe toxic relationships in kdramas, so I understand if you think I’m coming off as hypocritical here. Why do I like Oh Ji-soo and Bae Gyu-ri when I didn’t like, for example from recent history, (oh boy, here I go again on my Nevertheless BS) Park Jae-eon and Yu Na-bi?

First, Ji-soo and Gyu-ri are way cooler than Jae-eon and Na-bi ever could be. They run a criminal enterprise that involves having a high amount of intelligence, cunning, and daring to do so. Do Jae-eon and Na-bi run a criminal enterprise as a side business? No, they don’t, because they’re boring art students.

Secondly, Ji-soo and Gyu-ri actually progress in their relationship and change their views as they learn from each other. Now, granted, that progress isn’t towards becoming better versions of each other - quite the opposite. But at least they have progress. Jae-eon and Na-bi stayed in the same stupid cycle for the whole series and then decided that it was better staying that way as opposed to trying for something else.

Last, but certainly not least, Ji-soo and Gyu-ri are actually interesting to watch for me. The chemistry between Park Ju Hyun and Kim Dong Hee is explosive and they way they spar, exchange looks, and just generally exist around each other on screen is something I can watch forever. I’ve said this before but Han So Hee and Song Kang’s on screen chemistry, outside of their intimate scenes, really didn’t impress me.

Okay, back to Extracurricular. This relationship, man. It’s all I can think about (other than HomeCha’s Du-sik and Hye-jin, but that’s another post). Ji-soo and Gyu-ri are so good together.

I’ve noted before that Ji-soo is methodical in how he approaches his life; he plans out everything ahead, and rigs any situation as much as he can in his favor. It’s brilliant, but when a crisis happens, he doesn’t know how to deal with it effectively. He panics and flounders; becomes indecisive at a time when clear, decisive action is required.

Enter Gyu-ri. She quickly becomes the partner he never knew he needed. When there’s a situation, she becomes invaluable in her quick thinking and wit, coming up with solutions on the fly. It’s not perfect, but it keeps them just one small step ahead of whatever is coming their way.

The only thing preventing them from becoming unstoppable is the lack of communication and trust they have with each other. A lot of that has to do with how Gyu-ri entered Ji-soo’s business - she blackmailed him first, and, when that failed, she strong armed her way into getting him to accept her help. It’s implied in the drama that Ji-soo has had a crush on Gyu-ri for a while (since ninth grade, I believe) and in the first episode he actually gets the chance to spend time with her outside of school on a sort of quasi-date.

It goes sideways pretty quickly because of some shenanigans from his business, but not before she gets to know him and says some pretty touching words regarding his situation. Poor guy is head over heels - even after finding out that she’s the one blackmailing him, his feelings are only dampened, not extinguished. When he catches a glimpse of her family’s situation, he gains a deeper understanding of her and why she acts the way she does. Even more importantly, Ji-soo treats her the same after finding out this information which, to someone like Gyu-ri, means more than if he comforted her about it.

If you want to see a physical representation of how he feels, other than paying attention to his actions, you can see it in him keeping mementos from Gyu-ri. She has an interesting habit of folding bags into origami shapes and giving it to him. Even after the blackmail reveal, you can see that he continues to keep these in a container on his desk. It’s really cute that he keeps these, when it probably doesn’t even matter that much to Gyu-ri.

Towards the end of the drama, Ji-soo prepares to turn himself in to prevent Gyu-ri from being implicated in the crimes they committed. And it costs him almost everything to protect her. Ji-soo, the quiet, nerdy kid, puts himself on the line time and time again to protect Gyu-ri, knowing that it puts his life and his dream at risk to do so. And all for what? For some girl that he thinks doesn’t even like him in return?

Well, let’s talk about that. Because I’ve seen some comments that Gyu-ri was only using Ji-soo for her own selfish gain. And I can agree that was how it was at the beginning for her; she definitely was only interested in acquiring money, like Ji-soo was, in order to achieve her own goal of being free from her parents.

But, oh man, that is not what is motivating her at the end.

It’s actually pointed out relatively early by some of her friends that it’s obvious that she likes Ji-soo more than he likes her. Understandably Ji-soo is keeping her at arms length from him given the whole recent blackmailing, so it would make sense that it looks that way.

Further questioning reveals what she likes the most about him:

“It’s not like I’m crazy about him. He’s fun. And amusing. He’s smart. And there’s a certain charm he has. He also has a wolfish side to him. But he thinks he’s a puppy.”

But, as she gets to know Ji-soo better, you can certainly see that she starts to fall hard for him. As a cover story for why they hang out so much together during and after school, Gyu-ri states to everyone that they’re dating. The reactions across the school definitely imply that this is a shocking development, which means that Gyu-ri hasn’t dated anyone before. So why Ji-soo other than the reasons she herself states?

He challenges her, just as she challenges him. Gyu-ri may be the more dynamic, quick thinking of the pair but Ji-soo is every inch her intellectual equal - just in different ways. She doesn’t seem to be the type to be easily impressed, but you can tell that she’s definitely impressed by Ji-soo’s operation and how thoroughly set up it is. When Ji-soo is frustrated at the beginning by his setbacks, he blows up at another student (knocks him out in a crazy punch) and immediately walks over to Gyu-ri afterwards (who saw the whole thing) to inform her that she is now his partner in crime.

The look in her eyes, and the small smirk she has speaks volumes about her attraction to him in that scene. Smoldering.

And, oh yes, she’s prone to jealousy. Another classmate, Min-hee, gives Ji-soo a present out of the blue (it was supposed to be for her boyfriend, Ki-tae, but that’s another sub-plot) - all within view of Gyu-ri. It’s hilarious how she tries to brush it off. Later, for plot reasons, Ji-soo has to spend more time with Min-hee which only furthers Gyu-ri’s annoyance.

And her motivations stop being entirely about the money and more towards helping preserve the dream that she and Ji-soo share about being free. There’s a scene in episode 8 where it’s revealed that, due to a business partnership with a local gang (set up by none other than Gyu-ri herself in a desperate move), Ji-soo would have to drop out of school permanently to work on their behalf. Gyu-ri overhears this and, despite badly needing the gang’s help in sustaining their own business, immediately terminates the partnership.

All because it would interfere with Ji-soo’s dream.

Man, if that isn’t love.

In the following episode, Gyu-ri, and later on Ji-soo, is kidnapped by the same gang in retaliation for terminating their partnership. Ji-soo comes to her rescue but Gyu-ri is already almost free (again, she’s really, really badass) and is demanding that they bring Ji-soo to her instead of running for her life.

Surviving this latest attempt puts the two in a reflective, vulnerable mood and Gyu-ri asks Ji-soo why he keeps saving her. Ji-soo asks later on why she keeps risking her life to be with him. They don’t say the answer in words but in an almost kiss (yeah, you read that right - almost).

And then, if you aren’t already convinced, Ji-soo crosses his one last remaining line in an effort to keep Gyu-ri safe; he accidentally pushes a fellow classmate down some steps and, instead of helping her, leaves her to die after grabbing the evidence she has on him and Gyu-ri.

Extracurricular pulls off quite the magic trick here, hiding this well done love story in the middle of a serious crime drama.

The real tragedy is that Ji-soo thinks that Gyu-ri views this whole business, and by extension his life, as one big game. It’s something that she takes offense at, visibly becoming upset when he says that.

But even if that were true, he should be assured since Gyu-ri doesn’t like to lose.

As they hurtle towards the end and face up to the consequences of their actions, Ji-soo and Gyu-ri undoubtedly lose sight of their original goals and dreams. They do some fairly horrible things to stay alive and ahead of the police who are close on their trail. You can’t really blame them for doing what they did; in the face of a society that has abandoned them, what they’re doing is a logical outcome to gain what they want so desperately and deserve so much: the chance to be free to live like normal, care-free people.

I can’t say for certain that they achieve that. The drama is serious in consequences and, at the end, the net around them is drawing tighter and tighter. I won’t spoil the ending scene for you, because I highly encourage you watch this drama yourself but I will say this: Ji-soo and Gyu-ri seem stuck in an impossible situation with nowhere to go, and no one to help them, with a clock ticking down towards either death or discovery by the police.

But, all the same, I’m always the optimist. They’ve gotten through situations like this before and they can certainly do so again. Maybe not as bad as this one, but not too far out of their league. And, like I mentioned before, Gyu-ri doesn’t like to lose. Especially when it comes to Ji-soo.

Their relationship is truly dangerous, as Ji-soo himself notes. Them being together is the source of their problems; they’re too much alike now, as opposed to the beginning of the drama where he stated that they’re too different. Their love is the kind of love where both of them are willing to burn the whole world down if it means keeping each other safe.

I’m a real sucker for those kind of love stories. No one’s a hero here. They’re just kids in high school, doing the best with what they know.

Who are we to judge what is right and wrong? Especially when the one committing the acts are high school kids who don’t know any better and just want to save each other?

Do we have that right?

Do they really deserve that punishment? Shouldn’t we be pointing fingers at the society that forced them to act this way?

Extracurricular really makes you think about that. Is it really so outlandish and terrible what Ji-soo and Gyu-ri do to survive when the adults who are supposed to be protecting them, teaching them better, have failed in their duty?

Maybe they really did win at the end. Not so much in succeeding in their goals but in gaining something that not even regular people are likely to find - a partner, a soulmate, someone who will stand by you no matter what.

If you do watch the ending, and are not an optimist like I am, then all I can say is this: whatever happened, they were together at the end.

They were together.

Why? Why is life so unfair? This is what I get for focusing on school more than my love life. And also not seeing the signs. Seeing the signs that my long term boyfriend was cheating on me. I’m so stupid. How does someone not see the signs? I should just consider quitting on being in relationships. Because I always get cheated on. He also was a jerk though. He would say mean things to me sometimes though. Not to mention, he cheated on me with my best friend. I trusted her too. I knew she kinda had a thing for him, but I didn’t think that she would sleep with him. She was my best friend for a very long time. I can’t be friends with her anymore, after what she did. Anyways, I have to get to class. I’m mayoring in Psychology, I always loved the aspects of psychology. I also loved to help people that needed the help.

After my classes of the day finished, I went to the cafe so I could get some coffee; so I had the energy to do my homework later tonight. I love to drink coffee. It’s one of my favorite things. Yes, I’m weird. I know this already. When I’m sad, I watch romances. Mainly kdramas. There is a lot of weird things about me that a lot of people don’t like. During my free time I read books. When I don’t feel like doing anything, I sleep.

When it was my turn to take my order of coffee, I ordered a black coffee with extra sugar. I’m not a sugar fanatic, but I like a decent amount of sugar in my coffee. After I got my coffee, I went to take a seat. On my way to take a seat, I ran into a guy. Actually, let me rephrase it. He ran into me. I spilt my coffee causing it to spill all over me and the floor. He looked surprised about what just happened.

“Oh shit! I’m so sorry!” He said, as he grabbed some napkins that were ironically in his hands. He used the napkins to clean up the mess that was in the floor. A staff member came over to finish cleaning up the mess he made. As for someone that ruined my coffee, he was really nice.

The guy helped me get a new coffee and now we were sitting at a table, making an casual conversation. His name was apparently; spencer. And he was a “genius”. Spencer was a really nice guy. I mean, he paid for my coffee, after he killed it. So, he has a heart to some extent. At some point, we started taking about each other’s interests. He apparently knows how to speak Korean. Maybe he could watch kdramas with me.

I have only known spencer for 20 minutes, and I am slowly coming to the conclusion that he is my soulmate. What I have learned from the last 20 minutes of talking to him; is that he likes to read as much as me. Maybe even more than me. Spencer is apparently, like; 35 years old while I’m 22 years old. Spencer also works for the FBI. He didn’t tell me what he actually does though. It probably isn’t the most casual thing to talk about.

At some point spencer had to leave because he got a call from his job. “So that was work. I have to sadly leave.” Spencer said, with a sad expression on his face.

“It’s okay. I understand. We could always talk again another day when you’re not working if you’d like.” I told him, with a smile on my face.

“Alright. I’d like that. Would you mind giving me your phone number?” Spencer asked me, with a smile on his face.

“Of course. Here you go.” I said writing down my phone number on a piece of paper and giving it to him. After Spencer received the piece of paper with my phone number on it, he said goodbye and left so he could go to work.

I didn’t know Perfect men actually existed. He was the nicest mean I have ever Met. Spencer was easily my ideal type. I’m so stupid. I literally just met him. What the fuck? I can’t fall for him. Especially after what happened in my last relationship.

Anyways, after staying in the cafe while reading a book for a bit, I went home so I could sleep for a little bit. I always liked the sound of literally, nothing. I liked no noise. Well, except when I was hanging out with Maisie. I had known Maisie since I was very little.

Although we didn’t really have the same interests; like me and Spencer do. She was really; girly and outgoing. She was a social butterfly. Me, on the other hand was very quiet and didn’t talk to other people a lot. I really only talked to Maisie. Maisie was very ironically; my other half.

I try not to think about what happened between me and Maisie; but who the fuck sleeps with they’re best friends boyfriend and says it’s an accident? Well, apparently Maisie does.

At some point; I end up falling asleep while thinking about Maisie and our old memories of when we were little kids. As crazy as it sounds, Maisie was very shy when we were little kids. She would get very anxious when she had to interact with people she didn’t know. And now she is a cheater. She knew what would happen if I found out.

After I woke up, it was time to get up and get ready for some of my classes for the day. I decided to wear a purple sweater, jeans and a pair of old converse. I wear sweaters a lot. It’s kinda my thing. I also have body image issues. I don’t like wearing clothes that show my curves.

Eventually, I ate something to fill my stomach. I ate a bagel for breakfast. It wasn’t much but it was something. I never had a really big appetite if I’m being honest.

At some point, I was ready to go to my classes for the day. I left my house and got in my car so I could go to my classes. Oddly enough, today there was a lot of traffic. Hopefully not a bunch of traffic, so I’m not late for my 1st class of the day.

Eventually, I made it to my class on time. I was only a few minutes early. I almost forgot, Maisie is in this class. And she sits next to me. Fucking shit. I’m not going to be able to concentrate with her right next to me. Cause when I see her, I think of her betraying me. Betraying me and our long friendship.

A minute after I show up, she appears and takes a seat right next to me. She turns towards me, showing a guilty smile. She still feels guilty for sleeping with my ex-boyfriend. She passed me a note that says; can I talk to you after class? She wrote me a note because she knows I won’t verbally talk to her. She knows how upset I am about what she did.

Very soon, after that, our professor for the class shows up. So, I try to forget about Maisie and try to focus. As soon as our professor starts to teach, Maisie Focuses too. The Professor for this class was pretty nice, and wouldn’t really care if we were late, it just couldn’t be all the time. At least he wasn’t teaching much today.

Eventually, our class is over and I grab my stuff and leave. Maisie follows me, because she still wants to have a chat. “Hey, y/n can we talk?” She asked, walking right behind me. I didn’t answer. “Please? Can we please just talk?” She asked again.

“Fine. What do you want to talk about?” I said, with a bitter tone.

“I’m really really sorry about what happened. But at the same time; that was not what happened!” Maisie said, apparently explaining what actually happened.

“Yeah sure. Like it was not him having fucking sex with you. I’m not a fucking idiot Maisie.” I said, my tone becoming louder; almost loud enough to be considered yelling.

“I’m not saying that you’re an idiot! I’m just saying that is not what happened!” Maisie said, almost yelling at me too.

“I do not have time for this Maisie. I’m not going to continue to listen to you lie to me. Also, I have to get to class.” I said, walking away.

After walking away I got a text from Spencer saying; wanna hangout some time?

thoughts on ep 12 (true beauty)

it’s that time again, buckle up your seatbelts

nice things first - Triple S moment, beautiful and sad but once again overshadowed by haha time after where SuSeo share one braincell and I love them for it

Han SEOJUN!! MY SWEET BABY, i am so SO fed up with Seojun having to do everything in this goddamn drama but get nothing in return, his moment to talk about his feelings was cut short, he had to basically paint a neon sign for Suho to realize what’s the problem with Soojin and give him advice on his relationship (how is it possible that Seojun knows Jug’s problems better than Suho who is dating her), he once again proves his loyalty by being almost disgusted that Suho would ask him if he is going to tell Jug his feelings (Suho loses points here again with that “Are you over her yet?”), he had to confront the bullies and was on Soojin’s BS early on

and all that Seojun gets is to keep on pinning for a girl who never even glanced his way, takes everything he did for granted and can’t even act like a decent friend or classmate... every scene where he has to witness SuJug part of me dies...

continuing with Han Fam, at least queen Gowoon got to use a beautiful metaphor about flies to get through Jug’s bro’s thick head (boy needs to learn humility, time for him to get lessons)

one more beautiful thing - Suho actually knitting and Seojun already knowing how to knit like a pro (+ the whole “friend left behind” thing was funny)

now onto Soojin, she really acts like 10 years of friendship gives you a free pass on the girlfriend spot, Soojin and Seojun being put into the same category rubs me the wrong way for so many reasons, Soojin getting friendzoned was savage but necessary... even though smart man Suho did not think the consequences of his actions through ... the whole thing with Soojin being like “I like Jug too but not as much as you.” was such a dumb writing it made my eyes roll so far into my head ... Soojin was so cool and actually well written in the beginning, whatever they’re doing now is disappointing

now onto the probably most annoying thing, reality check did not hit yet. the bullying arc is still not OVER, we are again having scenes where they “almost” meet, even though Jug did stop them from bullying Hye Min, it does not result in development in any way? i just want her to stand up for herself, she has/had incredible support system but instead build all this on lies...

also what’s with all this Clark Kent we’re pulling here, make up hid the blemishes, we all still have eyes tho, the bully having almost an enlightment when this girl looks like Jug, sounds like Jug and has the same name???

coming back to Seojun with the bullies, him seeing Jug’s face is a nice thing because all the peeps that thought he would hate it can shut up, but again any hope for that ship shouldn’t even exist when we are talking about 4 eps until the end, why do we feed this disproportional love triangle?? there was never ever hope for it when you see how Jug acts towards him, when she tells him that spicy teokkbokki is his favorite dish i died inside, he was chugging water to save his life but again the topic of the conversation was Suho so her blinds were on

on a lighter note... how many bathroom scenes do we need in this kdrama? i feel like every episode has at least one where someone washes his hands and chaos ensues

Appearance- I am 18 turning 19 this year. I was born November 5,2002. I’m 5’5 with glasses. I have a few freckles and a mole under my left eye. I have brown wavy hair that goes down my back. I have the typical brown colored eyes. I like to wear comfortable clothes but I like to style them too. I also really like the dark oversized clothes. I’m Mexican-American so I have a tan skin color. Personality- I’m a ISTJ-T Scorpio. In school I do a decent job with my grades and I have a group friend of 3. I’m kind of like the mom of the group, but every now and then I have my childish acts and stuff. I would also say I’m the loudest. I tend to be really loud when talking or laugh which gets me in trouble sometimes. I like to put people first and rather hurt myself then hurt others. I tend to spend time alone and I tend to distant myself if I’m feeling a strong emotion. I don’t like telling people my problems cause I feel like a bother, but people come to me for advice. I hate but love deep conversations. I love them because I can finally tell people what I’m really feeling and can learn a lot about the other person, but since I don’t really like talking about what I feel, I can also hate them. I have pretty bad anxiety and i tend to let my insecurities get in the way. i hate crowded places. I hate when people underestimate me and I always want to prove them wrong. I’m also really competitive. I also kind of believe in revenge. If they deserve it, they deserve it. Another thing about me is that I do tend to fall easily but once I fall for someone I fall hard. I have a passion for writing, reading, and makeup. Especially makeup. Since my insecurities were always a big problem for me, I found myself getting into makeup a lot. I have huge trust issues and if a person betrayals my trust once, it will take a long time until I trust them again. Lastly, I am really sensitive, but I don’t show it. So when a person makes a mean remark and I laugh it off, it actually hurts me a lot. I will always remember what people say to me, especially if it hurt me in a way.

for the boyz, i feel like it would be juyeon! he's energetic when he wants to be, and of course likes to have some relaxing time with you. i don't see him as a book reader, but he'll definitely read to you when you're trying to go to bed or just want to wind down after a long day. since you said you wear oversized clothing, i feel like he always shares his clothes with you. he gives his hoodie to you and teases about how cute you look in it lol. whenever you're not in a good mood, he'll be there to cheer you up and make you laugh. yeon is constantly telling you how good you look because he means it. tbh, he seems like the type to not take his eyes off of you like ever 🥺 he also buys you things all the time even if you tell him to stop he doesn't care lmao. he wants to make his lover happy :))

lastly for txt i think you and soobin would do great together !! he's a pretty outgoing person and he carries a very relaxing aura around him. soobin wouldn't mind you cuddling up to him when you two are alone. he's not big on pda, but when you're alone he's constantly giving you cheek and forehead kisses. i also feel like he has a hard time communicating his feelings with people he loves, but he tries his best. he's definitely a member you can't miss because of his laughs and such. soobin loves joking with his s/o and he doesn't mind if you're loud or quiet :) he doesn't strike me as a picky person when it comes to who he likes. his heart wants what it wants !! he also seems a bit sensitive, so he understands what you feel like if you decide to talk to him about your feelings. binnies always there to comfort you and check in on you and i feel like that's his love language. he's also constantly sharing korean music with you and singing to you cause he knows you like music :) he's literally perfect pls 😭 hope you liked this one <3

prompt: a woman has been dating guy after guy but it never seems to work out. she doesn’t know she’s been dating the same dude, a shapeshifter who has fallen in love with her and is sure he’ll get it right this time. word count: 1,411

a/n: i went through a writing stump (or whatever) and i’ve been reading + watching Doctor Stranger (a good kdrama btw). anyways, i decided to post this first before any of my other series bc this one actually has a written and quite detailed plan, which the others lack. n e w ays i hope yalls like this :>

He was starting to feel like Jinyoung again after his fourth library visit that week. He even considered shifting back to the said version of himself just so that the people wouldn’t brand Yugyeom, his actual self, as a nerd like Jinyoung. However, he didn’t want you to accidentally see him as one of your exes and decide not to come back forever. He would then lose his initial purpose of going to the library: to see you again.

Unable to focus, he had shut his book with a sigh and left. He stayed outside for a while, hoping to catch you somewhere but it seemed like yet another day of failure. He trudged on from then without an exact destination in mind, his body itching to move after having had to stay still and decent while in the library.

His feet had taken him through the city and to the park he had always enjoyed going to.

His feet had also taken him to you.

“What brings you here, mister?” comes your slightly shocked voice. You were seated on the bench his past forms had always taken you to, and his heart began to ache from the familiarity of it all.

“This place is special to me,” he replies, walking slowly toward you. You move aside and give him space to sit down, and it feels weird for him that you’re the one doing it when it had been him (in another form of course) who first introduced this place and this bench to you.

“What a coincidence,” you say once he’s seated. “This place is special for me too.”

“May I ask why?” he suddenly goes, his heart racing at the moments he had shared with you here but in his different forms. He takes note of your confusion and realizes he’d still been too straightforward with his question. “I brought a girl I liked here once,” he shyly adds to ease the tension, “so coming here refreshes my sweet memories of her.”

“Oh,” you say, looking away and nodding your head, feeling awkward with his sharing. When you couldn’t take it anymore, you stand abruptly and ask, “Would you want me to treat you now?”

The two of you end up at the bar where you met Youngjae. It would have been double kill to sit in the same place so you were glad he chose a table across the room from it. You’ve received your orders and after some small talk, he tentatively reaches out to shake your hand and says, “My name is Yugyeom, by the way.”

“I’m (Y/N),” you say unsurely. The situation reminds you of your first meetings with the chic JB and the polite Jinyoung. No, you think as you shake his hand awkwardly, don’t do this to him. Those two boys are in the past and this man might just be your future.

On that mental note, you set aside any thoughts related to your exes and enjoy the time you were spending with this Yugyeom guy. You found he liked dancing and dandelions, and he found you liked history and singing.

He was tempted to make a comment on your singing based on his past experiences in a way Jackson would have done it – funny but still respectful. He caught himself just in time with the memory that his actual self had never heard you sing before.

Your little date ends with him laughing and walking with you to the bus stop. He stays with you until your bus comes and he cutely dances as he sends you off, waving at you once you looked at him again through the bus windows.

Maybe, you started to think, he would be the one.

‘eyyyyyy,’ read a message from an unknown number.

You set your bags down hurriedly and open the notification with furrowed brows. ‘Who is this?’

The reply was instant and it read, ‘yugyyyy :)) ’

‘Sorry, but how did you get my number?’

On the other side of the conversation, the male was freaking out. JB to Bambam knew your number by heart – it was a miracle that you didn’t change it – but Yugyeom wasn’t supposed to know yet.

‘You gave it to me, remember?’

He scrolls through his camera roll until he finds a picture of your number written on his arm and sends that to you, hoping you wouldn’t recognize it from the time you dated Mark. It had been a good four years since then, and he knew your memory wasn’t that good.

You oddly remember Mark from the picture though you weren’t quite sure why or how. You don’t really remember writing anything on Yugyeom but you knew your memories were never complete after drinking. You decide to stop pondering over the how and Mark because you’ve come to trust Yugyeom a bit, and he didn’t deserve to be connected to an ex of yours for no reason.

‘I must’ve forgotten,’ you quickly apologize, ‘The bath probably washed any drunk marker stains away.’

While Yugyeom composes his reply, he tries not to dwell too much on the bathing part. It was hard, though, for JB and Bambam had quite the experience with you in the bath.

‘iz okkkkkk!!! :D’ reads his reply. You smile at his return to texting informally. Though you haven’t known him long, you could hear his message and see his smile, which makes you smile as well. It lasts for a second before your brain made a connection of Yugyeom to Jackson, who had loved texting in the same way but with much more emojis.

You sigh.

‘Can I talk to you later?’

Yugyeom’s eyes widen at your message and he goes into a panic. Did he say something wrong? Wait, he couldn’t say anything wrong because it’s a text; so did he type something wrong? He reads through his texts again, scanning for any typo or words that could easily be misunderstood.

Meanwhile, you finish typing a reply and send it to him.

‘I have some things I need to unpack. Did some grocery and, well, I can’t just let them stay in the bags.’ It takes a moment for you to include another text promising to message him as soon as you’re done. He sends back a thumbs-up emoji and yet another one of those :D faces.

You set your phone down and begin to do as you’ve told him. As you sorted through your stuff and put things in their place, you can’t help but reminisce on your times with your exes. With the way you’ve been connecting them to Yugyeom every time he does something, one would think you weren’t over any of them, even if you were.

You think back to Mark (who was sweet), JB (who was quite enticing), Jackson (who was caring), Jinyoung (who was calm), Youngjae (who laughed a lot) and Bambam (who was courageous). You’ve found love in these six different people; when you were with them, you were happy. Now, you’ve met a guy who had exhibited all those traits in the short period of time you’ve known him.

Yugyeom was practically your ideal man, or at least your almost-ideal men blended into one. There was something in your heart for him, no doubt about it, but there was also fear.

Fear to love again.

Every time you think about romance, you remember you have six failed relationships with six men who all seemed to be perfect for you. You couldn’t trust yourself to be worthy of a man you wanted, so you always let go in the end. It’s happened again and again, and you’ve lost each of them one by one. Any of them could have been your soulmate, but you constantly choose to sever ties with them. They respect your decision until the end and you haven’t seen or contacted any of them since then.

You’re yanked from your thoughts when you hear your phone vibrate. You’ve finished sorting out your groceries and didn’t realize you’ve just been standing there idly, reminiscing.

‘r u done yet,’ his message reads, and you’re back to your thoughts. It pings twice more: ‘hurry up u turtle’ and followed by ‘the faster u finish the more time we have for our date.’

Your eyes linger on the last one. You didn’t plan a date.

‘a WHAT?’

‘a date milady!!,’ is his quick reply. ‘Text me your address and I’ll pick you up.’

Skam France 2.10 and 2.11 reaction

Skam France dropped two episodes last week, so I’m gonna put them together.

this is another angry recap so heads up if you’re not into those

Episode 10

Clip 1 - Mickael and Lisa are very loud

Right off the bat - worst birthday ever. Making it Manon’s birthday was a good way to adapt these scenes into a holiday setting, though.

Are they play-acting so Manon can hear, or is this supposed to be a conversation between them and they’re careless enough to be too loud?

Actually I think this is a real conversation, not a performance for Manon. I think Lisa is sincere and she’s genuinely forgotten Manon’s birthday. Also that she really thinks for a second they’ve got to celebrate the pope’s birthday.

Lisa saying she misses Manon is sweet. Pretty sure they’re not going to delve into this family relationship or anything but it’s nice especially considering Lisa seems quite cantankerous.

Lisa telling Mickael to open the door faster made me laugh for some reason. She doesn’t have time to prolong the drama.

This whole conversation is funny but poor Manon, she just wants to shut out the world.

Clip 2 - Mickael gets real

Manon’s actress continues to do a good job. She looks so tired and beaten down by everything.

Mickael and Lisa are both cute in their rendition of Happy Birthday! Lisa has so much more energy than Linn.

“We’re sorry to steal from your cupboards all the time and ruin your life like leeches from hell.” lmao I love Mickael.

I was apprehensive following the previous scene, because we got a funny conversation between Mickael and Lisa, but not the more serious and caring side of Mickael and the talk with Eskild that was in the original clip. I was worried because overall his character has felt less nurturing than Eskild and he hasn’t seemed to have as close of a bond with Manon - there were a few moments that were played more for humor than to indicate a strong relationship. It made me nervous that they were taking Mickael more in the direction of “gay comic relief” rather than showing his more substantial sides. So the fact they followed up the earlier conversation with Michael talking to Manon in a heavier way here was reassuring. We get to see his more caring side. He sympathizes with her and acknowledges how much he talks about his life but offers to listen as well. The actor is great and I hope they continue to give him the meatier material, especially in S3

I know he’s saying it because he’s worried, but telling a person with an eating disorder she has to eat entirety of her tray maybe isn’t the best advice? Though I doubt he knows about her ED.

Clip 3 - Charles shows up

I do think it makes it more random and less sense that she’d be like “go party with your friends, Charles” when it’s her own birthday. Or does he know that? He has to know that, didn’t he get her the cake? He’d probably see it on social media?

This is in my opinion the best Noorhelm scene of that relationship, and it almost was of Marles, too. Charles/William acts like a decent person, comes in semi-confrontational but gets his priorities straight when he sees that Manon/Noora is breaking down and panicking, and tries to calm her down and support her. The original scene of him lying down with Noora was genuinely touching and supportive.

They were on the right track and then they botched it. I have an anxiety disorder. I have had panic attacks. I know how scary they are. You don’t “help” someone with a panic attack by physically picking them and making them leave despite them crying at you they don’t want to go out. What the hell. Why would they add that?

I mean I feel like there’s some weird gender shit going on here, with Charles being the alpha male type and then Manon being the fragile woman and it’s OK for Charles to ignore what she’s saying because Charles Knows Best. Not to mention this is the show’s idea of a swoon-worthy moment. We gotta get the guy carrying the girl around like a little doll.

Lol, I even saw some weird justification of this moment along the lines of “Well, if she really didn’t want to go out, I’m sure he would have respected that.” She’s crying and telling him she doesn’t want to go out. What more does she have to do to get the message across? Does she have to physically fight him?

Clip 4 - Birthday cake

Well, the cake looks pretty, and at least they wrote in a new scene to acknowledge her birthday.

Also, don’t totally love that he took her phone away. I get it, he probably wants her to just chill, but in connection with everything else, it’s just another small way he’s jumping in and making decisions for her. I would not have been as annoyed if this wasn’t a pattern in their relationship or if this wasn’t immediately following a moment where Charles overrides Manon’s pleas on how to handle her own panic attack.

This scene of them on the rooftop felt like something out of a kdrama in terms of music and slow motion staring at each other. Or at least how I remember the kdramas I’ve seen.

I don’t get why he needed to take her to the rooftop other than the #aesthetic since he just carries her back to her room. I know it’s where their first date was, but she was freaking out and panicking when he tried to make her leave. I really can’t get over that! Whyyy did they need that moment?

Did Charles look at her phone? Sort of dilutes the impact of him not reading her Facebook messages.

He muted the volume on her computer at least.

Episode 11

Clip 1 - Charles writing

I guess Charles was up writing this article for a while since it’s like 5 in the morning.

Confession time: I’ve never really liked that William (and now Charles) wrote the article for her. I know it’s considered to be one of the better things he did for her but even when I was watching S2 for the first time, I was like 😕 “Can’t they give me something to like about him that I don’t have reservations about?” I don’t think this was a terrible horrible thing he did, and admittedly I am bringing personal feelings into this situation, but it’s just something that I would not be OK with if someone did it for me without telling me first. I would be really panicked and upset if someone did this to me even if they meant it to be a kindness. He wrote the article and submitted it without her consent. Her name is on it. That means she’ll be held accountable for whatever the article says. Consider that Manon and Charles have been disagreeing on tons of topics so far - in fact Charles’ ability to make Manon rethink her opinions is a point that has been explicitly made about their relationship. So when it comes to the article, how can you expect that Manon and Charles would agree on the same points? Someone can be well-intentioned and still say stuff that’s a bit clueless, or make a mistake, and then it’s Manon who would be responsible. This only works if you assume Charles was a great writer with the right opinions - it excuses the action based on the outcome, without considering if the action itself is appropriate. (Which, to be frank, is true of many actions in this season.)

I would’ve preferred if he’d written it and then shown it to her to get her approval before sending. (“But that would have ruined the surprise/she wouldn’t have agreed to send it” - uh, too bad? She should get a voice in this. I get that she’s dealing with serious anxiety, I know what that feels like. But lol, imagine the resulting anxiety if Charles had sent out the article and it had a bunch of errors or some questionable opinions in it and Manon was criticized for it.)

The best case scenario is that he just took her notes and compiled them into something cohesive, which was somewhat implied, but she didn’t have enough notes to make a long enough article without him injecting his own thoughts.

Clips 2 and 3 - Manon and her girls

Did Charles make her tea? Now that’s a nice gesture.

Charles is watching her sleep, just to bring in those true Edward Cullen vibes. Manon was right about this being Twilight!

Lmao, explain to me why she had to wear that tiny dress? That looks like something I’d have worn to a middle school dance when I still had braces. It’s not Norwegian Constitution Day where the girls are going to be dressed up. It’s Manon’s birthday - she can dress however the hell she wants. She doesn’t have to dress up, she could wear her normal clothes. She could roll over to the party in sweats and a nacho cheese-stained T-shirt.

The music and imagery in the last two clips has been getting super soap opera-ish.

And when Manon shows up, the other girls are wearing their normal clothes, jeans and comfy clothes. Again, why did Manon need the dress?

Heh, how much did they pay for the rights to sing Happy Birthday? Or is it only in the US that you have to cough up a pretty penny to use it on TV?

I looked it up and apparently the song was officially recognized to be in the public domain in 2016! Good to know.

The girls are very cute performing Happy Birthday, though. Love the placement of the birthday hats at jaunty angles.

I’m not really qualified to talk about this as a non-Norwegian but I’ve read a bit about the patriotic themes in S2, and how it’s fitting that Noora tells the girls on Constitution Day (how living in a free, democratic country means you have to believe the law will protect you from assholes like Niko) and that ties in to the overall motifs of the season, and so that’s obviously lost here. It’s a missed opportunity, especially with the article. I think if they tried harder they could have written, you know ... something that related more to this adaptation and French youth, instead of repeating a speech that specifically about Norwegian culture. That’s the bare minimum, my dudes.

Like when Daphne says they need to go to the police because they’re in France and the law will protect them ... I mean, sure, but it’s just one of those things that lacks the thematic relevance of the original as it’s not a national holiday at the time.

(They’re going to do 21:21 for S3 without any changes, aren’t they? Goddammit. I will believe them that they’re changing the storyline when I see it and not just hear it.)

A minor nitpick: I also feel like it’s kinda odd to read her article aloud? It made sense with Noora since it related to the holiday they were celebrating and could fit into their festivities but this is just a random article. In that case I’d find it weird if my friends just started reading something I’d written out loud. I mean it’s one thing to congratulate her for a job well done but IDK, felt out of place.

But Emma only gets a few lines in, so thankfully we didn’t have to hear the whole thing awkwardly re-purposed for this remake.

Poor Manon with tears in her eyes. Her acting continues to be very good. Manon is more openly emotional and sad than Noora, who seems more like she freezes or shuts down or tries to close herself off.

Loved to see Daphne be at the forefront of taking Manon to the hospital and supporting her while they’re there.

Clip 4 - Justice

Nico is such a rat.

Also his ass is dumb.

But that’s no surprise.

Manon is more no nonsense and less playing with Nico than Noora was.

Actually I preferred that they cut out the line about not dropping the soap and had her throw her drink in his face instead, good job, Manon! That was satisfying.

Clip 5 - The point of no return

So. This is the part when watching the original series where I knew I could never like William or Noorhelm.

I’m going to go into a personal tangent, skip if you want. I can’t remember if I’ve mentioned how I got into Skam in one of these recaps so my apologies if I’m repeating the story.

I discovered Skam completely randomly during S3, via a YouTube recommendation. Of all things, strangely it was because I had watched a preview for the show Eyewitness, which was an American remake of a Norwegian show about two boys who witness some murders while making out in the woods. I enjoy crime stories/mysteries and the premise sounded intriguing, so I watched the first 10 minutes of the pilot that the network had put on YouTube as a teaser, and then some interviews talking about the show. Eyewitness turned out to not to be my thing and I didn’t watch more than a few episodes, but because I’d watched it, YouTube started recommending me clips from other shows with gay couples, including Skam. One night I was bored and decided to finally click on one of the Skam clips. I was hooked right away, impressed by the writing, directing, acting, and chemistry.

This was still really early in Skam’s viral spread during the fall/winter of 2016. There wasn’t nearly the amount of information and organized how-to-watch-Skam guides available in English at this point. I learned about the social media concept and real-time distribution of the show from reading the YouTube comments. The first clip I got to watch in real time was the pool scene. If you were there at the time, you might remember the 10-day hiatus between episodes 5 and 6. That was when I decided to watch seasons 1 and 2. Before that point, I had not heard a single bad thing about Noorhelm, William, or S2. In fact, I only heard overwhelming praise from the YouTube comments - people commenting that they missed William, encouraging people to watch the previous seasons and singling out S2 as an amazing storyline (and a number of people saying S1 was boring but to stick it out to S2), telling people Noora and William’s relationship was fantastic. I mention this because for some reason, certain fans are under the impression that people decided to randomly hate S2/Noorhelm/William based on opinions they read on Tumblr and it’s only bandwagon hate. So this is just to say - I did not go into S2 with any negative expectations. I wouldn’t even say I was hyping it too much in my mind so that I was bound to be disappointed. I just expected it to be decent television.

I watched S1 in like a day and loved it. I especially admired how all of the characters had both good and bad sides, and how the characters who easily could have been demonized, like Ingrid and Iben, were made into human and sympathetic figures by the season’s end. Did not love William’s behavior at all, thought he was a creep, but hey, he apologized to Vilde at the end of the season! That must be the character development I saw people mention in the comments! And so I reasoned that S2 would redeem William and manage to sell me on Noora/William. It wasn’t my preferred storyline but I loved S1 and I loved what had been released of S3 so far, so they could probably make me enjoy it, right? And besides, S1 had been pretty good in a lot of ways about sexism and gender roles, I trusted the show to continue that into S2.

So I started S2. And I saw William text Noora even when she’d rejected him. Okay, I thought, not a great start, but it’s the beginning of the season. Surely this behavior will be addressed, and he has plenty of time to change his attitude. And I saw William use Vilde in order to finally get Noora on that date. Yikes, I thought, I thought he was supposed to get better? This is textbook male entitlement. I didn’t feel OK with his behavior.

But OK, we’re only on episode 2! So much time to turn it around! And then we learned that William apologized to Vilde in exchange for a date with Noora. Errrr, that makes his apology a lot less satisfying and much more self-serving, I thought. And then I watched William take Noora on a date, and Noora confront William with his shitty behavior toward her and Vilde, and to my great bafflement, I saw William not express regret for his actions, but instead justify his actions not once, but repeatedly, with reasons that were flimsy at best and appalling at worst. I saw Noora tell William he had manipulated her in order to get her on that date and William deny it and turn it back on Noora. The scene made me furious. At that moment I hated William even more than I’d disliked him in S1 - because S1 was supposed to show him at his worst and ended with a moment of him displaying some self-improvement. Why the fresh hell would we then get this scene that effectively erased that character growth in order to show how selfish his motivations really were? I hated that scene. Hated hated hated it.

We were still early in the season, though. And episode 3 had admittedly a nice scene of Noora and William hanging out together - it was a nice scene because Noora was so cute, though, not because of much to do with William, and marred by William saying some misogynistic crap and then not owning up to it when called on it. But all right. It was progress.

Throughout the season, however, there was a pattern, where there would be a moment where William seemed decent for a fraction of a second, only to show his ass and do something I found obnoxious, entitled, or awful shortly afterwards. The midseason peak was him bashing a bottle over a dude’s head, justifying it, and belittling Noora for not understanding his Great and Important motivations for bashing a bottle over the guy’s head. This was followed by a scene I found horrific in which the show’s designated voice of reason told Noora that she needed to understand why her boyfriend bashed a bottle over a guy’s head, or else it was unreasonable and just like how war begins or some shit like that, in response to Noora’s objections to her boyfriend being violent. Viewing this scene was deeply surreal, as I was aware that this was the voice of the writer telling me why I should like William or why it was wrong for me to dislike William. The scene’s message made no sense in context.

At this point I had realized I probably wasn’t going to like William - in addition to his crappy behavior and attitude, he wasn’t written in a particularly compelling or 3D way, and the performance wasn’t charismatic enough to hold my interest (although I want to stress that it wasn’t the deal-breaker and I could tolerate mediocre acting for a well-written complex character). Yet I held out a little bit of hope that there would be an 11th hour revelation or redemption arc where we could see how much William had grown and the sexism and male entitlement that had been threaded throughout the season would be addressed properly. We got William calming down Noora from anxiety in what I thought was a genuinely lovely scene. I didn’t much care for him writing the article but it wasn’t something I hated him for. For a moment, things seemed like they might turn around.

And then, we came to this clip. The point of no return.

A scene in which William gets in Noora’s face, towers over her, doesn’t hear her out, shakes her off and leaves her crying in the middle of the schoolyard.

That would be bad enough as it is, though I can maybe understand his reaction in the heat of the moment. Maybe. But it wasn’t until I read the text messages afterwards that I was well and truly done. Noora texts William like an hour after this scene happens. She explicitly says that if anything happened between her and Niko, it would have been assault, she blacked out, and she’s pressed charges against Niko. And William ignored her for days afterwards.

This is so unbelievably cruel that it killed any hope I had for this storyline, it killed any possibility that I could like his character or root for this relationship. He knows she might have been raped and he ignores her when she is pleading for him to talk to her. He doesn’t reach out to her on his own, either; it takes Noora tracking him down and demanding his attention. I don’t remember him ever specifically apologizing for this behavior (if he did and I forgot about it, feel free to remind me). He apologizes for Niko. Not for himself.

Imagine Noora, who still thinks she may have been assaulted, who is still dealing with the trauma, having to also deal with the boyfriend she loves abandoning her and shutting her out. Imagine how tender William was with her earlier in the episode as he saw she was breaking down, and how it feels when he withdraws that tenderness after he finds out the reason why she was breaking down in the first place.

Let’s not even get into the real-life context of this scene, and how rape victims are often treated like dirt by friends, family, and romantic partners after they come forward about their assault. Let’s just mention that rape victims fear their loved ones won’t believe them, will blame them, or reject them, to the point where it’s a huge factor in why they don’t come forward, and that what happens with Noora here when William leaves is the embodiment of that fear.

It’s not just that William has flaws. Everyone on this show has flaws. It’s the way his flaws are handled. There is too much baggage with his character in terms of real-life sexism and gender roles, too little remorse and empathy from the character himself, that it’s beyond what I can enjoy in a fictional love interest.

“We don’t know what Niko may have told him.” That’s true, and I did consider that at the time. But you know what? William knows Niko is a creep. If Niko made any kinds of threats toward Noora, if there was any way he misled William other than just saying Noora was a slut who threw herself at him or anything we could have predicted knowing what we’ve seen from Niko, we needed to hear about it once the situation had been cleared up. Julie needed to have William explain so we know he at least had an understandable, non-self-centered motivation for reacting the way he did.

“William was just hurt/didn’t know how to deal.” I cannot stress how much I don’t give a shit about how William was so hurt compared to how Noora must feel in this situation. Noora told him rape may have happened. Why in the world would I prioritize William’s feelings over the feelings of a sexual assault victim in relation to her own potential rape?

Fuck William. Fuck Charles. Fuck this narrative that is constantly putting a guy’s boner feels and manpain above the female lead’s agency, rational concerns, and mental health. Fuck this narrative that is constantly encouraging us to empathize and understand an entitled dude’s emotions and actions, including sexism and violence, while the same entitled dude shows little empathy or understanding for a potential rape victim, a girl whose self-image was damaged by him telling her she wasn’t attractive enough, or a girl who rejects him romantically. Fuck the double standards of women having to understand and empathize with men when they are behaving like assholes but men not having to empathize or show compassion to women, including when they are victimized, by putting aside their own feelings for a goddamn minute.

Anyway, back to the Skam France clip.

I was willing to give Marles a chance in the hopes that they would rewrite the worst parts of this relationship, but instead it’s like they’ve double down on Charles’ domineering bullshit and it makes me so angry. That’s really all I have to say.

i’m sorry but this fetishizing thing is getting wayy out of hand. on one side, we have some korean rpers become incredibly offended about “krp” being a tag and using anyone in the korean industry as a fc. the reason this tag exists is to filter out other types of rps. If you type in “rp” in the tumblr search bar, the first things that pop up are either indie rp blogs OR westernized rp groups ( and the occasional harry potter cosplayer, anime rper, etc ).

that being said, there are many rps that are being hidden within the shadows. & if you look at the krp tags with the many krp directories, most are tagged “rp” AND “krp” for those that are specifically looking for a directory that accepts fcs of asian decent that work in the entertainment industry. AND while we’re on the topic of truth, many do not want to rp with people of asian decent in most western roleplays. in fact, some even make it a race thing, and focus nothing on the character.

yes, this is only to some ( for those that end up complaining later about something I wrote ) before we even get to the topic of fetishes.

now, i’m not korean, but i am a poc and when i see someone using a poc fc, i applaud them simply because people are going out of their comfort zone to rp a poc and they might possibly get it all wrong, but it’s not something to stress over.

now, i’m not attacking someone specifically, but i’m going to take the blogger that has been shared on this blog to disprove a lot of what they said. ( i’ll send in some receipts as well if need be. )

also, while we’re at it, what about the western faceclaims? aren’t they fetishized too? take kylie jenner, for example. the majority of the rps that have a kylie jenner faceclaim are usually those that use her for smut and aesthetic purposes. the girl is gorgeous, no denying that, but she is fetishized nevertheless and she’s not the only one. what about ariana grande? justin bieber? jensen ackles? gigi hadid? harry fucking styles? or even nina dobrev?

let’s move on to our next point before i get nasty.

reblogging gifsets of kpop idols you like or kdramas you want to watch and tagging it as ‘omg my muse would definitely have a crush on this person’ is the most shallow, obvious form of yellow fever i’ve ever seen. whether your muse would have a crush on this idol or actor is not even relevant to the blog, it’s relevant to you, the mun, who sees a pretty korean face and decides that it fits the ‘aesthetic’ of your blog.

i’m sorry, but how can you make such a generalized statement? what if the mun that has reblogged the set of gifsets know about the character portrayed in these korean dramas? and honestly, as humanswe are just naturally attracted to others that are better looking ( it’s called natural selection ). and I’m livid because how do you know what their character wants and doesn’t want? how do you know what attracts them?if you have a mind reader, please, by all means, let me know since you know much about the mind of another mun.

and why do you constantly treat korean people like fictional characters you can just fuck around with? does it not strike you as weird to write aus of real people? they’re not even ocs, you just take the idol, their name, their age, their face, and then change everything else around them. these people are not characters, they’re real life entertainers and you treat them like fictional characters, like accessories. writing aus of fictional characters comes from the sentiment of wanting to create something new based on what’s already given of a person who isnt real. it’s fetishizing, it’s dehumanizing, and it’s so painfully uncomfortable to see as a korean person. and it’s not in the same vein as writing an oc and having a faceclaim for them because when you retain the name and ‘character’ of the faceclaim, you’re writing this idol, not an oc, as if the fc werent people. i’ve never seen a ‘benedict cumberbatch au rp blog’ or a ‘tom hiddleston rp blog’ so why is this such a common occurrence to korean celebrities?

so then stop rp. stop every roleplay out there since this is incredibly demoralizing and inhumane. every damn faceclaim in the roleplay world is demoralizing in your definition. roleplay was meant to be fun, meant to be a release from the real world to be created in a fun and safeenvironment.

first off rest in peace karen i thought you were supposed to be good since you play so much but.. i suppose the mighty power of the chicken wing is not a force in tumblr survivor. anywho, so we switched like everyone expected but for some reason everyone thought it was a fun idea to freak out and be like "omg is it merge???" I'm both so happy and scared about this swap. BLESS ULAWA BEING GONE. THAT WAS THE WORST TRIBE. IT DOESN'T DESERVE TO EXIST. But yeah, a few people came to me and were like you carried that tribe and are amazing, and as nice as that is, YOU DON'T WANNA HEAR IT ON SURVIVOR. Cause now I have a huge target on my back for being a "challenge icon". I do not trust Daisy or Aro at all either so I'm worried they will gun for me, but they are both on the other tribe so that's a plus... Maybe, this one world thing doesn't help me there. Now I have to catch up with Jacob, and the rest of the alliance and see where we all stand. I'm trying to set something up with Johnny as well cause we sort of clicked at the start and I need people.

Hi MTV welcome to my own private corner of Hell. Seriously I guess my burning desire for some action really warranted this swap that put me in a terrible ass position. I love the One World beach because I can wave to literally every single person I was working with as they wear their Makira buffs with pride and I am stuck with all Rookies and Zak! The only people I know are Zak and Jacob, and Zak threw Daisy's name out and Jacob says he trusts Daisy so I can't even wrangle all my loose allies to form a little alliance. I'm just going to use my social game to earn favor with people like Willow and Allie so that I can maybe survive juuuuuust long enough to make it to the merge and reconnect with my homies. I'm sort of praying for a miracle, but I'm also going to do whatever I can to survive, and if that means throwing Jacob or Zak under the bus then so be it. I am scrambling like eggs in the morning. Hopefully I can convince people to target Aro for his wishy washy nature and because I have planted the seed that he has an idol, and honestly maybe he does, so I smell a blindside coming up, but if they're not willing to budge then I could be a dead boy walken.

Dana mom doesnt approve of the act of sending nudes but like I don't spread em like seeds in a pumpkin patch (like this swap is doing w my alliance tbqh) or anything not everyone gets to see the goods

Daisy has an idol, and is trying to get people to think aro has the idol bc he made up a lie about a fake idol that he doesn't have, which saved his ass a few rounds back, and Jacob and Allie are saying Aro is sketchy. NOW thats not what I like hearing because Aro is my husband and all, so automatically my Worry Senses are tingling as they usually are it would seem. What I'm tryna do is scrape together a me/willow/aro/Matt majority (since allie apparently doesn't trust aro so I can't trust her) but I suck at approaching people so it sucks that dana and Mitchell aren't on my tribe to help me :( but get for being the least experienced vet in tumblr left in this game I think I'm in a moderately decent position

Well Day 2 of NuNuTemoana is quite interesting, I'm starting to create scenarios that will hopefully put me in a good situation. A) NuNuMakira will throw the challenge and vote out Luca or LA and B) I create an alliance with Willow and Allie and we become the swing votes between Jacob/Daisy and Zak/Aro and if Daisy or Aro have idols they're shooting their bullets at each other and I've got a bulletproof vest. Fingers crossed.

I'm gonna model the rest of my game after Cirie bc boy does she have me fucked up seven ways to Sunday right-about-now o'clock Also I'm not gonna be home again after tomorrow until May except for one day in between so this whole new tribe/quickly approaching merge thing is gonna get really sad for me when I randomly just disappear forever :)

The past few days have been a whirlwind. From uncovering that dirty business with Matt to this One World swap, I find myself in a tribe in which I'm not sure if I can stay safe. It hurts that I can't compete in this next immunity too. I trust Johnny/LA, but as far as the rest? Question marks all over. I like Mitchell a lot, still haven't talked with Dana much, I have no clue about Ryan/Lexi but Johnny says Lexi is tight with him. So I'm really not sure what happens if we lose an immunity here, and winning challenges might be my only shot to stay in the game. So what happens next? No clue.

So I've officially worked my way into an alliance with Allie and Willow, hopefully they're not playing me and we can actually work towards getting out Daisy or Aro. Now Mitchell wants me to get Daisy out so we can rope in Aro and Zak at the merge but I also have somewhat of a relationship with Jacob from nuTemoana and he seems to have a relationship with Daisy so I am hopefully safely in the middle of this tribe and will be deciding this vote, but there's also a large chance I'm gonna get squashed smack dab in the middle. I mean ideally we win immunity and the other tribe can get out LA or Luca which would be great. I need these rookie numbers thinned like the mints so that I have options if I'm in the merge. I have my Doofenshmirtz Evil Inc. Alliance which is Ryan, Mitchell, and Dana, I have nuTemoana which is Johnny, Jacob, Lex, and Ryan, and I have a possible alliance with Allie, Willow, and Mitchell. Preferably I wanna work with Mitchell because I trust him the most so far. But of course none of these numbers I'm running in my head matter if I can't make it until the merge which is crazy to me.

Well I couldn't get it done today and that's a little disheartening, I definitely feel like I could be in danger and when you have the chance to save yourself and don't do it it sucks. I guess now my focus is on playing this game for like the first time this season honestly, a lot of things are at stake in this tribal, there's idols there's alliances there's tribe swaps, there's beef in this game, and I feel like hopefully I can shift the attention towards Daisy vs. Aro, but there's also a lurking nuMakira alliance that might form and getting an Ulawa out wouldn't do anything in the long run but I need to play to make it so that I'm safe until tomorrow or else there won't even be a long run. I wanted to be in a position where I could run a marathon but instead I'm like running a relay race tribal to tribal. If I get rid of Daisy Jacob may lose trust in me and join a Makira alliance, but also maybe I'll just join the Makira alliance myself? I mean I told myself I would do what it takes to win, my obligations are to myself at this point, not Temoana not Makira, not Vets, but MESELF. Well who knows at this point what's gonna happen, hopefully my plan works.

The plan was in play, you were going to be gone, we had the numbers, and now you're on a tribe where it's minority veterans, so hopefully Allie and Willow aren't idiots, and they just take out Matt because he's kind of an arrogant prick, but I'm sure that something sketchy is going to happen, and they're going to take out a rookie, probably Aro or Daisy since apparently they're being sketchy motherfuckers. Grrrrrrrr Matt needs to stfu. I still have quotes of him talking about LA, so I might use that to my advantage, but we'll see how this goes for now. I'm not ready for merge and these unpredictable motherfuckers in Allie and Willow.... I have no idea where either of their heads are at. As for my tribe right now, I'm 99% sure that Lex, Ryan and I are in the driver's seat on this tribe, with Luca, LA, Mitchell and Dana all wanting to work with us. I wouldn't mind losing to get rid of Dana, because I really really really want her out, simply because I haven't spoken to her as much, and I'd prefer to have good relationships with everyone once we get to merge, and I don't want anyone to think about taking me out of this game because I don't have a good enough relationship with them, so we'll see for now. Ryan hinted this morning that he'd prefer Mitchell to go home over Dana, but I want Dana to go home, and I wanna keep my brolationship with Mitchell for as long as I can. This is just fuel for fire I can use against Ryan if I have to, to get Mitchell to trust me, since according to Ryan, Mitchell is obsessed with me.. I also won the challenge for my tribe single handedly because I'm the king of this game, and no one is on my level strategically, socially or physically if we're being honest. I just need to NOT be known as that big threat once I get to merge. Time to just pit people against each other and throw shit and sound dumb like I always do ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Fuck this is so nerve wracking. I hate that I'm at tribal again. And I've recently been really anxious about the fact that L.A. knows I have an idol, and just now I found out that a lot of people know that I have it. Which means L.A. has been telling people. Which also means that I'm kind of screwed. I want to get out Aro because I know how tricky he is and how terrible he is in challenges, but he has the idol and if he plays it I could very well be going home. Plus I'm realizing that I don't really have any solidified alliances with a lot of these people so I could easily be targeted, especially since they think I have an idol. Honestly part of me just wants to play it tonight and get rid of it and get it off my back. Or give it to someone. But if I give it to someone, then other people will still think I have it and I'll still be a target. I could try to split the votes, but that seems kind of aggressive and I don't want to make myself a target if I'm not one already. Ugh, fuck. I wish I had someone to talk this over with.

Whew I know I just submitted but I have so many thoughts right now. Aro seems to think things are gonna go along tribe lines and it's gonna be me and him as swing votes. Willow brought up Aro's name to me. I'm nervous that Willow maybe brought up his name to make me feel more secure about it, and maybe I'm the target. Maybe Aro is right and things are gonna go along past tribe lines but I don't really want to work with him. Maybe I could try to split the votes between me and Aro and I'll play my idol and get rid of it. That would be dumb though, right? I hate that we have so little time and that like, no one is online right now. It's so hard to plan. Jacob told me he cast his vote for Aro because he only had a couple minutes before he had to leave and he wouldn't be gone. So theres gonna be at least one vote for him. Unless everyone is lying to me. Fuck I'm so paranoid right now, but I don't know how to figure out if its just paranoia or if there's actually something there. Also I'm trying to seem invested in planning out the vote with Aro so that he doesn't think I'm targeting him, but he could also quote me to others and make them think I'm targeting them. So now it seems like I have Willow, Matt, Jacob, and Allie all voting for Aro with me. Aro wants to target a vet and apparently he's close with Zakriah which means we may want to divert Zakriah too so that he doesn't leak to Aro and have him play an idol. But now I'm worried by suggesting that we divert Zakriah I'm playing too aggressively. Ugh. Aro said he's gonna talk to the rookies and see who they would rather vote for, I told them I'm trying to divert him so that they're not confused or surprised that he says I wanna vote for a vet when I already targeted him. This is a lot to deal with, and we don't have a lot of time. Tbh this confessional is a clusterfuck of paranoia.

I think for the first time in Survivor history one of my plans is actually working, it seems that Daisy is totally sold that Aro is going and voting me and it's awesome if she ends up getting blindsided as intended. Jacob is getting two votes because he sucks and I want him to know he should be worried, he threw my name out, and he's untrustworthy, even after like I pretended like i was interested in his crush that he talks about at least once a day, it's almost more satisfying knowing that I can flip and get him out if I really wanted to. In fact I have my choice to vote Daisy, Aro, or Jacob, and if I'm not getting played that wold mean I've spun this terrible swap into a great spot for myself, and I love it. See what happens when I get a chance to really play?

Okay so I only really have 13 mins to type out a fuck ton of information. This vote is crazy, so much has happened and we only had a few hours to strategize for this tribal. Anyway originally me and Allie were thinking about voting Daisy bc she told LA she has an idol, but then LA sent screenshots of Aro's idol. So I was panicking for a moment bc I thought it was real, but I talked to people, and he was probably really desperate, so i think were sticking to voting out Aro. I'm just typing out the short version of what actually happened, bc I don't have a lot of time, but basically me and Allie are the swing votes and I hope everything goes as planned.

As we near tribal Im starting to get the teeniest glimmer of hope. Willow, Allie and Matt seems to be pretty interested in working with me. If it goes according to plan its going to be 3 votes Daisy, 2 votes Jacob and 2 votes me. However Im still about 80% sure that Im going to get blindsided tonight so fingers crossed
