About Karol G - the Woman who Rose to the Top of the Reggaeton World
Tumblr media
One artist that I have been listening to non-stop lately is a Latin artist who goes by the name of Karol G. You may have heard her name as she has become famous not only in Latin America but globally. Karol G is a Colombian artist of mainly the reggaeton, Latin trap and hip-hop genres. Reggaeton is defined as a music genre that blends Jamaican influences of reggae music with Latin American dance hall music and hip-hop influences. Throughout her career, Karol G has collaborated with many well-known artists in Latin America, but in the U.S. as well, which have helped boost her to the global status she maintains now.
Her first hit was “Ahora Me Llama” (Now He Calls Me) featuring Puerto Rican trap artist Bad Bunny in 2017. She continued to produce more hits such as “Culpables” (Guilty) in 2018 with Anuel AA, another famous trap artist like Bad Bunny. There were rumors about her dating Anuel after they released that song, so by the end of 2018, the two released a song together confirming their dating relationship to the public called “Secreto” (Secret) which was another success. The two had a “power couple” status commonly compared to Beyonce and Jay-Z’s level in Latin America. Karol G continued to release more hits such as “China” in 2019, which was a collaboration with Anuel AA, Daddy Yankee, Ozuna, and J Balvin - all who are popular Latin reggaeton/trap artists, “Tusa” (Heartbreak) with Nicki Minaj in 2019, “Bichota” (Bad B*tch) in 2020, “Provenza” (Provence) in 2021, and she featured in Becky G’s song “MAMIII” in 2022. To clarify, these are only some of her top hits which had charted the billboards and even won her Grammy Awards, Billboard Music Awards, etc.
As we can clearly see, Karol G did not fail to stay relevant in the music industry since her breakthrough in 2017, with a new release or feature every consecutive year. However she did not immediately start out in the limelight when she began pursuing her music career. Karol G’s real name is Carolina Giraldo Navarro and she was born and raised in Colombia. She was first recognized for her musical talents when she performed on the Colombian version of The X-Factor in her country when she was 14 years old, and a few years later, she had her first record contract with Colombian company Flamingo Records and Puerto Rican company Diamond Music, and by then she chose her artist name to be Karol G. She released a few songs from 2007 to 2010 but they were not very successful, so she continued to study music at the University of Antioquia in Colombia. Karol G then traveled to Universal Studios in Miami, Florida where she presented her project but was rejected to be signed for a record due to her gender. Karol comments about it in an interview with PAPER magazine, "About nine years ago, I went to Miami for the first time; my parents got me a meeting [with the label]. I presented my project,’ she says, ‘and they liked it. But they said I could maybe be a songwriter, but a woman making reggaeton? That wouldn't work.’”.
This is because reggaeton has always been a male-dominated genre so not many women have become popular in the genre, with a few exceptions like Dominican artist Natti Natasha, Mexican-American artist Becky G, and Puerto Rican artist Ivy Queen, who became famous in the early 2000s and is known as the “Queen of Reggaeton”. However, it can be safely said that there are many more mainstream male reggaeton artists, like the artists I had previously mentioned. Even the “King of Reggaeton”, Daddy Yankee, who you have probably heard of before, is more globally known than the “Queen of Reggaeton”. In fact, I even asked my friend, who was born and raised in Dominican Republic until he migrated to New Jersey at 16 years old, if he knew who Ivy Queen was, and he said he did not know her, but of course when I mentioned I was writing about "reggaeton", the first person he thought of was Daddy Yankee.
However Karol G was not deterred by the rejection and continued to perform wherever she could back in Colombia with the support of her father, but by 2014 she moved to New York to try to boost her career in America again. Karol G saw an advertisement for business administration classes on the subway, which helped her learn more about the industry. From that time until she released “Ahora Me Llama” (Now He Calls Me) with Bad Bunny in 2017, Karol G released some more songs, one of them called “Ricos Besos” (Sweet Kisses) which was a hit in Colombia, and she signed with Universal Music Latino. Karol G created a strong foundation for her career which can explain how she is flourishing now as a global reggaeton icon and did not end up as a “one-hit wonder”.
I personally admire Karol G a lot because she is a strong advocate for woman empowerment and breaking the misogynistic boundaries of the reggaeton genre, which she has demonstrated through her rise to the top of the reggaeton world with songs confidently embracing her femininity and sexuality.
youtube
From just looking at some of the lyrics from her breakthrough song “Ahora Me Llama” (Now He Calls Me), Karol G states, “Yo soy dueña de mi vida, a mí nadie me manda” (I am the owner of my life, no one controls me). Marty Preciado of NPR Music describes this song as, “A bass-heavy, unapologetic trap anthem to the power of femininity, soiled in hi-hats and heavy sub-bass, the song challenges hegemonic masculinity, singing about respect, love and sex-positive decisions… Karol G confidently states about the ownership, control and enjoyment of her life, femininity and sexuality.”
youtube
Another one of her biggest hits, “Tusa” (Heartbreak) became a global anthem for women, as the reggaeton song is about a woman trying to get over her ex and heal and to remind her to “know her worth”. The collaboration with Nicki Minaj, who has been globally known as the "Queen of Rap" for years and is never ashamed to express her sexuality and boost confidence in fellow women, makes the song an even more powerful piece of motivation to help women move on to bigger and better things.
youtube
Karol G’s song, “Bichota” (Bad B*tch) is another viral anthem of femininity where she created her own unique term from Puerto Rican word “bichote” which means “a powerful drug dealer”, to “a strong and empowered woman”. She explained further in an interview on the “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon, “I wanted to create a ‘bichota’ but its meaning is going to be: a bitch boss girl, powerful, great, incredible, doing her things by herself, you know?”.
youtube
The last track that I think really shows Karol G’s support for women is not a part of any of her albums, since she was the featured artist, but “MAMIII” by Becky G is a reggaeton track about female empowerment for ending a toxic relationship, which many women can relate to.
I think these four songs that I mentioned were really unique in the reggaeton genre because since it is such a male-dominated genre, there are not many reggaeton songs about women ending toxic relationships or female empowerment. In fact, it is a very common trend in reggaeton for male artists to over-sexualize and objectify women in their songs instead, so the fact that Karol G made all these four songs that basically diss men and motivate women into hits, shows that the genre is moving in a new direction.
Altogether, Karol G is such an inspiring icon for women, proving that she overcame barriers due to her gender by making a name for herself in a genre that has barely been touched by women. I think it is important to recognize that she is truly changing the industry through her consistent billboard chart-topping hits, her creation of “bichota”, a new female-empowering term, and just her overall loyal global fanbase. In fact, the same company that rejected Karol, Universal Studios, actually offered her a contract 7 years later because of her global status, so I think she is living proof that anything is possible with hard work and dedication.
I would like to end this blog post with a motivating quote that Karol G said in an interview with the LA Times, “For years, I heard that women do not do reggaeton. Reggaeton and urban music belong to men, but as a woman, you belong to men. Now women are on another level. We are well prepared to lead. We've earned it and we're going to fight for it”. Hopefully we can continue to see Karol G progress with even more hits and be able to break the boundaries of reggaeton with her large influence. If you would like to take a listen to some of Karol G's music, I have linked her Spotify playlist below!

The 2018 Relationship Age,Instagram,and more.
Firstly, thank you so much for reading this. I am used to journaling and this is my first time writing for public eyes, so enjoy!
Now to lets get straight to the point; the modern 2018 relationship. Do we believe its harder now than it was in the 1920's? Oh absolutely! I mean as a woman we’ve been exposed to propaganda our whole lives on the fairy tale where your fairy godmother blesses you with perfectly fitting, comfortable glass slippers(we all secretly prayed they would be the louboutins we all still dream about to this day) and we'd ride off into the sunset with prince charming and the end. Sorry ladies, never gonna happen! Why would we want it to be that way? We are the bad ass take no sh*t millennial's who swipe left if we think based on someones picture and 2 sentence bio we have a "connection". Sorry my tinder/grinder users, as basic as I just made it sound is truly how basic it is but this is a judgement free zone! But lets go down the list of the modern relationship of 2018.
YAS! Thank you fairy godmother!
Tumblr media
Age
As Aaliyah said, "Age ain't nothing but a number!" If you're 23 like me that song has been in your life as long as you can remember(if you haven't heard it pause your reading and play it now). So maybe that was drilled into our minds through sultry R&B or its just simply the truth. I'm leaning more towards the simple truth. In my personal relationship my boyfriend and I are 7 years apart. As time has gone on, I have realized that everyone around me is dating with a 7-10+ year gap between them and no one's complaint is ever "He's just too old." I will say though there is always an occasion when I'm calling or getting a call that says, "...like he's my dad or something!" I always question this part of things like is this just how men try and show they wear the pants, or do these men just want us to not repeat their previous mistakes because they are older than us? I think its a sprinkle of both, and for us modern day relationship doers, my best advice on age gaps is 1.) trust your partners knowledge 2.) trust your life experiences as well to asses situations for yourself 3.) always stress the necessity for reciprocity in decision making, that way you both wear the pants. To conclude this I think that in 2018 it's better to date for what YOU like and want, rather than feel like because your close in age it won't be as successful or because there is an age gap he has all the answers. Don't be afraid to take charge trust me, you don't want to go to sleep dreaming of your man struggling to get into a pair of skinny jeans(no? just me? okay.)  because your subconscious is telling you to make that decision.
Again, listen to the song if you haven't already!
Tumblr media
Instagram
I  planned to write this part last because it probably should be its own post, but I believe I can word it perfectly without over doing it so lets get into it people! Instagram is probably the most consistent social media platform I use currently, it has everything all on one app and I ask for nothing more. But I can admit it's created small issues in my relationship (truly small guys) and I mostly was the one with the issue. I grew up where dating meant you the put your anniversary date in your bio, posted every single picture you could with the sweetest caption from your favorite Drake song and you waited for all of your 900 followers to like it to show the world, you are in a relationship and a happy one. And then you date someone older than you and you realize, they don't give a f*ck about posting you let alone themselves on instagram.
Tumblr media
"wait so you're saying you don't have instagram?"
And then we all are Jaden Smith, thoroughly confused as to how another human can exist with this mindset. And now this guy is your boyfriend and your 4 months in passing all the holidays without getting posted and you're like whatever its just Instagram I am a mature young woman, I am confident in myself. But as I recently discussed with one of my best friends is that what we really need to be saying to ourselves? Deep down everyone wants validation which is why Instagram is so important, just 10 likes and you know you're on to something, but what does it mean in the modern 2018 relationship, when you're not getting your recognition? Well here's how I can answer that by telling you my word for word head on experience:
Me: So why don't you post me on your Instagram? Are you just not that guy, or is it because we are still new?
Him: No, 1.) its MY Instagram so I post whatever moves me and 2.) I don't want to post you because it's no ones business
Me: Oh okay.
Me in my head: SO YOU'RE TELLING ME THAT I AM A SECRET?! IS IT BECAUSE ALL THE GIRLS IN YOUR DMS WILL THEN STOP SENDING DMS? AM I UGL...Wait no, that's never the case. *continues to rant*
So as you could imagine it took me about 3 days to wrap my millennial mind around this concept, and I came to the conclusion of "What more can I really ask for?" I am with him almost everyday, we talk all day, and when we don't we usually know each others plan for the day. Did Instagram really have to define what we're doing? No. And so ladies and gentleman (because don't get it twisted ladies men are usually way more offended you aren't showing them off than you'd think) here's my advice for this part of the modern 2018 relationship 1.) Post whatever the f*ck you want, whenever you want but don't do it for validation Instagram was meant to entertain the user 2.)Older men may or may not like to post you but if their friends and family know who you are then no Instagram post can give you anymore validation than that. 3.)Don't sit on your words,if something makes you uncomfortable say something because 9 times out of 10 what we think isn't what it is. All in all we young millennial gals take way better photos anyway, so its probably best we do the posting.
And finally the more..
So guys we are nearing the end of this post, and again thank you SOOOOOOO much for reading this far. But lets finish this strong; 2018. The year where you can barely tell pop culture and political news apart, is also the year of so much LOVE. And sometimes it's going to be love our parents can't understand, and that doesn't mean their advice isn't valid or your friends advice isn't valid. I just believe this is also a time to figure love out for ourselves. Figure out what we really do and don't like, who we do and don't like. What are the things that motivate us individually to want to spend time with someone? These are things that take time and self care to learn but it also takes WORK. Yes, relationships are work and not always the fairy tales we think they should be and that is okay. To conclude this I will give you my most modern 2018 fairy tale moment in my own relationship.
Tumblr media
We actually laugh in bed like this over stand up jokes we try on one another before bed.
So if you know me you know Beyonce' is EVERYTHING I proudly stan for her and she put on the most epic amazing performance at Coachella this you (curse you but also bless you if you saw it live) and I was super bummed because I was working the day it was streaming completely missed the whole thing, so the next day I am sulking around watching everyone fan girl out and watching sad Instagram videos of the bits and pieces of this epic performance, my boyfriend who knows everything about anything on the internet is like, "Why are you watching it on Instagram I can just download it for you" I am still not trusting his computer smarts, "Like HD version not like someones phone like actual video?!" he's like, "Yeah." a few click clack patty whacks later he's like, " Here's the file when it's done it'll ding but if you want I am going to the roof when I come back I'll watch it with you." Now ladies this isn't the best story but understand not only did he get me Beyonce' but he wanted to watch it with me so now I am just reeling! Long story short, we watched Beyonce' cuddled up and thoroughly enjoyed it and that was my fairy tale. I want all of you reading this, skimming it, pretending to read to walk away with just this one thing; in 2018 no one but YOU can define what your relationship is and that is okay as long as it speaks to your character and serves YOU equally in happiness, and joy then do it, talk about what you do and don't like and remember that every fairy tale ends differently, and no fairy tale is the same.
Or maybe we do get to ride away into the sunset.

Consumer Guide / No.98 / American television, film and stage actress, Bernadette Quigley with Mark Watkins.
MW : What’s new?
BQ : Currently, work is sparse as most of my businesses have been shut down because of the COVID-19 pandemic. No films or television shows are being shot in NYC at this moment in time and most of my side businesses are on pause as well. This season’s gardening work didn’t happen at all (because NYC had not yet deemed gardening an essential service).
Thankfully, I have a few coaching (acting) clients I work with often and I had one job before this pandemic hit that I’m still working on - a press and radio campaign for Irish singer-songwriter Ultan Conlon’s beautiful new record, ‘There’s a Waltz’. It’s been gratifying to see reviewers agreeing with me that it’s Ultan’s finest record thus far!
MW : Tell me about your role in Law & Order...
BQ : Well, I had four Law & Order roles, actually. Two are on Law & Order: SVU and two are on the mothership Law & Order.
My first big role on SVU was of a victim, Jean Weston, on the season finale of their 2nd season, many moons ago. This character was a mother and wife from Oregon whose husband and son got stabbed to death by a serial killer – played by Richard Thompson.
I’ll never forget this role for many reasons but primarily it was a job where I discovered I could cry on cue. The director and producers decided they wanted to end the episode with a huge close up of my character, breaking down in the gallery in the courtroom. One of the producers shouted out, “Bernadette…can you cry on cue!?” I meekly replied, “Sure.” Next thing I hear was…”rolling….” and “ACTION”… I looked up, terrified I wouldn’t be able to summon up tears but imagined the hell my character went through and looked deeply into Chris Meloni’s eyes and …phew!...started to cry!
The Law & Order franchise has been a godsend for many actors. Not just financially, which it has and still is but for me, the experience I gained working on those shows led to a lot more television and film work over the years, so I’m forever grateful to creator/producer, Dick Wolf.
MW : What are your own views on law & order? Anything you’d like to see relaxed or tightened up on?
BQ : Feels very naïve and idealistic to say this, but I’d love to see major, police reform. Police brutality is despicable and out of control, especially in Black communities.
I believe we’re beginning to see the power of the Black Lives Matter movement resulting in some of these police officers losing their jobs and sometimes being arrested themselves for their unspeakable acts of violence, but I imagine we, as a nation, need to keep the pressure on. The police brutality simply has to stop. There has to be more consequences for those senseless deaths. There has to be better training, etc...
I’d also love to see major gun control in this country. I would love to see guns banned. Period. But that’s highly unrealistic as this country tragically has a major addiction to their gun culture. Perhaps someday we’ll have some common-sense gun control again such as background checks, and high-capacity magazine and semi-automatic assault weapon bans.
MW : What was it like working with Kenneth Branagh?
BQ : I suggested Kenneth’s play “Public Enemy” to the Irish Arts Center’s Artistic Director at the time, Nye Heron, and was emailing and talking with Kenneth’s assistant quite a lot before setting up a meeting with Kenneth and Nye.
I was flying high that I helped to secure the rights to his play. Kenneth then came to our first read-through, and he came back to see a preview or two. He was an absolute prince, kind, intelligent, caring, witty.
However, this success was so bittersweet because my dad died right before we opened the play, a performance I had dedicated to him before he died (because my dad loved Jimmy Cagney, and the main character of the play was obsessed with Cagney). The play got great reviews and we ran for five months. It was so difficult for me to fully appreciate the success of this show as I was mourning the most devastating loss of my life.
MW : Which "shelved" film appearance of yours should have seen the light of day?
BQ : There’s a provocative film I am in about a racial experiment that is under the radar called, “The Suspect” (2014), which stars Mekhi Phifer, Sterling K. Brown and William Sadler.
By the way, I am currently in three indie films that I’m psyched for the world to see: I play a lead role in “Darcy” which is available (worldwide) to stream on Herflix.com; “The Garden Left Behind” has just landed international distribution, so stay tuned for the release date! And finally, I have an interesting supporting role in a film called “Tahara” which had its world premiere at Slamdance in January and is slated for more film festivals.
MW : What makes a good film/TV critic? Can you name any?
BQ : One that doesn’t give the plot, or too much dialogue away. I often don’t read reviews of films, or television shows, I want to watch because I love going in – not being influenced by another’s opinion. But sometimes, I’ll read reviews afterwards to learn more about the evolution of a film or TV show. I often find myself agreeing with A.O.Scott’s (NY Times) film reviews.
MW : How do you usually prepare for an acting role, and has a character ever taken you over?
BQ : The first thing I do is read the script several times and see what the words are telling me about the character, and how other characters view that person. If it’s a period piece, I research the era or history surrounding the event in the play, or screenplay. Eventually, I forget my research, learn my words and hopefully let the character inhabit me emotionally, physically and psychologically, spiritually etc…and try my best to be fully present with the other actors I’m working with moment-to-moment. Every project is different.
Yes, there were times, I found it difficult to shut off the pain of a character after some performances. Two that come to mind are two intensely emotional theatre roles I performed at the Repertory of St. Louis, Elizabeth Proctor in “The Crucible”, and Agnes in “Bug”.
MW : Is performing on film different to TV as an acting discipline?
BQ : I think it all depends on the style of the film, or television show. With a TV show like Law & Order, it’s formulaic and heightened realism (acting style) and so one makes sure one knows every single word, and hits one’s marks, and if it calls for emoting then one must emote! Some films I’ve done are grittier-kitchen-sink realism. A very minimalistic style of acting.
MW : Has your song-writer husband ever penned a song for you?
BQ : Yes, many….Don (Rosler) primarily writes for and with other artists – on the John Margolis: Christine’s Refrigerator CD, there’s many tunes that speak to many moments within the course of our lives: the title track (altho’ the name was changed), “Scrap of Hope” (a pep talk to me when I was stuck at a temp job I hated), “Here’s Something You Don’t See Every Day” (a wedding reverie that literally started in Don’s mind when I fell asleep on his shoulder), and he wrote an exquisite lyric for Bobby McFerrin’s Grammy-nominated record VOCAbuLarieS, a song called “Brief Eternity”… where his words infuse my love for gardening: “Working in the garden has you... ...Breathing in the bloom and then you View the sunset view to move you Close to truly understanding Life and death but nothing ending Voices living on”…..
MW : Tell me about some of your favourite music...
BQ : My music tastes are pretty eclectic – besides all the indie artists I’ve done publicity for, I love so many styles of music from classical to folk to country but here’s some of my fave artists: Tom Waits, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Pink, Beyonce, Billie Holiday, Ani DiFranco, Ibeyi, Sinead O’Connor, Prince, Bjork, Leonard Cohen, Kacey Musgraves, K.D. Lang, Laura Mvula, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Billy Bragg, and Randy Newman, among many others.
MW : ...and your favourite films....
BQ : Ohhhhh-so-many faves but a few, in no particular order :
Portrait Of A Lady On Fire (2019)

Secrets & Lies (1996)

Annie Hall  (1977)
My Beautiful Laundrette (1985)
My Brilliant Career (1979)
And I also love documentaries and a ton of old movies from the 1930’s and 1940’s, such as The Lady Eve (1941).
MW : ...plus your favourite books....
BQ : I’m currently reading this years New York Times Bestseller American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins (it’s excellent!).
Some of my all-time faves are :
Of Human Bondage ~ W. Somerset Maugham (1915)
A Confederacy Of Dunces ~ John Kennedy Toole (1980)
Angela’s Ashes ~ Frank McCourt (1996)
The Grapes Of Wrath ~ John Steinbeck (1939)

Act One ~ Moss Hart (1959)
Born A Crime ~ Trevor Noah (2016)
Wild : From Lost To Found On The Pacific Crest Trail ~ Cheryl Strayed (2012)
MW : You enjoy gardening. How is yours designed and tended to?
BQ : I don’t have my very own garden. I live in NYC and dream of having a country house with a garden of my own one day!
This is the reason I started a side business of urban gardening. My dad was an extraordinary gardener and after he died, I started tending to my mother’s flower gardens. Then I found myself volunteering at a neighborhood garden and that led to me working in other people’s gardens. Primarily small back gardens and some rooftop or balcony gardens.
I specialize in flowers, shrubs and trees and love planting lots of perennials (flowers and plants) with annuals so there’s lots of varying blossoms of different heights and textures, throughout spring, summer and fall.
When possible, if space allows, I also love incorporating foot paths, rock walls, or other elements in gardens – art/birdbaths/benches/statues that might be a sweet focal point but primarily I love the combinations of plants, trees, shrubs and flowers to be the focal points.
MW : Recommend five flowers...that every good garden should have!
BQ : Daffodils - one of the first signs of spring! Muscari (aka grape hyacinths) – the color (blue) is gorgeous, as is the scent. Climbing roses – the beauty and romantic history of roses. Anemone Robustissima (late blooming perennial flower). Lady Ferns (okay not a flower, but I’m a fern freak and I love ferns of all kinds!, but Lady ferns in particular are stunning when they sit beside most flowers or surround trees).
MW : How opinionated are you on current events? Would you like to be more, or less opinionated?
BQ : I’m extremely opinionated on current events but find it difficult to find ways to communicate my thoughts without screaming angrily from the rooftops and then of course not being heard. There are those that say we have an obligation to try to talk sense into people whose viewpoints are much more extreme than one’s own (either extreme conservative or extreme liberal).
I’m very liberal but am more pragmatic when it comes to progress, not perfection, so I’m very happy to enthusiastically vote for someone like Joe Biden or in 2016, Hillary Clinton, but I honestly don’t know how to reach people whose minds are already made up – people who either continue to justify their support for the current racist/narcissist/sexist/pathological liar-in-chief, or that justify their “protest” vote by falsely equivocating both candidates as “the same” or “the lesser of two evils”.
So yeah, I offend people at times because yes, I’m judgmental when it comes to politics and I most definitely believe in the power of protests, but believe just as strongly in the collective power of one’s vote and it drives me insane when others don’t show up and vote for local elections, and national ones.
I find I do hold back on Facebook, not because I’m afraid to voice my opinions but because it becomes too much of a time suck for me.
MW : What character traits frustrate you?
BQ : Impatience (in myself). Aggression (in myself and others).
MW : What’s the kindest thing another person has done for you?
BQ : I find this question so complex to answer. There are so many inexplicable moments in my life, where I’ve been blown away by many seemingly small gestures or kind words from strangers. And professionally, I’ve been truly blessed to work with some top-notch directors that gave me the gift of encouraging me to fully trust my artistic instincts.
When I was a child, my parents were not the type of people who conveyed their love in typically demonstrative ways, in ways that I honestly craved, so on the rare occasions when either one of them did utter something like “We’re proud of you”, or “I love you”, I was very moved by them going past their own comfort zones to express that kind of sentiment!
I’ve had many personal and professional challenges in my life and many of my siblings have been there for me over the years in ways I can’t really articulate without choking up. I also think having the courage to face one’s disagreements and past hurt, which comes with the territory of most friendships and relationships, is an act of kindness that I most value. Those I feel closest to have stuck it through with me by navigating through some painful, complex and messy misunderstandings. I’ll never forget those acts of kindness and generosity.
MW : What have you lost, growing older... and gained?
BQ : My mom died in January, and as I mentioned, my dad died many years ago. Sometimes I feel the depths of that loss – the fact that I don’t have my parents to share the ups and downs of the events of the rest of my life. Of course, I do have them close to my heart and their spirits live on….but damn I miss them! I’ve definitely gained a profound appreciation for them and their influence on me in countless ways.
On a professional level, as an older actress, unfortunately it’s easy to become invisible but I’m not ready to disappear and am joining the fight against ageism! I’m drawn to stories and filmmakers that include women and men of all ages, genders and ethnicities.
Perhaps if enough roles are not forthcoming in the next number of years, I’ll venture into writing and directing at some point.
MW : Where can we find out more / keep in touch?
BQ : Thanks so much, here’s a few links…!

AKA interacts with fans – “Do you think the negativity towards me is because I’m a coloured person?” by adejoy Dec 19, 2018 AKA pops a question that attracted controversial responses while trying to interact with his fans which he calls ‘Megacy.” The rapper has had an awesome year, however, he feels he’s got lot of criticism and beef this year which triggered the question asked that, “do you think a lot of the negativity towards me is because I’m a coloured person?” While some of his fans believes he’s criticized because of his colour, others says his personality is the cause of the diss. Nah, remember Trevor is coloured too. But there’s no negatively towards him, so I guess it’s not about race. — Katlego Maseng (@KatlegoMaseng1) December 18, 2018 When your album came out and I was hyping it a friend of mine told me straight that he doesn’t like your music because you’re coloured. — Malwande Tshaka🇿🇦 (@MalwandeTshaka) December 18, 2018 There’s Youngsta, there’s Shane Eagle and more are coloured, I think it’s something to do with your attitude chief — #TheVillagePlug (@g_luxolo) December 18, 2018 Not at all Mega. You’re just super rude, super arrogant also, super successful. If you add those together, you’re bound to be disliked/draw negativity — Phumz Vilakazi (@PhumzVilakazi) December 18, 2018 Respect and a man who throws his fans phones around nah babes it does not go saam ya bo🤦🏾‍♀️ pic.twitter.com/l5kH5usWjy — Roshell Buys💞 (@jigyasa_flame) December 18, 2018 I genuinely had forgotten that you’re coloured. That just how much I relate to u as an artist. Keep your head high king, we love u❤️ — Rebotile👑 (@lihubhulu) December 18, 2018 The rapper replied to the controversial comments and also thanked his fans for interaction. “Thanks for the chats and the bants! Always dope interacting with you guys … especially about interesting stuff.” And don’t stress if not everybody digs you … look at me, everyone supposedly hates me …. and I went Platinum 😂😂😂😂😂😂 … who bought all those records?! I guess we’ll never know. — AKA (@akaworldwide) December 18, 2018 When it comes to people jumping on stage … it’s all about the energy. You are jumping into the Lion’s cage at the zoo. We are now PERFORMING together … you don’t see a phone in my hand, so ….. uhm. Yah. 😂 — AKA (@akaworldwide) December 18, 2018 Wait. Y’all think Trev is coloured? 😂 actually … this actually opens a bigger can of worms … which coloured people themselves are still searching for the answer to. What does it mean to be coloured 🤔 … In the South African context of course. https://t.co/MdzXzGG5ai — AKA (@akaworldwide) December 18, 2018 Well … being “coloured” in the South African context is super super complicated. Like for instance … for heritage day at school … what do you come dressed as? Klopse? Dickies? Definitely not. Malay? So many questions. https://t.co/xHiUeSSgR8 — AKA (@akaworldwide) December 18, 2018 If you ever meet me, I promise you’ll totally dig me .. If you thought “Naija to the world” was just a trend, think again. The stakes are higher, as more Nigerian creatives make the move towards occupying seats at the global entertainment table. With features in Essence and Glamour Magazine, as well as a recent Teen Vogue NYFW mentorship programme, Slashed by Tia’s Teni Adeola has come a long way from her Ituen Basi intern days.

It started with the music. Over the past couple of years, we’ve seen Nigerian music often dubbed “Afro-beat” slowly infiltrate the global market. We had a mini moment when Wizkid lent faint but memorable vocals to culture vulture Drake’s 2016 hit single, One Dance, and an even bigger moment when Beyonce curated an entire album built off our sound, featuring 7 of the biggest names in our industry. While Nigerian music has had a meteoric rise to the global entertainment stratosphere, fashion has had its own moment, even though it’s acceleration might be slower.

From Maki Oh to Jewel by Lisa and now, Mowalola. Nigerian designers have been building a more diversified clientele and gaining the attention of world-renowned magazines and shows. When you consider the challenges facing the industry especially the designers based here, it’s hard not to root for their success and celebrate each moment or feature, no matter how small, as a triumph.
At just 21, New York-based Nigerian designer, Teni Adeola, has single-handedly built a globally recognized label, leveraging on the power of social media marketing. Slashed by Tia which was launched in 2016 while Teni was still in school, has become a go-to for fun, flirty and confident pieces that represent a new generation of women going against societal norms and slut-shaming. Speaking to Glamour about the risque pieces the brand has been known to put out, the Parsons graduate said, “A lot of the time people wear see-through clothes and it’s often described as tacky or distasteful, but I feel like with my clothes, even though it may be see-through and you may be seeing boobs, there definitely is an artistic aspect to it…..With my clothes, I definitely wanted to make them slightly more risqué. It just goes against the whole idea of ruffles at the time and just how women were viewed at the time.”

Teni who described her line’s aesthetic as “Modern Renaissance” draws inspiration from old paintings and the obsession with ruffles back in the day. Her sheer ruffled pieces have been spotted on Grammy winners, Dua Lipa and Lorde; R&B star, SZA; Young Miami from City Girls; Supermodels Gigi Hadid and Jourdan Dunn.
A huge supporter of the diversity in fashion movement being a dark-skinned girl from Nigeria, most of the labels ads and runway shows have featured models of color. With over 47,000 followers on Instagram, Slashed by Tia is a perfect example of adapting to a new age of social media marketing which cuts costs, and has a wider reach. Fun fact; Both Sza and Kali Uchis shot Teni a DM on Instagram to get their Slashed by Tia fix.

Kept this pretty secret until now but finally can reveal I’m so excited to be among the first ever @teenvogue Generation Next designers to present my collection at New York fashion Week! Thankyou @lpeopleswagner and @teenvogue team for supporting young designers and can’t wait to be part of this !! 🥰🥰 #dykesport #nyfw #tvgenerationnext
A post shared by Georgia Fallon (@dykesport) on Aug 22, 2019 at 4:27pm PDT
Her recent selection by Conde Nast’s Teen Vogue for a mentorship programme at the recently concluded New York Fashion Week came as no surprise. While Teni might not face the same structural and infrastructural roadblocks Nigerian-based designers face, running a label on your own cannot be easy. However, her hard work has paid off. Talking to Essence Magazine about her role in moving the culture forward, she said, “At the end of the day, we’re young, we’re shifting things, so I just have to keep playing my part, have to keep doing what’s right.”

Page 2: Fears for the health of Ryan Seacrest as Keeping Up with the Kardashians which is his cash cow is being put out to pasture -- Ryan is pulling his hair out about the potential loss of revenue and racking his brain trying to come up with something that can replace it
Page 3: Ellen DeGeneres is in a panic fearing she may lose her daytime TV show and wife Portia de Rossi in the wake of the scandal that’s tarnished her once pristine reputation as the Queen of Nice -- Ellen is in the deepest funk of her life as most of her high-powered Hollywood pals have been ghosting her and she is convinced there may be no coming back from this -- what’s more Ellen is concerned additional bad news may drive away her wife Portia
Page 4: Kelly Clarkson has vowed to remain silent about the nightmare behind her divorce from Brandon Blackstock to protect her kids -- Kelly is known for oversharing but she’s keeping her lips zipped about Brandon because she never wants her children to know how bad things really were with their dad
Page 5: Cardi B’s divorce filing from Offset described her marriage as irretrievably broken -- Cardi accused Offset of cheating in 2018 five months after the birth of their daughter Kulture and Offset seemed to own up to his infidelities on Instagram -- following the massive success of WAP Cardi finally listened to pals who have been telling her to toss the cheater but she wants the break to be amicable and will accept a joint custody arrangement for Kulture
Page 6: Kanye West is crowing he personally engineered the downfall of Keeping Up with the Kardashians and that he’s the one calling the shots in his marriage to Kim Kardashian from now on -- Kanye hated the show and his constant negativity wore Kim down and killed it for her too and without her it couldn’t possibly go on -- Kanye believes Kim’s appearance on the show was at the heart of all their problems and now that she’s out of there he’s got every hope they can fix things
Page 7: Endless renovations at their Los Angeles mansion have left George and Amal Clooney at each other’s throats and the feuding twosome are on the brink of a $500 million divorce -- the construction work which has soared over budget to more than $1 million has confined them to close quarters with their twins Ella and Alexander and they’re constantly bumping heads, love-hungry Katie Holmes is heading for a showdown with new boyfriend Emilio Vitolo Jr.’s scorned ex Rachel Emmons who was blindsided by Emilio and now she’s demanding answers from both him and Katie -- Katie knew Emilio was engaged to the designer but launched a steamy fling with him anyway and Rachel is not finished with Emilio or Katie by a long shot
Page 8: Hollywood Hookups -- Ray J and Princess Love split again, Kaia Gerber and Jacob Elordi dating, Cassie Randolph gets a restraining order from Colton Underwood
Page 9: Queen Elizabeth snubbed Tom Cruise’s request for a private chat and it’s got the snobby superstar’s nose out of joint -- the Scientology poster boy got the bright idea to drop in on the British royal while filming the latest Mission: Impossible movies using London as a base because he is a huge royal fan but so far no one from the palace has responded and Tom’s ego is hurt because almost no one refuses the opportunity to meet with Tom and no isn’t a word he’s used to hearing and being ignored happens even less -- Her majesty would barely know who Tom Cruise is and he’d be just another American pipsqueak to her and Hollywood is not exactly her favorite place at the moment
Page 10: Hot Shots -- Kristen Taekman of The Real Housewives of New York City in California, Riley Keough at the beach in Malibu, Frances McDormand offered the Vulcan salute before the L.A. screening of her film Nomadland, Jennifer Lopez at a lunch date in NYC, Bruce Willis out and about in Brentwood
Page 11: A skin cancer scare has friends of sun-worshipping Caitlyn Jenner worried she’s playing Russian roulette with her health -- Caitlyn recently revealed a doctor took all the skin off her nose and reattached it to patch up a skin cancer scar -- she’s been treated for skin cancers on her cheek and nose but she’s a self-confessed tanning freak and can often be seen playing golf under the blazing California sun, Sofia Richie is getting revenge on ex Scott Disick by flirting up a storm with Will Smith’s son Jaden Smith and a string of other studs -- her phone was ringing off the hook with hot guys wanting a date and now that Sofia’s finally got Scott out of her hair she plans to show him what he’s missing
Page 12: Straight Shuter -- Gavin Rossdale plays tennis (picture), Kelly Ripa is fuming over Drew Barrymore’s new talk show and it’s been made clear to A-listers if they appear on Drew’s show they will not be welcomed back to talk with Kelly and Ryan Seacrest any time soon and the competition between talk shows to book big-name celebrity guests has never been more intense, there’s a new stud in town at ABC and it’s got World News Tonight anchor David Muir’s knickers in a twist because weekend anchor Tom Llamas is horning in on David’s spotlight, Britney Spears and her little sister Jamie Lynn Spears are looking for a home together because Jamie Lynn has accepted that she’ll need to help look after Britney for the rest of her life and Britney can afford to buy a house with separate wings so they’ll each have their privacy but Jamie Lynn can keep an eye on Britney
Page 13: In the latest sex scandal to hit the Fox News network senior legal analyst and former New Jersey judge Andrew Napolitano is battling back against allegations he sexually abused a New Jersey man in the 1980s, frail Ryan O’Neal reconciled with daughter Tatum O’Neal after 17 years but he’s a long way off from doing the same with son Redmond O’Neal -- ailing Ryan has distanced himself from his only child with the late Farrah Fawcett since Redmond was arrested and charged with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon and brandishing a knife and battery in 2018 -- Ryan sees Redmond’s troubles and demons as his alone to conquer and may even cut Redmond out of his will
Page 14: Crime
Page 15: Reality show train-wrecks Kate and Jon Gosselin have renewed their toxic battle as the bickering exes engage in an ugly war of words over child abuse charges
Page 16: Goodfellas movie gangster Ray Liotta has taken his whirlwind romance with brunette stunner Jacy Nittolo to the next level by tying the knot -- his new bride’s father was a real-life killer Stewart Woodman who was found guilty in 1990 of the execution-style slaying of his parents, Zac Efron’s summer lovin’ with an Aussie waitress seems to have already hit a sour note -- Zac has been living the high life Down Under with Vanessa Valladares since he hit up her boss for her number two months ago but by early September the pair were caught on camera in an outdoor cafe reportedly locked in a heated argument about their future -- this has been a fun fling for Zac but the reality is he has to head back to the U.S. and attend to his career while Vanessa is just a kid and her whole life is in Australia
Page 17: Denise Richards is ditching The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills in a desperate bid to save her marriage -- the endless rehash of former co-star Brandi Glanville’s allegations they shared a same-sex fling despite Denise’s denials has pushed her relationship with alt-medicine guru Aaron Phypers onto life support
Page 18: American Life -- I was trapped in wildfire hell
Page 19: Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood plan to tell their story in a no-holds-barred documentary -- the country duo hopes to mimic the success of Walk the Line which was a biopic about Johnny Cash and June Carter’s fiery romance and they’ve been talking to producers and writers -- they’ll also discuss their weight battles and food binges and how they got back in shape with clips of Garth working out and Trisha whipping up some of her healthier meals
Page 20: America’s colleges infested by spies -- enemy nations using top schools to steal vital secrets and recruit moles
Page 22: They Stayed After Partners Strayed -- cheating scandals that couldn’t tear star couples apart -- Jay-Z and Beyonce, David Letterman and Regina Lasko, Woody Harrelson and Laura Louie
Page 23: Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith, Kevin Hart and Eniko Parrish
Page 26: Jaime King is locked in a vicious war with estranged husband Kyle Newman who has accused her of being a chronic drug addict and alcoholic and cleaning out their bank accounts -- Kyle also claims Jaime was abusing drugs during her two pregnancies and that their son Leo was born addicted to opiates -- Kyle said he makes $750 a month now as a writer and claimed he had to give up his directing career to look after their family and after their unsuccessful settlement talks in June he claimed Jaime went to Canada to film her show Black Summer leaving the boys with him for four months without support or any funds
Page 27: Hoops phenom Maya Moore recently revealed she married Jonathan Irons the man she put her high-flying sports career on hold for as she helped free him from prison following his wrongful conviction more than 20 years ago -- Maya considered one of the greatest WNBA players ever ditched the league in 2019 to focus on social justice issues and secure Jonathan’s release -- Jonathan now 40 was only 16 when he was slapped with a 50-year sentence for burglary and assault in Missouri
Page 28: Cover Story -- Cops in the crosshairs
Page 32: Acting legend Diana Rigg’s dying regret was that she never took advantage of the steamy chemistry she shared with Avengers co-star Patrick Macnee -- their sexual tension drove the series and young Diana always wanted to make it a reality but Patrick was married to Katherine Woodville at the time
Page 34: Health Watch
Page 36: Film femme fatale Sharon Stone is 62 but griped that folks are still angling to get an eyeful of her rack -- she compared her situation to Marilyn Monroe’s where she did movies that mattered but she still couldn’t get completely out of being that thing, Duane “Dog” Chapman claimed his late wife Beth haunted him after he found new love with fiancee Francie Frane

Let's talk about #BlackExcellence, shall we?! Montoya Major is a real-life YBFer that we're stanning over! More about her incredible journey inside...
Motherhood has a way of showing ones true strength and perseverance. So many of us have stories about how our mothers made unbelievable sacrifices and provided us with the best lives they could.
It’s no secret that mothers can be super women and new mom/soon-to-be Bachelor’s and Master’s degree recipient, Montoya Major is one for sure! She has recently been in the spotlight because of her remarkable tenacity and perseverance as a graduate student and a new mommy.
Montoya gave birth to twin girls in May 2018 - one year and three months before she was scheduled to complete her masters program at Nova Southeastern University. If she stayed on track to graduate, she would complete her program with a Bachelor’s and Master’s.
After giving birth to her twins, whom she delivered via a c-section and missing just one week of classes, she was told by a professor that that was unacceptable. She was forced to return to school only a week after delivering twins.
Major, who became pregnant with twins just five months after beginning her classes, admitted via Facebook that the decision was trying and that there were times when she wanted to quit.
"I ALMOST GAVE UP! The Devil really had me," she wrote. "NOTHING could have prepared me for the journey that I've been through...Our program started off with 26 people and I am now 1 of 17 that will be graduating."
The 23-year-old new mom continued to transparently share some of the struggles she faced.
"I went to class every single day literally until the day I gave birth. I was determined to finish. Only after a week of giving birth via C-section I was back in class because I was told it was 'unacceptable that I missed a week of school,'" she said.
Unfortunately for Major, the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 - which recommends new mothers get 12 weeks leave following giving birth - doesn't always apply to full-time students. And she couldn't rely on the help of family and friends because she was in Fort Lauderdale for school while her loved ones live in Mobile, Alabama.
"My grades dropped DRASTICALLY and my anxiety went through the roof," she continued. "I was so afraid of failing and losing everything and most importantly my kids. I honestly thought dropping out would be the best choice for me, but I knew I couldn't let my kids down and I was only giving the devil what he wanted."
The determined mother didn’t let any of that hold her back! She pushed through and is still on track to graduate ON TIME! On August 16th, Major graduates with a bachelor's degree in cardiovascular sonography and a master's in health science. Woot! She plans to move back to her hometown of Mobile, Alabama after she graduates to be closer to family while she raises her two daughters and looks for a job
Montoya and her one-year-old daughters will be celebrating mommy in a major way!

Tag Your Best Friends, Going Through 2019 Like…
We are almost a month into the new year. Most of us couldn’t wait. Did you go through 2018 thinking that everyone in your circle was definitely in your circle, only to find out “They was for Everybody else but you.” Don’t feel bad it happened to the most successful people. Hell someone is always tricking off in the Beyhive, that’s how we been knowing all the bts secrets, like who bit Beyonce. But let’s be real, everyone has a Tiffany Haddish type friend, she think’s everything is funny.Note that she will tell all of your business while smiling about it. That is the chick you can’t take everywhere.
On the other hand, some of us entrepreneurs have to deal with the friends that act like Monique. You remember that whole Netflix comparison when we were all asked to not Netflix and Chill. We are not saying that Monique was wrong because equal pay is important, but Amy Schummer wasn’t trying to be called out like that. It was like an episode of the Brady Bunch, “Marsha, Marsha, Marsha.” Netflix, please never do that again. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Literally no one escaped the ‘Where are my friends” questioning. Even Cardi felt like the world was coming for her. First, she gets the “We don’t have any beef” lie from Nicki Minaj. However, she gets hit with a shoe by Nicki’s friend Rah Ali. Then the one person who should of made her year better ends up cheating after they had their first child. Imagine that!! Sounds like something a Nigga named Offset would do. We aren’t sure what celebrity or what normal person had the worst year. However, we are reminding you to make a come back like Mariah. Her 2017 was ugly, with all the memes from having a jacked up microphone bringing in the New Year, and then going through a none supportive relationship. Mariah was the Queen of come backs in 2018. Hell her worse album ended up making a come back. Like really? Glitter? We liked it back then, but seventeen years later she proved her critics wrong. That was all God Dahling! So whatever, is whatever! Focus in 2019 knowing that the best is yet to come. Don’t take your Tiffany Haddish everywhere. Tell your Monique to not put you on blast. Stay away from the Rah Ali’s and Nicki Minaj’s who know they don’t like you even when they say they don’t have beef. Keep your Offset onset and in check. Lastly, make a comeback like Mariah folks! Shout out to the real best friends who stay true.
Happy New Year!

Breaking Down The Celebrity Cameos In Childish Gambino’s ‘Feels Like Summer’ Video
youtube
Donald Glover — aka Childish Gambino — has demonstrated a true flair for the visual components of his latest releases. First, his “This Is America” video lit up the internet with discussion as fans and journalists alike analyzed the symbolism throughout the video and its various imitators. Then, just days ago, he released the animated video to follow-up “Feels Like Summer,” packing it to the brim with cameos and commentary on the rap game.
From visually remarking on Nicki Minaj’s one-sided feud with Travis Scott to referencing Migos’ enthusiasm for basketball, many of the cameos portray a piece of the hip-hop tapestry that has expanded to include both pioneers like Puff Daddy and upstarts like Lil Pump. There’s even a semi-controversial scene in which a crying, MAGA-hat clad Kanye West receives a loving hug from Michelle Obama. That particular tableau was dissected both on Twitter and in several publications by viewers trying to parse its intent.
Here are all the cameos from the video, with brief explainers of who each of the figures is and why they’re so important to hip-hop today.
Lil Pump and Trippie Redd
Youtube
Two of the hottest up-and-coming rappers from the Soundcloud scene, it could be said their appearance makes reference to the way their presence seems to pester older, more established artists.
21 Savage and Metro Boomin
Youtube
21 Savage, known for his aggressive deadpan and harrowing tales of the trap life, sits in his car with Metro Boomin, one of trap music’s top producers, smoking a joint, and shooing away Pump and Redd. The pair released a joint album last year with Offset from Migos.
Kodak Black
Youtube
Kodak Black, another Soundcloud-affiliated rapper, can’t come out to play with his buddies Pump and Trippie, possibly referencing Kodak’s current legal troubles. His orange shirt sure looks like a prison jumpsuit.
Migos
Youtube
Quavo, Offset, and Takeoff hoop in the driveway, a favorite summer pastime of both the hood and the trap rap trio, who have taken to getting in games with Drake on their shared Aubrey And The Three Amigos tour.
Chance the Rapper, Jaden Smith, Birdman
Youtube
Birdman, CEO of Cash Money Records, works the grill while Jaden Smith, son of Will and all-around quirky, eccentric young thought leader, leaps around in a homemade superhero costume — much like his real-life counterpart. Chance The Rapper seems amused and is easily identifiable from his trademark “3” hat — which he once claimed his own daughter can’t recognize him without.
Will Smith
Youtube
Rap’s current number one dad takes part in the most “dad” ritual of the warmer months — scrubbing up the family station wagon in socks and sandals. The only thing missing is a Bluetooth earpiece.
Azealia Banks
Youtube
Unlike the real-life Azealia, the animated version keeps out of the way, perching on a branch in a nearby tree and surveying the neighborhood goings-on. If only the real one could confine herself to doing the same, she might have been a lot more successful like the erstwhile rival who appears next.
Nicki Minaj and Travis Scott
Youtube
Possibly the most topical appearance of the whole video, Nicki appears annoyed when Travis pulls a support block out of her block castle, causing the whole thing to crumble. This mirrors the real-world temper tantrum Nicki threw when Travis outsold her comeback album, Queen, in its first week, even though his own album, Astroworld, was in its second.
The Weeknd, Ty Dolla $ign, and Frank Ocean
Youtube
The three crooners are seen playing tug-of-war with A$AP Rocky, Solange, and Willow Smith, but perhaps this is a bit of good-natured summer fun rather than a musical commentary. After all, Rocky doesn’t even obviously fit with this particular group, who are all notable singers leading the R&B renaissance on radio and streaming stations for the past two years.
Soulja Boy
Youtube
Soulja Boy is seen instructing Trippie Redd and Lil Pump, which is apropos; Soulja was arguably the first rapper to really break through to the mainstream using online resources like Youtube, which helped propel his viral hit “Superman” into cultural ubiquity and was likely a staple of the younger rappers’ upbringings.
Drake and Future
Youtube
Drake and Future are paired, as they were on their joint mixtape, What A Time To Be Alive, but here, Drake struggles to chase down Future, who seems to have stolen his bike. Again, this is probably more a reference to summertime shenanigans than any sort of beef between the two.
Kid Cudi
Youtube
The first break in the neighborhood scenes depicts a pretty sad-looking Kid Cudi. The reason for his melancholy expression isn’t readily apparent, but as one of the rappers who put depression at the forefront of his musical agenda, the look isn’t out of place on Cudi’s face.
Kanye West and Michelle Obama
Youtube
The most controversial scene of the video portrays either the healing power of a mother’s love, the need for Black women to “save” Kanye from “The Sunken Place,” or Kanye’s secret hope to be embraced by the Obama administration, the rumored cause of his sudden liking for Donald Trump.
Beyonce
Youtube
Beyonce’s presence here could likely lend credence to one of the Kanye theories, or simply be representative of the end result of finding and accepting oneself and the inner peace that comes along with it, judging from her beatific expression.
Andrew Gillium
Youtube
Perhaps depicting a sort of hope for the future, the Democratic Atlanta governor hopeful sits on a park bench, maybe relishing a moment of peace from his long, unlikely campaign.
Lil Uzi Vert, Oprah Winfrey, Kehlani, and Tiffany Haddish
Youtube
Returning to the neighborhood, Donald passes a porch where Lil Uzi Vert, current symbol of a new kind of carefree masculinity in hip-hop, gets his hair braided by Oprah alongside Bay Area crooner Kehlani, who is attended to by comedian Tiffany Haddish. Uzi and Kehlani have both been open with their struggles with mental health and have challenge gender stereotypes while unabashedly expressing their individuality in recent years — something Oprah and Haddish probably know plenty about.
Lil Yachty and Charlamagne
Youtube
Radio personality Charlamagne Tha God shares an ice cream bar with young rapper Lil Yachty, who he once called the “Poster Child For Wack Rappers.” Maybe Gambino hopes for a reconciliation between the two hip-hop generational figureheads, which could ease tensions among the broader culture. After all, everybody loves ice cream.
Gucci Mane
Youtube
Gucci Mane, one of the godfathers of modern Atlanta hip-hop, sunbathes, showing off his newly chiseled physique. Gucci shocked the world when he was released from prison last year slimmer and brimming with optimism, but his new outlook paid off as he had a huge 2017 complete with book deals, weddings, and collaborations galore.
Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Diddy, Wiz Khalifa, and Jay-Z
Youtube
This grouping seems bizarre, but all five of these rappers are also big names when it comes to business, with Jay and Puff Daddy (aka Brother Love) topping Forbes‘ Wealthiest Hip-Hop Acts of 2018 with Dr. Dre. The stoner duo of Snoop Dogg and Wiz are also perennial favorites with some of the broadest-reaching fanbases due to their affable personalities and love of cannabis. However, the verity of the dance skills displayed here is questionable (especially for Jay), and barring some kind of perspective trick, everyone’s heights are wildly off — Snoop and Wiz are by far the tallest at 6’4, while Diddy tops out at 5’10.
Ball Brothers and Young Thug
Youtube
Although they’re primarily known as athletes, the Ball brothers (Lonzo, LiAngelo, and LaMelo) have become fixtures in hip-hop as well thanks to their outspoken father Lavar and Lonzo’s rap ambitions. Young Thug seems content to play his video game and do his own thing — fur coat and all.
2 Chainz, Meek Mill, Pusha T, and Lil Wayne
The photo 2 Chainz takes on his iPhone seems unlikely; Lil Wayne and Pusha T have been beefing since about 2006, but if anyone has what it takes to promote some “peace” in hip-hop, it’s Meek Mill, recent advocate of prison law reform.
Rae Sremmurd and J. Cole
Youtube
Unfortunately, 2 Chainz may have to shoot another pic, as pranksters Slim Jxmmi and Swae Lee spray down his subjects with their Super Soakers. Rae Sremmurd have seemed pretty lighthearted and rambunctious in interviews, so their antics here wouldn’t be totally out of the realm of possibility. Of course, J. Cole is slightly better armed with a gardening hose and though he may seem like a pretty serious guy, he’s always come off as good-natured, turning his short-lived “beef” with Lil Pump into a teachable moment for all of hip-hop.
Janelle Monae and Tessa Thompson
Youtube
Former android stand-in Janelle Monae — who may have one of the best albums of 2018 so far — skateboards down the street with rumored paramour Tessa Thompson in tow.
Chris Brown
Youtube
As the neighborhood fades away again, the first figure to appear from the darkness is one who has long struggled with his time in the spotlight, Chris Brown. In the video, he too sheds some tears, as perhaps the real-life Brown wishes he could do without the pressure of outdated ideas of masculinity pressuring him into violent behavior and displays of bravado.
Outkast
Youtube
The original ambassadors of Atlanta rap are reunited here in Donald Glover’s imagination, even if it seems even more unlikely than ever that they’ll link up again for the betterment of hip-hop and music as a whole. Their iconic status is sealed, though, and maybe that’s why they appear here like monuments to a legendary time in history.
Rihanna
Youtube
The singer appears as an ethereal being, like a goddess with a mischievous smirk on her face. Perhaps this is how Childish Gambino sees her — and he wouldn’t be the first.
Whitney Houston
Youtube
The late singer appears like a flashback, probably as a tribute to her remarkable influence over many of the artists who also appear in the video. Like Outkast, she is a legendary artist who deserves to be remembered at her peak.
Michael Jackson
Youtube
Continuing that theme, we see the King Of Pop himself, but perlaterot the version we came to know later in his life. This is the ideal Michael Jackson, proud of his appearance, self-assured, unbothered by his father’s judgements or the standards of the world that he would spend his latter years trying to escape. If the ultimate goal of the video was to depict Donald Glover’s musical influences and heroes, then perhaps he saved the best for last, honoring his greatest idol with prime placement as the last face the video shows before Glover’s animated counterpart makes it home.

Beyonce, Jay-Z Rejected By Queen Elizabeth?
New Post has been published on http://gr8gossip.xyz/beyonce-jay-z-rejected-by-queen-elizabeth/
Beyonce, Jay-Z Rejected By Queen Elizabeth?
(Getty Images)
Were Beyonce and Jay-Z really rejected by Queen Elizabeth? A report claims the superstar couple wanted to shoot a music video at Buckingham Palace, but their request was denied. Gossip Cop looked into the story.
“Palace Slams Gate On Beyonce,” reads a headline in the latest edition of the National Enquirer. According to the supermarket tabloid, she and Jay-Z have “met their match” in Queen Elizabeth. Noting how Beyonce and Jay-Z’s “Ape[expletive]” video was filmed at the Louvre, a so-called “spy” is quoted as saying, “Jay and Beyonce are on a mission to shoot their music videos at some of the world’s most famous locations.”
The unidentifiable source continues, “But when they put in a request to shoot at Buckingham Palace, it was rejected by the queen.” The magazine’s alleged tipster goes on to contend, “Beyonce might be pop royalty, but she got a firm ‘no’ on access to Buckingham Palace.” The short article is even illustrated with a photo of Beyonce that has a word bubble exclaiming, “But we’re Hollywood royalty!” Next to a headshot of Queen Elizabeth, another word bubble says, “Girl, you’re just a cheap imitation.”
The outlet, however, doesn’t provide a single piece of proof to back this narrative up. Gossip Cop suspects it was manufactured only because of reports last month that claimed Beyonce and Jay-Z were rejected when they requested to film at the Colosseum in Rome. It seems the publication is mimicking that storyline and subbing in another historic venue.
But Gossip Cop spoke with a Buckingham Palace spokesperson, who laughed off these claims as untrue. The palace does have a filming policy, such as mandating that “requests must be received at least one month before the preferred date of filming,” but it seems this is one application that was never received. It should also be noted that the tabloid has a history of spreading phony allegations about all of the parties involved here.
In March, for example, there was a whole cover story about Queen Elizabeth abdicating the throne so Prince William and Kate Middleton could become king and queen. Just one month later, she formally endorsed Prince Charles to lead the Commonwealth. Also in March, the magazine wanted readers to believe Beyonce was considering kicking Jay-Z off their “On The Run II” tour. Meanwhile, only days ago the couple started the second leg of the concert series without a hitch.
In another recent flub, Gossip Cop observed that a full year had passed since the outlet falsely claimed Beyonce and Jay Z were on the brink of a divorce. Time has shown how the publication isn’t entirely credible. This latest story isn’t trustworthy, either.
