280418 & 290418
Dear Diary,
Last night was a blast; I don’t ever want to forget it. I cannot reiterate how hyped I was for this day to come -- Elemental 2018: Distant Worlds -- a combined performing arts concert/musical proudly presented by Pioneer Junior College. My friend aka partner-in-crime (060418 for context) played the second lead (will elaborate later) in the musical.
In the evening, I went to a flower shop and bought a single pink rose for her. Well, I did tell her beforehand that she will be receiving flowers, but she doesn’t know what flower. 😏 I requested for fillers (I believe they are baby’s breath) and chose black & light pink wrapping, which added up to $12. It’s fking beautiful and I was subconsciously grinning from ear to ear as I intently watched the florist do the wrapping swiftly. I also felt slightly anxious because giving a flower, especially a rose, is a very gay deed HAHAHA I could feel the soft gazes of the strangers around me, which made my face burn with embarrassment.
I met up with a guy friend and we had dinner at the food court in Kallang Wave Mall. We chatted about our (mundane) school lives & the mutual friends we had at our alma mater. We then proceeded to the supermarket and bought a broccoli for our friend (as she so desired LMAO). The cashier was taking forever and we were running short of time, so we politely asked the old man before us if we could jump the queue. To our relief, he said yes. However, we were utterly horrified when the couple who was queuing behind us had taken advantage of the old man’s kindness & jumped his queue as well. 😱😱 Wtf y’all are juz plain assholes man. Karma will get these humans.
There was a gorgeous pink sunset, so we spent a minute taking pics despite running late for the musical. Consequently, we had to be seated at Level 5 (the top tier) of the theatre. On stage, at the back, the choir occupied 3 rows (with steps so they could be seated when they’re not singing), and in front of them was the symphonic band. There was a cage-like partition that separated the choir & band from the musical acting stage thing.
Synopsis: This year, the central theme of Elemental revolves around the notion of light in its literal and metaphorical forms. The narrative of the production revolves around its three principal characters, and how they cope with the changing circumstances around them -- Renée, an explorer who is compelled to venture into the unknown; [Renée’s] Mother, who is torn between the pain of losing Renée and knowing she has to let her go; and Alamby (played by my friend), a folklorist who dreams of making new discoveries of the past. The effect of their motivations, decisions, and actions are set against the backdrop of two distinct groups of people -- the first being those afflicted by nyctalopia (night-blindness), and the other by hemeralopia (day-blindness). From its blessings of sight, knowledge and warmth, to its ability to disorientate, blind and burn; the various manifestations of light from within and without force the characters to negotiate its effects on their beliefs, their actions and their way of life.
The choir was SPECTACULAR (mostly bc they’re singing Ola Gjelio’s pieces -- what an amazing composer who cleverly utilises dissonance), even though they were merely singing in the background. The leads sang beautifully (they were vocally trained) and it was awe-inspiring, but from a choralist’s standpoint, my friend’s voice appealed to me the most bc she understood her head voice. My fave part of the musical was Renée & Alamby’s “For Good” duet. I DEMAND AN ENCORE. Anyway, in one night, my friend had become the gay icon of PJC HAHAHA. That’s bc the script was intended for Alamby to be a male character (which ofc got scrapped bc my friend is juz too fking great during the auditions HAHA) and Alamby had this one line directed to Renée: “I am becoming fond of you,” but oh well, lesbian or not, I still ship them. 😍
After the musical, I waited a long while for our friend from choir to find us. We presented her the broccoli and took pics. I waited again for partner-in-crime to show up (a whole bunch of us -- friends, her family -- awaited near the spiral staircase) and we showered her with hugs & flowers. Such a joyful moment. :”) It was nice to see a few of my old pals from sec sch. Partner-in-crime admitted that she’s glad I came to watch her, and I lowkey felt really touched by her words. I’m so proud of her.
Oh gosh, I’m having a bit of PCD rn. Idw to go to sch tmrw. 😭😭 I didn’t know what to do with my life anymore, so I slept in after watching Wheel of Fortune in the morning. My mum wanted to drag me out of the house at the last minute, but I stubbornly refused because I wanted to rest at home. She got fed up with me and now I’m just wondering what have I done wrong lol. She said I had to settle my own dinner, but she bought pizza so... I took a couple of slices without question...
