the guilt trip that wont leave

It was a little more than three years ago now. I had left the hospital, excited with my best friend for a night of doing things I should not have been doing in such a time of sadness and concern. I was sixteen, always doing stupid, fucked up things. I didn’t think she would die. Obviously I knew she was sick, I was stupid but not ‘stupid stupid’. Maybe I was just being ignorant, it’s was much easier than facing the fact I was watching my own mother wither away to nothing in a bleak, yellow walled, grim and somewhat anxiety inducing hospital. It was always hard for me to breathe while I was there. I hated the smell, I hated the staff, I hated the reason I had to be there. Nothing was more exciting than going out with my friends, getting disgustingly drunk, passing out in a random bed in a dinosaur onsie in a pile of all my pals. I remember how amazing I felt passing out that night. I felt amazing until I was kicked awake and my friend was screaming at me to answer my phone. The wave of absolute shame and self disgust that flowed over me when I realized she had died without me there has never truly left me.
