What the fuck are the Elements again?

Hello hello, welcome to part 3 of 6 (planned) worldbuilding posts about the shitshow that is my Dark Heart Universe. Read Part One - the DHU, and Part Two - the Dark Heart, at the links. (if the second doesnt work plz let me know im writing this before its been posted and don’t quite know how the custom URL thingie works) Today’s installment: Elements and their Elementals. 

Okay where to start... Well, the Elements are sort of the extensions of Dark Heart (henceforth known as DH). If what i know about octopuses is right, then it’s like that, where they are attached to the main thing, the octopus, but each has its own sorta mind and can move independently. They each have their own personalities, and fuck could i do a whole post on each Element individually because I have done too much fucking development on each of their personalities and histories (specifically Poison, Electricity, and the three unofficial Elements). The Elements have diluted power, though, and are basically how the DH interacts with the world. 

There are 12 Elements, but people like to argue, and only 9 are universally agreed upon as to being Elements. These include your basic 4 Elements (Fire, Water, Air, Earth), as well as Poison, Electricity, Light, Dark, and Death. The three no one can agree on are Time, Magic, and Life. The reason no one can agree on these is that Time is just really confusing and a shit show to end all shit shows (if you want to know more, just ask me about Time Master/Oliver). Magic is sort of a weird thing that people assume exists because of magic type Supers, but can’t actually confirm it because there is no Elemental (fun story, the magic type Supers are the Elementals, it’s just there isn’t One, the power is spread through All Of Them. I’m sure that cleared up nothing). And Life just never has an Elemental, so it’s not considered a real Element, it’s just assumed again it’s there because there is a Death one, so there has to be a Life one, right?

Anyways, about those Elementals. The Elements/DH can’t actually influence the world beyond like, having shadows cast by the sun, or growing plants, without an Elemental. These are usually ordinary children between the ages of 10-13, who are chosen by an Element to funnel their power and sort of do what the Element says, but also sort of just exist? Basically, they just let the Element be a Thing. If the Element chooses someone younger than 10 (though 11 is more normal, 10 is rare), the kid will burn up instantly because they can’t handle the power, and older than 13 (basically older than the start of puberty is what i’m saying), and the child can’t adjust to having power, and burns up. If the kid is already a Super, then they can’t handle the strength of the DH, since Supers already have the DH, and... you get the picture. it’s a small window. The Elementals, if they live long enough to learn to control their powers (which is hit or miss here), and manage to not burn up during the rest of their lives, they’ll still die at 40 usually, though some Elements it’s younger, but rarely do they live older than 40, because their body decays too much. 

And when I say burn up, by the way, I mean the strength of the DH... literally burns them up. It doesn’t always look like fire (Earth turns to stone, Poison rots, Electricity literally explodes) but yea. not really pretty. Because, see, the Elementals have... no limits basically on what they can do. If their Element can theoretically do it, then the Elemental can do it. Only problem is using too much of their power will kill them. Whoopsies. However, not every Element always has an Elemental. Life basically never has one, Death only has one during periods of lots o’ death like wars and what not (When Morty Heart showed up, people got ScaredTM, because like... there’s no war going on right now shit fuck what’s coming??), and the normal 4 pretty much always have one, which is why they are considered the Main FourTM. Also, there is only ever 1 Elemental of that type alive at one time. 

And I think that’s everything I’ve got down for the Elements and Elementals, in what i know is a very unorganized, whatever popped into my mind first, mess of a post.
