space nerds and enthusiasts, it’s the moment you’ve been waiting for

(or at least- the moment I’VE been waiting for since jwst imaged jupiter)

the James Webb Space Telescope’s NIRCam has imaged Saturn for the first time, and it’s SO COOL!!

above are the two processed images, the lower having the visible moons and rings labeled, but there’s also some unprocessed images from jwst feed, which i think still look super cool, and just show what a world of a difference processing makes.

i think these images are SO cool, and i can’t wait to print them out to hang on my walls :)

My favorite planet is Saturn. Because it's never alone, even when it might feel like it is. Saturn has thousands of rocks floating around it, they make up it's rings. Saturn also has 82 moons that watch over it, never unnoticed by a single one of them.

When I feel alone, I think about Saturn. How even when it may feel like it's alone, it's not. I'm never alone, sometimes it just feels like I am.

I've gotta say, every time I go through the new bookmarks of Saturn's Rings I cackle a little harder. Some of my notable favorites are:

Explanation Explanation: Atlas, Daphnis, and Pan are small, inner, ring moons of Saturn. They are shown at the same scale in this montage of images by the Cassini spacecraft that made its grand final orbit of the ringed planet in September 2017. In fact, Daphnis was discovered in Cassini images from 2005. Atlas and Pan were first sighted in images from the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft. Flying saucer-shaped Atlas orbits near the outer edge of Saturn's bright A Ring while Daphnis orbits inside the A Ring's narrow Keeler Gap and Pan within the A Ring's larger Encke Gap. The curious equatorial ridges of the small ring moons could be built up by the accumulation of ring material over time. Even diminutive Daphnis makes waves in the ring material as it glides along the edge of the Keeler Gap.
