Silmarillion AU: The Ballet
Morgoth deceived Maedhros, feigning he would treat with him if Maedhros would but come to his mountain fortress and receive there from Morgoth’s own hand a Silmaril. But when Maedhros came, his allies were slain and he was taken and chained upon the mountain. Years passed in his torment, until Fingon dared to pass beneath the shadow of the mountain; he smote the chains of Maedhros and bore him away, aided by Thorondor King of Eagles.
Sergei Polunin as Morgoth, Jozef Varga as Maedhros, Timothy van Poucke as Fingon, Sarah Lamb as Thorondor

My first trip to London and I had tickets to Sleeping Beauty! The Royal Opera House was packed for a Monday Matinee (I think it was a school holiday) and the performance is everything I hoped for. The company looked very sharp, the costumes sumptuous, the corps a delight. Gina Storm-Jensen was the Lilac Fairy and danced regally. You believed in her power of love to conquer evil.
But I was there for Sarah Lamb, and she was next level. She has an airy elegance on stage that is not captured in photos. Her lightness, stage presence, musical phrasing are superb. She transported the entire hall to a land faraway. I didn’t realize until recently that she’s over 40 and near the end of her career, but Aurora is HER role. She is every bit the charming, young princess. Technically, she was shy of perfect. She adjusted at the end of two diagonals. She seemingly got a little dizzy and had to take a step to save her balance. But the hard parts—rose adagio, Act III PPD, dream sequence—were utter perfection. Elegant is my overall impression.
Hirano is a noble prince. To be honest, Prince Florine doesn’t have much to do in this ballet. His one job is to be an elegant young prince searching for love. Ryoichi Hirano was the chivalrous prince we all wanted to see.
Overall, LOVED it. And my husband and kids who are not big ballet fans, did not fall asleep. Hahaha! In fact, they lie did the entire experience. We sprang for good seats — worth it!!
