Anime Expo Lite Day 1 Experience! by @rainstormfes
Friday July 3rd, 2020
Program: Warner Bros. Japan Presents “Stay Connected with Anime”
Anime Expo held an event called Anime Expo Lite where they accommodated for the Covid-19 pandemic and put the whole con experience online. This particular program had many seiyuu and Japanese anime studio staffs as guests where they talked about three anime and their experiences with them.
The program started out with talking about Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka III (Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? III) with guests Matsuoka Yoshitsugu (voiced Bell Cranel) , Minase Inori (voiced Hestia) , Osawa Nobuhiro (from EGG FIRM, an anime production company), and Matsukura Yuji (producer from J.C. Staff, an animation studio). The beginning was just each guest answering questions that fans from all over the world submitted:
The author was asked if he was ever inspired by the voice acting of Matsuoka and Minase-san to which he answered yes and the program proceeded to show two specific scenes where Matsuoka’s and Minase-san’s voice acting inspired him (Minase-san was also asked to perform a small line live which was really cute)
They prepared a teaser image for the third season and for the big reveal Matsuoka had to tear a curtain off of a huge poster board while saying an attack name but the curtain got caught on the corner which almost made it fall 😂😂
This is the teaser image:
Tumblr media
Matsuoka was asked if there were any difficulties when recording season 3 so he talked about how Bell had gone through lots of growth throughout the 2 seasons and how he had to think about how to properly act out just how mature Bell was now compared to before, considering he’s now leader of the Hestia Familia
Minase-san answered the same question. She talked about how she made sure to try and keep in mind how close all of the characters involved are plus Hestia’s mental and social growth within the group
There was a video message from Iguchi Yuka (voiced Chigusa) since she sings the opening! There was also an announcement that sajou no hana would be performing the ending song! Both messages were very nice and cute (they spoke English x3) and both artists just talked about how they were looking forward to everyone’s reactions to their songs and to look forward to the anime.
Airing of DanMachi 3 will begin in October!🎉🎉
The next anime that they talked about was Shokugeki no Soma: Gou no Sara (Food Wars: The Fifth Plate) with guests: Matsuoka Yoshitsugu (voiced Yukihira Soma) and Yonetani Yoshitomo (animation director)
Yonetani-san was asked about how he felt about the anime and what he thought about when working on its animation. He said he wanted to express how amazing the cooking process/food was as well as wanted to excite (oh b o y 😳) the audience
Matsuoka-san was asked the same question. He talked about how since he’s been following Soma since day one he has to think a lot about his growth in Totsuki when voice acting for him. He talked about how he kinda thinks about his own high school days as well
Matsuoka Yoshitsugu, Fukuyama Jun (voiced Saiba Asahi), and Takahashi Minami (voiced Tadokoro Megumi) pre-recorded an irl shokugeki which was shown on the program!!
Matsuoka and Jun had to make a tonkatsu sauce for Takamina. Matsuoka ended up winning because Jun was chaotic asf when he made his xD (he put dried fish and squid along with peanut butter and nutella so there were just tons of flavors trying to be the main thing)
Matsuoka was asked which lines were more memorable for him, other than Soma’s: he talked about how whenever he had to record the monologues when dishes are being made and when they’re being presented was difficult since it would be hard to express a good portrayal of Soma’s energy if he didn’t even know what he was talking about (so on the side he had to keep using wiki to understand what Soma was even talking about lol)
Question about the production of the anime: Yonetani-san talked about how there were lots of complicated words they had to use; there were lots of cuts in certain scenes (like when presenting the dishes) made to try and portray the energy that they wanted in the anime
Someone asked about where the producers get ideas about the ending theme sequences: Yonetani-san’s used the songs as inspiration for the backgrounds used for the ending themes and also tried to relate to all of the cooking and the theme of high schoolers just going through life etc
The next and last anime talked about was JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind. It starts out with a video made where Ono Kensho (voiced Giorno Giorvanna) and two producers from David Production (Kasama) and Warner Bros Japan (Omori Hiroyuki) are questioned.
Apparently during production they actually count how many ‘ora’s and ‘muda’s etc when they do stand cries! But when OnoKen went to Koyasu Takehito (voiced Dio Brando) to ask about counting his ‘muda’s but never needed to, he just synced with the animation which surprised OnoKen xD
Next, they talked about the anime-only scene of Giorno giving gelato to a kid. The staffs wanted to show how kind Giorno was despite eventually becoming a gang-star. The story itself if also personal to Kasama-san since he had actually went to Italy and had experienced intense heat there and went to a gelato stand so he wanted to preserve that memory to animation
They mentioned how they purposely put characters that are later properly introduced in the anime within frames earlier on so that manga readers are even more hyped up and anime-only people could go back and see those little easter eggs for themselves and appreciate the little hints given which I absolutely love. AND they specifically mentioned that they wanted Giorno to do the famous Dio pose, saying they felt that they needed to live up to fans’ expectations so considering how dedicated of a fan base Jojo has, they decided to put that little nod toward Dio’s pose with Giorno doing it too
They talked about how the second theme for Golden Wind was hard to make since they needed to match or one up the first theme (Fighting Gold). It took a while to produce the second theme’s music and ideas presented were rejected three times before finally being accepted. And they had already decided to make an alternate animation for it as well, which made the process to make the music even harder.
The man himself that produced it (as well as the entire soundtrack for Golden Wind), Kanno Yugo, was a guest for the live broadcast! He talked about how, considering his experience with parts 3 and 4 with their opening themes, he felt he needed to try and one up himself for part 5′s
He compared making music for Jojo felt like competing in the Olympics since its a difficult job to one up yourself every time there’s a new season for the anime. Since he started working with Jojo since part 3 and made such iconic main character themes since then, needing to make something as amazing as those themes was tough but he definitely delivered in the end
Overall an amazing experience! 😊
I loved every moment of the program! So glad to finally see seiyuu live at events, considering what’s been going on in the world recently. Definitely made my day!

A Yuri on Ice Miraculous Ladybug AU
Yuuri Katsuki
The Katsuki’s moved to St. Petersburg when Yuuri was three. They started an authentic Japanese style hot springs hotel and have actually done quite well. Well enough to send Yuuri to Madame Lilia’s with a partial scholarship. He has grown up being a part of two worlds, with both his Japanese heritage and his Russian upbringing influencing him. Yuuri is a sixteen year old student at Madame Baranovskaya’s Ballet Institute. He is in Madame’s advanced class but doesn’t feel like he deserves to be there (but he actually really does). He works hard to keep up with the rest of the class even while battling his anxiety. He absolutely loves to dance though and dances quite beautifully when alone. He is shy by nature and doesn’t have a lot of friends. And the worst part of everything is that he is in the same class as his crush and idol, Victor Nikiforov. But Yuuri has an alternate identity. He is also the superhero called Ladybug. The ladybug miraculous is inhabited by a cute little kwamis named Minami. He uses his miraculous to save those in trouble and to defeat people who have been corrupted by an evil akuna. While he’s ladybug, Yuuri transforms into a confident and brave (and sexy) crime fighter. While he’s ladybug, he slicks back his hair and doesn’t need his glasses.
Victor Nikiforov
Victor is the son of Andrei Nikiforov, a fashion designer and secretly Hawk Moth, the supervillain and holder of the butterfly miraculous. Victor’s mother is dead and his relationship with his father is often contentious and on-the-rocks. Victor is seventeen, one of the top dancers in Madame Baranovskaya’s Ballet Institute, and a model on the side. Victor is confident and flirty and gorgeous all of the time. He’s popular in school and on social media. But although he is surrounded by people, he is prodigiously lonely. People are always either intimidated by his perfection, rivals for his top spot, or way too obsessed with him. Victor also has an alternate identity. He is Black Cat, the holder of the cat miraculous. The cat miraculous is inhabited by a temperamental kwamis called Yuri. Victor uses his powers to fight alongside Ladybug on their mission to fight evil in St. Petersburg. While he’s Black Cat, he feels like he can be more like himself and not the perfect doll that everyone expects him to be when he’s just Victor. Victor is literally in love with Ladybug and longs to know every part of him.
Phichit Chulanont
He is 16 and Yuuri’s best friend and is a social media icon. He is also a wonderful photographer and his favorite subject is both Yuuri and Ladybug, who he knows is the same person. Yuuri is a bad liar when it comes to his best friend. Phichit is also Crimson Vixen, the holder of the fox miraculous which is inhabited by the sweet kwamis, Guang-Hong.
Christophe Giacometti
He is seventeen and Victor’s best friend and also a model. He is very comfortable in his sexuality and always has a boyfriend, his current one a first year university student named Masami. He is also Queen Bee, the holder of the bee miraculous, who is inhabited by argumentative twin kwamis, Sara and Michele.
JJ Leroy
He is sixteen, the son of the mayor, and sees himself as Victor’s rival. But he is almost as lonely as Victor is and all he really wants is to have some real friends, but his personality is often abrasive. He is also Green Shield, the holder of the turtle miraculous, inhabited by the stoic kwamis, Otabek.

YOI Boots&Blades - a comprehensive list
AKA The Encyclopedia of Yuri!!! on Ice Boots and Blades Although the rigor of animating makes it difficult to keep the precise details in every scene, clearer DVD/Blu-ray images and the released production notes with character sketches make it possible to identify many of the brands and models.
I want to preface this post saying that all of this - the researching, compilation, and decisions - was a practice in insanity. Some boots and blades were fairly straightforward to identify, while others involved poring over the size of toe-pick teeth, the shape of the mounting plates, and prioritizing certain design details (i.e. back of boot) over others (i.e. number of hooks). We see quite a few styles of boots and blades in YOI. To the best of my ability, I’ve pinned down boots and blades for every skater (16 skaters!) in Yuri on Ice, and in the case of vague production drafts resulting in multiple options, I’ve offered a few alternate choices with my reasoning.
This post is super long with dozens of pictures from the show, production drafts (from the Setting Material Collection), and boot and blade websites. For length’s sake, I've made a quick list above a cut and left the expanded notes and pics below. For boots, I’m looking at EDEA, GRAF, Risport, Riedell, and Jackson Ultima. For blades, I’m primarily looking at John Wilson and MK Blades unless the design is different enough to warrant referring to other brands.
Formatting goes as follows: Character name: brand of boots - model; finish (leather or suede), blade type (traditional or revolution); brand - model
---------------------
Yuuri Katsuki: KOSUGI; leather; traditional blades; John Wilson - Gold Seal Victor Nikiforov: GRAF - Edmonton Special Classic; leather; traditional blades; John Wilson - Pattern 99 Yuri Plisetsky: Jackson Ultima - Elite; suede; revolution blades; John Wilson - Pattern 99 Rev  Christophe Giacometti: unspecified brand but suggests Risport/Riedell/EDEA - I suggest Risport - Royal Elite; suede; traditional blades; John Wilson - Gold Seal  Otabek Altin: unspecified brand but suggests Risport/Riedell/EDEA - I suggest EDEA - Concerto; suede; traditional blades; John Wilson - Pattern 99 or MK Blades - Phantom Phichit Chulanont: EDEA (“EDEO” in-series) - Concerto; suede; traditional blades; Jackson Ultima - Matrix Freestyle (or Matrix Supreme) Emil Nekola: Unspecified but same close-up picture as Phichit’s looks like EDEA/Riedell/GRAF - I suggest Riedell - Aria; unspecified finish; traditional blades; Jackson Ultima - Matrix Freestyle (or Matrix Supreme)  Jean-Jaques Leroy:  EDEA - Ice Fly ; non-leather; revolution blades; John Wilson - Pattern 99 Rev Seung-gil Lee: EDEA - Ice Fly; non-leather; traditional blades; John Wilson - Gold Seal Leo de la Iglesia: EDEA - Ice Fly; non-leather; traditional blades; John Wilson - Gold Seal Minami Kenjirou: Risport - RF1 Elite; leather; traditional blade; John Wilson - Gold Seal Guang-Hong Ji: Risport (“RIZPORT” in-series) - RF1 Elite; leather; traditional blades; indistinct but possibly John Wilson - Gold Seal or MK Blades - Gold Star Michele Crispino:  Jackson Ultima - Elite; suede; revolution blades; MK Blades - Phantom Rev Sara Crispino: Jackson Ultima - Supreme; leather; revolution blades; MK Blades - Phantom Rev Georgi Popovich: unspecified brand (refer to Chris/Otabek/Phichit/Emil for possibilities); leather; revolution blades; John Wilson - Gold Seal Rev Milla Babicheva: Riedell - 2010 Fusion; leather; traditional blades; indistinct
Other Skaters (small section at the end) include: Yakov, Yuuko, Nishigori, and the triplets
Diving into Details
For reference, traditional blades look like:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Revolution blades look like:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Specifically, you’ll want to check out the pages for the John Wilson Gold Seal (Yuuri), John Wilson Pattern 99 (Victor), and John Wilson Pattern 99 Rev (Yurio).
There are plenty of other blade brands, but John Wilson and MK Blades are the leading ones, and the majority of elite-level skaters use them, so I’m going to venture that these two brands became the main models for the characters’ blades. Also, blade designs look incredibly similar to each other without the etched logos, and I doubt the designers would be looking at lesser-known brands unless they intended to make the blade a significant point. For this reason, I decided not to research obscure brands and models to match the character’s blades.
The same applies to the brand of boots I reference. The main brands I reference here are EDEA, GRAF, Risport, Riedell, and Jackson. Those are familiar names to figure skaters/figure skating fans. I looked into GAM, WIFA, S.P. Teri... but the designs didn’t match as well, and looking for lesser-known and more infrequently used brands wouldn’t merit the effort.
Character name:
brand of boots
model
finish (leather or suede)
blade type (traditional or revolution)
brand - model
Yuuri Katsuki:
(I made a prior post here)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
KOSUGI
leather
traditional blades
John Wilson - Gold Seal
the toe-pick has the distinct curve instead of the straight edge that the pattern 99 has. The mounting plate that attaches to the sole is solid, whereas the MK Blade equivalent “Gold Star” would have a hole.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Victor Nikiforov:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
GRAF
Edmonton Special Classic
the simple design, four hooks on the side, v-notch, and back design with the cut-out oblong shape (where the GRAF “G” is supposed to go) are the keys here.
Note especially the v-notch (flex notch) which is an easily identifiable design difference between the Edmonton and the Washington (which is rated for extreme stiffness/support).
leather
traditional blades
In the production notes, it seems like parts of the MK blades - Phantom are mixed in. The main mounting plate that attaches to the flat of the foot is drawn with a flat bottom edge, and the plate’s hole has a small indentation that makes it look heart-shaped instead of the oval-shaped John Wilson equivalent. The top two teeth are slightly longer whereas the John Wilson equivalent has the bottom two teeth slightly longer.
John Wilson - Pattern 99 These are the blades that Stephane Lambiel uses, which in turn are the blades that Victor’s are modeled after. In the anime itself, the blades seem to be drawn as the John Wilson model with an oval-shaped hole in the main mounting plate, and the heel mounting plate drawn with straight edges instead of with the indentation present in MK Blades’ version. The only inconsistency is the outer outline of the main mounting plate -- the Wilson design should be heart-shaped.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yuri Plisetsky:
(prior post here)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
 Jackson Ultima
Elite, although the Elite has a stiffness of 85 and is rated for doubles. EDEA has a model with a stiffness of 85 and rates it for triples/quads, but I’m not an elite skater who could compare the Jackson and EDEA models and see if the support feels the same. So, we’ll assume the appearance is from the Elite while the stiffness&support is more like the Supreme.
Suede (although drawn in the anime as leather)
Revolution blades
MK blades - Phantom Rev or John Wilson - Pattern 99 Rev
The straight line of the toe-pick makes this a Phantom/Pattern 99 instead of a Gold Star/Seal with the curve. While the production drafts have a solid plate on the bottom of the boot (like Yuuri’s Gold Seal and the Gold Seal Rev), this was corrected in the anime to follow the Phantom/Pattern 99’s design.
Arguing for Phantom Rev: the teeth between the top-most and bottom-most ones are about equal in size whereas the Wilson equivalent would have a larger tooth second from the bottom.
Arguing for Pattern 99 Rev, there’s something fitting about Yurio using the new generation of Victor’s blades. This model is pretty famous. The distinct shape would immediately be recognized by Japanese viewers as “Yuzuru Hanyu’s blades.” I have no doubt the creators were aware of this. The blades are so iconic that I doubt the creators would be using the MK model instead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Christophe Giacometti:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
unspecified brand
details were added to the back of the boot in the anime. I would like to offer the Risport Royal Elite for consideration. The back has the V shaped detail, the heel is a simple design as opposed to the Royal Exclusive, and it’s marked for triple/quads with stiffness of 90.
If we strictly go with the production notes and rule out the Risport Royal Elite because of its design details, then perhaps he has the RF1 Elite, EDEA Concerto, or Riedell Aria (check Minami, Otabek and Emil below, respectively). I doubt it’s a Jackson, because that brand has distinct back designs which are animated with other characters.
the production notes say “no highlight” so I assume the finish is supposed to be suede or a dull leather. Despite this, some shots are very glossy....
traditional blade
John Wilson - Gold Seal
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Otabek Altin:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
unspecified brand but the plate on the heel suggests Risport/Riedell/EDEA.
I would say it’s the EDEA Concerto due to the clean seam in the back, the simple side design, and lack of highlights.
suede
traditional blade
John Wilson - Pattern 99 or MK Blades - Phantom
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Phichit Chulanont:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
EDEA skates ( “EDEO” in-series)
EDEA - Concerto.
although the close-up boot&blade sketch is the same as Emil’s and has a different side-design (more on that in Emil’s section below).
suede
Traditional blade;
Jackson Ultima - Matrix Freestyle (or Matrix Supreme?)
The little edge detail makes the drawings look closer to the Riedell ECLIPSE blades - Quantum. However, the mounting plate of the blade has the lobes of Matrix and not the triangular hole of Quantum. Also, the gold color of Phichit’s blades in his Phichit on Ice daydream point to the various colors that Matrix offers.
The straight line of the toe pick looks like the Matrix Freestyle rather than the Matrix Supreme, but almost every Men’s figure skater who uses Jackson Ultima blades uses the Matrix Supreme - including Michael Christian Martinez, Jason Brown, and Evgeni Plushenko - so it may well be that Phichit’s blades are intended to be the Matrix Supreme.
They probably used the Matrix Nova for design reference, too, since there are easily accessible full pictures for this model.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Emil Nekola:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
essentially the same close-up picture as Phichit’s boots, so:
Unspecified but looks like EDEA in the back (clean, simple seam) and GRAF or Riedell on the side (the notched “V” and four hooks).
leather
Riedell Aria
if it was suede, I might ignore the notched V (flex notch) and suggest EDEA Concerto because of the simple design and clean back seam, but the Aria is similarly simple in design and has the flex notch. The reason I’m not going with GRAF is because the backs of their boots have slightly more complex looks than Riedell’s.
traditional blade
Riedell ECLIPSE blades - Quantum or Jackson Ultima - Matrix Freestyle (or Matrix Supreme)
I wouldn’t say it’s the Riedell Eclipse, because those are rated for singles/doubles, but I’m including the picture here because the sketch looks spot-on.
The same reasoning as Phichit’s blades would apply for determining between Matrix Freestyle and Supreme.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jean-Jacques Leroy:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
EDEA
Ice Fly
the designs on the side are a giveaway. They’re a popular model, so it’s not hard to recognize them.
technically the Ice Fly is a non-leather, new tech material - no highlights for J.J.’s boots
revolution blades
John Wilson Pattern 99 Rev

Seung-gil Lee:

technically non-leather, but this time with glossy highlights

Leo de la Iglesia:

EDEA
Ice Fly
technically non-leather, but looks like Leo has glossy highlights for the finish on his boots
traditional blades
John Wilson - Gold Seal
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Minami Kenjirou:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Risport (classic “R” logo on the heel)
RF1 Elite (high quality pic here).
the design is fairly simple in the side and the heel, production notes mention the “R” is gold, and the back of the boot seems to have a single line running on one side
leather (unspecified, but looks like highlights are drawn)
traditional blades
John Wilson - Gold Seal
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Guang-Hong Ji:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Risport (“RIZPORT” in-series). Instead of the classic Risport “R,” the plate on the heel has the full brand name.
RF1 Elite - due to its simplicity and rating for triples/quads
leather (same as Minami above)
traditional blades
It looks like Gold Seal/Gold Star in the drafts but lack of decent closeups makes this hard to definitively identify as a gold seal/star or a pattern 99/phantom type of blade.
Tumblr media
Michele Crispino:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jackson Ultima (there’s a plate on the back of the heel)
As with Yurio, the design is likely also based on the Elite. What we can see of the back design shows a tapering going from bottom-to-top similar to the Elite, as opposed to the rather straight design of the Supreme.
suede
revolution blades
MK Blades Phantom Rev (check Sara below)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sara Crispino:
Tumblr media
no boot/blade image in the production book, but in-series pictures reveal them as Jackson Ultima - Supreme due to the placement of the brand plate, the design of the back of the boot, and the white hooks.
Despite being rated the same 85 stiffness like the Men’s Elite, these are apparently capable of supporting Triples/Quads.
leather
revolution blades
MK Blades - Phantom Rev
The coloring of the hardware doesn’t have much to do with my decision as I’ve seen pictures of John Wilson being both dark and light. The reason I went with MK Blades was because of Carolina Kostner, although she uses the Gold Star Rev model. Due to the straight line of the toe pick, Sara is using the Phantom Rev.
Tumblr media
Georgi Popovich:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
unspecified brand - no brand plates were drawn, so I can’t narrow down brands like I did with Chris or Otabek. All we know is that it’s a simple design. Refer to Victor, Chris, Otabek/Phichit, or Emil.
leather (because of the highlights drawn)
Revolution blades
John Wilson Gold Seal Rev - due to the solid mounting plate and not a plate with a center hole.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Milla Babicheva:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Riedell
2010 Fusion
leather
traditional blades
might be the same blades as in the product picture (Eclipse Pinnacle Titanium), or it might be one of the two big brands. There are no in-series closeups to reference for the final outcome.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Other skaters:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There aren’t enough close pictures of Yakov’s skates to be able to tell what he wears. All we know is that he has traditional blades. I would guess for his 70+ year-old feet he has instructor boots like the kind Riedell makes, but who knows.
Yuuko and Nishigori also don’t have closeups or multiple images to try figuring out what they wore as kids (forget about adulthood - we're given even less images). Just going by the toe pick, the blades look like the entry level John Wilson Majestic or MK Double Star. Yuuko might be experienced enough to be doing all single jumps and moving onto doubles, so she might be on the Coronation Ace. Definitely when she was 13 she would be on an intermediate or competitive blade. I’d guess for their boots, either Kosugi since that’s the local brand (based in Osaka) and Yuuri uses it, or more likely a more prevalent brand like Risport or EDEA. Then again, who’s to say that Kosugi isn’t popular in-series?
Or perhaps they weren’t popular back when they were kids and Yuuri is currently making them popular.
The triplets skate too, so that makes them skaters to be included here. My best guess is that their mom and dad gave them the brand they have experience with. For those who can’t tell, Loop is the youngest with the ponytail, Lutz is the middle child with the bun, and Axel is the eldest with the pigtails (she’s the eldest, so of course she needs two ponytails and not just one!).
A couple of notes on brands and designs:
Jackson tends to be recommended for wider feet, EDEA and Risport are known for suiting narrower feet. I don’t think GRAF or Riedell have a reputation either way. All brands have narrow, medium, and wide options with different brands offering various extra degrees of narrow/wide. People have all sorts of feet shapes -- it’s possible to have a boot with wide sole and narrow heel (or vice versa), and it’s possible to order different sizes for each foot (Denis Ten has to do this). Some brands advertise heat molding technology so the boot fits the skater’s foot perfectly. Of course, elite-level boots come with a large price tag. $700-900 depending on brand and model. Revolution type blades are being favored by jumpers while traditional type blades tend to be used by skaters who lean on the artistic side. There are plenty of exceptions, but that’s kind of the image. “Rev = jumper” Rev blades used to be exclusive to higher level elements - they were made for top-level skaters who do doubles/triples and triples/quads. Probably because Rev blades are new technology and super expensive, they aren’t made for recreational level skating, and it’s only recently that a single/double jumps-level version has been made available. I guess this is partially why having a Rev blade gives the image of a high-level jumper. Blades are also expensive - the Wilson and MK blades referenced here run about $650-900 on some sites. Jackson Ultima Matrix, Risport Eclipse, and Paramount blades are also around that price range - Matrix and Paramount are slightly more affordable with the $500+ range.
Colored Blades -- We all know about Victor, but I want to point out Yurio who uses blades that are quite a bit darker than what normal Rev blades look like. They are very consistently dark grey/black, so I don’t think you can blame this on the lighting.
Earlier, I pointed out the John Wilson instagram picture of the black blades, and we know Stephane Lambiel has his Pattern 99 blades custom colored to gold, but there are so many more options.
Paramount Skates are known for their nearly limitless options for colored blades. Their 5 stock colors include icy pink, icy blue, icy purple, polished, and jet black, but you can order any combination of color -- even tri-colored blades. Jackson Ultima’s blade line doesn’t offer the impressive range of Paramount, but they do offer stock colors in gold, black, pink, and lilac. It’s worth noting that colored blades aren’t some magical gift given to champions or highly accomplished skaters.
Final comments
It was taking me so long to clean the pictures of the setting/production book pages that I was losing steam and knew this post would never be released if I waited until I was done with those. So for now, this post has the clearest phone photos I could take, and I’ll be replacing them with cleaned versions as I finish each one.
I’m just really relieved that this is essentially done (done? done???!!) after working on it over a span of 6 or so weeks. Working during Anime Fest in Dallas, during Labor Day weekend -- I even dreamed about allocating the correct boots and blades to the respective character!
You could probably write meta about the boot and blade types that the skaters have........ I’ll just see myself out.

A New Character Named "Yui" Inspired by Idol Time PriPara's Yui to Join Kiratto Pri☆Chan
The official Twitter for the TV anime Kiratto Pri☆Chan has announced two new characters will join its story soon - Yui and Yui's mascot. Yui is obviously inspired by Yui Yumekawa, the protagonist of the Pretty series' previous installment Idol Time PriPara (2017-2018). But according to the tweet, this Yui is going to have a different last name than Yumekawa in the Pri☆Chan story.
Kiratto Pri☆Chan has already had two characters based on the protagonists of the previous Pretty series - Aira Nanahoshi who is inspired by Aira Harune in Pretty Rhythm: Aurora Dream (2011-2012) and Naru Shiawase who is inspired by Naru Ayase in Pretty Rhythm: Rainbow Live (2013-2014). So Yui's appearance is not surprise for the fans of Pretty series, but it is a very happy one.
With the addition of Yui, what fans expect most right now is, of course, the appearance of Laala Manaka, the protagonist of PriPara (2014-2017) and the most iconic character in the whole Pretty series. Will it ever happen in the Pri☆Chan story? Wait and see.
Meanwhile, the unnamed character who is introduced only as "Yui's mascot" looks just like Kuma, the mascot manager on SoLaMi Smile in PriPara. In the story of Idol Time PiPara, however, Yui Yumekawa had her own manager named Punicorn. How is their relationship set up in the Pri☆Chan story?

How did you decide what abilities to give characters in My Hero, Yuri?
Once I decided that yes, I was actually going to write this thing, I sat down and started figuring out the quirks/hero names for everyone. I think it took a few days to really get them down the way I liked.
Some minor spoilers here, mostly RE: Yuuri’s quirk. Also guess who has the strongest quirk in the whole cast? No really, it’s not who you think lol.
Yuuri’s and Victor’s I knew immediately. Because duh one of them needed to have ice powers and I love letting Victor use them because it means I get to have Chris toss him all kinds of Ice Queen/Elsa/Disney Princess jokes. It fits him well too, because it’s both powerful yet artistic.
His superhero name came from one of those name generators when I put in ice powers and I loved it so much I created a backstory to match it. Winter Monsoon just has this extra feel to it, like the guy made the monsoon season have snow he’s just that extra.
When setting the story up, I knew that Yuuri would be quirkless. I gave him training in fencing, dancing and self-taught martial arts via YouTube. Because he actually has to think about what to do instead of just using a power, it actually gives him an upper hand compared to a lot of the quirk-users who have become too reliant on their quirks. Of course, he underestimates his ability and thinks he’s nothing special. Bless.
I wanted Yuuri’s name to tie to Victor’s, so that’s where his came from- tying the Great Wave off Kanagawa to the beach where Victor first demonstrated his quirk. I originally had him rename himself when he went unmasked, but I grew so fond of Hokusai Wave that I’ve kept it.
Chris I knew I wanted to have a quirk parallel to Victor’s so he got fire. When I hit upon his hero name I knew it was perfect. Only Chris would go by Smolder and think he was so suave for it lol.
Yurio’s I knew had to be something cat related, so I gave him feline abilities as a quirk. I immediately knew I wanted his outfit to be something like Chat Noir from Miraculous Ladybug but of course, in leopard print. Because bless this child, he would. I gave him the name The Leopard so there’s this ongoing gag about people leaving off the THE and him having a fit over it.
Phichit I knew I wanted to somehow tie in his love of selfies. So I started toying around with various tech-related quirks. I came up with his hero name of Freeze Frame and pretty much used it to base his quirk off of. So yeah, he pretty much can freeze a villain temporarily by snapping photos. Soooo Phichit.
As for the rest of the cast, I tried to go with something that I felt tied to their character or I felt worked well as a quirk for them. I also didn’t want to have a lot of similar powers, so I had to make sure I wasn’t just giving everyone elemental powers or whatnot.
Michele and Sara I knew I wanted to have similar powers since they’re twins. So Michele has a Hardening quirk ala Kirishima from BNHA and Sara has the ability to petrify anything she looks at. They both have hero names based off Greek myth- Atlas for Michele and Medusa for Sara.
Emil I ended up using Electrification because he has that Cyberpunk-type program and I felt it fit his personality as well. Voltaic is another thank you random hero name generator.
Mila has super strength since apparently she’s put her hockey-ex in canon in the hospital, we figured it worked. Physique fit well as her name because it sounds pretty but it’s about her strength.
Otabek had me stuck for awhile, but @accioharo suggested something like Tokoyami from BNHA and I really liked that idea. He’s basically got this whole knight look going on and has a sentient shadow he can control. So yeah, name is pretty self-explanatory as Shadow Knight.
Minami I knew I wanted to have something flight related, one because I needed someone with a flight quirk and two because I felt it fit his personality. He’s very excitable. Aerostat is another term for an airship or hot air balloon and since his flight quirk is more like that than say winged flight I used it.
J.J. I wanted to have something flashy that he could be showy about, so I gave him the ability to pause time for a brief period. Of course, he uses this time to stop said villain and then strike his iconic JJ pose right as the time comes back to normal. Hero name is just King JJ because bless him he would.
Seung-Gil I wanted something that fit his kind of personality, so I gave him a Canine Speech quirk. I figure he’s probably happier working with his dog than most of these nutcases. He goes by Lone Wolf.
Guang Hong was one of the last ones I came up with and I tried to think of what angles of powers I hadn’t already done. He has a force field quirk and his name Pingzhang is the Chinese for that.
Leo I immediately pictured as having something like Lucio in Overwatch. His love of music is such a part of his character and he’s such an upbeat guy that I thought letting sound wave control be his quirk would be awesome. Tiempo is his hero name because he works with the tempo of the music.
Georgi actually has the most powerful quirk out of the whole cast. He’s basically a reality warper ala Doctor Strange or Scarlet Witch, but he’s such a drama queen and gets so caught up in his theatrics that he doesn’t really use his powers to the full extent of his ability. His hero name is Caradoc after the character his SP outfit was based on from the Bourne Sleeping Beauty remake.
