"John, let’s do a shot for the warden..." prompting Cash to flip the bird at the camera. The story behind the famous photo of Johnny Cash giving the finger during his 1969 San Quentin State Prison gig taken by Jim Marshall. "It is probably the most ripped off photograph in the history of the world.” Happy Birthday to legendary photographer Jim Marshall. @jimmarshallphoto Photo of Jim by James Emmett via @reelartpress ✌️❤️🎵#jimmarshall #johnnycash #sanquentin #flipthebird #rockandroll #legendsneverdie #musicphotography #musichistory #legend #icon #countrymusic #rockroyalty #ringoffire #walktheline #rocknroll #blendergallery (at Blender Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/Btb77Udg9rL/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1wpyaqkvfnd5n

This guy is such an inspiration 💯 Curtis "Wall Street" Carroll. As an incarcerated individual, Carroll knows the power of a dollar. While in prison, he taught himself how to read and trade stocks, and now he shares a simple, powerful message: we all need to be more savvy with our money. via TedTalks #curtiscarroll #wallstreet #financialliteracy #financialfreedom #sanquentin #sanquentinnews https://www.instagram.com/p/Brb1Gn3HBzR/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1baeiqoa78jvg

#REPOST @brightblackcandle with @get__repost__app Black August is here y'all! Throughout the month, we'll be posting all about Black August. What it is. How it emerged. How we honor it. Today is a 101, but we'll be doing some deep dives throughout the month. We hope y'all enjoy the series!!!!! I first learned about Black August when I moved to Durham. Each summer, (pre-Covid!!!!!) there's a festival called "Black August in the Park," where folks connect, eat, dance, share, and laugh. It's the epitome of Black joy, and caused me to dig into it more. I learned that Black August is a time to pay tribute to Black revolutionaries, resistance, freedom fighters, and political prisoners. It's a time to raise awareness about how Black folks have, and continue to, fight against oppression. And it's a time to forefront the importance of self-care as we continue the battles our ancestors began generations ago. Black August was initiated in 1979 by the Black Guerilla Family, when a group of incarcerated individuals in San Quentin, decided to honor the assassination of Black Panther brothers Jonathan and George Jackson (a LOT more on them this month!). They were murdered in August, a number of revolutionaries -- like Marcus Garvey and Fred Hampton -- were born in August. And a number of acts of resistance like the Haitian Revolution, the Nat Turner Rebellion, and the Watts and Ferguson uprisings were all in August. Many folks who commemorate Black August delve deep into learnings about Black liberation, and some folks also fast. Personally, I weave in radical meditation practices, and also try to set intentions based in hope, rather than fear. Once I learned about Black August, I was hooked, and can't wait to share more with y'all throughout the month! #brightblack #brightblackcandles #candles #comeshinewithus #blackaugust #blackaugustresistance #georgejackson #politicalprisoners #webuyblack #blackpantherparty #jonathanjackson #soledadbrothers #freedomfighters #blackhistory #ushistory #americanhistory #sanquentin #blackliberation #blackpower #marcusgarvey #natturner #prisonreform #criminaljusticereform #revolutionary #resistance #freedomfighters #allblackeverything # https://www.instagram.com/p/CSDR0Z6nF2E/?utm_medium=tumblr

If I told you that one of the Founding members of the Mexican Mafia was a White boy named Joe “peg leg” Morgan you’d probably think I was crazy… think again! Joseph Morgan (born Joseph Međugorac; April 10, 1929– November 8, 1993) was the first non-Hispanic member of the Mexican Mafia. He received the nickname "Pegleg" by authorities because of his prosthetic leg. The son of Croatian immigrants, Peg Leg grew up in a primarily Mexican and Croatian neighborhood in San Pedro. Later, he was raised by his mother in a Hispanic neighborhood in Boyle Heights. In the late 1930s, he joined the Ford MaraVilla street gang, one of the oldest documented gangs in Los Angeles. In 1946, Morgan beat to death the husband of his 32-year-old girlfriend and buried the body in a shallow grave. While awaiting trial, he escaped using the identification papers of a fellow inmate awaiting transfer to a forestry camp. He was recaptured and sentenced to nine years at San Quentin State Prison. He was only 17 at the time. Morgan was well respected within the ranks of the Mexican Mafia and became a high-ranking member. His connections with cocaine and heroin suppliers in Mexico helped pave the foundation for the Mexican Mafia's narcotics distribution throughout California. Morgan was able to persuade the Aryan Brotherhood to forge a loose alliance with La Eme, due to having the Black Guerilla Family as a mutual rival. Allegedly, Morgan made diplomatic relations with the Los Angeles Mafia through Michael Rizzitello, whom he and Rodolfo Cadena met during the nine-year sentence of the reputed mobster in Chino for a string of armed robberies during the 1970s. #pegleg #peglegmorgan #joemorgan #joepeglegmorgan #mexicanmafia #laeme #maravilla #fordmaravilla #losangeles #hispanic #mexican #sanquentin #folsom #corcoran #deptofcorrections #penalsystem #california #mafia #mafiabook #americanme #edwardjamesolmos #straightenedout #boyleheights #westcovina #covina #eastla #losangeles #cityofangels #lamafia #lacosanostra #cosanostra (at North Phoenix, Phoenix) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQo91bMlr6k/?utm_medium=tumblr

California releasing more prisoners to curb spread of coronavirus
Tumblr media
Gov. Gavin Newsom will release approximately 8,000 people incarcerated inside California’s prison system by the end of August in an effort to slow coronavirus outbreaks at several facilities. A letter to inmates Thursday said eligible inmates will receive a credit on their sentence effective Aug. 1 to clear space during the pandemic. “These actions are taken to provide for the health and safety of the incarcerated population and staff,” Corrections Secretary Ralph Diaz said in a statement. “We aim to implement these decompression measures in a way that aligns both public health and public safety.” Since prison officials announced the first positive cases in late March, 10 of the state’s 35 prisons have had outbreaks. Among the institutions most dramatically affected is San Quentin, California’s oldest and most well-known prison. Infections in the prison rose from zero to more than 1,000 after the transfer of 121 men from the California Institution for Men in Chino. Folsom State Prison and five other facilities are also included in the plan. Inmates at the prisons who are age 30 and older and who meet the eligibility criteria "are immediately eligible for release," the agency says. Younger inmates will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Read the full article
