Similarly, Johnson & Johnson also introduced a sanitary towel called Lister’s Towel in the 1890s. The closest prototype to contemporary sanitary pads came in 1921 when Kotex pads entered the US markets.

Even though it is available in the market, only upper-class women can afford its price. Most women continued with the traditional methods.

Sanitary pads are not a luxury but a necessity. A country where only 56% of women use sanitary pads the government started imposing a tax on sanitary pads. Around 41% school-girls in Bangladesh do not attend classes during their periods and 73% of women often miss work due to infection caused by unhygienic menstrual management.

A country where the average income of the family is below BDT 10,000 ($120) per month, napkin prices range from BDT 70 - 145 ($ 0.83 - 1.72) per pack making it difficult for a girl buy sanitary napkins each month. And now there is the tax.

We are living in a country where women are the head of the government almost for the last twenty-five years; I believe policymakers should scrap the VAT on sanitary pads and supply them at cheaper prices.
