Tumblr media
sandbar shark have a large first dorsal fin, large pectoral fins and a mid-dorsal ridge. like many other shark species, sandbar sharks give birth to live young.
sandbar shark are named for the sandy flats, bays and estuaries where it's found. In fact, it's the most common species of shark in the Chesapeake Bay!
sandbar sharks  are believed to live more than 30 years. Although sandbar sharks are listed by the IUCN Red List as only Lower Risk/near threatened, they are severely overfished in the western North Atlantic.

Redoing the first post I ever did on this blog: Trying to assign a shark to CFO🦈
The first time i did this I was honestly very nervous about putting my stupid takes out into the fandom, but I'm ready now, and I have stronger CFO shark opinions. I'm linking to all the sharks' Wikipedia pages, for those interested in sharks!!
I gotta be honest, this is about Charles, but mostly this post is me sharing fun shark facts. I hope you guys are chill with that.
Same as the last time, I still have some honorable mentions.
(ALSO i tagged this post under some shark tags, this is the guy we're talking about, btw, I'd love for you guys to vote in the poll at the bottom of the post)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I considered something like the Basking Shark. However, they're quite large, and I think Charles looks harmless, so the Basking shark was out. Additionally, despite they're large size, they're pretty docile. They're one of the three species of sharks that eat plankton! But, I envisioned a slightly more slender, swift hunter type of shark.
I also considered a type of Thresher Shark, as I liked their unique appearance, but ultimately I couldn't decide on a species. I think I wanted Charles to be one just because they have cool caudal fins.
I very briefly considered The Great White, because to most people that's the shark. But I just wasn't feeling it. They're cute, but I don't see Charles being one.
In the original post I listed The Silky Shark, but I'm taking this back, because now that I think about it, I just wanted Charles to be a Silky Shark because they're my favorite....
Tumblr media
Moving on to the real choices now.
Bull Shark (Carcharhinus leucas)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Bull Shark is one of my favorite sharks. It's in the family Carcharhinidae, which makes it a Requiem Shark! (which is also where I get my tumblr name from) I didn't do this on purpose, but all the sharks in this list are actually Requiem Sharks. Requiem sharks are known for being very fast and efficient hunters, and of course the Bull Shark is no exception. Bull Sharks are known to be aggressive towards people, alongside the Great White and the Tiger shark (though don't let a certain awesome 1975 movie fool you, you're odds of being attacked by sharks are very slim, these bad boys are just know for doing it the most) Bull sharks are euryhaline, meaning they can adapt to water of varying salinity, meaning they can do just fine in freshwater. This sort of adaptability reminds me of Charles, and tbh, I think Bull Sharks just kind of look like him some how.
Blue Shark (Prionace glauca)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Blue Shark looks like a goober. You can find them fucking everywhere, check out this map from Wikipedia. They're one of the most wide-spread shark species!
The Blue Shark's name isn't a stretch, they really are blue! Curious, and not typically aggressive, they've been known to approach divers. They're also known to be more social than other sharks, and sometimes travel in schools separated by sex, at least as juveniles. It's slender, streamlined appearance makes me think of Charles, in the sense that somehow the Blue shark looks like it'd wear a suit, but maybe more like a silly colored suit. Like blue! The long pectoral fins also remind me of him, for some reason. I don't know why, it's not like he has long arms?
If you're familiar with the BLÅHAJ, you may know the blue shark! The common name for Prionace glauca in both Swedish and Dutch is blåhaj, which just means Blue Shark!
Tumblr media
Oceanic Whitetip Shark (Carcharhinus longimanus)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A shark with a very good design, look at that aesthetically pleasing coloring and the rounded fins? This is someone's OC shark, i swear. The Oceanic Whitetip is listed as critically endangered by the IUCN. They cannot pump water through their gills, so they're one of the shark species that has to always be moving! They're more leisurely while swimming, and have been known to breach the water.
Honestly, I think this is a good candidate for Charles shark because I just love the way these sharks look!
Sandbar shark (Carcharhinus plumbeus)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This silly guy is the Sandbar shark, one of the largest costal sharks in the world! They're known for their brownish coloring (another common name for them is the brown shark) and their tall dorsal fin. They also have rather large pectoral fins. They are listed as endangered, as they are hunted for their fins. I chose this shark honestly because it's brown, and the aforementioned tall dorsal fin. I was mostly choosing the sharks based on looks, and this one easily looks the most like Charles to me.
Tumblr media
Anyways, thanks for reading my silly shark post! When I did this like, three months ago, I was working on this AU thingy, but I'd got totally sidetracked trying to assign a damn shark to Charles. The original idea was he was gonna be like... y'know, a mermaid or something, but I never got around to working on it, mostly because of the sharks. If you have any interest in it, I could do Dethklok/any one else from MTL as sharks. Honestly, i'd love an excuse to combine my interests.
Oh also.

Odysea Aquarium, Scottsdale AZ
Mom took me and my sister to the Odysea last month for my birthday! Sorry I haven't posted sooner but HERE ARE THE PICS!
Tumblr media
This window over the downstairs bathroom sink was officially voted coolest bathroom in the USA (the plaque said 2017, I think). Why? Because it views into the Voyager shark tank. Trevally, other fish, and FIVE DIFFERENT SPECIES OF SHARKS swim past this window and will even go behind the bubble screen while people are washing their hands. I couldn't get a pic of the sandbar shark when it swam by the window bc it went by pretty quick. But this restroom is by the front entrance and it is the perfect appetizer to a gourmet experience.
Also, trevally are HUGE.
Tumblr media
Here is the mascot species of the Odysea, a sand tiger/gray nurse/ragged tooth shark. The bubble fountain at the back of the photo hides the bathroom window.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Sea Trek tank on the upper floor had mostly tropical fish, but it had a zebra shark and A BONNETTHEAD SHARK! SQUEEEEE!!!! Internally crying for joy!!!!
Tumblr media
Brown-banded Bamboo Shark in the shark/ray touch aquarium. A couple of times while I was hanging out by this tank I saw it roll onto its side and scratch itself in the sand--I've seen that on video so I jumped whenever I saw it happen. The cownose rays in the touch tanks are absolutely spoiled and swim up to the surface for pets ASAP when they see you approach.
Tumblr media
Benthic buddies: here's the brown-banded bamboo shark lying next to the white-spotted bamboo shark.
Tumblr media
Magnificent zebra shark in the movie theater tank. The movie theater would play 10-minute videos and then move the screen back up between showings. I think this was probably my favorite tank. There was a second zebra shark (Stegostoma tigrinum) in this tank.
Tumblr media
They also had LEOPARD SHARKS (Triakis semifasciata) !!!!!! again, my cup runneth over!
Tumblr media
Epaulette sharks in the Great Barrier Reef tunnel. The one laying on the glass was a male and so he was flashing EVERYONE with his claspers (blurry pic--but maybe that's for the better). There was also an epaulette shark in the stingray touch tank.
Tumblr media
Got to spend a few moments of shared eye contact with this epaulette shark💖
Tumblr media
Back to the Voyager tank. Here is a sandbar shark and the head of a LEMON SHARK. There were at least two lemon sharks in the Voyager tank. It took me a moment to recognize them. The Voyager tanks are kind of dark, and ofc with no natural sunlight the lemon sharks don't get to show off their color properly. Maybe they should change the light fixtures.
Tumblr media
Here's a sandbar shark again along with a view of the reef in the Voyager tank. Again, the trevally are ENORMOUS, bigger than the blacktip reef shark (either that, or BTRs are just small). I deliberately avoided taking too many photos and focused more on the experience, so these are just the highlights of the sharks. Also I've seen the giant Amazon rainforest fish before so no need to repeat.
Have some random aquarium denizens:

Aquarium review: They definitely put money and effort into making the aquarium a good home for the animals as well as engaging and educational for visitors. I was able to be up close and personal with the sharks, which was exactly what I wanted. I feel like the rotating Voyager exhibit is a little overrated--the cheesy Holiday-themed narration didn't help. Aquarium staff kept their distance but were helpful when needed. Starbucks on the second floor is nice. Super expensive but definitely worth it. 8 out of 10.

Shark post: some sharks I spotted on my trip to Nausicaá yesterday!
Leopard shark - Triakis semifasciata
Tumblr media
One of my absolute favourite shark species, they are so beautiful and graceful, I spend a good 30 minutes just staring at them, completely enchanted by the way they moved
On average, leopard sharks can grow up to 1,30 meteres. They can live up to 30 years and they grow quite slowly. One of the leopard sharks in the aquarium was significantly smaller than the others, watching him swim alongside the bigger ones was insane!
Starry smooth-hound - Mustelus asterias
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These little guys were sharing a tank with the leopard sharks! On average, they don’t grow larger than 1 meter. A fun fact about them (that I found in my shark book) is that they are viviparous and their nests can be as large as 37 pups! Getting a picture of these little guys was difficult, since the lighting made it hard to get their spots, but these are absolutely gorgeous and I’m obsessed!
Zebra shark - Stegostoma Tigrinum
Tumblr media
A part of the aquarium was closed for maintenance, and so this one was the only one we got to see. Zebra sharks are also one of my favourites ever! They are oviparous, and the female sharks are able to reproduce with parthenogenesis!
Epaulette shark - Hemiscyllium ocellatum
Tumblr media
Epaulette sharks are pretty amazing animals! These sharks can use their pectoral fins to “walk” over the seafloor. They have even evolved to be able to walk on land, surviving hypoxia for up to two hours! (This is the best picture of one of them I could get… it was so beautiful)
Sandbar shark - Carcharhinus plumbeus
Tumblr media
This shark can grow up to almost 2 meters! They are so beautiful when they swim, I loved watching them.
Honorable mention:
small-spotted catshark - Scyliorhinus canicula
These sharks are very commonly found in the North Sea, which is the only sea we have over here in Belgium. I’ve seen this species quite often and saw two of them yesterday, but I didn’t manage to get a picture.
And finally…
Tumblr media
Yesterday was the third time I ever went to Nausicaá. It was, however, the first time that I went outside of school holidays in Belgium and France (where the aquarium is located). And because of this, there was hardly anyone there. And because of that, for the first time ever, I managed to get a clear picture of this aquarium.
The glass is 20 meters long and 5 meters high. In this 54 ton aquarium are half a dozen sandbar sharks, accompanied by many fishes and rays, including a manta ray named Charles (it took me way too long to understand the Ray Charles reference here 🤦🏼‍♀️).

And we're approaching the end of our kickstarter~
Doing a couple more pieces of original work. This time a mini and mixed media Sandbar Shark that I need to finish, and the finished Blue Shark. I should have the sandbar shark up this coming and last week but the blue shark is already up there as a reward. I'm going to go back and finish up some education about sharks after this. Shares always appreciated and see you at the end~

shark pups
happy shark week! here’s some adorable shark pups to make your day better. :)
Tumblr media
After anywhere from 13-16 months the tiger shark pups are born. There can be anywhere 10-82 pups in the litter, but 20-30 is average. When they’re born they’re only 50-75cm long. After they’re born they’re on their own.
Tumblr media
4-7 lemon shark pups are born after a 10-12 month gestation period. They’re 60cm long when they’re born. They tend to be born in mangroves, the roots provide the pups safety and a place to hide from predators.
Tumblr media
Grey reef sharks are born in litters with 1-6 pups after a gestation period of 12 months. The pups are only 45-60cm long when they’re born. They’ll have their own pups after they reach maturity, which occurs once they’re around 7.
Tumblr media
A bonnethead shark is the smallest on this list, by far. After a 5-6 month gestation period up to 14 pups are born. The pups are only 0.3-0.4m long when born.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sandbar shark pups are born after a gestation period of 6-12 months with 1-14 pups per litter. Female sandbar sharks only give birth every 2-3 years. Both of the pictures of the sandbar pups are from the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium in 2018, born in a 9 pup litter.
