Nerve pain
So, another short (not so short) story. This one follows something that Nurmi told Sofia about his nerve pain, so, SPOILERS!
-----
It was a very cold morning, the snow was thick on the ground and Sofia had arrived late for work because the walking was a little harder with the weather. Before going to her locker, she passed by the desk she shared with Nurmi and noticed his things weren’t there.
-Hey, JP. Where’s Nurmi? -She asked, confused. Sakari Nurmi was almost never late, unlike her.
-I don’t know, was about to ask you the same thing, he’s your partner, not mine. - JP said and Sofia rolled her eyes.
She was about to call him when their boss came in.
-Nurmi called, said he couldn’t make it to work today. Said he was sick and had to go to the doctor’s. - The blonde woman said and passed by them, walking to her office.
Sofia didn’t buy it. She had seen Nurmi only yesterday and he seemed fine. Well, he did run to the bathroom once, but nothing suspicious. Still, he would’ve called her to ask for help.
He did miss job another time that same week and asked her to cover for him. She didn’t ask, she trusted him. But now It did not look fine.
She decided to text him instead.
“Hey, are you ok? Need anything?”
She sent the text and tried to focus on her job, which was mostly desk job since she didn’t have her partner for field work.
An hour had passed by and the answer never came. Sofia took a break and went outside to smoke a cigarette. She was starting to get a little worried, he was not the type to disappear.
Sofia tried calling him. No answer.
She finished her cigarette and got her coat and keys from her desk.
It was a 15 minute walk to his apartment and she was very thankful that he insisted on her having a spare key.
Sofia passed the street door, ran up the stairs and stopped at his door. Her mind was thinking all sorts of things, but she tried to focus on the moment.
She rang the doorbell and called his name, just in case he had someone over. She wouldn’t want to run into him with another woman or anything like it.
After some time with no response, she turned the doorknob and it opened. The door wasn’t even locked.
The apartment was quiet, a little dark, but still very neat. On the kitchen counter she could see boxes of pain medicine, opioids, along with a medical prescription. They were still untouched though.
-Nurmi! -She shouted, grabbing her gun and walking slowly into the apartment. No one responded so she kept walking. As she approached the bedroom door, she could hear some noise, like a shaky breath. The door was slightly opened and she pushed it to get a clear view of the room.
When the door opened completely, she saw him lying on the bed, shivering so much that it hurt only to watch.
-Nurmi, what happened? - She ran to him, touching his shoulder. He was wearing a white t-shirt and she could feel he was burning in fever.
He grabbed her hand and held it so tight that it hurt her fingers, but she didn’t pull away. Instead she touched his forehead with the other hand and he was hot and sweaty.
-Can you talk? I need to know what’s going on. How can I help you? - She tried to stay calm so he wouldn’t be so scared by her reaction.
-It hurts… -Was the only thing he said. She didn’t understand what hurt, but she knew she needed to lower his body temperature, or else his system would collapse.
She grabbed him and rushed the man to the bathroom, turning on the cold shower. Soon his clothes were soaking wet and his spasms slowed down. He looked at her and his eyes were red and puffy, he’d probably been crying a lot.
-Feeling better? - She asked, checking his body temperature with the shower still on. The water was cold, but it was necessary to help lower his fever. It worked.
-Yes, a little. Thanks. - He said exhausted from the shivering.
-I’m going to call an ambulance. You stay here. - She said turning the water off and his hand instantly grabbed her.
-No, please! -He begged. She could see the pain in his eyes. But still, she trusted him.
-Okay, but you’re gonna tell me what’s going on. Okay? -She took a deep breath and stood up.
-Okay. -He said still breathing heavily. She grabbed a towel and wrapped around him, getting him off the shower area.
-You have to change these clothes. Can you do this on your own or do you need help? -She sat him down on the toilet while he dried himself.
-I think i can manage. - His voice was tired.
-Okay, I’m gonna get out of the bedroom so you can change. Call me when you’re ready.
Sofia left the room and closed the door, still wanting to call an ambulance, but not doing so because Nurmi asked her not to.
After a few minutes, Nurmi called her and she rushed into the room.
He was sitting on his bed, fully dressed in his PJs, with his eyes closed and a tired expression on his face.
She approached the bed, sitting next to him, observing him for a minute. His breath slowly returning to normal.
-How are you feeling? -Sofia asked, resting a hand on his leg. He felt safe under her touch, but his body still hurt a lot.
-Better, I guess. -His voice was bitter. -Thank you. -He said looking at her, she could see his eyes were still heavy with pain.
-Can you explain to me what’s happening? I was worried about you. -Her voice was calm but she had a heavy tone.
He didn’t want to tell her, and didn't know how to talk about it. But he didn’t have much time, the pain could return at any moment, so he decided it would be better to just tell her what was going on.
-Remember when I told you that the radiation from the mine gave me terrible nerve pain? - He said, bringing his legs to his chest, still not looking at her. His face was tense. Why was he being such an asshole?
-Yeah, so? -She tensed up remembering the conversation back then.
-It’s back. -Nurmi looked up trying to hide his tears. -I went to the doctor just so I had an excuse to miss work. The medicine doesn’t work. Nothing works. Except one thing. -He rubbed his eyes to relieve himself of the tears and Sofia couldn’t help the single tear that rolled down her own face. He was in terrible pain, that’s why he was so rude.
-Nurmi… why didn’t you tell me? -She reached for his hand, that was very cold now. At least the fever had stopped. -What do you think would happen if i didn’t come here today? -She got mad at him for a second, she was really worried, more than she would admit.
He pulled his hand back and it felt like a knife had crossed her heart.
-Tell you and then what? -He looked at her with his eyes wet.
-I don’t know, I could help you solve this, we can find a way. -She wiped the tears from her eyes. She didn’t even care anymore if she was crying in front of him.
-There’s no solving this. I’m a fucking junky now. Or are you going to buy some heroin for me? -He said angry and then it hit him. She was just trying to help, it wasn’t her fault.
Without saying a word, Sofia stood up and made her way to the door.
-Sorry. Don’t go! -He stood up and walked to her, trying to forget the pain. -Please, don’t go. I’m sorry, I was an idiot and you’re just trying to help.
She looked at him and his face was softer, but his eyes were still showing pain. Hers were too, he saw it. Nurmi didn’t say another word, he just wrapped his arms around her in a hug. He couldn’t bear to lose the only friend he had in his life.
-I’m sorry, you didn’t deserve this. -He begged again, crying on her shoulder. She cried too.
-It’s okay. But never say that about yourself again, okay? -Sofia said and Nurmi agreed. She knew he was only rude because he was in pain. They would’ve stayed like this for a longer time if Nurmi’s legs hadn’t failed him, making him almost fall down. Luckily he was holding on to Karppi.
-Shit! - He said arching his body to relieve the pain. Sofia then helped him back into bed.
-You need to warm up now, if the fever comes back you can take a pill to lower it. Lay here. -She said rearranging the bed so he could lie underneath the blanket.
Nurmi was still shivering, so she took off her coat and shoes to join him.
-Is it okay if i join you? It’s just to warm you up for a bit. - She asked, already getting under the blanket with him. He nodded yes and she wrapped her arms around him.
-Thank you. -He said feeling her warm body near him.
-It’s coming back, isn’t it? -Sofia asked, feeling his spasms.
-Yes. I don’t know what to do. -He turned to look at her and his eyes were red with tears again.
-I think it will help if you take your mind off it a little, until we figure something out. Your body is flooding with anxiety and it makes the situation worse. -Her eyes searched his and her hand went to his face, gently touching his cheek.
-How? -He was desperate for an answer, anything. -Help me. -Nurmi closed his eyes, giving up to exhaustion.
-Nurmi. -She called. He opened his eyes and stared at her. -I think I know something that may help in the short term, until we figure out what to do. Do you trust me? -He was confused, but he trusted her. He should have trusted her earlier.
-Yes. -He said and waited for whatever it was that she was gonna do.
Sofia then moved closer to him and kissed his lips. Her hand caressed his neck very gently and he was startled by her action. But he trusted her and went along with it, moving his hand to her back, pulling her closer.
Their tongues found each other for some time, moving together, exploring each other’s mouths like they had done a few times before. The kiss was very slow and heartwarming. Her hands ran through his hair, making his skin crave her.
After a while, they started breaking the kiss so they could breathe a little. He could feel his body more relaxed and his spasms had slowed down.
Their eyes found each other again and Nurmi smiled. Sofia pulled him closer so his head was almost on her neck. She knew how to help him.
-So, talk me through it. How does this pain work? -She asked while running her hands up and down his back.
-It comes in waves. Sometimes it lasts five minutes, five hours, five days. Sometimes it comes and goes, sometimes it stays longer than the last time. -He said, trying to remember the details.
-Before this, when was the last time you had a crisis? And how long did it last?
-Last year. There were three waves. First it lasted a whole day, then it lasted for two hours and then came down to half an hour. Then it stopped for the rest of the year, until this week. -Nurmi remembered and his body ached.
-Okay. Did you try the medicine again?
-Yes, i went to the hospital and they gave me intravenous morphine. It helped for the day, but today it came back worse. -He let out a shaky breath, visibly frustrated.
Sofia wanted to find other ways to help him, but it seemed like he knew better. She was worried about her friend.
-So it looks like there’s only one way now, am i right? -She backed away a little to look at him.
-That’s what I’m trying to tell you. -His body started trembling again. -You should go. I’m not getting you in trouble.
-I’m not leaving you. We’ll go through this together. -She said, certain that she would not abandon him like this.
-What are we going to do then? -He asked, pulling up the blanket to get warmer.
-I need to think.-Sofia said, looking away from him, trying to concentrate. -Do you think you can be alone for some time? I need to get something for my headache and for us to eat. Until then, I’ll figure something out. Okay?
-Okay. -He agreed with a long breath. Part of him didn’t want her to leave. He wanted her body warming him a little longer.
-It won’t be long. -She leaned down and kissed his forehead. -Please, keep your phone close and call me if anything happens. -She then leaned down again and kissed his lips. Sometimes she missed kissing him at random moments.
-I will. Take care okay?
-Okay. -She said and got out of bed, leaving a cold void where she had laid down.
Sofia got her coat and shoes, handed his phone to him and exited the apartment. She felt terrible lying to him, but she needed to do something. She knew exactly where to find what she was looking for. She had an informant that owed her a favor.
While Sofia was gone, Nurmi tried to distract himself from the waves of pain that were already building up on his body. He closed his eyes and thought about their kiss a while back, and all of the times she’d kissed him. Why did it have to be so complicated with them? They get along so fine now, and they trust each other. Well, that’s a matter for another time, he thought. He tried to focus on the taste of her lips, he could still feel it on his skin. Her tongue dancing around with his, her teeth biting his lips, his hands touching her flesh, getting comfortable there. He could live forever inside these thoughts.
The memories helped and he calmed down a little. Without noticing, he fell into a nap, maybe for the first time since yesterday.
—-
After a long talk with her informant, trying to convince him she was not going to arrest anyone and just wanted the drug to do a “lab test”, Sofia was finally back on the way to Nurmi’s apartment. She stopped by a local market to get them some food and went on her way.
She arrived quietly and called for Nurmi and when he didn’t answer, her whole body froze. She felt a lump on her throat and went straight to his room, finding him asleep on his bed, finally. The woman decided not to wake him now and headed back to his kitchen. She put the frozen lasagna in the oven and sat on the kitchen counter.
She then called work and said that she was out seeking some lead that had showed up and would go straight home when her hours were done. She wasn’t one to lie to anyone, but it was an exceptional situation and her friend needed her.
Only half an hour had passed when she saw Nurmi emerging from his room, clearly in pain again. He smiled seeing Sofia there and sat down on the other side, in front of her.
-I know it sucks to answer but, how are you feeling? -She said putting her phone down.
-The pain is coming back i guess, but hey, at least i took a nap. -He tried to smile through the pain.
-Yeah, I didn’t want to wake you up, you look like you needed it. Are you hungry?
-Not really. But it smells good. -He wasn’t hungry? Now that was a problem, he was always hungry. Nurmi was, on the other hand, very thirsty, his throat was dry but he didn’t have the strength to get up.
Sofia stood up and turned off the oven, the lasagna was ready. She left it there and poured a glass of water for him. Taking care of countless fevers from Emil and Henna has taught her a thing or two. She knew hydration was very important.
-Here! -She handed the glass over to him and he was surprised.
-Thank you. How did you know I was thirsty? -He asked, drinking the whole glass at once.
-Well, after all, I am a detective and a mother of two. -She stated while returning to her seat in front of him with the bottle of water. -I know a thing or two about fevers.
-It means you’re my mother now, Sofia Karppi? -He served another glass of water and she laughed. Loud. He laughed too and drank the water.
-Hell no! -She said, looking firmly at him. -Or do you want me to? -Sofia then took the empty glass and filled it with water, for herself this time.
-Well, no! We wouldn't be able to do certain things if you were my mother. -He said, giving her a look she’d never seen before and she choked, coughing all the water out. She wasn’t expecting this from her sick friend.
She was still gasping for air and Nurmi went to her, tapping her gently on the back so she would unchoke. After her breathing returned back to normal, Nurmi rested his hands on her shoulder and she could feel his skin was hot again. He was still laughing uncontrollably though.
-I knew it, your fever is back, you must be hallucinating. - She tried to joke because of the funny moment, but her smile got smaller when she turned and touched his forehead again.
-But I meant what I said. -Nurmi said, putting a strand of her hair behind her ear and fixing his tired eyes on her. -Thanks for being here with me. -He cupped her cheek and leaned down, kissing her lips again.
Her hands held his face too while she stood up to be on the same level as him and she could feel he was very hot, starting to sweat now.
Nurmi stopped the kiss with small kisses on her lips and stayed close to her with his eyes shut. Sofia opened hers and looked at his expression. Pain.
He tried to smile but she could see it hurt even to smile. Soon, another tear rolled down his face and she felt his hands grasping her shoulders. She knew what that meant so she wrapped her arms around him to prevent his fall.
-Sit here! -She pointed the chair to him and he followed her commands. His body started to spasm again, not as hard as before, but considerably hard.
He started breathing heavily and closed his eyes every time a wave of pain took over his body. Sofia went to the pocket of her coat and grabbed a small plastic bag, like the ones they used for evidence at the station.
-I tried to help you in other ways, but I couldn’t, so please, use it wisely. -She dropped the bag with the white powder on the counter in front of him. He opened his eyes and stared at it.
-You shouldn’t have done this.
-And what could I do? Sit here and watch you being miserably in pain? Just promise me you’ll only use this for the pain, and when it stops, we’ll go after a treatment that works long term. -She demanded, scared of may be doing him more harm than good.
-I promise. Thank you. -He reached for the package and looked at her. -Can i ask you to leave the room for a moment? I don’t want you to see me like this. -He said disappointed in himself. She didn’t want to leave him alone, but didn’t want to see it either.
-Okay, I’ll be in your bedroom. -She said leaving him alone in the kitchen. Part of her wanted to stay, but the other part didn’t want to know how he did it, and didn't want to see the effects of it on him.
Sofia sat on his bed, inhaling his scent that filled the room. She grabbed his pillow and laid down, closing her eyes for a second. She was very tired and she could feel it.
About ten minutes later, Nurmi showed up at the bedroom.
-Are you awake? -He said in a whisper not trying to wake her in case she were sleeping.
-Yeah, I just closed my eyes for a second to relax. -She sat on the bed again and looked at him. -How’s the pain? -She asked and he sat down right next to her.
-Almost gone. -He sounded relieved. -I’m hungry now. Let’s eat? -Now that was her friend.
-Yeah sure. -She laughed and they got up from bed.
Lunch was quieter than usual, both their minds were floating elsewhere. Sometimes they would cross eyes on the table, but quickly turn away or face the food again.
Since Sofia was not planning on leaving Nurmi anytime soon, she texted Emil and told him to come to Nurmi’s apartment after school.
After eating, Sofia started feeling the weight of her body heavier than usual. She definitely needed a nap.
-Hey, I really need to sleep, is it okay if I crash here on the couch for a few hours? -She said leaving her plate on the sink while Nurmi returned from the bathroom. His face looked better already and she didn’t know if this was good or bad.
-Why would I let you sleep on this shitty couch? Take the bed. -He said, trying to fix his wrinkled shirt.
-Aren’t you going to sleep on the bed? -He rolled his eyes at her question and laughed.
-Yeah, like we never shared a bed before Sofia. Let’s go. Plus, if you sleep on the couch you’ll wake up miserable. -He said as they walked to his room.
Nurmi took his usual side of the bed and Sofia took the other one. He turned on the tv at some random movie, as he was not sleepy at all now.
Sofia laid down, staring at the ceiling and her eyes started getting heavy. Why did it feel weird being in bed with him now? It was not a big deal and they were very good friends, but still, she was feeling like a teenager doing something wrong.
Nurmi could almost feel the tension on her body as she laid there looking up, so he laid down on his side to look at her.
-You ok? -He asked and she looked at him. His eyes were brighter and his pupils were dilated, probably because of the “medicine”.
-Just tired. -She said, trying to sound indifferent.
-Sorry to make you go through this. -He said, reaching for her hand. -And again, thanks for being here with me. -He pulled her hand and kissed it.
-You don’t have to thank me. -She said in a soft voice, turning her back to him. She still didn’t know if it was the right choice giving him the drug, but at least he wasn’t in pain anymore. As soon as she closed her eyes, Sofia felt Nurmi’s hand pulling her waist closer to him in a cuddle position. His nose was on her neck, breathing hot air on her skin as he held her tightly. It felt so good she didn’t dare to move.
Sofia fell asleep very fast, feeling Nurmi’s body holding her. He was still awake, one of the effects of the drug, so he kept looking at her, sleeping peacefully. His hand was running slowly through her hair while he listened to whatever was on tv. He could easily get used to this routine of having her over, eventually Emil too, having meals together, kissing, cuddling. They came a long way from where their friendship began. Was it still a friendship or was it more? For god’s sake, she just went all the way to buy him fucking heroine. This woman was golden!
He spent the rest of the afternoon without feeling any pain. Since the TV was on, he started paying attention to the movie while Sofia rested by his side.
Sofia entered Nurmi’s apartment again that day, but this time it was darker, messy and filthy. Something was wrong. She looked around but couldn’t find him anywhere. She then went to his bedroom. Nothing.
The door to his bathroom was slightly opened, so she walked over there and pushed it. When the door finally opened, she saw him on the ground.
He was lying face up, his eyes were open and red. His face was swollen, purple and lifeless. She rushed to him. He was cold, his body was rigid and only when she got too close she saw it: needle, syringe, drug, vomit.
She did CPR over and over again and nothing worked. She checked his pulse on the last attempt of finding any life in his body, but she already knew that it had none. He was long gone, his body was already cold.
It was all her fault, she’d bought him the drugs, she should’ve called the ambulance, done anything to prevent him from taking the drugs. And now he was dead. Sakari Nurmi was dead and there was nothing she could do.
-I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. -She screamed over his dead body, crying and shaking him, in hope he would wake up, in hope that life would return to his blue eyes and he’d give her that smile she loved so much.
-Sofia! Wake up. -She felt a hand shaking her body and she jumped up on the bed. It was a nightmare, a terrible one. When her eyes adjusted to being awake, she looked to her side and was relieved to see him. -What happened? -Nurmi asked, seeing that her eyes were full of tears. Sofia grabbed him in a hug and collapsed in tears. She felt so guilty for the dream that she couldn’t control herself.
He held her in his arms and tried to calm her down, but she was shaking heavily.
-Please, talk to me. Are you ok? -He asked again, trying to look at her face, but it was buried in his chest. She just kept repeating “I’m sorry, I’m sorry” but he didn’t know what she was sorry for. He figured she may have had a bad dream. -You’re awake now, I’m here, everything is fine. -He kept stroking her back, holding her very close.
Slowly Sofia calmed down and finally looked at him, his face was confused. He was sad to see her like that.
-Please, answer me just one thing: Do you use needles? -Her eyes were begging for an answer.
-What? No! -He said to her. -What did you dream of? -He asked, worried.
She told him the dream she had, eventually crying again, and then he understood why she woke up so desperate. He explained to her that he only uses very small amounts, and swore to her it was just for the pain, no needles involved. She was relieved to hear this answer and finally relaxed a little.
He brought her closer to his chest again and they stayed like that for some time. He kept holding her, feeling her chest go up and down as her breath returned to normal. Nurmi was so lucky to have a friend like her in his life.
-How's the pain going? -She asked again. She was still worried, but glad he wasn't shaking anymore.
-It's gone now, and i think it won't be returning for some time. -He looked at her and saw she was still worried. - You don't need to worry, I'm okay now. -Again his hand took a strand of her hair and tugged behind her ear. She inhaled deeply and nodded.
-Okay. - She said content, but his deep blue eyes still stared at her, like he wanted something. Suddenly she realized that she could stare at them forever. They were mysterious and sharp, and they crossed every wall she'd ever built up around her soul, and it scared her.
-Can i kiss you? - He asked out of the blue. It's not something he'd normally do, after all, they've kissed a lot before. But she liked how he asked for it.
-Yes. -Sofia answered, biting her lip, wanting to kiss him too.
Nurmi put a hand on the back of her neck and kissed her. But this kiss was different from the others, it was full of desire, thirsty. She felt shivers up and down her body when his tongue ran around her lips and his hand went down to her waist.
Before none of them could realize, Sofia was sitting on his lap while he rested his back on the headboard. His body was warming up again, but this time it was not the fever, it was her.
His mouth started making a path of kisses on her neck and collarbone, going up to her ears. -Do you have any idea how much I want you? - He whispered, his breath causing shivers on her body.
-No, why don't you show me? -She said with a devilish smile on her face. He was ready to do insanities with that woman but his thoughts were interrupted by her phone ringing on the nightstand.
Without getting off his lap, Sofia reached for it and answered, covering Nurmi's mouth. It was Emil, he was at the building. She talked to him for about two minutes and the man couldn't help but tease her while she did it. His hands went straight underneath her sweater, reaching for her breasts. She had to concentrate really hard on the conversation so as not to lose control. Soon she hung up and turned to look at him.
-Who was it? -He asked, stroking her waist underneath her clothes.
-Emil, i told him to come straight here after school. He's waiting for us to open the door and he's hungry. -She said and Nurmi laughed. He stared at her for a brief moment and bit his lower lip, this would have to wait. Sofia tilted her head to him and whispered in his ear. -You'll have to show me another time how much you want me.
-You won't escape me. Okay Sofia Karppi?
-Okay Sakari Nurmi. - She kissed him and quickly got up from his lap. What did she do to him?
By the time Nurmi was out of the room, Emil was already sitting at his kitchen counter, eating the last piece of the lasagna that Sofia bought earlier. She was by the espresso machine, fixing helserf a much deserved cup of coffee.
-Hi Emil. - He said high fiving the boy. Emil didn't say anything since his mouth was stuffed with lasagna. -What about mine? -He asked, seeing Sofia sip on her coffee.
-I think you'll be awake long enough now. It's better not to drink coffee, don't you agree? - She asked in a low voice, getting closer to him.
-You're right. Thanks for the reminder. -He said going towards the window to look outside for a moment. He just now realized it was starting to get dark and more snow was falling, making the city look even prettier. Sofia approached him and they both stared at the city lights while Emil finished his food.
-Look, I need to get home, take a shower and put Emil to bed soon enough because he has school tomorrow. -She said looking at him while he still looked at the window. He was almost starting to think she would just leave and he would again be alone in his apartment. -I know you said you're okay, but I think it's safer if I keep an eye on you just for tonight. Do you wanna come over? Tomorrow I'll be out of your sight and won't bother you anymore. -After she finished the sentence, he had to contain the smile that wanted to appear on his face.
-You're not bothering me, never. You helped a lot today and you know it. -He said now looking at her. He got closer and leaned on her ear to whisper. -And since it'll take longer for me to fall asleep today, we can take care of our unfinished business. -He came back to standing straight and she could see his eyes sparkling. Her body warmed up just thinking about it.
-Better hurry up and get your things then, me and Emil are leaving in ten minutes.
----
That was it people, i hope you enjoyed.
