So... a Halloween party for the Pogues is basically an every day party, except they put on costumes and eat a shit ton of candy. And maybe do karaoke.

John B, JJ, and Pope are matching skeletons. Ruby, Sage, and Kie are fairies.

So when Ruby, John B, JJ, Pope, and Kie were watching Sage sing That's What Makes You Beautiful by One Direction? Highlight of their year. Better than fucking Christmas.

"Okay, okay," Sage huffs, completely out of breath. "Who's next?"

"You are, baby," John B chuckles, offering Sage her beer. "You put yourself down for all night."

Sage raises her eyebrows, chugging the beer. "Fuck, seriously? Well, I don't wanna go anymore."

"Too bad, Sage," Ruby chimes in, her legs laying over JJ's lap. "Come on, we all know you love singing. Just one more!"

Sage waves her off, "Fine, fine. But this one's gotta be fucking good."

JJ and Ruby tapered off into their own conversation, lost in their own little world. John B nudged Pope, grinning. "10 bucks says she picks a song from 1990."

"Destiny's Child, for sure," Kie chimed in.

"Okay, okay," Sage said, shaking out her hands. "No Scrub, TLC."

"Oh my God," Ruby grinned, "I fucking love this song! Can I duet?"

"Hell yes!" Sage said, handing Ruby the other microphone. "Bless you, Pope, for sharing your karaoke machine with us."

"Gift of the year, my good sir," JJ raised his beer mockingly, putting on an accent.

"It's my moms!" Pope defended weakly, sipping at his beer again.

The opening notes of No Scrub started playing and the two girls danced around, absolutely care free as they sang.

"Oh my God," Ruby huffed, flopping down on the couch beside JJ again. "That song is literally my life. Innit, J?" She nudged her boyfriend playfully, reciting a few lines, "Hanging out the passenger side of his best friend's ride, trying to holler at me--"

JJ got up from the couch in a huff, his cheerful demeanor gone and replaced with an upset, angry vibe.

"JJ!" Ruby yelled, confused. "What the hell?" She got off the couch, rushing after JJ and grabbing his arm. "JJ, what--"

JJ whirled, anger written across his features. "What do you mean, 'what'? You're just gonna act like it's about someone who won't give any love to a poor guy? Fucking Christ, Ruby, even you aren't that dumb!"

Ruby flinched. "Hey, that's not fair. I didn't even think--"

"Yeah, no shit," JJ responded, pulling his arm away from her and shoving the door open.

"JJ, that's not fair!" Ruby yelled, tears shining in her eyes. "You can't just--"

"Oh, I can't? Ruby Routledge, everyone, who's tryin' to tell me what I can and can't do? Get off your high horse."

"I'm not on a goddamn high horse, JJ! What the fuck is up with you?!" Ruby yelled, the pair now standing in the yard and having a full-on screaming match right in front of the open living room window. "Why are you reacting so poorly to this song?"

"It's about a rich bitch, Ruby!" JJ yelled, getting in her face. "A rich bitch who won't give any love to a guy who lives with his mom, who doesn't have money, and doesn't have a goddamn car! And I don't have any of those things, so why the hell would you give me love? I'm just a fucking scrub!"

Ruby let out an incredulous laugh. "JJ! Come on! I meant--"

"It doesn't matter what you meant," JJ says as it starts to rain. "It matters what you said. And you said, and I quote, 'this song is literally my life.'" He wipes his face, black and white makeup smudging with the water.

"I didn't mean to hurt your feelings, JJ, okay? I'm really sorry," Ruby said, taking a small step forward. "I just meant that it's funny, okay? That I have this gorgeous scrub all to myself, JJ, because I wouldn't have it any other way. Come back inside, okay? Please, for me? You can pick a terrible song about women and say it's about me."

JJ made a face, "Sure. Fine."

"I really am sorry, JJ," Ruby said, pushing JJ's hair back and leaning up to kiss his makeup-ruined face. "I love you..."

"Okay, okay," JJ said wish a small laugh, pushing Ruby away so he could properly kiss her lips, I love you, too. And I'm sorry I overreacted."

"It's okay. Hey, what song are you gonna pick?"

"Lights Down Low," JJ smirked, "By Bei Maejor."

"JJ!"

Large silk skin panels trimmed with embroidery in the same shade in relief. The skirt forms the right pouf behind. Short bodice tucked into the waist. The fullness of the darts forms pleats in the front. Wide surah belt forming two sections on the left side, tightened in a purse at the bottom with trimmings appliques, gold embroidery yoke, Medici collar trimmed with lace. Elbow sleeve trimmed with embroidery at the bottom.

Embroidered voile ensemble with very pale mauve background and plain voile in the same shade. — Pleated skirt in plain voile cut into teeth at the bottom, covered with pleated drapery on the right continuing the skirt, gracefully raised on the left and pleated like a shell at the bottom. Fully pleated bodice under a belt in the same fabric placed on a transparent silk finished on the side under a matching fault bow. Same knot on the drapery. Pleated collar in embroidered veil, topped with a straight collar. Pleated sleeve, embroidered cuff, on the sleeve, ribbon drapery forming a bow on the top.

Time stays long enough for anyone who will use it - Leonardo Davinci

The Ride

The drive through the French countryside felt like it could be Iowa, but what would have been acres of corn was acres of canola - large squares of bright yellow. But when you leave the highway and enter the narrow streets of a medieval town, there is no doubt that you are in France.

The Guide

Olivier doled out wisdom and history like a sage of old. He ferried us around like a shepherd with his tiny flock: Andrew and Brittany (the Aussies), David and Kim (the Louisianians) and Tess, Emma and me. Ken had a long sleepless night and was not feeling well enough to go. Olivier was charming, professorial and passionate about history.

The Women of Chateau Chenonceau

Catherine Briconnet designed Chenonceau in the 16th century while her husband was off somewhere in Italy. She tore down all but one tower of a medieval chateau and built a new one on its foundation. The castle she designed was built in the middle of the river and included a bridge to the other side. She and her husband passed away before King Henry II of France discovered that they had robbed his coffers to build it. According to Olivier, “This was a very French thing to do.”

Henry did not waste the space. He promptly bestowed it upon his mistress, Diane de Poitiers who was twenty-five years older than the king. According to Olivier, “She was the first cougar.” His joke not mine.

When Henry passed away, his wife, the queen took the chateau for herself. Her name was Catherine de Medici and even though she dislodged the mistress, she did provide for her by giving her a different chateau in a town up the way. Pretty nice, I’d say. Catherine added levels to the bridge to add living space. The chateau stands the way she left it.

One in a Million

Davinci spent the last three years of his life in France with King Francois I. They became so close that Davinci requested to be buried at the King’s chateau - Chateau Amboise. Non royal people of the time did not usually merit such an honor.

Leonardo Davinci only painted 14 paintings in his lifetime. He brought 4 paintings to France with him, one of which was the Mona Lisa. He continued to work on them until he died. He designed the massive chateau that Francois was planning to build as a hunting “lodge.” The “lodge” ended up having 427 rooms and 77 staircases. Davinci designed the heart of the building; a Greek cross with a double helix staircase resembling a strand of dna. When modern engineers came in and measured the core of the castle with laser precision, they found that every measurement was exact down to the centimeter.

This day was massive. I am tired in the best possible way.

Since the publication of Professor Joscelyn Godwin's translation of the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili (Thames and Hudson,1999) there has been considerable debate relating to the Authorship of the Text given that it was published anonymously _with only an "acrostic" of the first letters of each chapter hinting at the identity of the person(s) who composed the Work("Francesca Colonna Loved Polia Dearly"_etc)

Below _POLIAM FRATER FRANCISCUS COLUMNA PERAMAVIT

In view of the above most Scholars have come to agree with Professor Godwin that the author of the Hypnerotomachia was a Dominican Friar by the name of Francesca Colonna who resided for the major part of his Adult life in Trevisio,Italy_NNW of Venice . The main contender presenting an alternative to Professor Godwin's mainstream interpretation vis a vis "Authorship" is_of course_Dr Liane Lefaivre of MIT who has presented a voluminous work_Leon Battista Alberti's Hypnerotomachia Poliphili_ in support of the thesis that Alberti_the Vitruvian Architect _translator of the Ten Books of Vitruvius_was the primary Author . Professor Joscelyn Godwin records in his Book ,The Real Rule of Four, that there are other contenders for this role _Francesca Colonna , the Aristocrat who lived in a Palatial Home at Palestrina, nr Rome .Beyond that some consider that Lorenzo the Magnificent de Medici (Florence) may have been the Author . Beyond that a consortium of Classical Philologists working under Lorenzo de Medici's direction (Felice Feliciano ?)

For some reason Authors during the Renaissance & Early Modern Period published their Works anonymously.I'm unsure-for instance- why the Author of the "Fama and Confessio of the Fraternity of RC" -the so-called Rosicrucian Maniestoes-(composed by Johann Valentin Andraea_the Lutheran Pastor-1586-1654 ) published the above works anonymously(original publication 1614 in Germany_English translation_1652).I assume it wasthe same with his later publication "The Chemical Wedding of Christian Rosenkreutz".According to Dame Francis Yates (author of The Rosicrucian Enlightenment) the life of the Author may have been in danger for political reasons .Accordingly ,the individuals who were influenced by Andraea's Manifesto _the Founders of The Royal Society in the UK in 1660_Francis Bacon ,Lord Verulum,John Evelyn etc _possibly Descartes on the continent _worked in secret as a hermetically sealed unit known only to themselves .

In the case of the Hypnerotomacchia Poliphili I can't see any reason why the Work could be deemed dangerous in a political sense >It does seem that Leon Battiste Alberti had to be careful during the Course of his lifetime not to associate too closely with Scholars associated with the Pagan Revival given that there were Reactionary Popes (prior to the days of the Reformation_Counter-Reformation) who came down heavily on proponents of Alchemy_Neo-Platonic Wisdom_Hermeticism_Mathmatics as Heretics ..In fact there was a close Alliance during the time when the Hypnerotomachia was written_the Incunabula period 1450-1500...through to 1700(The period of "The Scientific Revolution"..and beyond)when there was a very close link between those who investigated Alchemy,Neo-Platonism_Merkabah Mysticism_Kabbalah-Egyptian Hermeticism(ie Occult Science in general ) AND the nascent or ongoing development of Empirical Science_Applied Science/Technology of our Modern Era....eg (1)It is said for instance that Nicolaus Copernicus,the originator of the Helio_Centric System of the Universe ( a "World -View" that superceded the Ptolomeic system) presented a diagrammatic image-woodcut of the New Heliocentric system_in the "De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium" & this depicted the 2nd C Egyptian Sage HermesTrismegistus at the top of the page presiding over the"new" Astronomical Model .( see Giodarno Bruno and the Hermetic Tradition>Frances Yates) (2) .... Obviously the Work is both a Romantic Allegory as well as an Erotic Treatise bordering on the Pornographic in places . So-given that the (alleged) Author _Francesca Colonna_was supposed to be a Dominican Friar bound to Vows of Celibacy he may have had the Work published anonymously via a "Go-Between"_(Leonardo Crasso) because he feared disciplinary treatment by the monastic Authorities(Francesca Colonna_the Monk_ was_in fact_ subject to a form of Monastic Tribunal late in his life & walked out the proceedings in disgust.) My feeling _however_ is that Francesca Colonna was just a somewhat pugnacious & mischievous character who enjoyed "winding-up" the more conservative Catholic Clergy of the day_along with The Papacy. ( Certainly the Vatican dealt with the circulation of the Hypnerotomachia with a degree of distaste .I dont think the Work was banned (?) but certainly numerous copies were comandeered for serious scrutiny(Liane Lefaivre's book contains illustrations of censorship where Woodcuts that I think were_are_remain quite harmless were "inked-out"_but(possibly) the censors left the more Erotic Prints-Images ( eg The Startled Nymph & Satyr_the Triumph of Semele_Dionysius _ The Sacrafice to Priapus_undamaged ? (*** BELOW _note to Dr Liane Lefaivre re The Triumph_Sacrafice to Priapus_Bacchus) . I'd imagine the Monks-Celibate Priests who did the Censoring_inking-out _ erased the images that were seemingly "harmless"_showed their Supervisers their Work_inking-out_then took their copy of the Book(Hypnerotomachia Poliphili...the Erotic Dream of Poliphilo) back to their Dormitories to "peruse" in private .I've always thought that _in one sense_the Hypnerotomachia has the quality of a "What the Butler saw"Sideshow _or,to a lesser extent, an old fashioned Erotic Sideshow at an old fashioned Carnival_travelling Fairground Show_especially in relation to the social ambience of Court Life in France at Fontainebleau&_later_Versailles .Queen Marie Antoinette was supposed to be obsessed with the Hypnerotomachia & no doubt spent many a Happy Hour with her Friends at the Petit Trianon perusing the Woodcuts in a voyeuristic fashion for purposes of "titillation"***(below)(& this does not detract from the more profound aspects of the HP as a philosophical Treatise etc) _in between playing Games_pretending that the Queen & her "Ladies in Waiting"were all Arcadian Sheperdesses in some pre-hensile Wonderland _back in "Arcady"_ before the Acolytes of Pan turned it into a syphillitic Hell-hole of Wanton Erotomaniacs unfit to spend their days in the Company of decent_law-abiding Citizens

The Lady who masqueraded as Mme de Pompadour on MySpace told me that _at the Court of Versailles during the Reigns of King Louis XIII & King Louis XIV "Poliphyllic" language was a popular pre-occupation amongst the Aristocracy _I guess as "chat-up lines" to flatter the opposite Sex_&,of course, to flatter those close to the beating Heart of it all _King Louis XIII and King Louis XIV _their many Mistresses & their umpteen illegitimate(grown-up) children . I just think that the Hypnerotomachia simply added an extra frisson of eroticism within social circles that were already rabidly sex-obsessed_acutely degenerate _ & of course _later on_in the Modern World_to serve as some kind of supplementary interest for people like the Polish film Director _Roman Polanski__self-evidently more sex obseessed than most people_ & to provide another layer of interest( Le Club Dumas etc ) for the bibliophiles_polyphiles who never tire of finding deeper layers of meaning within this supremely enigmatic Text without ever getting to the bottom of "what it's all about" & who-most probably-never will. And,of course, for people like myself_retired_with nothing better to do than formulate commentaries-raise questions without providing answers for the benefit of his perplexed Readership now_presumably_seriously in decline(if they ever existed at all in thefirst place) . Accordingly I'd say the Spirit of Mischief_a truly Mercurial Spirit_was at the Heart of Francesca Colonna's endeavours .

The Lakes- Chapter One

JJ Maybank- captain of the phantom, freshly eighteen. He had taken over Luke’s ship after he retired. Now it was just him and a dream.

Luke had always warned JJ about mermaids, about how dangerous they were. He always warned him if he heard singing at night to run inside the cabin and hide.

JJ had since passed these warnings onto his crew, always making sure they were on the lookout for mermaids.

Ruby Routledge- mermaid, seventeen and a troublemaker. She was always sneaking out of her cave, eager to mess with unsuspecting pirates.

The other mermaids warned her of poachers, telling her horrific tales of blood, tears, and scales being taken.

That only made Ruby want to hunt those bastards even more.

Today was different, JJ was out on a lifeboat by himself, doing a supply run while the rest of the crew cleaned up and repaired the ship from the latest battle.

He had the map in front of him, making sure he was on the right path to the small town nearby.

Ruby swam alongside of the boat, her hazel eyes peering upward- pirate. Undeniably. He was going to be delicious.

She inhaled deeply, her pupils slanting as her teeth began to sharpen, she smirked to herself and began to swim upwards.

JJ looked up from the map, reaching for the oar as he got a bad feeling- pausing as he felt another hand wrap around it as well.

Ruby froze, her siren song getting caught in her throat as her eyes and teeth returned back to normal- he was breathtaking.

JJ stayed as still as he possibly could, fear was evident on his features for a moment before they softened as he took her in.

Pirates and mermaids were forbidden, deemed far too dangerous for each other. Banned from ever being together. The one mutual rule they had.

Good thing neither of them ever followed the rules..

Chapter 2

There was a hurricane coming in. Hurricane Agatha is what they're calling it. And Sage is absolutely terrified. Yea, she loves the rain and storms but a hurricane? It's an unknown thing to her, that's what's scary about it.

"I have to head out before the hurricane gets worse. I don't want to get stuck in it." Sage looks over at John B as he starts to laugh at that. To them hurricanes are normal, especially type 1's. But he's not one to make fun of fears, knowing his are equally, if not more stupid.

"I'll drive you, it's already raining and the kook castles are far." Secretly, he was actually pretty happy to drive her. He'll never admit it to any of the pogues, especially JJ, but he loves her company. It's like the absence of chaos. Little did he know, she had the same feeling whenever they were together.

The ride to her house was peaceful. Serene, The only sound being the rain hitting against the top of the Twinkie. There wasn't much talking but that's normal, they can talk to each other normally in groups but as soon as they're alone it gets hard. Both always afraid of saying the wrong thing and ruining the peace.

"Thanks for the ride, don't do anything stupid while I'm gone." He reaches over and ruffles her hair with his hands, causing her to immediately smile, all of the worry washing away.

"I'll see you tomorrow Sage." At that, she gets out of the van and runs up to the front door to avoid the rain, now pouring down. As soon as she gets inside, the tension feels off. Dirty shoes being by the entryway, mud being tracked up the stairs, lamps on even though no one's in the room.

Her families not at the dining room table, even though they always have dinner at exactly 6 o'clock. The tables not set, dead petals from the sunflowers resting next to the vase. It's messy. Her house is never messy, not with her mom around. It's like she can sense a mess, a single speck of dirt on the floor and it's gone in a second. Normally.

She goes up to the second floor, her eyes stuck on the mud tracks. The mud in the carpet, the way sections of it has already hardened showing it's been there for a while.

It's abnormally quiet. The only light being on upstairs being the one all the way down the hall. The light from the all too familiar dinosaur lamp from her 6 year old brothers room.

The house has never really been unique. It feels more like a museum than a house. Rich paintings that any normal person wouldn't buy hanging on the walls where most families would have family pictures.

She goes into his room, Reagan being curled up in a tight ball on his bed with a bag of chips. Foods never allowed in any of their rooms. Especially chips.

"Reagan where is everyone?" She sits down next to him on his bed as he turns over, his eyes red and tears stained on his puffed up cheeks.

"Mommy and daddy started fighting, they both left." That wasn't very surprising to her, the fight at least, that's normal. If there isn't a fight between any of them it isn't a normal day. But, throughout all this time they've never left him home alone.

She ended up falling asleep in his room, knowing that as soon as she left he'd wake back up, neither of the parents getting home throughout the entire night.

Covid, Ema: "Rimarrà e va gestito, si va verso vaccini annuali"

E' lo "scenario più plausibile" anche per gli esperti dell'Agenzia europea del farmaco Ema, nonostante permanga in Sars-CoV-2 ancora una certa "imprevedibilità". Di certo, "il virus rimarrà e va gestito al meglio" e bisogna cominciare a pensarci da subito, per farsi trovare pronti. A spiegare all'Adnkronos Salute come si sta muovendo l'Ema su questo piano è Marco Cavaleri, responsabile della strategia per le minacce sanitarie e i vaccini dell'ente regolatorio Ue, dopo che una settimana fa è rimbalzato sui media Usa un documento della Fda che mostra come anche l'agenziaamericana stia valutando e pianificando un possibile schema annuale per le vaccinazioni Covid sul modello influenza. "Noi ne avevamo già parlato l’anno scorso e concordiamo che ragionare in termini di rivaccinazione annuale con possibile vaccino aggiornato, rimane lo scenario più plausibile, nonostante le incertezze relative a un virus ancora poco prevedibile", osserva Cavaleri. L'Agenzia europea del farmaco effettivamente già a luglio 2022, parlando dei futuri vaccini Covid e delle modalità di approvazione, accennava al fatto che "potremmo essere in grado di spostarci verso un quadro simile a quello" attualmente usato "per i vaccini antinfluenzali, che non richiede lapresentazione di dati clinici prima dell'approvazione del vaccino aggiornato annualmente". E aveva ribadito ancora a dicembre scorso, per voce proprio di Cavaleri, che probabilmente finiremo a dover "aggiornare regolarmente i vaccini anti-Covid per offrire la rivaccinazione ai gruppi vulnerabili, come facciamo" ogni anno "con il vaccino antinfluenzale". Dal canto suo l'Organizzazione mondiale della sanità si è mostrata più cauta: il segretario esecutivo del gruppo consultivo strategico Sage, Joachim Hombach, nei giorni scorsi ha evidenziato che sarebbe prematuro dare ora una risposta definitiva su quanto spesso dovremo ripetere la vaccinazione,perché il virus sembra ancora instabile e non è diventato del tutto stagionale, ma allo stesso tempo ha ammesso che una vaccinazione annuale è ipotizzabile. Anche all'Ema la riflessione è in corso. "Entro fine marzo il quadro sarà più chiaro", dice Cavaleri, che spiega come l'attività decisionale e di pianificazione "riguarderà soprattutto l'eventuale aggiornamento dei vaccini".
