Uffie - Sadmoney
With the release of EP “Toyko Love Hotel” on Valentine’s Day, her latest album marks almost a decade since the release of Uffie’s debut EP ”Sex Dreams and Denim Jeans”. To coincide with her release on this rather momentous day, “Sadmoney” writes love and how the greatest things in live are free. The track speaking of an older and wiser Uffie, eschews the ice-cool nonchalance and the party-friendly hedonism of her past. Swapping the electronics for a more stripped-back sound, the track while flowing with its sedated downtempo still manages to retain what makes Uffie tick. With her personable humor and the glint of her youthful glee, Uffie’s introspective track is an easy listen that flutters to its lofty production and contrasting bass lines.

Album Review: ‘Tokyo Love Hotel’ EP - Uffie
A lot of artists and producers in 2019 owe a huge debt to Uffie.
Charli XCX’s bratty drawl? Uffie (the two even teamed up on ‘Babygirl’ from Charli’s 2017 mixtape, Number 1 Angel). PC Music’s scratchy, off-kilter glitch pop? Just listen to Uffie’s 2010 debut, Sex Dreams and Denim Jeans. The sparse, lo-fi beats of many a Soundcloud rapper? Uffie was already posting her own compositions during the halcyon days of MySpace (RIP).
After a six year hiatus to focus on motherhood – albeit with a few tracks here and there – the French/American singer (born Anna-Catherine Harley) takes her rightful place on the pop throne once more with the release of her latest EP, Tokyo Love Hotel, proving as frank as ever before, if a lot more bittersweet.
First single ‘Drugs’ sees her beg a hedonistic lover ‘The drugs don't love you like I do/Don't walk away from me tonight/The clubs won't treat you like I do/Don't walk away from us tonight’ across a sparse, reverb-laden stratosphere. On ‘No Regrets,’ she proudly proclaims ‘I'm so cold, so cold/Yeah, what do you expect?/Let me down before/Don't ask for my respect,’ the ‘best bad friend’ with trap-flavoured beats as icy as her demeanour. ‘Papercuts’ provides a woozy, bass-laden trip into the void as Uffie finds herself all tangled up in a one-sided love affair, trying to goad her object of affection into pushing the knife in deeper and to ‘Stab me in the heart, babe,’ while the melodious 90s pop swoon of standout ‘My Heart’ features some of the greatest pop hooks in recent memory: - ‘How come being such a sad girl/Makes me wanna be a bad girl?‘ and ‘My heart keeps beating the shit outta me’ – the kind Lana and Ariana would probably cut a bitch for and Twitter stans will lovingly place in their bios.
‘Sadmoney,’ meanwhile, harks back to the cutting commentary of Sex Dreams and Denim Jeans, a swirling, guitar-laced critique of millennial excess, hyper-consumerism and the constant need for validation in the social media age, Uffie’s declaration of ‘I'll be pretty till it kills me/Pretty even if it kills me/Say I'm sorry to my future self‘ sitting heavy in the gut.
The EP soon ends with the cinematic flourish of ‘Nathaniel,’ Uffie’s aching nostalgia wrapped in a futuristic whirl of bleeps and moody reverb whilst backed against an ‘Umbrella’-esque beat, sounding defeated as she pleads: ‘I don't wanna hurt you/I just wanna love you/Why is it so hard to/Do one without the other?’ Although Uffie has worn her heart on her sleeve before, ‘Nathaniel proves especially poignant as she paints a cosy yet mundane scene of young, fleeting love.
Tokyo Love Hotel is nowhere near as bombastic or as snarky as the iconic Sex Dreams and Denim Jeans, but the low-key feel allows the singer to display some true depth. It’s a wistful, rather world-weary record, understandably so as life has dramatically changed for the singer this past decade or so, and with it has come a simpler, stripped-back sonic palette (which, admittedly, feels a little repetitive at times).
And yet, despite her time away from the scene, Tokyo Love Hotel doesn’t so much as symbolise a new beginning for Uffie, but rather signals the next phase in her gloriously messy, beautifully complicated exploration of life and love. As she recently told Paper Magazine:
‘[…] I think because a lot of these songs are so personal, an evaluation of what I'm going through is in progress, and those evaluations aren't necessarily final. I'm analyzing my heart and the things I've gone through over the last few years, but I don't have complete answers.’
And may the quest for those answers never end. Welcome back, Uffie…
