It's painted on 15 welded steel plates, with an aluminium structure on the back that allow the painting to appear 5 cm distanced from the wall, almost suspended.

“Love, Love, Love (III)” (2018) - oil, oxidation and engraving on welded steel plates, 75x65 cm. This was the third and last painting of a series inspired by Erika/#IsabelleHuppert in "La Pianiste" by #ElfriedeJelinek (book) and #MichaelHaneke (film) and the need of love, any kind it can be, any shades it can have: tender, raw, physical, platonic, ordinary, obsessive, sick... 🔥 In the following fragments you can see something of the work in progress, included the collection of the rust which I removed before starting painting, and collected in little test tubes. Sabatino Cersosimo is a 39 year old artist from Italy. He uses a plethora of materials to create his masterpieces, like oil paint, chipwood, and even rust on steel. Sabatino picked up drawing and painting in his early years, but didn’t get serious about it until he decided to enrol in art school:

...I loved drawing and painting since I was a child. The Academy of Fine Art, in 1994, was the beginning of a more conscious concept. Art was a way to express myself, to give a concrete consistence to my dreams, thoughts, fears.

Some of Sabatino’s favorite artists include Francis Bacon, Egon Schiele, Lucian Freud, Anselm Kiefer, and Arnold Böcklin.

"Fregio (Second Movement)"[SOLD], Sabatino Cersosimo

Almost three years ago, as I was at the opening of the Archeological Museum in Turin, I was fascinated from some old roman friezes ("fregi" in italian), and I imagined how beautiful is a face emerging from the stone, from earth.. and from rusts, as consequent thought concering my works. So that´s it, the second time I try it, after the first time with the Experiment auf Stahl XXIII in 2013 (sold here on saatchi after a Showdown contest). It is painted on 4 welded steel plates. It is hung through magnets on the back (see pictures).

"L'Apparenza", Sabatino Cersosimo

A face appearing or fading. Appearance as an unsecure interpratation of reality, because of light, because of perception, because of human reason... All the parts you perceive as red/brownish are rusted. The oxidation process is started in a natural way, with water, salt and other materials. The fascination of this process is that, although the painting is covered by layers of varnishes and wax to protect it from the humidity and air, the rust can not be completely stopped, so that with the time it will change and develop in a surprising way. The surface is a 4-welded steel plates, and it is hung with magnets and little copper pipes behind it.

In this quite busy moment exhibiting in Berlin, Pietrasanta and Munich, I would like to share "Stardust", the new painting for which I have decided to try using only three different kinds of white (Carrara's, titanium and zinc white). Let's see if time will warm it up and turn it into pink 😉 "Stardust" (2029), oil and oxidation on steel, 25x25 cm, was inspired by the wonderful expressive actor Terence Stamp in Fellini's short film "Toby Dammit" as part of the thrilogy "Histoires extraordinaires" (I love the italian title: Tre passi nel delirio). "Don't Listen When I Scream (VIII)" (2015) is a painting (oil on the figure, bitumen on the beackground) on chipboard, another one of my several works on wood from last years. It's the opposite feeling to the previous two posts, where a man is quiet sleeping on a light blue background. With this more dramatic version, as the dark background and the awoken figure suggests, I wanted to reflect on how night is not always the moment of sleep but, exactly opposite to it, can be spent in vigil. "Don't listen when I scream (VI)" (on show), Sabatino Cersosimo

From the series "Don't listen when I scream", a metaphor of how man face life. All the parts you perceive as red/brownish are rusted. The oxidation process is started in a natural way, with water, salt and other materials. The fascination of this process is that, although the painting is covered by layers of varnishes and wax to protect it from the humidity and air, the rust can not be completely stopped, so that with the time it will change and develop in a surprising way. The metal surface is made of combined steel plates of 0,5 mm thick. The painting is mounted on an aluminum structure/frame of 4 cm thick behind it.

"A Beautiful Day (in Nara)", Sabatino Cersosimo

People have a big meaning to me, so this japanese boy is the portrait of a beautiful time I had in the japanese city. All the parts you perceive as red/brownish are rusted. The oxidation process is started in a natural way, with water, salt and other materials. The fascination of this process is that, although the painting is covered by layers of varnishes and wax to protect it from the humidity and air, the rust can not be completely stopped, so that with the time it will change and develop in a surprising way. The painting is made of 4 hand welded steel plates hung with 4 little copper pipes (on the 4 corners of the back side) containing magnets, so that they can be adjusted depending on nails on the wall and at the same time they create a space between the painting itself and wall.

"Auf der Haut geschrieben", Sabatino Cersosimo

As the title (in english "Written on the Skin") suggests, our skin can be a surface where our life, our memories are written, in a physical (like the tattoo -"mum"- on the chest) or metaphorical way. Scars, marks, the sensation to the touch and how it can changes with the time, are only a few of the memories that our body can carry. I have the feeling that these "traces" of time are also in the technique I use , both on wood and steel.
