Yusuke: Absolutely. It is an unparalleled luxury to lay sight on the physical manifestation of another's self-image. Not just any artist can claim to have borne witness to the likes of Personas, or Mementos. It would be foolish not to use this opportunity to incorporate these concepts into an art piece.

Akechi: I... see. Well, you have fun with that.

Yusuke: Ah, before you go. Would you be so kind as to show me your own Persona? I'd love to use him as a model for one of my sketches.

Akechi: ...I'm going to have to decline.

Akechi: Oh? Something so cliché coming from you is rather surprising, Sae-san. I suspect the Phantom Thieves have rubbed off on you quite a bit.

Sae: That's a possibility. Maybe you could do with some change yourself? Like, drop the "cool customer" act and just live in the moment?

Yusuke: Yes... His murderous screeching may be unsettling, but I've come to realize that is simply a part of who he is. Perhaps it would be worthwhile to paint a portrait of him, knowing this...

Makoto: If you do, I'd love to see it. ...I'd like to hear what he thinks of it, too.

Actually, no. lemme recap now because I bet once I meet the Big Bad and beat them it'll be like 2 hours of cutscenes and dialogue.

Okay SOMEONE remind me LATER to sum up Empress, because I completed it. Note to self, it's around 12/2 in your screencaps.

So Shido wins the elections because it turns out that no one saw the Thieves' big calling card for him, and those who did didn't remember it. There is obviously Some Shit going on with people's mass apathy syndrome.

Because Persona only has one theme and it's "people will be too lazy to pay attention to the truth, fucking sheeple," I guess.

/clucks tongue. I'm not really impressed by this turn of the story, I'm kinda Over the slow increase in apathy that winds up being the undoing of the world until we beat up a god and save everyone. This is the third time, I would have shaken shit up by having the Hidden Big Bad send the Thieves a calling card, demanding they come protect their Treasure, and then you meet the Big Bad and just gimme a villain with a motive, goddamn. It's a supernatural story, the sky's the limit!

I shouldn't kvetch too much yet. Anyway, Shido admits to his crimes, but the populace doesn't seem to care and still supports him.

Shido's lackeys basically go "okay Shido had a major meltdown buuuuuut we can still carry his agenda forward bc if we don't, we're all going down with the ship here."

Excellent question. In P4G I had a pretty strong idea what was doing that and here I do not, can y'all drop some hints?

Morgana points out that the general public has a Palace and has a Treasure. It's Mementos. So if the crew wants to force a mass shift in the world's perception, they can do that. But like all other Palaces, when the Treasure is taken, Mementos will collapse, to be replaced with new, corrected cognition.

In the process, the crew will lose their powers. Oh and Morgana is gonna die.

The game hasn't said that part yet but if they didn't kill Ryuji, they're gonna kill Morgana, fucking bet.

This was actually where I got my idea of what Morgana is. Morgana's upgraded Persona is Mercurius/Hermes. Yanno, the god of messages, of thieves, of swiftness, and well-known classic psychopomp.

Morgana keeps remembering himself being born in Mementos. He's without a doubt some manifestation of humanity's rebellion against systems, the literally cognitive patron saint of Phantom Thieves. He's a mascot in the most literal sense, an emblem of good luck for the Thieves' work.

Even the fact he's a cat kind of fits in nicely. Cats are free spirits who opt-into being it other people. They are creatures of choice.

I'm gonna be big sad when Morgana fucking dies lemme tell you. I'm pretty sure he's, like, sustained by Mementos and the plan is to collapse it? Yeah, Morgana is fucked.

Goddamn HERMES, that's so cool. Morgana, our psychopomp into the bowels of the collective unconsciousness.

so uh. is it a hot take to say that, uh, the last segment of this game here, the Mementos Depths, is the ugliest place in the game? Just wondering because wow working through this place, I was struck by how completely aesthetically unappealing all of this is. It should be mysterious and eerie but mostly I am finding it.... blurgh. I thought Kaneshiro's Palace was pretty unappealing too, but this is bad enough I feel the need to remark on it.

The Depths of Mementos is a prison of complacency.

All of the Shadows the Thieves defeated are in the prison cells. They are relieved to be there, where they don't have to think. Everything is taken care of for them.

Man, remember back in Persona 3 when it turned out that defeating all the Full Moon shadows was actually the thing that doomed the world? Wouldn't it be hilarious is the Thieves fucked all this up the whole time? l m a o.

I honestly don't know if that's what's happening here yet, I haven't reached, like, the Explanation, but it does feel a bit like alllllllll the way back at the start of the liveblog when I was contending with the ethics of the entire idea of stealing someone's heart and what it does. The game went out of its way to justify doing it with Shido's attempted suicide, but the bridge to far for me (and thankfully for Ann too) was killing these people.

But now what happens seems to be akin to ego death instead, and.... I dunno, man, is that much different than murder?

this summer heatwave was reaching record high temperatures, you were sure if you stayed out in the sun for too long youd melt into a puddle and evaporate almost immediately. you wanted nothing more than to feel the cool ocean breeze on your face and soak up rays in the sun. however, just like the rest of the phantom thieves, you and ryuji were broke and had decided to stay inside for most of summer vacation. whenever you werent grouped up together at rens house for mementos business, chances are ryuji was laying on your couch, complaining about the heat with a bag of frozen vegetables on his forehead, but you dont mind. if youre together, everything becomes colored by him. if you were into aura reading you swear everyone around the blonde would be a bright and sunny yellow, but yours turned blue the moment you met him. if he was the sun, youd be the ever changing sky, never one without the other, the tide and the sand.

despite the random movie playing on the tv, your attention was focused solely on your dramatic friend sitting next to you. ever since youve joined the phantom thieves, you and ryuji have been inseparable. ren and ann have called you the dynamic duo on multiple occasions, meanwhile morgana is simply just jealous that someone likes ryuji enough to want to hang out with him that often.

“oh come on ryuji, the fans are running on overdrive, theres no way you can still be that hot.” you rolled your eyes as he complains for the nth time this hour. “thats what you think, but i swear im gonna die if this heatwave lasts another day, man.” he sighs, sinking further into the couch. “if the heat doesnt kill you, then i will.” you mutter under your breath, but ryuji hears you loud and clear. “oh so you want a fight, is that it? lets take it to the metaverse right here, right now!” ryuji yells back with more energy than youve seen him with since school let out for the break. he puts his fists up pretending to swing punches at you across the couch, proceeding to drop the entire bag of (not really frozen anymore) peas on the hard floor of your living room. the bag breaks open, littering the vegetables all over the place. “oh shit. how thin is the materials of those frickin bags?” he quickly says, panic obvious in his voice. you sigh, quickly getting up to grab the broom to sweep up the mess ryuji had made. 

he follows you to the kitchen like a lost puppy, offering to clean everything up *plus* scrubbing your whole house before you quickly reassure him its not a big deal. “i doubt we were ever going to cook those up anyways, dont worry about it ryuji!” “but still! i feel bad for making a mess of your house. i dont want to give your mom any reason to hate me.” you raise an eyebrow at that. “oh? why do you want to be on my moms good side so bad? you planning on moving in or something?” he shrugs. “with how much weve been hanging out i might as well. last thing i need is to be banned from seeing you over some bags of frozen vegetables.”

theres a mysterious feeling inside of you, and you feel heat rising to your cheeks over that. hed go through all the trouble of deep cleaning your house just so he can still hang out with you? itd obviously never need to come to that, but the fact that its the first thought he has cant help but make you feel special, despite how silly it is. of course he wants to be able to hang out with you, hes your best friend. if he didnt, that would be more of an issue than anything else. “you could always just sneak through the window, you know.” you mutter without realizing. he snickers. “i dont think i play the role of knight in shining armor very well, but what the hell? im always willing to try new things.” he laughs at his own remark, completely oblivious to how much redder your face has gotten in the small amount of time youve been sweeping up the peas from the floor. it may be hot outside, but surely not that hot, right?

“well how about you go make yourself useful and get something less likely to… explode for us to cool off?” you quickly respond to change the subject. ryuji thinks for a second before grabbing his shoes, stating hell be right back. you feel a weight be lifted off your shoulders you were unaware of as soon as the door shuts behind him.

theres never been any kind of tension that youve noticed before between you and ryuji, so where did this random feeling come from? you cant help but feel different around him, has he always looked at you with such admiration and you just never noticed? with how hot your body is now you might as well shove yourself into the freezer.

putting the broom back you sit back on the couch noticing how empty the room really feels without ryuji there anymore. where had he even run off to anyways? you groan, noticing that the temperature had gone up another 2 degrees, before instantly feeling bad for sending ryuji out into town during the hottest part of the day. that was definitely a lapse in your judgement, but surely hed be fine with how quick he was to go along with it. unless he just wanted to get away from you? wait where did that thought come from? you cant help but internally sigh at how youve managed to make the situation even more awkward without him even being there.

after about another 5 minutes of sitting alone with your thoughts (terrifying, isnt it?) ryuji bursts through the front door with a grocery bag in his hands. “i dont know about you but i think some ice cream is the perfect thing right now!” your face drops the second you realize its dripping, presumably already melted from the trip back in the scorching sun. ryuji notices a second later, quickly dropping it outside by the front porch. you cant help but find his slightly pouting face adorable, and also totally heart wrenching. “you know, i think youre on the right track there with ice cream. how about we just go down to the convenience store together? im pretty sure ren is working there right now anyways. then we dont have to worry about anything melting!” 

ryuji was just about ready to give up on going anywhere else today, especially if it meant having to walk around again in the heat, but he couldnt resist the sweet smile on your face. hed do anything for you in a heartbeat if youd always look at him so sweetly. he was so caught up in his staring that he completely forgot to answer you, you having to snap your fingers in his face just to get him to come back down to earth, because surely when he was with you he was in heaven. “huh? oh! yeah, lets get going!”

you both ran to the train station, out of breath and sweaty by the time youd have reached shibuya. you almost gave ren a heart attack with the amount of noise caused by you and ryuji walking in to the convenience store. after almost getting him fired for talking way longer than he should have been, you and ryuji walk back to the station in no rush, eating your popsicles quietly. 

“what flavor did you get?” you ask ryuji as you stand waiting by the station. “cherry limeade, you wanna try?” he brings the popsicle closer to your face, assuming youd simply grab it in your own hand. what ryuji was not expecting, however, was for you to lean yourself closer to him, taking a lick of the popsicle while it was still held in his hand. his eyes turn wide like a rabbit would, incredibly surprised as you get closer to him, he swears he can feel the tingling electricity throughout his entire body. where did this boldness come from, and why are you so nonchalant about it? he can fell his ego deflating when his whole arm shakes after you pull away and lick your lips, the artificial fruit flavoring tasting cold yet electrifying. “ooh that ones super tasty!” you exclaim, and ryuji swears he sees your eyes shining.

your icy treat smells of the sweet ocean, like someones squeezed a freshly picked lemon into it. “do you wanna try mine? its blue lemonade.” you hold the popsicle up to him in the same way, but ryujis too nervous to even grab it out of your hand, let alone lean in like you had. “oh uhm… no thanks, im allergic to uh…. lemons?” he stammers out, leaning back a bit. you shrug. “more for me then!”

ryuji was sure it was getting even hotter outside, even though it was painfully obvious the sun would be setting soon. he tried not to make eye contact with you again, but the image of you staring at him so excitedly a moment ago was still fresh on his mind. 

he regrets when he gives in and looks over at you again, as youve gotten down to the bottom of the popsicle by now. hes even more surprised to see the way you take almost the whole stick into your mouth, and suck on the remaining of the icy treat. he feels his eyes travel down to your adams apple, watching it move as you swallow. he notices the mixture of sweat and fruit juice dripping down from your chin, which in any other situation he might have made fun of you for. suddenly hes more flustered than hes been all day, and cant help but look away suspiciously quick.

as soon as you turn to look at him, he feels much smaller under your gaze, unable to hide how much you affected him, without you even realizing. now you know its not just you whos been feeling the tension thicken more as today has dragged on. youre not sure what to say, or if you should even say anything. clearly theres something going on between the two of you, but neither of you are able to muster up enough courage to address it.

youre about ready to just say your goodbyes and make your way back home, but ryuji decides to speak up before you can act out your walk of shame. “hey y/n, have you noticed anything uhm, you know, weird between us recently?” he asks, you cant tell if youve ever heard ryuji sound so unsure before. you pretend to think for a moment before responding. “now that you mention it the air seems much hotter today, and thicker too.” you dont miss the way you see ryujis face heat up at that remark. he mentally curses for not having a way to hide the way the blush creeps up his neck and ears.

“yeah i think ive noticed that too. but i havent been able to put my finger on what exactly has been bugging me.” you, unlike some would say about ryuji, arent stupid. you both know that he knows whats going on here, but hes going to make you say it first. you hold back a sigh, something youve been doing a lot recently, and finally find the right words. “i think that theres… something going on between us, ryuji.” you dont dare raise your eyes from their look on the ground. you can see ryuji let out a breath of relief, he wasnt sure if you were actually going to go along with this. “yeah, i see what you mean… i uh, i mean i see it too.” he drags his foot against the pavement of the station square. your heart that points to him is a deep blue, like the sky before the storm clouds build, or the ocean on a late night stroll.

even if you swallow, your words fill up on the tip of your tongue, feeling so close to overflowing. “have you ever thought of us as more than friends?” you ask in such a low voice you werent sure if he would hear it, and ryuji almost didnt over the loud beating of his heartbeat. now what is he supposed to do? there was so hint in your tone of voice that you thought of him the same way. he wasnt even sure if you were nervous, for all he knew you were more uncomfortable than anything else. he struggles to think of an answer that wont totally humiliate himself and also not hurt your feelings. “well… i guess so, yeah.” he responds. he doesnt miss the way you tense up at his answer, and he feels his heart sink.

you finally look up at him, that same sweet look in your eyes from earlier, and suddenly he thinks that maybe its so bad he decided to be honest. “oh my god really? wow.. im so relieved!” you sigh out. ryuji thinks he likes that tone of your voice. “i honestly thought i was going crazy! like i never noticed just how… close we are until today! everything just seemed to click and i swear i dont even know where it came from but im starting to really like-” ryuji leans in closer to you, effectively shutting you up with a nervous kiss to you lips. you can feel him smirk against you when you melt into the kiss. you feel yourself return to the original soft blue youve grown to love the moment he embraces you.

reluctantly pulling away, ryuji wipes the excess popsicle off of his lips with the same stupid smile on his face. you stick your tongue out at him, showing now that your tongue is purple instead of blue, and that immediately wipes the confident expression on his face. youre starting to get used to seeing ryuji flustered and different shades of pink or red. you grab his hand, dragging him off to go catch your train. 

as the doors close behind you, youre suddenly reminded of what he said earlier. “wait a minute, i thought you said you were allergic to lemons!” he rubs the back of his neck, embarrassed. “well i only said that because i was too nervous to.. you know, grab the popsicle out of your hand.” you cant help but laugh at him. “whats so funny? you act like if you were in my shoes you wouldn't have reacted the same way!” you shrug your shoulders. “summer isnt over yet, i guess well just have to wait and see until next time.”  he sighs, exasperated, before whispering under his breath “youre gonna be the death of me.” you smile at him. this is perfect, youd wish for nothing more, just the two of you. like this summer, it melts in your mouth like your feeling of love.

ryuji kissing the homies (the homie in question being yusuke) to help him out with his art is an incredible concept and im obsessed. you know, it's not gay if it's for art and shit.

plus, goro keeps leaving him on read and ryuji wants to go show someone around all his favorite food spots. just because they're kissing and spending time together, that doesn't mean anything. it's not like that!

GLASSES. I gave Makoto glasses. They have glasses. So with the shorter, messier hair, the way it parts to the side kinda like Sae's, and the glasses, Makoto really wants to distance themselves from who they were under Kobayakawa. Of course, they prefer wearing contacts. They don't wanna look like a "nerd"

Now, Makoto's the same height as canon, but. Haru's about 5 cm taller, so it's. Taller soft boyfriend and slightly smaller grunge partner who tells the server "he asked for no pickles"

And yeah, they'd bind sometimes, but safely, and only at home or hanging out with the Thieves, or out with Haru. They feel fine without it, but, it does scratch an itch that isn't always there

so officially finished kiwami 2, majima saga aside which won't take long. ignore how this isn't a screenshot, this was easier

i'm just gonna dump the thousand words or so of thoughts i put in my fic doc here for posterity and anyone who might get a kick out of reading them. lots and lots of messiness, vague spoilers for rgg online plus one itsy bitsy reference to the stage play

hot take that there were maybe some redeemable elements in the last bit (mainly all the times kaoru and ryuji talk to each other) but so much of it is so fucking stupid and full of HE WOULD NOT DO THAT (mainly kiryu). idk. i don’t hate it but it needed some work

interesting things learned tho, ryuji didn’t expect to live long, he says he made it further than he was expecting. as we now know from rggo, he already knew about his jingweonha connection and was actively ignoring it (which is why terada marks him for death in the first place. slot han in here?) and remembered the night where his father died (despite being like 2 at the time, at most). kiryu also reiterates that he sees nishiki in ryuji, which i think is fair (and the stage play people clearly agreed). ‘the least i can do is honour a man like that’ is an interesting attitude to have. also ryuji is like ‘i see why my sister fell fer ya’ which is not quite the japanese line (ish) but it’s also not the straightest thing he’s ever said. ryuji also very clearly would have doted on kaoru quite a lot, if they’d lived together as children or otherwise, and i really think we missed out on seeing more of them. maybe i’m just soft for that kind of thing.

i feel like a more interesting conundrum would have been both ryuji and kiryu being wounded from their fight, delaying it again (cos they’d done it once no reason not to do it again) but neither are moving the way they should and (believing the bomb is real) kaoru has to pick one to carry and one to leave behind. (maybe halfway down the stairs or smth?) it wouldn’t be especially original but it would make more sense imo. her going down the lift does nothing but slow her down (ig she has access to the controls and doesn’t use them for hashtag drama reasons) which i don’t think fundamentally changes her position that much from before the second ryuji fight. it also gives her smth to fucking do that isn’t just crying and grabbing fences and doing that dumbfuck charge that i don’t think she would have done (her gun hadn’t gone far! then again i have hindsight and am thinking clearer than she is). anyway kiryu pushes her to take ryuji (guilt over nishiki?) and locks them in the lift thingy and sends them down, fully ready to die now. his and ryuji’s wounds mirror each other but i feel like kiryu got the shorter end of the stick? plus he was shot slightly earlier so has been bleeding for longer.

i cannot say this enough, kiryu would not leave ryuji. like, he just wouldn’t. if there was even a chance he was still alive, he would make sure he got to someone or he would at least try. he’s at his most inactive in cutscenes in kiwami 2 (i think) and it’s frustrating as a player asdfghjkl

ALSO if sudo and date and haruka went to the effort of preparing and going up in that helicopter, why didn’t they also prepare a rope?? or smth to rescue people who were on top of the tower???? they clearly knew there was a bomb up there (beforehand or not is unclear but we don’t see them have a conversation about it) and want kiryu and co. to leave. (and not MAKE OUT ON A ROOFTOP they were really going at it huh, ryuji’s ?corpse? is right fucking there guys oh and goda jin’s? he sort of vanishes from that last bit)

also it would have been kind of funny if, while there was still that ten minutes, everyone sprinted for the stairs and made it down and they’re waiting for the building to blow and when it inevitably doesn’t they’re all just standing there checking their watches like is it late? did smth break? who wants to be the sucker and go check? can we call an ambulance for the two idiots? majima is down in the construction yard i think so he’d probably send nishida, maybe?

idk kiryu has no interest in kaoru to me. he treats her no differently to anyone else aside from the two times they kiss, both of which feel very out of character for him, and that romance subplot takes away any and all girlboss power kaoru had. she went from beating men up and threatening them with bokuto and shit to like, i love man, so sad. (they knew each other like a week!!!!!! and they’re dying for each other!!!! give me a break!!!!!) that’s not to detract from the awful fucking week she has of learning who her family are (some racism in there??? i’m not qualified to speak on that, maybe it’s just the gang thing, ) and then watching literally all of them die one after another. except mama, she’s fine and never appears again. it’s very much aiming for a ‘she can be a ‘woman’ (i.e. be emotional and like cute things and not try and match the locker room attitude of the men) and also take names’ but it doesn’t succeed at that at all. from kiryu’s conversation with her on their little date thing (which is cute, i’ll give it that) he was telling her to be true to herself, right? it's his go to line. which suggests that her kicking dudes in the face a lot and working incredibly hard (she’s a prodigy, in multiple fields! this doesn’t get explored enough) is NOT her true self, the one who plays with teddy bears and falls in love is. which, again, not that those two things can’t co-exist, but the game doesn’t allow them to either. just, ah. more wasted woman potential in a yakuza game. yayoi gets the same treatment :((( you gave me two step on me yakuza ladies and dropped the ball on both of them, come on guys. hopefully she gets to live a little in 8.

Daigo’s kidnapping story – new and improved (part 2)

part 1

Ryuji will manage to fracture a bone in his leg in the last stretch of the journey – in the fight with the assassins. And of course he's going to valiantly hide it, like a dumbass.

So when Ryuji and Daigo finally managed to finally get to Ryuji's guys (his personal guys, who can be trusted and/or were confirmed to be safe) and have to deal with that family with the grudge before they make a huge ruckus and set Ryuji up, and fuck Omi over, before all that – Ryuji checked out from exhaustion and fever.

So yeah. Daigo had to take the reins and deal with all this shit on his own: manage Ryuji's people, settle everything. Because otherwise they all are getting killed, and the war with Tojo may get even uglier.

And everything has to be done quietly, too, while saving face, to avoid worsening the situation. The status quo is shitty right now, but they (Daigo) still have to uphold it. But he needs to (technically) help the enemy to do that. Gotta work with resources you have. 

And Daigo's involvement in all this was known only to some of Ryuji's men, and even some of them think it was all part of Ryuji's plan from the start.

They do call Daigo aniki, though, and scramble around to help him in all necessary ways.

Ryuji wakes up in a couple of days, all bleary and crusty, and the hideout is clean, fridge is full of beer, Evanescence is blasting on the radio, Ryuji's dad has no idea all this ever happened. And Daigo is there, with a bowl of bland soup, all like: "You're welcome. Now slurp, bitch." Because Ryuji is not gonna die on him after all this work 😤😑 👉

Not gonna let his boys sneak him in fast food either. Only bland foods for recovery. Grandma taught him that, or nanny. Or tv shows, even. Broth-therapy. Grandmas and doctors agree – soup is the way.

And if Ryuji behaves, he'll maybe get some tasty stuff in his broth too. Like a cube of tofu 😌

Ryuji: this is torture Daigo: ok, 2 cubes

But the guy with a haystack on his head has no complaining rights. He looks like a creature. Unshaved. Scruffled. Darkly scruffled. The dark roots are very noticeable on his hair, too.

Ryuji's boys will be praying on Daigo no aniki, no one else is brave enough to sit on Ryuji's bed and force-feed him soups and medicine.

No one else probably dared to stay at the hideout all the time, but Daigo's technically a prisoner, so someone has to be there, it's their work… so they probably left one or two guys to hang out in the main room at night. But when Ryuji woke up, he just sent them scrambling, for being too loud at night.

He was gambling with this, because after this Daigo could up walk out at any point. But he didn't do it so far, so…

– Everything is annoying to Ryuji, because stupid health is stupid, and he feels weaker and he hates that. No control over his plans, his men, his clan, his body. It's all stretching thin. Unpleasant. Also his men seeing him weak is the worst. Especially with the control over everything slipping away.

And Daigo is feeling bad about it all too. After losing to Ryuji back in the day, when he got out of prison Daigo didn't want to show himself in front of his loyal subordinates… so it all feels so familiar. And very annoying, yes.

Ryuji, meanwhile, is missing staying in the forest. Because even with all the uncertainty and possible danger it was nice, with more hands-on stuff to do, more nature and creatures, and, in a way, a more clear plan of what to do.

Now that the rival family is dealt with Ryuji needs to lay low for a bit, until he more or less gets back on his feet, to get into the action properly without fainting or drawing suspicions.

Back in the forest it was way clearer who he could trust – there was only Daigo, and they had to work together. (And it could've happen a lot sooner, if someone wasn't a little bitch about it)

Now, back in civilization, Daigo can check out, walk out at any moment. There's even an opening left for him to do so, that Ryuji may or may not have put there on purpose will not admit to it either way. Ryuji doesn't think about these things, and doesn't examine them closely. It's a very intentional decision.

Daigo didn't walk out though. He also had a lot to think about, as we mentioned above.

Lately, after floating along in life for so long, after becoming a failure and a disappointment, and having decisions taken away from him, Daigo didn't see the point of doing anything, really. And after all that, getting to have good fights and real things to do was so good.

Managing the shitty dumb problem with Omi set-up, watching over Ryuji's recovery, being able to take control of things that may be small but are necessary to do, being useful. It was so freeing. Just as being able to bite back, and not forced to nod and be grateful for whatever bullshit people push on you.

And back in the forest Daigo did spill some of the bitter, angry, frustrated thoughts he never really told anyone. That he couldn't tell anyone who actually knows him, because that'll make him more of a disgusting disappointment.

"Sharing stuff with this guy works, tho, because he doesn't care." – both of them, probably.

Can't make it worse at least, so it's actually reliving – don't have to pretend so much about everything. The secret is to not think there's a whole world beyond the forest. Oh it's a classic blender. A trap.

little apartment getaway

Hideout they are at is an apartment that's partially used as an office/hangout spot. There's the living room with the exit and an open floor: lounge area with the couch, armchairs, tv, and the table, small kitchen with an counter in the corner, all the jaz. There's also a door to a little corridor with the doors to the bathroom, closet, and to the separate room. It’s small, but furnished, nothing too fancy, just a western bed, desk, and stuff.

Ryuji with his IV and provided by the boys pillows is taking up the bed in that separate room.

When boys were still nominally watching over him, they hung out in the living room at night on the watch, and Daigo slept on the old uneven couch in that separate room. 

– This all is so funny. Technically Daigo could've killed Ryuji or at least left at any moment after they left the safehouse. The pretence of needing Ryuji around on the Omi's territory to not get killed is a bit too stretched.

Daigo could've left Ryuji wandering, lost between the trees after going for a leak, or nicely shibari-ed at evening for educational purposes, and just. Walk away.

Thank you, goodbye, good luck. – Think of Daigo in some random ass clothes in the hideout, because all the camping clothes go to hard drycleaning. So he wears something cheap, bought by Ryuji's boys, a couple sizes off on the bigger side. The marshmallow jacket created visual enhancement.

– Boys brought Daigo a futon, but he wouldn't be fucking sleeping in the living room, where they watch tv for half of the night. And the small room wasn't good for it either, even after the boys cleaned the floors there.

So after they get banned to only appear only occasionally, Daigo would not stop complaining about the shitty couch with uneven cushions he has to deal with.

And Ryuji is like: Why do you sleep on it then? You can take the one in the main room. And Daigo is like: The couch in the other room. the room with the door. And many windows. Where none of your men will be at night. That couch in that room? Ryuji: Daigo: That bitch is also uneven like the sea at storm.

So yeah, I'm just saying that there's a chance, an opening to bully Daigo into sleeping on the bed too. Because who cares after the forest anyway.

Ryuji: This way, if you'll try to leave at night, I'll wake up ☝😌 Daigo, thinking about the offer to get the living room couch: Mhm. Daigo: And what are you gonna do about it, mister "I will totally not faint in the bathroom", hmm? Bite me on the ankle, so I will have to drag you around? Ryuji: Don't have to do anything >C You're so scrawny, I can just lay on you, and you wouldn't be able to move 👉

(Our favourite genre of bullying Daigo: littlest, tiniest man. In a big jacket. So smol.)

After the forest and the shitty couch, Daigo will be blacking out instantly on what's most likely this office work hours fuck bed with dozen pillows.

And when the boys accidentally put Ryuji and Daigo on the spot, they both lie and pretend Daigo is still sleeping on the couch.

They don't really talk about it. Maybe just a little, for mutual understanding that, even with all the boys' mutual reverence for Daigo aniki, this kind of implications shouldn't be spread, or it's gonna bite them both in the ass. Even with all the awkward queer solidarity about dumb social norms, there's also political subtext to consider (what's the flag for "not laying with the enemy"? 👉👌🙅‍♂😤✊👉👉👉)

And all this probably leads to the fact that they are both in the positions to heavily influence what's going on. Maybe even stop it. Or slow it, or, at least, have less casualties. Perhaps, Ryuji can NOT go and fight Kiryu, after Daigo spent so fucking long trying to keep him alive and healthy? This is kinda annoying.

Everything is annoying, really, and tense, and things are slipping out of their control but they can have some of it back? Because it's alright now. Ryuji is not dead, recovering. Kiryu is not dead. And Daigo is feeling more alive, and there's vague hope that maybe all of this can be kept this way.

It's all a possibility. A chance that's halfway there, that you kinda maybe want to believe in. Daigo wants to, deep down (even with the clear Kiryu-boners, and Ryuji's stubbornness).

For Ryuji though, considering backing away will feel like a weakness. Like running away. From his plans, his destiny and all.

He does consider it though. Because after the whole forest trip, after waking up to the sound of rain tapping on the window with someone drooling on your arm felt better than doing that whole coup plan. It felt like something he's been missing. Like some things that are right to do no longer fit into his life for some reason.

All of this hangs in the air.

– Sometimes I think about the almost melodramatic stubborn way Daigo and Ryuji didn't talk about how they felt in that hideout.  Because denial and plausible deniability. No admitting you care about each other, nope.

But maybe they were also postponing it. Somewhat knowing it's unavoidable with all the talks about leaving, rainy days, take out, watching over Ryuji's training walks around the apartment, napping on each other's shoulders – they still skittered around.

Both for denial purposes, aaaand to pretend there's still time left to do nothing and be at ease.

Understanding enough to maybe feel like they're on the same page at the moment, but to retroactively doubt it and be unsure, after everything blows up.

Oh, the fear of the unavoidable. No commitment or even talks about it, no admission of the attraction out loud, so nothing was there at all, right? No hard feelings then.

Oh, the fear of wanting something you shouldn't, even if it feels good.

Oh, the understanding that if you admit it, it will mean you were probably making a lot of mistakes before this moment. Oh the inevitability of it coming down like a plane falling from the sky, of maybe falling in love. Oh, wanting to just prolong the free fall, and sit on both chairs for as long as you can, because it's terrifying. All of it.

Oh, Daigo standing in front of the window opened into the chill night, and Ryuji saying "go to bed" to his back instead of coming up to him, or pulling him in, like he wanted. Oh, Daigo just laying down to sleep on his shoulder instead of kissing him, or even just touching his face.

Oh, the feeling of "well, next time-", of "well, tomorrow this may not hold off".

Oh, one day "tomorrow" not coming at all, because that's it. Time ran out.

Because one morning, a day after Ryuji contacted Takashima and some other people briefly, Ryuji wakes up to only his boys in the hideout. Because when they came, apparently, other Omi men took Daigo somewhere because of some plan that was approved from above.

– Daigo being re-kidnapped *dabs*

Majima's voice from the background: I did that! A classic. (with Haruka, according to RGGO) Ryuji: I didn't kidnap him the first time either >c

It was the only morning since Ryuji started his meds when Daigo woke up first. 

– But okay, okay it was some other, let's say (with a stretch) Ryuji's men. Who, upon bosses return, decided to win the favour by using Daigo as bait to lure Kiryu into a trap to capture or kill.

And, well, yes, they may have been directly encouraged by Takashima. It’s not like anyone can tell by this point though. The guy is real good at this game.

And that's the story of how Daigo gets taken to Tokyo in the trunk of a car, and stuffed in a room in the wrecked bathhouses. Kiryu saved him the same night, and Daigo was very tired and hungry, because he didn't even have breakfast. And then things happen very fast.

Perhaps, Ryuji scrambled back into the groove of things, and managed to cut the crazy idea of the guys actually trying to kill Kiryu or attempting anything else crazy. Because it's Ryuji's duty and destiny or whatever. Mhm.

But, being busy with all that, he couldn't get to the bathhouses before Kiryu. He could just give orders and scold people over the phone.

Majima family guys found out where Daigo was kept, right? And they found out because the bathhouses belong to Majima now. So maybe Daigo was relocated there from the actual trap location, specifically so he can be found and rescued faster.

Ryuji and Daigo did get each other's contacts before all that but they do not meet after this in private (the scene on the funeral is double-wild with this backstory: oh, Ryuji). But sometimes after the bomb threat on Kamurocho gets resolved, but before the fight on the rooftop, Daigo gets a phone call.

On the other end of the line, Ryuji is silent, because, in a super melodramatic fashion, he called just to hear Daigo's voice. Daigo realised it was him, though, because bitch, and said his mind. Something in the silence gave Ryuji away. Not speaking, letting the silence linger like an asshole in a really distinct way.

Daigo probably talked about some other place they could go to for a great view. That tower is unfinished anyway, just wind up there and ugly skeletons of construction.

Maybe, when Ryuji realised that Daigo was about to ask him to not go through with his plan, he hung up. After a long pause, just after the "please-". Because it was terrifying.

He already nearly slipped from his resolve not long ago. Gotta control this stuff. The things.

– Dang, this is such a raw relationship, coming from poking each other's most sore spots from the get go. And paradoxically finding comfort in that, because when you start from this kind of mess, there's nowhere to go but up.

All the parallels to each other's hang ups and traumas. It's rather uncomfortable, almost to the point of teenage rage, to know that you're not so unique.

the tower

And in the end it still went as it did – Ryuji went up on that tower to fight Kiryu and to die. To finish what he started, and to not back down, and for a million other things that seemed important and good enough. It felt like the only right thing to do by that point. And Daigo had to live with that. 

Well, Ryuji too, in the end.

Kaoru took Kiryu down, and while doing so, called for someone to go pick Ryuji's unconscious body and take him someplace safe. So even if Daigo came there afterwards (for Kiryu, of course. Yes, only for him) the top of the building was empty and off limits.

And there was no time to dwell on the past for Daigo after that, he had his hands full with Tojo on fire and the crazy cat on the loose. But it's all gonna come back around in a year or so. Ryuji’s gonna be crawling back to Kamurocho after his soul searching journey, and finding new ways to apply dumb suffering and existential crisis in his life. Prepare to see the story continue in y3 and for the bigass logs on ot3 for y4 (we went off on those).

their conflicts 

Thinking about how Daigo was gradually understanding Ryuji, but not fast enough to respect him fully without regards to his strength. About how only after Daigo decided he can never be enough for Ryuji (or Kiryu, but that's another story) and started to build his life and strength separately from that, Ryuji started to look at him with real respect too. It's a long process.

Ryuji going to explode on Majima's building with Kiryu was the point where Daigo decided that that's it. He's done.

And in Ryuji's head his two brain cells clash: one is hyper-focused on Kiryu, and the other is responsible for whatever it is that's slowly happening with Daigo – much more fragile and uncertain, and not comfortable for the fast and decisive man like Ryuji. And as much as we make fun of Ryuji having a crush on Kiryu, let's face it: Daigo being affiliated with Kiryu in a personal way doesn't help this mess at all.

It all boils down to the fact that Kiryu-stuff is the brighter and more existing fruit dangling in front of Ryuji. He gained his experiences in life, but he's still not very mature.

Kiryu is Ryuji's burning car.*

But he's off to Okinawa now. Sayonara, goodbye, good luck with the concussion.

– * There’s this anecdote, it goes something like this: “The bear was walking in the forest, and saw a car on fire. And he, well. He got into it and burned”.

I love it, “got into the burning car and died” is the perfect metaphor for all the absolutely unnecessary self-sacrificing our little blorbos like to do. And Yakuza is full of people getting in burning cars, it’s insane :’D

wrt the p5 vball au (!!!!!) i'm pretty sure yusuke is canonically Very Bad at the sports (see beach episode, his absolute terrible performance in beach vball) but he is so tall and lanky... so stronk... but i cannot see him being particularly "athletic" and coordinated in that way (part of that is just me projecting my lack of coordination on him lmao.) granted he does have high agility plus the "scoundrel eyes," in royal, but i just don't see him actually... having that sort of hand-eye to hit ball and not whiff. of the kosei boys though... knowing its artsy reputation, i don't know if anyone has that lmao... though also with him being that tall, maybe he gets saddled with middle? but also. 180cm is still, like, libero height for a lot of teams lol

they do make the joke that mako too stronk for the boys a lot (again, see beach episode) but i think she'd probably follow her combat abilities and be really well rounded in both offence and defence. haru is really nimble and bendy, and probably has a great swing (axe) but idk if she has the height/hops for the net. akechi and joker being the setters... makes so much sense oh dear it's almost upsetting. though imagine them on the same team.... akechi would probably also make a great opposite (lefty, good power) as would joker (literally perfect) and we know they're both fairly athletic, which makes me think... 6-2? maybe they hit... and set....? i think you made mishmash a libero which makes a lot of sense?. i hc him as being faster and better than ppl give him credit for, despite him being the lamest canonically. Middle blocker is totally viable for Yusuke too I think!! He's a tall guy, so he could definitely do stuff if he puts the work in. If this was based on canonverse then yeah I could see him whiffing the ball from time to time. I’m sure the hand/body coordination for handling a sword vs doing da sports ball is different lol. My reason for making him ace was so that he could be a temperamental but formidable ace, and place him as one of the key players for Kosei so that the Shujin team could have rivals to go up against ya know? I just think the idea of seeing Yusuke's murder eyes as he blasts a spike through a block is just. (chef's kiss) sublime shit. Also I see your point about making Akechi and Joker on the same team, but considering that it’s these two dudes we’re talking about I feel like we have to double down on their whole rival dynamic, it would be a crime not to imo (and this is coming from someone who hates shu/ake and Akechi lol). The setter mind games they could have with each other is too good — like if you have Akechi be his superficially genial and amiable self while Joker actively goes out of his way to antagonise him just to peel back that fake veneer of charm and throw him off his game??? Delish

😭 Mishima my beloved ... I think I mentioned this already but I really like the idea of him being a libero since it's a near 1:1 parallel to his role in canon (no spike, only support!!!!) I HC that his low-to-zero presence lowkey serves him well on court, in the sense that he's a solid defense player that quietly keeps chugging along and making sure the ball stays up while everyone else focuses on offense. He's a silly little NPC that keeps his head down and stays in his lane ... 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 Ofc sometimes the opposing team is going to target him to try and break through their defense, but once he gets into his zone it's hard to shake him off his groove imo. If you're telling me Mishima can hyperfixate this hard on his dumb little website then at least some of that focus is going to bleed into his vball game headspace (wow I didn’t go off on a shu/yuu tangent. it’s a miracle, let’s keep it that way)

describe their canon relationship/dynamic

Canonically they're best friends. It's not so prevalent in Persona 3 but definitely in Persona 4, there's a tradition of having the first human male character the Wild Card protag meets be their bestie and confidant. They're usually a bit of an outcast that could fit in with society/a friend group but for one reason or another, has lost their place in it. Whatever happens, they are "second banana". They're a bit of a jokester but not to the extent they and the protag are a manzai comedy duo (but they should be). At the end of the day, they will be there by the protag's side through thick and thin.

your ideal/headcanon version of it? how does it differ from how it is in canon & why is this your favorite version? any other alternate versions of it you enjoy?

I don't think my ideal version of it really differs that much from canon? They're just two dudes who happen to be dating to me. I guess in my head they get up to more wackier hijinks and Joker is willing to carry Ryuji around more.

what do you like about their relationship, why is it interesting or enjoyable to you?

I know I go on a lot about how LGBTQ+ relationships should be allowed to be messy and complicated, but that doesn't mean I can enjoy a simple, cute ship from time to time. And these two fit that niche for me. I mean they're still morally grey and do crimes and shit but compared to, say, Akeshu or even Ryugoro, they are homies that kiss and do crimes.

what about the individual characters involved? what does this relationship mean to them, what makes it unique among their relationships?

Ryuji was one of the first people that didn't immediately go ballistic at Joker for being arrested, which is the key to their relationship - platonic or otherwise. They're also in a similar position of wanting someone to stop lauding other others by abusing their power for personal benefit, but lacking the means to achieve it, so even if he doesn't outright state it, Ryuji is one of the first people Joker would go ride or die with. Also I think what's interesting is when Ryuji gets a bit drunk off of the popularity of the PT, Joker seems hesitant to tell Ryuji to calm down (at least afaik). Whether it's because he's scared of the consequences of deflating Ryuji's enthusiasm and putting a wrench in their friendship or because he trusts Ryuji will see eye to eye with him is juicy either way.

Joker is the catalyst for Ryuji's life changing and looking better. Like it's very clear he wants to do something about his situation but every time he tries something he goes about it the wrong way and it never works out for him. Also from Ryuji's confidant and after the Kamoshida incident, you can tell he's learned from the whole ordeal and while he is still a bit brash in his methods, he knows he can make a change as long as Joker is there for him in some capacity. This comes full circle when he risks his life to lower the lifeboat when Shido's Palace is collapsing because he built up confidence from all of his experiences - none of which would have come to be if Joker didn't give so much of himself to make all this happen to begin with. Also also I forget the line in question but when Ryuji is like "wherever I am with you is when I'm at home"... I am actually physically tearing up typing this aaaaaaaaaaa

Even if he takes his safety of being anonymous as a Phantom Thief for granted when shit hits the fan around Sae's Palace, never once does he take Joker for granted. He's just as angry when he learns about Joker's circumstances and is willing to do anything to make Shido pay.

I think I pretty much described it with the line that I don't properly remember due to my shit memory lmao. I'm also a fan of Joker and Ryuji's awakenings because they mirror each other in how helpless they both felt but were able to turn a dire situation around and protect each other.

GOD sorry. i am once again thinking about how tragic kiryu is as a character bc it's hurting my feelings. idek if I've made this post before but fuck it I'll make it again.

he just wanted to protect the ppl he loved. he just wanted to love and be loved and that's literally it his entire life and everyone who despised him did so because he was too good or because he hurt them by protecting himself.

he swore up to prove something to his foster father with his childhood best friend. when he got into hot water by chance and that same best friend tried to kill him to save him from torture, he accepted it blamelessly. and when he came back to save kiryu, he welcomed him, despite having pushed him away after the whole attempted murder thing. when that same bestie shot their patriarch to protect their other childhood friend (who they were both in love with), kiryu took the fall, went to jail for ten years, and accepted the title of patriarch killer. all to keep himself from having to figure out a world without nishiki, or to have to watch him suffer like that. and when he got outta jail there was no one (minus majima) to welcome him. suddenly the daughter (presumed niece) of his love shows up and he's got to seek yumi out. in the process he loses friends in shinji and reina, his father in kazama, his love in yumi, and, of course, nishiki. basically everyone in his life is dead and he's about to go to jail before date tells him he's gotta step up for haruka because she needs someone. no matter how badly he wants to tap out of life and go back to wasting away in prison, he's got a responsibility to yumi's daughter, now his.

so despite living one of the worst possible months of his life, he takes her in. he's traumatized, obviously. he moves away from kamurocho (idr if it's out of kamurocho or just further away from the center, but it's not the same spot) and tries to raise haruka somewhat normally. he doesn't want to get wrapped up in further tojo business. he's the ex-chairman and a legend, but he's got a daughter to raise and he's very aware of how simply being around him can endanger her. but if he doesn't help the tojo, a lot of people are gonna die. so he has to help. has to find daigo and get him out of his funk. legit i don't remember the plot of yk2 that haruka's kidnapped again despite his best efforts. he gets stabbed. he's almost blown up. ryuji (supposedly) does, as does... idk.. that racist cop? there's probably someone else. point is him moving a bit away wasn't enough and he needs to cut things off entirely.

so he decides to leave. he moves cross country to okinawa, leaving the tojo (and thus his son daigo) in majima's capable hands (one of the few friends he can trust to take care of himself). he starts an orphanage, a dream of his stemming from his own childhood as an orphan. he just wants to give back, to help these vulnerable children. and for a couple of years it's alright he adjusts to raising 8 children. he thought he was in danger by the local clan, but he smoothes that conflict out relatively easily. it's alright. things are peaceful here. and then the local patriarch is shot. and daigo. his son is in a coma. and people are trying to take the land his orphanage rests on. so he's got to go back to protect his new life. he reconnects with majima and date and the others, and it's so tempting to stay, to be with them. but the orphanage is destroyed. rikiya is killed. it's been a couple years since someone's died in his arms and you can just feel that "oh god not again" feeling in that scene. daigo wakes up just in time to watch his boyfriend most trusted friend due by suicide for their sakes as redemption for almost killing him. after declaring his love for him of course. kiryu is stabbed, but recovers back in his rebuilt home. it is a little emptier, but mostly still intact.

i also legit forget 4's plot but like. a stranger washes up on his shore in a position kiryu was once in. he has to help him. and he just so happens to be majima's sworn brother. so he helps him back. then due to reasons i do not remember he's back in kamurocho and immediately finds out majima's getting arrested. it's daigo's doing and he has to beat him up about it. yasuko dies. idk it's a mess. he gains new allies but he is once again dragged back in. knowing this series he probably has another fakeout death idk

so, he's had enough. haruka wants to pursue her dream, and he's told outright that he can't be in the picture if she's to succeed. so he leaves. he moves far away to work on his own and provide for the orphanage from afar (unsuccessfully sneakily). he adopts a fake name. he drives a taxi. it's okay. he has a framed photo of the orphanage that he keeps facedown on its table. he's fine. daigo hops into his taxi one night. he did not want to be found. he can't do this again. he gives clipped advice. daigo disappears and kiryu is sought out to explain it. and suddenly he's back in it. again. and for the first time in the series he says outright that he cannot escape being yakuza. it's a part of him, and it will follow him forever. he's trapped. no matter what he does, sooner or later, he's going to get dragged (kicking and screaming) into a new conflict. he will be hurt and scared, and he will watch people die. people he could have saved, and failed to. the only thing he can do is run away from it all as fast as possible, because then, at least, the people he loves might be outside of the splash zone. and then majima dies. kiryu wasn't even in the same part of the coutnry as him, but he could have been... and now he has to investigate. and then he gets tied into a plot involving his daughter. they're trying to kill her this time. he cannot support her, even though she's come so far. she is so strong, and so like her mother. he can't even go near her, but he has to protect her, no matter the cost. and he fights. he fights incredibly hard and he's injured. his daughter finds him, having sacrificed her career and endured public scandal to reunite with him, because she doesn't think it's right to abandon her father for her career. he is bleeding out, and has nearly frozen to death. he doesn't believe she's real. he's hospitalized.

he doesn't even get to see some of his visitors before he's hauled off to jail. it's another few years. he can handle it. he waits, and he waits, entrusting the orphanage to haruka. her career is ruined, in a way, because of him. in the way mirei told him it would when she found haruka, when he agreed to leave. eventually, haruka stops visiting. just like the others when he was in for a decade. it's probably nothing. it's nothing. at the very least, he can't do anything about it now. and he finally returns to his children after three years in jail and months before that in fukuoka. and haruka's missing. she hasn't been there in years. so, immediately, he has to leave to find her, and bring her home. what's the point of sacrificing everything for family if you can't be together? so he does a bit of digging and it turns out she's in a coma. she was hit by a car. and she has a baby. she is around 19. kiryu is now a grandfather. no one knows who hit haruka, why (if there is a reason), or who the father is. child services doesn't recognize him, and is going to take the baby away, his baby's baby. so he kidnaps haruto. he starts seeking out answers. suddenly people are after the baby. of course they're after the baby. god, he's so tired. he gains a few more ducklings to chase after him and call him aniki. this hasn't gone well the past few times. one of them is haruto's father, unbeknownst to anyone but their patriarch. kiryu punches him through a glass door for being irresponsible. he goes on this big fucking thing to help everyone out yadda yadda. the patriarch dies. haruka wakes up and he and haruka, haruto, and yuta reunite. yuta promises to take care of her. he scolds her for leaving, even though it's a classic kiryu move. and it's here that he sits down and pens a letter to daigo. his will. it is here that he decided to die or fake his death, and leave it all behind. to cut himself out of their lives and their love completely, so that haruto, at the very least, could grow up in peace, with the loving family he deserved. no violence, two parents. a dream he could not provide haruka, or daigo, or any of the morning glory kids. they'll be okay now. he does not ask if he'll be okay. it doesn't matter anymore. he pens a letter to daigo admitting he feels as though he is daigo's father, and that he is a shitty one. he gives him one last piece of guidance before he disappears. it's a confession. (unbeknownst to kiryu, daigo reads this letter. he begins to refer to kiryu as his father directly. kiryu will never know his feelings are reciprocated by his son. he will never know the fondness the letter inspires in saejima and majima, two of his closest friends). he watches someya die for nothing, then another friend (the mama?? idr her name) die (he doesn't know she survives). he is tortured. he's getting too old for this. he fights, and it's bloody and desperate. it doesn't really matter if he dies anymore, because he'll be as good as dead soon anyway. he "dies" in his daughter's arms. he negotiates the faking of his death. and he returns to morning glory one last time to see haruto begin to walk. they don't need him anymore. it may be hard, but they are beginning to walk on their own. he's got to trust that they'll figure it out, eventually.

and that is the last time he lets himself see any of them. he's gone.

idk what his role in y7 is because i haven't gotten that far, but ik he's there. the trailer for y8 has him (w his kpop hair jdhsj) so it's not like he's disappearing completely. but at the very least during the kiryu saga that's it for him. that's the end of his story. god.

kiryu, a character defined by his love for and loyalty to others, is torn between protecting his two families, and someone always, always slips between his fingers. he is such a deeply passionate and warm and thoughtful perosn. literally all he does is try to help people dude. but because he's too fucking good at helping people everyone's in danger all the time. he is constantly torn between protecting the people he loves and the greater good, and he distances himself further and further from his loved ones because he just can't stop pulling them into hurricane kiryu. so he tries to separate himself from the love that's kept him going to the point of abandoning them completely just to protect them. in the fight between love and duty, love lost. he decided he wasn't able to protect them, and he left.

idk man.. i just think it's sad. he tried so hard and he definitely fucked up but so mucb of what happened was not his fault, not really. but does it matter when people's lives are at stake?

they're better off without him, anyway.

(p.s. i think this is part of what makes kiryu and majima such interesting foils when it comes to this kind of sacrifice. with makoto, majima quickly decided that she was far safer without him, and cut her out of his life. his entire adoption of the mad dog persona, to some extent, could be him keeping others distant for fear of entangling them in violence again. kiryu, on the other hand, tried desperately over and over again to protect people and failed until he finally came to the conclusion that majima did, that people like him are dangerous. that the noble thing to do is to avoid company out of love, to sacrifice your own happiness for others. to view that companionship as selfish. majima resigned to the fate kiryu fought for decades, and lost to. and once saejima's out of prison, majima slips right back beside him. and he cares for daigo, as promised. and he cares for kiryu. he's becoming closer to the people around him as kiryu's drifting away. (y3 is really where they intersect most in this, which is also why it's the most gay kazumaji-wise). god they just really won't let themselves be happy or love people even though they're such naturally caring people. what the hell. and part of why they don't quite distance themselves from each other is because they're both super duper strong. there's a safety there that numbs their protective instincts bc they're true peers. gah anyways love them)

Ringu

I’m gonna be honest, I’m not the best with horror movies but I’ll try my best for this class. For our first horror movie, I found Ringu to be actually pretty interesting as it was more about psychics and how people were being treated, rather than jumpscares and the American-style horror movies that I am more used to from seeing them in trailers and such. The introduction was interesting, but also iconic in setting the scene for the movie. It was interesting to see the camera movement as well as how they created a mysterious aura with the sounds as well as lighting. On a side note, I always found it interesting how they shoot horror movies, as the shoot itself isn’t scary, but with the magic of editing it creates the movies that we all know. Ringu ends the introduction with the second girl dying with her soul leaving her body, coming towards the camera. I thought the whole scene was pretty cool itself too, I could tell what was happening even without my prior knowledge of the movie, but even knowing what was going to happen doesn’t take away from the eerie feeling that it gives you. The girl who dies is revealed to be the niece of the main character, Reiko, who is a journalist trying to find a new scoop for her news company. Another thing that I found interesting was how bright the movie presented itself at times, like I said before I’m not used to a lot of horror movies, but I know for some horror movies they present themselves in literally a dark light so that they can use that for their scare factor. But going back to the movie, Reiko interviews some schoolgirls who know of an urban myth that if you watch a tape, you have a week to get rid of the curse or you just die. Reiko, while investigating this urban myth, goes to the source where she unknowingly watches the actual tape and gets herself cursed. She immediately calls her ex-husband where they work together to try to lift the curse. While watching this movie, I thought that Reiko’s son, Yuichi, was eerie as well, because of how mature he acted and how nonchalant he was at times. Going back to the story though, Reiko and Ryuji go on a mission to try to lift the curse. The backstory behind how the curse started was pretty interesting, and the shots of the curse on the tape were also pretty interesting, I’m not sure if that was the start of analog horror but that was what I attributed it to. Anyways, Reiko and Ryuji finally believe that they lift the curse, but instead Reiko accidentally finds out that Ryuji was the one that had it all along, in which he dies. So at the end of the movie, Reiko drives out to find someone else to give the curse to so that her son doesn’t die. Personally, I wasn’t satisfied that Ryuji died, but I know that since that’s what the schoolgirls said in the beginning, as well as Sadako being all powerful, that 's just how it is.

The moment the words came out of the brunet, Akira flinched. Morgana, his ever present shadow, had boldly claimed that he didn’t trust the boy that they’d all but adopted. So now that they were trapped in a car with a very suspicious and sleep deprived cat shaped Shadow, those words were little more than a trigger for him.

No sooner than Sora had closed his mouth did Morgana start, singing some god awful song that Ryuji had shown him. The only blessing was that he wasn’t sure if the other boy had been to Mementos, and for all he knew all he would be able to hear is the raucous meowing and yowling that people tended to hear when Morgana went on a spiel.

“ We’re going on a trip, in our favorite piece of shit, going 95 ~! We’re gonna die...! “

“ Now we get to listen to this for a few hours... “ His voice was a mumble, too busy keeping the gifted van on the road. Makoto had gifted the thing to him when she purchased a newer car, mentioning that since their leader had his license now, it would be poetic justice if the one who always drove the Mona Car was driving it’s real world counterpart.

Were it a normal car, he might have been able to find the cat and throttle him, but the Shadow liked to sit in the overhead bed, and there was no way he could get to him from here.

Maybe someone would take mercy on them, and have his partner in crime fall off the bunk. That might stop the noise long enough for him to catch the feline.
