Question 1: Can we hire a convertible for the whole route?

Question 4: Do I need a credit card whilst on holiday?
Yes, the lead driver of your car rental must have a valid credit card. This card reserves an amount that will be released to the cardholder once the car has been returned. Most hotels in America will also require a credit card at the time of check-in. As in car rental, they reserve an amount (possibly higher than if you had paid by cash) on your card to safeguard additional services, including room service, spa treatments or damages.
Question 5: Will I need to pay for any extras with my car rental?
A standard car rental package includes insurance, unlimited mileage, collision damage waiver, and more. Extras such as additional drivers, fuel and tolls, can also be pre-booked. The vehicle type and the route you decide upon determining your one-way drop-off fee, which is automatically charged as you return the car to the rental location. Some companies arrange a Route 66 trip between Chicago O'Hare Airport and Los Angeles Airport without charging any fees for any one-way drop-off. Anthony’s Stupid Daily Blog (405): Wed 26th Apr 2023
Since it looks like the mechanic from the bike shop is never turning up (and may in fact might just be an imaginary person that I’ve dreamt up) I decided to shop around and contact someone else. I phoned a garage that’s only round the corner from me and told him my situation. I hadn’t even finished speaking when this miserable bastard said “Right, I don’t do any work off site and I don’t deal with any bikes of the Chinese persuasion”. He then said that I suggest I call a friend of his and then he immediately read out a phone number. So not only is he lazy for not doing call-outs, not only is he racist for not servicing Chinese bikes but he assumes that anyone and everyone who calls him with a pen and paper standing by. I thought about going onto the review sites and posting a sarcastic review saying that the guy I spoke to was really cheery, happy, friendly, didn’t talk over me before I’d even finished speaking. The kind of person I imagine would hold a door open for an old lady, as long as it was the door to a gas chamber.
I spent the evening uploading photos from me completing items on my bucket list to my Instagram stories. It’s really breathtaking just how many amazing things I’ve done in such a relatively short space of time. Of the items on my list I’ve…(Yes it has been an uneventful day and I am going to take the easy way out of writing an interesting blog by writing a long list of things instead. It’s my blog fuck you, I do what I like)…had hypnotherapy and regular therapy, got pierced nipples, went skydiving, donated money to charity, went to an LA Lakers game, went to Portmeirion, went to Pompeii, went to Monday Night Raw, tried a Man Vs Food challenge, went to New York, took Nana to Graceland, watched and reviewed 365 films in a year, bungee jumped, went to California, went to the Twin Peaks festival, saw Jim Morrison’s grave, saw Buster Keaton’s grave, went on holiday with friends, gotten high, went to WrestleMania, went to Route 66, went to the Edinburgh Fringe, gotten multiple tattoos, had a massage, rose a jetski, passed my driving test and been in an isolation tank (and that’s not to mention the dozens of great gigs I’ve been to). Yes reader you’re right your life does suck compared to mine.

Blog 9 – January in Andalusia and Portugal
We left Jerez on the Three Kings public holiday and travelled down to Bolonia – close to Tarifa. We chose Bolonia primarily because we had a week to kill, as we had to return to Jerez on the 12th to have some work done to Toa, Toa, Toa but also because several friends recommended that we visited the village. Boy, were we glad we did – what an amazing place. Stunning coastal scenery, at night the light from Tangiers makes the horizon glow, the most amazingly well-kept remains of a Roman town (Baelo Claudia) that you’ll find on the Iberian Peninsula and a fantastic museum.
In total we spent 4 nights parked up in Bolonia overlooking the beach, just chilling. This included completing a jigsaw that Nancy (Vickie’s grandmother had loaned us). It’s probably 40 odd years since we last did a jigsaw but it was fun, despite the fact that it was fiendishly difficult and took us about 8 hours to complete. On one of the days that we were parked up at Bolonia, a young kite surfing couple, who happened to have a beautiful brown and white border collie (Lunar), parked alongside us – so we reached an agreement they could kite surf all day without worrying about Lunar and we’d have Lunar for the day. We loved walking Lunar on the beach – it bought back so many memories of our beautiful Toa.
After leaving Bolonia, we drove to El Puerto de Santa Maria, where we spent 24 hours doing domestic chores and buying the obligatory flagon of fino from the local bodega before we returned to Jerez, spending the night wild camping close to the motorhome repair shop.
On arrival at the repair shop the next day, we were advised that they wouldn’t undertake the work – which was bloody annoying. We had decided after Jerez that we would drive just beyond Sevilla, so had plumped for a village called Umbrete about 15 kms west of Sevilla.
We selected Umbrete randomly, and mainly because it had a free council run aire, which was beside an incredibly impressive sports village. Umbrete itself is a village/town with a population of just under 6,000 but it was where the Bishop of Sevilla chose to spend his summers, so contained a Bishops Palace and a most beautiful church in the main square. We spent two nights in Umbrete exploring the village/town, running, riding bikes and enjoying the warm sunshine during the day. However, during the night boy was it cold.
We left Umbrete on the Saturday morning, travelling the short distance to Sanlucar la Mayor where we intended to spend the night, After parking up and a whistle stop tour of the town (which was a little underwhelming) we decided to travel further west towards Ayamonte on the Spanish Portuguese border.
Driving out of Sanlucar we passed the world’s first solar power station, which was a sight to behold with sunlight being directed onto a tower by thousands of mirrors. We drove onto the Isla Canela, just outside of the town of Ayamonte, which overlooks Portugal.
We spent two nights on the Isla Canela running, walking and sitting on the beach watching the surf clam fishermen up to their waist in water collecting surf clams (that’s why they’re so expensive).
We then moved onto Portugal, crossing the road bridge which spans the Rio Guadiana and finding out that we moved time zone, because Portugal is on GMT. We couldn’t get on the Aire in Vila Real de San Antonio, so after a quick look around the town, we drove a few miles down the coast to Monto Gordo.
In Monto Gordo, we wild camped on what looked like the last development opportunity on the seafront. We enjoyed Monto Gordo spending two nights in the town, walking to the most south-easterly point in mainland Portugal (the end of the breakwater at the end of the Rio Guadiana.
We then moved further west towards Tavira but again the Aire in the town was full so we decided to try our luck on one of two campsites in the village of Moncarapacho. Camping Route 66 was great fun a shambling small holding where you could pitch up anywhere but needed to be aware of the livestock who also had the freedom to roam – we woke up the following morning to find a pig asleep beside Toa, Toa, Toa. We spent two nights at Moncarapacho.
Whilst there we walked around the lovely village of Fuseta and part of the Rio Formosa Park, seeing amongst all manner of bird life - storks, flamingo’s and a marsh harrier.
We then moved onto to Olhao – our favourite town on the Algarve. We spent 10 days in Olhao, mainly because my sister Sue and brother-in-law Paul had booked into the Real Marina Hotel in the town for a weeks’ holiday. The night before Sue & Paul’s arrival we joined about 60 or so other motorhomes parked up on a piece of land behind the hotel and we nabbed a spot in the front rank (that’s a prime spot) amongst a group of French motorhome owners. The next morning, we woke up to find that one of our front tyres was flat – so after putting on the spare and driving to a tyre garage we discovered that someone had kindly deflated our tyre for us. We thought that there were two potential culprits – either someone in the group of French motorhome owners who didn’t like the fact that we’d possibly hi-jacked the spot which may have been reserved for one of their number or the guy who came round on the Sunday evening trying to sell us what were clearly knocked off strawberries. We’ll never know.
During the 10 days we spent in Olhao we visited the Ilsa Culatra (twice), the Ilsa Tavira, Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo (to visit the site of Paul’s parents’ former family home and inspect the land that they still own). We also got to help Paul celebrate a landmark birthday. We had a lovely time with Sue & Paul, chatting, eating, drinking and playing cards – as Sue reminded me that was the most time we’d spent together since I was about 13, when Sue left home to get married. Sue and Paul kindly bought us a night in the Real Marina Hotel, as a wedding present which was lovely and we enjoyed our final night together with them before they returned to winter in the UK the following day.
After Sue and Paul left us, we returned to Moncarapacho to try out the other campsite (Camping Lagao). It was another fun and quirky campsite which we’ll definitely return to later in the year. Whilst we were camped in Camping Lagao we walked up to the top of Sao Miguel (the highest point on the eastern Algarve it’s just under 500m) but it gave stunning views back into Spain and right along the Algarve. A lovely walk.
The next day we returned to Spain.

By the time Will Coffey stepped off the plane in Dallas, all he wanted was a nice long shower and to sleep in his own bed for once. Being a travel journalist for a leading travel magazine had its perks– a month-long trip across Mexico, for example, all expenses paid or at least reimbursed – but after a month on the road he was dead tired and ready to be home.
Is this supposed to be me? Why am I living in Dallas?
Yes, and also, you don’t actually live in Dallas, Eliot, you live here, in Portland, with us.

The other thing about being on the road for a living was that sometimes it felt kinda lonely, and as relieved as he was to be home, the first couple of minutes after he walked in, turned on the lights, and looked around at an empty place, that was always a little bittersweet. But the only other person he’d really seen in any kind of serious capacity the whole time he’d had this gig was a fellow traveler who spent just as much time on the road as he did, so it just kinda was what it was. He set his keys and his bag down and headed to the kitchen for a beer, but he hadn’t even opened his fridge when his phone buzzed a couple times. It was a text from Sarah, his editor. He’d known her forever– they shared a couple classes in college. Now they shared the stress of managing a print publication in an increasingly digital world.
“Did you see this?” she had written. There was a link in the next message. “How does this guy get this stuff up so fast?“
Will already knew what he was gonna find before he clicked the link, and sure enough, it directed him to a popular travel blog called The Travel Geek, which was a ridiculous name for a travel blog but people absolutely went wild for it. Will liked it too, not that he would ever really admit it, but that probably had more to do with the guy who ran it than anything else. They had…not a thing, exactly? It was hard to explain whatever was going on with Jeremy Edwards, who by rights Will should probably hate for stealing his stories and his audience. But the problem with that was mainly that the guy was so goddamn likeable.

Will had met Jeremy a couple of years ago, right when he was just starting out with his blog. Jeremy said he’d been reading Will’s stuff for a while and would love some advice from a pro. It wasn’t like Will didn’t know it was a little bit of flattery, and it wasn’t like he didn’t know it was a little bit of flirting, either. It also wasn’t like Jeremy was bad to look at. So Will said sure, he’d be glad to, and they were in Belgium, so they shared some beers, ate fries from a baraque at one in the morning on a park bench, shoulders pressed together, while Will tipsily rhapsodized about gaufre de Liège while Jeremy laughed and laughed.
I have never *rhapsodized* about anything in my damn life.
Have you heard you talk about food? This is not a criticism. I could listen to that all day.
Nothing really happened, in the end, just a good conversation and the promise to keep in touch. That turned out to be easier than it should have been, because they started covering the same damn things, all the time. One big world, and somehow they were always sharing part of it: Will was in India on a camel safari through the Thar Desert, and Jeremy was there, keeping Will up at night tappity tapping on his keyboard. Or Will was in Oatman, Arizona, for a piece on Route 66, and there was Jeremy, taking selfies with the wild burros roaming the streets of the town. Or Will was traveling around Japan, doing a feature on onsens, and Jeremy was there, too, acting like he wasn’t looking in Will’s direction while they sat, very naked, in the soothing hot water. It went on like that for a while until finally one night in Barcelona, in front of Sagrada Familia, he looked at Jeremy, tall and handsome in this absurd brightly patterned scarf, and said, “This is ridiculous, man,” and pulled him in for a long, lingering kiss.

I’ll take your word for it.
It wasn’t a relationship, exactly. It was just something they did, sometimes, if they happened to run into each other on the road. It wasn’t like he was getting invited home for the holidays, or anything, and he was fine with that, really. The long and short of it was, they’d basically been circling each other for years now, professionally, personally, whatever, but the professional stuff was definitely getting in the way of anything else. Because Will would sit down and write out his long, detailed articles with carefully selected photographs that would look just right on the page, while Jeremy had already turned out quick blog entry after quick blog entry, listing off places people should visit with witty little one sentence summaries, and people just ate it right up with a spoon while Adventure., Will’s magazine, slowly saw its sales circling the drain. It stung a little. Maybe more than a little. It wasn’t like he could say the guy wasn’t working hard, but damn. Hell, the best selling issue they’d had in a couple years was the one where Sarah had masterminded a collaboration between Will and Jeremy. Blogging was definitely here to stay.
That night in Belgium was five years ago, and at the time it seemed impossible that the internet would ever really fully overtake print. But bloggers and phones had both gotten smarter over the last five years, and now everyone wanted their news in little chunks that they could read on a screen during their commute, so travel blogs were the hot new thing. Will grimaced as he looked at the blog entries Jeremy already had up from Mexico, where they’d run into each other at least half a dozen times.

“You gotta be kidding me with this,” he muttered, staring at his phone and thinking about the half-written article he had saved on his laptop detailing the history of agave and how to experience Jalisco as more than just the birthplace of tequila.
He pulled up Sarah’s number and dialed.
“I don’t know how we can compete with this,” he sighed, when she picked up.
“We’re going to have to adapt,” she said. “You know that. I can hear you making a face."
"I don’t want to blog,” he complained. “I like print."
"I know,” she sighed. “I’m working on it. Anyway, I’m glad you called, I was going to call you. I need you to go to Italy. Flight leaves tomorrow."
"No way. Not interested,” he told her. “I just got back to my apartment, Sarah, I’ve been in Mexico for a month. I’m beat."
"It’s not my fault that you spend half your time on extracurricular activities,” she teased.
“You can just say sex,” he said. “I won’t be offended. And it’s not half my time. Like, maybe twenty-five percent. Anyway, I get the job done."
"Yeah, and you’re very good at it, which is why I need you to go to Italy,” she said.
“I’m not saying yes,” he told her, “and I’m not interested. But what’s in Italy that’s so important for me to get to?"
"You’ll love this one,” Sarah promised. “It’s a food festival."
Okay, maybe he was a little interested. "Oh?”
“Yeah,” she said. His phone buzzed in his ear. “I just emailed you the details. Including your flight info."
"Dammit, Sarah–"
"Oops, emergency, the printer’s on fire, gotta go!” she chirped, and the line disconnected.

“Dammit,” Will said again, and opened Sarah’s email to read up on his next destination.

The food festival turned out to be a week long international celebration of local food from around the world. It only happened once every few years in October, when a world of people descended on the city of Torino, and more specifically the park by the River Po, where they set up tents and stands and served pretty much every kind of food you could imagine, and Will loved food and could imagine a lot, so that was saying something. It was pretty cool, seeing all these people from all over the planet showing off food that was important to them, sharing it with strangers. It really was the whole planet, too, the way the park was set up you could walk through a continent at a time, with all the countries on it represented at their own space. He figured he’d pay his respects to the hosts first and start with Italy, which was definitely the largest section. Halfway through the displays he found a stall with some folks from Campania selling fresh mozzarella di bufala the size of his fist for a Euro. It was speared on a stick like a candy apple so he could walk around with it, nibbling on the sweet cheese as he checked out the festival’s other offerings. Aged cheeses covered in mud and straw from a little town in France. A swanky tent with wood plank floors where the Filipino agriculture offices had a set up with big displays dedicated to traditional food and heirloom crops. Six different kinds of wild rice were layered in a glass display bottle in the booth dedicated to Indigenous agriculture in North America. There were folks from the Yucatan peninsula displaying cured meats and wild honey. There was a whole series of displays about preserving, protecting, and raising Maasai red sheep, from Kenya. The whole event was really impressive, actually, and even though his body had no idea what time zone he was in, he didn’t feel too tired– although that might have been more because he’d been downing every cup of coffee from anyone selling it.
Okay, this actually sounds pretty cool. But now you gotta fake a whole food festival like this if we ever use these aliases.
I don’t have to. That’s a real thing. Happens every couple of years. I was gonna ask if you wanted to go to the next one. Parker can probably find us a job after, anyway.

Will strolled around the park, snapping photos here and there, jotting down notes. He talked to folks from all over who came here to run their country’s booths, locals who had come out to enjoy the day, and people who had traveled long distances to be there. After a couple of hours and a really good lunch, he found an unoccupied bench near the river and posted up there for a while, notebook open next to him as he flipped through photos on his phone, the story he could tell about this event already starting to take shape in his head, and he had to admit, at least to himself, that Sarah had been right about this one. Nobody else on their staff knew food enough to get this right. But even though he had a good idea where to start, he couldn’t help feeling a little overwhelmed, too. You could spend two weeks here and still not talk to everybody, and it seemed important to try, somehow.
“Well, well, well,” said a voice, and Will looked up from his phone and his notes to see the tall form of none other than Jeremy Edwards.
“Dammit, Edwards,” Will swore. “You’ve gotta be kidding me. Again?"

"Looks like it,” Jeremy said. He took a seat next to Will on the bench, despite the fact that Will had absolutely not fucking offered it to him. He grinned. Will looked back at his notes before he smiled back. “We’ve really gotta stop meeting like this."
"Yeah, well, trust me, I’m working on it,” Will grumbled, and risked a look at Jeremy again. Still handsome, and still smiling, unfortunately. He thought about the blog a little and made himself frown. “So, you’re here to blog about this, huh? How many blog posts have you done already?"
"None so far,” Jeremy said, scratching his chin, “but I am working on one right now. Tentative title, How to Tell The Guy You’re Casually Seeing And Have Been Chasing All Over the Globe That His Boss Sent Me Here To Work With Him."
Well, there was a lot of information there, but Will decided maybe sticking with the professional stuff was better for now. "I’m sorry, you’re here for what?"
Jeremy shrugged. "Sarah really liked that collaboration thing she got us to do last year, I guess, wanted to try it again for this. I said yes. It’s good for your magazine and it gives my blog some credibility with all you snooty print folks."
"We’re not snooty,” Will said, although that wasn’t exactly true. Maybe they were, a little. He unlocked his phone and saw the email from Sarah, the subject line of which read: “DON’T ARGUE IT WILL BE GOOD FOR YOU/US/THE MAGAZINE.” He sighed and looked back at Jeremy. “I can’t believe she sent you to a food thing."
"I’m offended,” Jeremy said, although it didn’t much sound like it. “I know food."
"Oh really? So last year when we were in Beijing and you were looking for a McDonald’s that was just you knowing food, huh,” Will drawled.
“Sometimes you just really want a Happy Meal,” Jeremy joked, and Will just shook his head.
“I guess we should figure out what we’re doing, then,” he said, and Jeremy raised his eyebrows.
“About the story,” he said, “right?"
"Yeah, about the story,” Will grumbled.
“Whatever you say,” Jeremy said affably, just like always.

It was actually pretty easy to figure out how to cover the festival now that he had a partner in crime. They worked out a plan that afternoon, sketched out a couple of pieces, a collab for Adventure., a short guest piece for Will on The Travel Geek, and a short story in the magazine for Jeremy. Sarah signed off on everything from afar– “What time is it where she is? Does that woman ever sleep?” Jeremy asked, as they both got email after email. “I don’t think she does, man,” Will laughed– and they got to work pretty quick. There was plenty to do and they were both here for a few days, so they wandered through the park as they worked, stopping occasionally to sample food or take photos. Eventually they walked all the way out of the park and into the city, up to a big plaza, Piazza Castello, in the center of the historic part of town. They got gelato from one of the many carts set up nearby for the festival, and sat outside, eating and talking as the sun set.
It was nice. It was always nice, when they ran into each other. That wasn’t the problem. But they’d been stuck in the same routine for years now: they’d find themselves in the same place, Jeremy would laugh, Will would pretend he was annoyed, and then they’d spend a good chunk of their time together enjoying each other’s company in as many ways as they could find, and then they’d head to the airport and go their separate ways. And that was that. This shouldn’t be any different, but somehow it was. Maybe it was the sunset lighting up Jeremy’s skin, or maybe he’d just been lonely too long, but maybe they needed to figure out what they were doing with more than just the stories they were here to tell.
“You wanna get dinner?” Will said, before he could talk himself out of it.
“Yeah,” Jeremy said, smiling again, and this time Will let himself smile back. Just a little.
They asked around for recommendations and ended up at a little restaurant in the city, a few blocks from the Piazza. They split a bottle of wine, a margherita pizza, and some perfectly fried fish, and they didn’t really talk about work at all.
“You know,” Jeremy said, about halfway through the wine, “not for nothing, but I’ve gotta say, this looks and feels a lot like a date."
"I wasn’t under the impression that you’d be opposed to that,” Will said.
“Oh, I’m not opposed,” Jeremy told him, “I’m just a little surprised you’re asking. I figured at this point it was gonna have to be me who said something."
Will eyed him carefully, thought back to a lot of nights on a lot of trips. "How long exactly have you been waiting around?"
"I mean, don’t get the wrong idea, here, I haven’t been pining away for you like some Victorian in a bad novel,” Jeremy said, and Will snorted. “But yeah. I played a long game, man. I gotta say, though, after that fishing boat incident in Guyana I really thought you figured out we had a thing."
"Yeah, well, I didn’t have time to notice, I was too busy taking pictures of you hiding behind that skinny British guy when that big old fish jumped out of the water,” Will snickered.
“Big old– that thing was two-hundred and thirty-four pounds of ichthyological torpedo headed straight for yours truly,” Jeremy said, and Will chuckled. “Big doesn’t really describe it.”
“Hmm. It was kinda wild he thought we were gonna get in the water with it,” Will mused. He winked. “Glad you finally remembered you owed me dinner for keeping him from pushing us into the river."
"Ha. You know Sarah wants us to work with that guy again, right?"
"Aw, hell,” Will said. “Really?"
"Yeah,” Jeremy confirmed. “She said she was gonna talk to you about it when we got back from this. Canada this time, so when Mister Fisherman tries to throw me in the water at least the hypothermia will probably get me before the monster fish does."
"Nah,” Will said. “Don’t worry about that. Nobody throws you off a fishing boat. Except maybe me. No. Well. Maybe. No,” he concluded.
Hah. I mean, okay, that does sound like me.
Oh, I am aware, trust me.
“Sarah maybe also mentioned we might do a few more of these little…collaborative things,” Jeremy said, drawing invisible circles on the table. “Maybe even in a more formal capacity."
Will raised his eyebrows. "No way she talked you into giving up the blog."
"Oh, definitely not,” Jeremy said. “But funnily enough, people keep sending me emails about wanting a print version of some of my photographs? But I don’t really have the publishing connections. A magazine, though…” he shrugged. “Me and Sarah figured we might come to some kind of mutually beneficial arrangement, somehow. Might be seeing more of you, is what I’m trying to say."
"Can’t say I mind that,” Will said, and reached out across the table to cover Jeremy’s hand with his.
“I was hoping you’d say that,” Jeremy answered, and this time Will didn’t try to hide his smile.

Prepare For Landing
When COVID hit, the US economy was dealt a one-two punch that took the air out of whatever growth trajectory we had been on. Stocks plunged thousands of points on the NYSE. Hotels were ghost towns; restaurants had to figure out to pivot or die. And international tourism ground to a complete halt.
But that was then, and as of yesterday, international travelers can now visit the US, as long as they are fully vaccinated and can produce a negative COVID test from the 72 hours prior to travel.
Collectively, retailers are heaving a huge sigh of relief, because they have missed all of those foreign dollars. Yes, Americans figured out how to travel in 2020 with relative safety, and 2021 was a banner year for domestic tourism, but thus far all of the economic recovery has been fueled by our own dollars. Now we can start putting theirs in the till as well.
How big is international tourism? Global visitors accounted for 27% of all travel and tourism spending in 2019, the last good benchmark year. That’s $43.4 billion in shopping. Fasten your seat belt, return your seat back tray to its full and upright position, and prepare for spending.
I mean landing.
It is no secret that the US is a major shopping destination. I have served as tour guide with three different groups of Chinese travelers, and the highlight of their trip was not seeing Route 66, but rather the planned shopping day in Chicago or LA. Sure, they had fun getting their kicks on 66, but what they really wanted to do was spend money. Turns out that a lot of the best stuff that China manufactures is exported, so those travelers were simply taking home their own country’s outputs.
And as much as we love to complain about a little inflation, prices in the US are pretty cheap compared to other nations. Our outlet malls attract shoppers like moths to a flame. It is normal for overseas tourists going to the luggage store first, where they purchase the large suitcase they will use to pack all of the rest of the things they buy that day.
Once you add in all the other travel expenses from the three pillars of tourism--gas, food, and lodging--plus rental car and air travel, you discover that each international traveler is spending $10,000 or more. The longer they stay, the more they spend.
International travelers love America, in spite of its warts and blemishes. A little more than a decade ago, a study by a research group at Rutgers University studied Route 66 travelers. Their survey results indicated 15% of the estimated 200,000 annual travelers taking the trek from Chicago to LA, were of international origin. I know retailers up and down 66 who say their revenues are more like 40% international.
Americans took to the road in a big way in 2021, with many people just tired of being locked down. One retailer I know in Tucumcari New Mexico--Garth Engman at Teepee Curios--reported a banner year in spite of his international guests absent. I have a feature story on him and his shop coming out in the December issue of ROUTE Magazine.
It’s going to take a while for international travel to return to its pre-COVID levels. For one, we are going into winter, which is not exactly peak travel time. Europeans, with their six-week holiday allotments, typically travel in late summer. And Route 66 travel is typically April through October. A lot of the shops shut down completely during the soft season, including some of the vintage motels.
But they will come, and we will welcome them with open arms. I for one have many international friends chomping at the bit to return for one more drive down the Mother Road, and we will raise toasts together next summer in Amarillo.

fic commentary meme and my answers
i am WEAK for an indulgent callback and this ending is the most indulgent and callbacky thing i’ve ever done. i really hoped it would give the chapter a sense of closure and finality -- or at least that’s the excuse i gave myself to go absolutely ham.
Through his airplane window once, Albuquerque had looked like an afterthought, dwarfed by the sky.
i didn’t do it deliberately at the time i wrote chapter one, but at some point i noticed that interesting quirk of jimmy’s very first observation of abq. it’s all sky and mountains and nothing of the actual city: “Albuquerque makes a disgustingly beautiful first impression: the sky as big and curved and blue as he’s always heard it can be, streaked with paintbrush clouds.”
It had looked like something ready to be forgotten
another callback to chapter 1. “Here, the architecture feels almost temporary, as if it’s been carelessly dropped on some enormous play-mat and forgotten.” i always try to use jimmy’s observations of abq to reflect how he feels about himself at that point.
along with the thought of the heavy suitcases that he’d watched slip and shift in the overhead lockers before takeoff
i don’t think it really stands out enough to be anything, but i was stuck for list items here and i ended up trying to fold in some of that slippin’ jimmy gaze. the idea that maybe he’s not only looking at people to read them / figure out how he could scam them, but looking for these liability insurance $$ payouts waiting to happen.
... along with the thought of their drive out to O’Hare, Jimmy silent in the passenger seat of the rental car, the radio off and Chuck’s grip tight on the steering wheel.
oops--just remembered jimmy says chuck’s waiting in a taxi!
Jimmy had listened to the line ring for what felt like forever, each silver chime spinning a silver thread across the city, winding toward his mother’s living room.
more damn callbacks! when he thinks about calling his mother in chapter 9: “He imagines a line emerging from the handset, a thin silvery thread spinning off from his room and his street and then out of Albuquerque, crossing over the Sandias and shooting northeastward, over rivers and fields and Dust Bowl states, until finally arriving in Cicero, in his mother’s living room.”
It echoed through the handset like it was being piped back to him, like the prison phone was just a sick joke, a closed loop, locked inside
so much of acb is jimmy trying to break out of these closed loops
In a bright and steady voice, or at least his brightest and steadiest, he had said, “Hey, Mom. Something’s happened.”

It seems unfamiliar at first, but then the city starts to take shape, and he thinks he can see the squat skyscrapers of downtown, the geometric cubes that rise from the flat land.
i wanted this to be the end point of a series, where jimmy’s first impression is the beginning, and him arriving back from cicero is the middle, and now only here is he finally familiar with the city. the next few sentences are kind of a walk through acb -- "squat skyscrapers of downtown” is similar to how jimmy sees the city in chapter 7 when they go to the movies, then we get central avenue/route 66 “historic and neon-glowed”, and then finally the airport on the “desert shore” like in chapter 14.
Might even see Chuck’s house, still lit by lantern light.
ofc jimmy’s thinking of the luminarias but the dramatic irony here was too good to pass up 🔥🔥🔥
And in the west now, clouds. As the sun vanishes below the horizon, they become briefly clear, shadowed with lilac and orange, and Jimmy can see their shape by the light on them.
you’re going to have to forgive me for how damn metaphorical this is gonna get, but thinking of metaphors is one of the big ways i spark ideas for description, and this ending is really just an enormous chunk of description, so 💀
these clouds. these damn clouds. ever since hamlin snr told jimmy to find a space in the world only he can can fit, jimmy’s thoughts have kept returning to that idea -- and his mother’s innocent words, too: “you were really in no shape”. so the idea that, if he can figure out what shape he is, he’ll know which space he can fit.
and throughout the fic when i was stuck on kim description i’d play with light, and the idea of kim being a source of light, like the sun. the fireworks sequence is a big example, where i wanted to make her as bright as the fireworks, or at the holiday party: “Beneath the hanging Christmas lights, she’s luminous.”
so when i wrote “and Jimmy can see their shape by the light on them” i was thinking about him seeing the shape of himself and therefore his place in the world because of kim.
... but the clouds only become briefly clear.
(it’s also a little bit of inspired/stolen phrasing from the end of no country for old men: “and i could see the horn from the light inside of it.”)
If he watched for long enough, he thinks that he could also see them moving slowly, driven by high winds.
oh did you think i was done talking about these clouds? ☁️☁️☁️
this from chapter 11: “A display entitled Surviving in a Moving Landscape shows how the dunes can shift almost forty feet a year in places, driven by high winds”
“surviving in a moving landscape” ♥️ i always thought that was a really nice way to look at the characters of bcs. they’re the animals in the dunes having to adapt to survive, but also the dunes themselves. moving slowly because of these intangible forces on them, adapting to the forces, but changing forever for it.
The winds move through him, too, hollowing him out.
a future callback, i borrowed "hollowing him out” again for chapter 5 of safs, so keep an eye out 👁
In the darkness, the flat land below the Sandias seems to go on forever, black and flickering with dying embers: scorched earth.
if i had seen this specific image of abq from the sandias before i wrote the chapter, the light on the clouds would’ve been the city lights of abq -- even BETTER than the sunset! look at it! LOOK!
He can even smell them on the wind: the woodsmoke scent of evening
jimmy thinks of night smelling like woodsmoke on their drive along route 66, and then again on the forecourt of clines corners. bringing that back here with the idea that it’s coming from those imaginary fires of the city lights.
And he thinks that his whole life since arriving in Albuquerque has been like a controlled burn: searing away the silk shirts and the fake Rolexes and the ice of Michigan Avenue until nothing remains—breath on a cold mirror vanishing—a blank slate.

the end here is inspired by this from “how to embrace a swamp creature” by tmg:

So he thinks about what he could build.
jimmy thinking very much like kim here, and especially what she said in the last chapter about the desert being sterile.
He thinks about his brother on a park bench, surrounded by luminarias. He thinks about a paper-wrapped book with fourteen words inside it.
i really wanted there to be some of chuck in this moment, even though i’ve ended up in such a shippery/kim place.
He thinks of letting her move against him, move over him, move around him. Of letting her define the edges of him.
the same idea as the light on the clouds, but hopefully a little more apparent! 😂and more returning images, and the seed planted by kim in the white sands motel.
there’s something so fragile about jimmy’s realisation here, i hope. he really is still doing so much of this for other people. it’s hard -- there’s something about slippin’ jimmy coming to abq and deciding to *dedicate years and years of his life to becoming a lawyer* that’s just... incredible. i tried to get to a place by the end of this fic where it made sense, and of course we all know he ends up doing it, but -- i always wanted there to be this inspiration from within himself to do it, too, outside of him just doing it to follow kim or to make chuck proud.
but i don’t think he’s found it here, as much as the shape of himself is briefly visible atop the sandia peak.
Jimmy wonders if he’s allowed to stay here all night, up on the Sandias. Up on this one high place.
oh jimmy if only you could stay up there forever. hamlin snr voice: perspective!!
He imagines waiting exactly here until the sun returns, until it rises behind him and breaks over the mountains.
Like sitting beside Kim on the trunk of her car, their legs pressed together beneath the blanket.
this specific idea of holding off on seeing 🌄morning over the sandias 🌄at the end of chapter 16 came as i was planning that chapter. i was worried that ending with a sunrise would seem too final, seem too much like the ending of the whole story, and that chapter 17 would then end up feeling tacked on.
Then, the dawn had seemed to reach out close enough to touch them, huge and breathless, warm fingers on his skin.
three rapid fire callbacks in these next sentences. first an inverse of this from chapter 6, when kim takes a cup of coffee from him: “He can feel the ghost of her fingers like sunlight on his skin.”
And Jimmy had inhaled the colors of it: blue and gold and orange, streaks of brightness across the enormous sky.
then white sands: “as Jimmy inhales the air and the colors he thinks that there could be nothing more opposite of a Cook County jail cell than this exact spot in the middle of the White Sands National Monument.”
Morning sliding over the land.
and this is so niche and impossible, but it’s “I watch the sun rise over this wall / I watch it break and slide” from “graffiti” by throwing muses, which is on the road trip playlist and shows up in chapter 10 with: “A smile crests Kim’s face like the sun over a wall.” but, you know. callback?
And now he stands on the edge of the viewing platform and he looks out into the darkness of the city.
And he imagines it all bathed in light.
i said that i decided to shift the idea of the sunrise here because it felt too much like an ending -- and man, the noise i made when i realised that jimmy imagining the sun rising behind him was jimmy imagining the world before him finally illuminated.
i also loved the idea of the weird clash of him standing there at sunset, at night, and imagining dawn.

Route 66 posts have been more lamentation than celebration of late, and righfully so -- signs have been vanishing and a classic Mother Road restaurant closed, much of this woe happening in New Mexico. But don’t for a second believe that it’s all doom and gloom. One of the nicest places to get your kicks is the Munger-Moss Motel, dating to 1946 and in the same caring hands since 1971. The sign is spectacular, just as grand as a Holiday Inn Great Sign and from the same era, the Fabulous Fifties. If you’re itching to take this epic journey from Chicago to Santa Monica, or just want to come out to Missouri -- the Munger Moss is in Lebanon, about 90 minutes from Branson -- you know you have to stop here. I visited in June 2013, just as dusk neared on a Saturday night. They turned on the sign for us, road-weary and disorientated after the long drive from Chicago, where we had breakfast at Lou Mitchell’s and had been dazzled with dozens of roadside wonders the rest of the day.
