Mini bus to mini home 🚐✨

This is where our dreams of adventure started, with a VW LT35 mini bus! It was converted by my partner and me. - My partner (Will) had graduated and was in full time work, and I was still in my final year at university!

We did everything ourselves (building, plumbing, gas, & electrics) in 4 months, motivated by the dream of living a simple life, travelling in a cosy home with everything we could possibly need. We were 21 and had no experience with anything like this before, looking to facebook groups and YouTube tutorials for guidance! It was the most difficult project, but somehow it call came together. And although it may not the most perfect build, it’s perfect for us - it’s cosy and definitely has character! 😂

We travelled for 200 days last year! 🚐🗺 It came with its challenges: living with less, in a confined space, with no bathroom but only a portable shower and toilet!!! But we discovered that van living is all about these compromises, whether it’s space, hot water, or a flushing toilet! But we found it was all worth it to be able to spend all our time in nature, and never miss a sunset! So although it frustrated us sometimes, it was always worth the extra effort things may take - like taking ages to boil the water to make a cup of coffee in the morning, filling up the water tank, emptying the toilet or having chilly outside showers! ❄️💦 We can not wait till we can take our rolling home out for an adventure again.

Here are some sunny interior shots of our bus. But soon I will share how I was able to keep making art on the road, and some of the best places I discovered that inspired me the most.

What I love are slow mornings, waking up to the sunlight stroking my face, climbing out of bed to make coffee and cracking open the door to appreciate the morning view. A little walk or a dip to refresh my body and mind, and a moment of contemplation before we consult our maps to plan the day’s route ahead.⁣

What I don’t love is being woken up at 7am by someone insistently honking their horn outside our van, stumbling groggily out of bed to be greeted by a police badge.⁣

They ask us where we’re from, what we’re doing here, and we reply that we’re sleeping and is there a problem?⁣

“No problem,” he says, and gets back in his police car and drives away. Well then why the hell wake us up?!⁣

These are the stories of two very different mornings parked in the same camp spot. Setting up camp is a little like flipping a coin; you never know what the result will be, but you can be sure it will make a good story.

Curt woke up at 5:00 a.m. this morning to smoke a pork butt. We had to store our smoker at my parent’s house when we downsized, so he makes pulled pork whenever we visit them. 😋 YUM... the best we’ve ever had. I’ll post a video along with the recipe soon.
