oh i should talk abt my first tav on here. imgonna make another character (durge) later to romance astarion but my first guy is a seldarine drow light cleric who follows ilmater :) im gonna be romancing halsin w him
his name is kaz'rith which is taken from "khaz" meaning "awakened" and "rith" meaning "protector" in drow. he took the name later in life after dedicating himself to ilmater. hes a self flagellation type and is dedicated to atoning for his past violence and injustices
hes very sweet but is sooooo repressed and he holds no resentment towards any evil-aligned person Period because hes like "we all have our own goals, we all have what we think is right. to one person, i could be their savior, and to another i could be a heartless monster. we all have different eyes to see the world with." etc etc type stuff

Woodland Champion
Thanks to Jess Estephan on Twitter (@Jesstephan) for previewing Woodland Champion! Whether you’re going for Elf tokens (Rhys, the Redeemed), an impenetrable wall of tokens (Emmara Tandris), tokens on command (Slimefoot, the Stowaway), or just general tokens (Rith, the Awakener), this can put a lot of eggs in this 2/2 basket. And don’t forget non-creature tokens as well, like Gold, Treasure, Clues...
Tumblr media
One thing that can make many token decks stall is abilities that limit the number of attackers, because tokens tend to use a go-wide strategy where a lot of small things deal small amounts of damage that stack up. Whether it be a Ghostly Prison, Silent Arbiter, or another attack prevention, Woodland Champion can be an attacker while you leave your other creatures behind. Since you’re making tokens anyway, this can work especially well with Sublime Archangel. Or combo this with Nacatl War-Pride to declare attackers and then suddenly pump it for each creature the defending player controls.
Yes, this doesn’t have trample or evasion, which is likely its biggest drawback. But on the flipside, this can be left as your defense if you are sending the tokens in.

Note
Hi Mark can I invoke the Birthday Clause and get some trivia about my favourite dragon, Oros the Avenger?
Failing that I’d take some Aesi trivia instead, plane name maybe?
In Invasion, we made a cycle of shard/arc dragons (Rith, the Awakener being the most famous). We had wanted to make the wedge versions, but finding the right set to do so was tricky. When Planar Chaos came around, we decided the what if nature of the set was a perfect opportunity. They were designed a 3MNO 6/6 flying dragons with a 2M trigger when they dealt combat damage. We couldn't find five new "pick a color" effects we liked, so we just tied the effects to color without making the player choose.
Happy Birthday!

Dank-Jank Combo: Sekki’s Surge
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For this combo we’re gonna be running in Gruul colors, most likely a token deck based in Omnath, Locus of Rage, Kressh, the Bloodbraided, and Rith, the Awakener. This combo will instantly burn out your opponents with a cycle of EtB triggers and token sacrifice. Let’s just in shall we!
1) Start with Warstorm Surge on the field and then play Sekki, Season’s Guide.  2) When Sekki enters the battlefield, it will trigger Warstorm Surge and allow us to deal 8 damage (Sekki’s power) back onto itself. 3) Sekki’s ability will trigger upon the damage trying to be dealt to it, preventing the damage and removing that many +1/+1 counters from Sekki, creating that many 1/1 colorless spirit tokens. Since Sekki will be preventing 8 damage and removing 8 counters, it will kill itself and be sent to the graveyard, leaving behind 8 colorless spirit tokens.  4) Upon the spirit tokens entering the battlefield, they will each deal one damage to any target. We’ll choose an opponent, dealing a total of 8 damage to them. Now for the loop. 5) We sacrifice the 8 spirit tokens to activate Sekki’s ability, returning it from the graveyard back to the battlefield. When Sekki re-enters the battlefield, we repeat this process of self burning the Season’s Guide into our graveyard to get the spirit tokens, which will in turn burn our opponents and then be sacrificed to bring back Sekki.
Brutal.
Depending on our commander’s color identity we also run other creatures and permanents that can feed off this interaction such as:

Hopefully this small combo brings some new life and spice to your red/green decks! I know I’ll definitely be running this in my Omnath, Locus of Rage deck to surprise a few friends. No one expected the Sekki Surge!

My edh group has a guy who runs kraj. The deck almost never wins, but then you have the day where his combo works and he gets to say. “Well you lose as I just cast your entire deck.” Not the only win condition he has, but defined my favorite to watch pull off. Which actually sums up most of his decks, hoard of notion, rith the awakener, the only deck he can usually with is gran daddy karlov. Still his decks are always fun to watch
Ah a fellow fan of jank decks. My Kraj deck is also pretty shit most of the time, but the combos and win conditions are all very silly and fun to watch unfold (just today I got a triple kill with 3 unblockable 30/30s)
Horde of Notions is also a card I wanted to build a deck around, but the mana base for a 5 color commander is too expensive for me

{So it turns out Rith the Awakener + Beastmaster Ascension is particularly hilarious against a Krenko deck.  I managed to swing with Rith + 37 6/6 saprolings for lethal.

Budget Rith Control

Note
Is it possible to build a decent deck around Rith the Awakener, or is she just another overcosted beat stick that's way past her prime? I've been attempting to build her for months now but I think I need a completely objective opinion on this matter.
Tumblr media
Rith’s token production requires that you jump through a lot of hoops. You have to wait a turn to get your tokens (unless you have a haste granter, in which case you’re on the hook for at least 9 mana between her casting cost and triggered ability) and how many you get is dependent on the board state.
Overall, she compares unfavorably with the other token Commanders in Naya. Hazezon Tamar makes lots of tokens without having to connect and commit additional mana, while Gahiji is a cheap anthem that discourages people from attacking you.
If you’re less interested in tokens and are just looking for a Naya-colored beatstick, then Samut and Uril are both promising Voltron commanders. And of course, there are lots of Commanders that are better than Rith if you’re willing to look outside her color identity.

Painter’s Servant Junior/Lite/decaf
Tumblr media
Shifting Sky is a less-broken (and not banned in Commander) version of Painter’s Servant. Where the Painter’s Servant affects all cards, spells, and permanents, Shifting Sky only affects non-land permanents. Common Cause works well for this, unless a land is animated, since it may then still be colorless.
Tumblr media
Or, you could choose a color that you don’t have in your deck, so all of your non-land permanents gain that color. You know, if you want your creatures to be multicolor for some reason. Or maybe you just want them to be immune to Fear (by making them black) or Intimidate (since all creatures share a color).  Ignore this bit, as it makes all permanents one color, but not in addition to their current. Rest of the article is legit though.
Or maybe you’re using it a bit more offensively, to make all permanents a certain color that your deck is built to have protection from. Your creatures have protection from Black, and since you chose to make everything Black your opponent can’t block your creatures, and when they attack you can block without your creatures taking damage.
Tumblr media
Or maybe you just think that having something in common is a good way to find peace.

Did you know I’ve played Magic: The Gathering for something like 15 years now?
Right now I’m really into Commander and Arena.
I’m thinking about upgrading my Karametra/Shalai deck to Rith, the Awakener and streamlining things into more of a midrange token/Pod affair. I think the way my deck is now is really unfocused and messy.
So I’m gonna take out the equipment stuff to make room for red and use all the equipment nonsense to build Sram. Not gonna get all the zero-cost equipments though I think regular equipments is fine. I used to play an Elesh Norn deck online that’s far pricier in paper so I’m gonna have the spirit of that deck live on in the form of Sram (so basically it’s gonna be 75% of the same deck).
But like I said I’m not gonna go the turbo route with a bunch of zero cost equips just to cycle. I’m gonna start off early with an aggressive equipment game but see if I can design the deck to seamlessly transition into the mono-white control strategy my old online Norn deck does. It’s essentially the idea, the Norn deck is heavy on equipment too, but Sram will have more equipment focus so as to give the deck a more solid early performance.
Then later on I’ll start rolling my recursion engines for inevitability. I also have a clever idea where I use Semblance Anvil and make the deck lean on artifacts since I’ll have plenty of cheap, replaceable equipments to throw on it. So then I can use that to start building a lot of artifact mana and powering out stuff like The Immortal Sun and Platinum Angel. Maybe I’ll grab a Wurmcoil Engine and Trading Post, too.
And then my green leftovers I want to use in a Kumena merfolk deck. Merfolk is my current Arena grinding deck and I’ve fallen so head over heels in love with it that I want to build him as a Commander, too. Seriously, Kumena is so stupidly strong. I feel like he’s one of if not THE biggest reason why merfolk is even passable in Standard right now. He’s so disgustingly strong. So I’m gonna build him as my third Commander deck eventually.
