⚠️⚠️ T/W ⚠️⚠️ Here in the US the month of May is known as Mental Health Awareness Month & Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month. This week both causes, both of these communities have lost someone. #HanaKimura, a 22 yr old wrestler, took her own life on May 23. At 3am she posted alarming tweets & pictures of cutting her wrists: “Nearly 100 frank opinions every day. I cant deny that I was hurt. Im dead. Thank you for giving me a mother. The life I wanted was to be loved. Thank you to everyone who supported me. I love it but Im weak. Im sorry. I dont want to be human anymore. I wanted to be loved. Thank you everyone. I love you. Bye.” Hana was a 2nd generation wrestler. Her mother #KyokoKimura (slide 5) wrestled for 14 years for Stardom, Ice Ribbon, & others. The two held the Artist Of Stardom trios titles. Kyoko’s final match of her career was against Hana. She debuted March 2016 wrestling for Wrestle-1, Sendai Girls, Ring Of Honor & Stardom. By 2019 she led her own cyber goth unit called #TokyoCyberSquad. She won the 2019 5Star Grand Prix, the most prestigious tournament & was selected to wrestle in Madison Square Garden (slide 9). Her last fight was March 24. She was a strong young woman, a fighter, but still thought she was weak. She had been #bullied as a child growing up #multiethnic, half #Japanese, half #Indonesian in Japan. Becoming a public figure brought on #cyberbullying. It escalated further after she joined the reality show #TerraceHouse & got into an argument w/ a fellow cast member. Days before her death she reposted hate filled tweets sent to her. Now shes gone. She could still be here. It hurts to see. I hope the people reposted were reported cuz it was a cry for help. As I reflect while on my morning walk, I cannot stress enough why bullying, especially cyberbullying, is absolutely unacceptable. Hana Kimura, a well-known Japanese wrestler and star of the Japanese TV series Terrace House, committed suicide because of cyberbullying. She was tormented by scathing remarks about her losing her temper on the show. She also began to post alarming pictures of self-harm in response to all of it. Her last post was of her with her cat and a letter saying goodbye. I post this not to condemn those who slandered her, but to inform about the consequences of what we post and what happens when social media becomes a forum for negativity, hate, and scrutiny. I know that we are not perfect, but we have to be better than this. What we post about someone can affect how he or she behaves toward others and can affect one's self-esteem. If you have nothing nice to say online, don't post it and keep it to yourself. Post something that will make someone feel better or make someone happy. We at @TerracedOut have yet to cover the Hana Kimura episodes on our podcast, but tragic news just broke a few hours ago that she has passed away due to suicide amid cyber bullying. Her time on #TerraceHouse culminated to a complicated note before production shut down and here we are now. This raises some good questions about the mental and emotional support that the cast members need to be provided with by production a la other @netflix offerings such as The Circle or Love Is Blind, in order to support these young cast members who are catapulted into global stardom and just expected to be okay and handle it on their own. While a huge part of the draw of Terrace House as a program are these journeys of growth that we get to follow along with and observe as the housemates realize their own immaturities, naïvetés. Their strengths as well as their weaknesses. We cannot ignore that the amount of eyes on these people are unprecedented. We at @TerracedOut hope that the production team of Terrace House will put into place a better emotional and mental support system to better allow for the cast members to be safe, and to prevent tragedies like this one from ever occurring again. Please be kind to one another. It’s easy to judge from a couch or a microphone, but each and every single one of us need to be mindful and above all else, kind to one another. I know I loved Hana’s bubbly energy, adorable smile, and it truly breaks my heart that we’ll never get to watch her experience all the incredible things life has to offer her.
