 The “Iron Poet”,  Richard Serra
(November 2, 1938 – March 26, 2024)
Renowned sculptor Richard Serra, known for his monumental steel structures that reshaped the landscape of contemporary art, passed away at the age of 85 at his residence in Orient, N.Y.
His groundbreaking works, characterized by massive tilting corridors and spirals of steel, offered viewers a unique experience, inviting them to navigate through and around the imposing forms to fully comprehend their essence.
Because of this invitation to explore space, materiality, and site, the artist has been long-recognized in the architectural community, earning him the Architectural League of New York President’s Medal in 2014, becoming the first artist to receive the honor.

One of my favorite artists passed away yesterday. I fell in love with his work the second I saw it for the first time in my history of arts class.
Rest in Peace, Richard Serra <3

Richard Serra passed away on Tuesday, 3/26/24. In the video above, as part of PBS News Hour, Serra takes an interviewer on a tour of his 2007 MOMA exhibition, Richard Serra: 40 Years.
The program also provides some background on his history and discusses a bit of his creative process. One technique was to use a list of verb actions. He would choose one from the list and apply that to different materials. He explains in the video how he used "to lift" for a rubber sculpture in the exhibition.

If you are in Los Angeles, one of his most famous sculptures, Band (2006), is on view at LACMA. In NYC you can see Equal (2015), which consists of eight forged steel boxes stacked in pairs, at the Museum of Modern Art.

“His work titled 2022, a single forged steel round, which he placed in the center of our 20th Street gallery in the spring of 2022, was his last realized sculpture. The experience of exhibiting this work, which to me felt like a sort of closing statement, is unforgettable. It’s hard to overstate what we are all losing with his passing.”
Richard Serra may have died two days ago, but he's apparently been dead to David Zwirner since 2022.
