Possible Breakthrough?
I was talking ER lore with @thatboreddrake, and he pointed something out to me. The game's opening narration is as follows:
The fallen leaves tell a story. The great Elden Ring was shattered. In our home, across the fog, the Lands Between. Now, Queen Marika the Eternal is nowhere to be found, and in the Night of the Black Knives, Godwyn the Golden was the first to perish.
Soon, Marika's offspring, demigods all, claimed the shards of the Elden Ring. The mad taint of their newfound strength triggered the Shattering. A war from which no lord arose.
Which gives us this sequence of events: The Elden Ring is shattered, Marika disappears (imprisoned within the Erdtree), the Night of the Black Knives (in which Godwyn is the first among many to die), the looting of the Great Runes, and finally the wars of the Shattering.
Did you catch that?
Marika shattered the Elden Ring and was imprisoned in the Erdtree (along with Radagon) before the Night of the Black Knives.
Most interpretations I've seen, mine included, assumed that Marika shattered the Ring in a moment of nihilistic grief following the death of her favorite son, Godwyn. But the sequence of events here seems to rule that out.
At first I thought that this revelation completely shattered (heh) my current understanding of the lore. But it would actually answer two questions that I've been stuck on for awhile.
At the end of her reign, was Marika genuinely remorseful for her past tyranny and trying to atone? Or was she trying to get out of paying the piper, leaving her children to deal with the consequences of her actions?
If Ranni needed to kill a god/demigod in order to be free of her fate, why choose Godwyn? Why not Marika, the tyrant who broke up her parents? Why not any of the unnamed demigods killed in NBK? Why not Godrick or Godefroy?
From the Black Knife Set:
The assassins that carried out the deeds of the Night of the Black Knives were all women, and rumored to be Numen who had close ties with Marika herself.
I'll probably do another post outline the potential Marika/Eternal Cities connection. But briefly, she has close ties with the Black Knife Assassins, the bloated ants feasting on the corpses deep underground in the vicinity of the Eternal Cities drop Numen Runes, and Marika's Scarseal is found in the Worshipper's Woods, downstream from Nokron.
It also appears evident that while they worked with her in the past, the Black Knife Assassins are not loyal to Ranni. Their leader, Alecto, is locked up on Ranni's land, and the BKAs kill Iji and try to kill Blaidd near the end of her questline.
So here's my proposal:
Marika is plotting to rebel against the Greater Will. She brings Ranni into her confidence, both because she believes that their goals align and because she needs a mage of Ranni's caliber to enchant the assassins' knives. But at this point, killing Godwyn is only a contingency plan. All things being equal, Marika would rather not kill her son.
Marika's Plan A is to face the Elden Beast herself. There are a couple different ways this could have played out. Maybe she planned to kill Radagon and use the Sacred Relic sword to kill the beast, but he fought back and shattering the Ring was the best she could manage. Maybe she planned to shatter it all along, hoping that it would sever the Greater Will's connection to her, or to the Lands in general.
Regardless, the plan goes sideways, and ends with a partially shattered ring and Marika fused to Radagon and crucified within the Erdtree.
So now Marika needs to get out of that body, ASAP. She needs to slay her Empyrean flesh. The contingency plan kicks in. Ranni is meant to enchant the knives, and Alecto (who works for Marika) is meant to kill Godwyn and Marika, thus freeing her from the control of the Greater Will.
But Marika fundamentally did not understand Ranni. She thought that Ranni would gladly be the god of the new age while Marika walked away scot-free, because that's what a younger Marika would have done. She could not grasp the fact that Ranni hated the thought of godhood and saw the position as a curse, not a blessing.
Ranni had been planning all along to steal a Black Knife for herself and steal the half of the Cursemark meant for Marika. Marika saw Ranni as a protege who wouldn't be able to see past the promise of power (despite how badly godhood worked out for Marika herself). But to Ranni, this was a golden opportunity to both escape her fate and to screw over the people who hurt her mother.
By the time Alecto discovers the ruse, Ranni has already completed the ritual. The other BKAs scatter throughout the Lands, possibly also killing Ranni's half-sisters/cousins/aunts in retaliation (thanks @katyahina!). Alecto, furious at the betrayal and maddened by grief at the death of Tiche, attempt to go after Ranni herself. After a closely matched and surely impressive duel with Blaidd, she ends up defeated and locked in an evergaol.
I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts. The exact sequence of events of NBK and the Shattering never quite felt right to me, and this seems to fit the pieces together a bit more smoothly.

Marika wasn't surprised that Alecto was the ringleader of her son's murder. What really surprised her was how long it took Alecto to try killing her ex-husband.

Speaking of Marika and Alecto (and the headcanon that they were sisters), I would love to draw a scene someday where Marika wakes up to discover Godwyn’s death, and she has this horrible moment of realization that Alecto did it.
Then she orders the Knives to be hunted down and killed, but specifically Tiche, Alecto’s dearest daughter. All for vengeance.
TRAGIC SIBLINGS MOMENT.

Wait. Your horses may be held.
The Black Knives are named after minor Greek goddesses.
Alecto is Αληκτώ. One of the three Furies and the personification of "unceasing anger". Tiche is Τύχη (literally meaning luck). Tiche (or Tyche) was the goddess of prosperity and luck.
Does this mean anything about their lore? Maybe, I dunno.
My point is English pronunciations of Greek names suck. Both Alecto and Tiche are straight up Greek words and some people were butchering Tiche so bad that only now I just figured it out.
Anyway, the "e" in Alecto is like the "e" in "pie". And you should be putting empasis on the "o". And the "ch" in Tiche is like the "ch" in Charon. The "e" is the same with Alecto. Emphasis on the "i".

John 8:1
THE TOWER HA
Tumblr media
Definitely sounds like Alecto, who is not a human, being unused to a human body. But it says "In the dream..." at the beginning of this, which makes it sound like the narrator here normally doesn't have this weird relationship with sleep, which points back to this maybe being Harrow dreaming of being Alecto. But if she is Alecto in the context of the dream, why did John call her "Harrow" earlier? Maybe it's a similar thing to how the pre-Resurrection names of the Lyctors are expunged, and John is actually saying those names, and calling Harrow "Alecto", but because it's a dream, Harrow hears Alecto's name as her own, based on knowing that it's the name of the person she is in the dream?
Tumblr media
This is funny to me, because Flat Earthers aren't actually nice people. Like, there are reasons people believe in that conspiracy theory despite literal millennia of evidence disproving it, and they are not benign ones. They're not like the UFO guys. I also feel like a Flat Earther promoting John would actually make people less likely to believe he was the real deal
Tumblr media
There actually is a telescope called LUCIFER (or at least, it used to be called that, they seem to have changed then name, lmao), which I didn't know about, but what's wild is that I absolutely should have known about it, since it was being built near where I grew up while I was going to high school there. But that was 20 years ago, and there are much higher profile telescopes to talk about, so why this one?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So John is somehow more powerful than regular necromancers at this stage, but also not as powerful as Lyctor Harrow. Is he just like regular-Lyctor-powerful here?
Tumblr media
I don't have any idea what this means, re: Jesus. Is she saying that it was the miracles and bread and fishes and healing people and so forth that caused the Romans to crucify Jesus, and not his role as a charismatic ringleader for a bunch of unhappy colonized people that did that, or am I wrong here?
Tumblr media
Oh, Alfred being a hedge fund manager is hilarious, actually
Tumblr media
Oh, so this is the cow thing I've seen everyone talk about
I was hoping I could get some estimate on how long this wall would have had to be in existence for it to wind up on Google Earth, but apparently Google's official position on how frequently they update their maps is "it is a mystery"
Tumblr media
So I guess that this is a dream that John is having, too, and the post-apocalyptic environment is here because this is also John remembering the part of the story where it was just him and Alecto, and everyone else was dead, and they are having a shared dream? This is the most dream bubble thing that doesn't actually have the word "dream bubble" in it. But I don't think I can say anything, because my current creative writing project also has vaguely Homestuck-inspired shared dreams in it

I notice you have a theme for liking stabby people
Ciaran in DS1
The Crow and Eileen in Bloodborne
So who's your Elden Ring stabby blorbo?
(I leave shiny pebbles as a symbol of goodwill between the squid people and the crows)
BIM WE OF THE CROWS ACCEPT THIS GRACIOUS OFFERING OF SHINIES FROM THE BENEVOLENT SQUIDLINGS!
Tumblr media
Also, HMMM SO YOU NOTICED! Yess, I do adore my stabby blorbos (Eileen, Ciaran, and Crow could stab me and I’d thank them tbh).
For Elden Ring, it probably will come as no surprise that, besides the beloved sword-birds, my favorite stabbers are the Black Knives. I love this Nazgul girl gang so much lol.
Especially Alecto!
Tumblr media
(Ok, that’s not a picture of Alecto but anyway 💀)
My favorite headcanon is that Alecto was Marika’s elder sister, and they were both Numen royalty long before the Greater Will chose Marika as queen of the Lands Between. The other Black Knives were Alecto’s daughters and cousins. Thus also related to Marika.
Something went wrong, they fought, became enemies, etc.. can you tell I like a side of tragic siblings with my stabbers yet? 🤣
I may be projecting a little bit of Ciaran onto Alecto, but I just like the conflicted, morally-grey assassin archetype so much. Also Alecto’s fight is beautiful idk.
CHEERS M8!!

Saw a post on reddit that reminded me of this- why are dead Black Knife Assassins found near Blaidd and Iji at the end of Ranni's questline?
The most likely in my opinion is that Ranni employed them (interestingly, the three wolves outside her rise are gone when Blaidd turns). But that seems uncharacteristically cold, even for Ranni- especially in ordering Iji's death. She never struck me as the kind to execute her agents for a mistake
Maybe it's also possible that they were sent by the Greater Will? Their allegiances after the Night of Black Knives are unclear, since one can be found right outside the Queen's bedchamber in Leyndell, so that also seems plausible to me. What do you think?
hello!! I’m so glad you asked me this because this is a subject I’ve thought about a lot. This is gonna be a long answer so buckle up:
I think that while the Black Knife Assassins did work with Ranni during the Night of the Black Knives, something happened to break this alliance and they are now hostile to her. The main piece of info that tells me this is that Alecto, the Black Knife ringleader, is imprisoned in an evergaol at the Moonlight Alter in Liurnia. This area is blocked off until the final stage of Ranni’s questline, where we find Ranni there beneath the Cathedral of Manus Celes. Alecto is described to have been imprisoned “for the act of slaying a demigod.” It’s weird that Alecto is imprisoned here in Liurnia, at one of Ranni’s bases of operation no less, when the reason for her imprisonment is something she did FOR RANNI. I think what must have happened is that Ranni and her confidants betrayed Alecto and the assassins to the Golden Order to pin the crime solely on the assassins and deflect blame from themselves (to this day, it’s a secret that Ranni orchestrated the Night of the Black Knives), and then they “took care of” her on behalf of the authorities. Alecto also carries the spirit ashes of her daughter Tiche, who was killed during their retreat from the capital. I wonder if she might partially blame Ranni for her death?
Tumblr media
Another point of evidence is that the dead assassins found around Blaidd are specifically in front of Ranni’s rise. When we find Blaidd in the evergaol and free him, he says that he’s going to see Ranni now to check if she’s safe. The next time we see him, he’s surrounded by the dead assassins in front of where Ranni resides. To me this implies that the assassins came to Ranni’s rise to assassinate RANNI, expecting that she’d be there, and Blaidd intercepted them when he came to check on her. Blaidd can also be heard reassuring himself that he could never betray Ranni; that he’s part of her very being, and he says “she needs me.” Which tells me that he came upon a situation where he saw that Ranni was in danger, not that assassins followed and attacked him, and killing these assassins helps him prove to himself that he can still protect Ranni despite Iji’s warning.
Tumblr media
Though Ranni is shown to be overall pretty ruthless, I don’t think she would order Iji and Blaidd’s deaths. She asks us to tell them that she loves them! They grew up together; they’re her family. The situation feels more to me like an inevitable tragedy: Ranni pushes forward with her plans despite knowing that she’s endangering Iji and Blaidd’s lives by doing so.
tl;dr, I think that Ranni betrayed the Black Knife Assassins up to the authorities, and in revenge they planned a coordinated attack against Ranni and her team, which Blaidd intercepted.
