The thing that’s striking about our latest collection of Christmas decorations and gifts is the use of vibrant colours. They’ve been manufactured by our artisan partner Varnam Craft Collective in India. One of the meanings of the word ‘Varnam’ itself is ‘colours’. Channapatna where the collection comes from, is known as Gombegala Ooru (toy-town) of Karnataka. The toys made here have traditionally been characterised by their distinct use of bright colours and a highly lustrous lacquer finish. ⁣ In an interview with New Indian Express, founder Karthik explains his design philosophy: “Varnam (colours) is an ode to colourful India... All of our recent additions of sustainable Christmas accessories, gifts and accessories for the home have been made in partnership with social enterprise, Varnam Craft collective in India. What truly inspired us to work Varnam, is not just the beauty, the functionality or the sheer simplicity of the products but the story behind them. ⁣ Since 2012, Varnam has been working with Channapatna artisans to revive the 200-year-old lac turnery craft form, that saw a steady decline over the years ~ owing to it’s limited production to just toys, the absence of support for the artisans and their work, innovation in terms of design, and the availability of cheap, mass-produced imitation products in the market. ⁣ What’s admirable about Varnam’s story and it’s journey and success, are founder Karthik’s passion for the craft, respect for the artisans and the efforts taken to reorient the craft form.
