Books and Connotations
Catkins are coming off the magnolias and I saw an actual cherry blossom yesterday, though not on the tree down the hill who’s usually first past the post. I suppose I might be able to relax a bit instead of dreading a sudden cold snap? (HAHAHAHAHAHA WHO AM I FOOLING.) I got to a major character death in the Sekrit Projekt last night, broke down crying, and decided it was time for bed. Going back…

So many of the podcasts I listen to, I wonder longingly why the hosts haven't guested on the others
Why hasn't Geoffrey James done Never Seen It, or Sports Bullies the Game*, or All Fantasy Everything (especially considering they're network mates)?
Why haven't the Worst Idea fellas done AFE? Or Review Revue? They've displayed their ability to improv
Why hasn't Ian Karmel done NSI, Do You Need a Ride?, or I Said No Gifts!?
I could go on, but these are the things I pine for
*P.S. Where the fuck did Sports Bullies go? I miss it badly

!!!NEW REVIEW!!!
Tumblr media
as US involvement in the war looms closer with each passing day, catharsis via animated cartoon was growing in demand. thus enters Rookie Revue—Friz Freleng’s second official foray into the spot gag format, this time structuring the cartoon as a “tour” through an army camp. lackadaisical buglers, innumerate soldiers, and caricatures of studio insiders are just a handful of the antics abound. joy! rapture!

Bureaucratic Duck-Nibbles
It’s been trying to snow for days now, producing sleet and spatters between bouts of very cold rain. There’s the occasional edge of huge, wet flakes, but those disappear soon as they hit the ground. If we get a strong east wind through the Gorge we’ll have a deep freeze, but it doesn’t seem like that’s on the cards. As it is, we’ve had just enough below-zero this winter to cut down on some summer…

Anime Year in Review
Last year I made a silly post ranking the three shows I happened to watch. This year, I got way more into anime (and manga), so let's do it properly this time
Revue Starlight* - Easy top star spot. This anime was flawless. I watched it twice this year and will be watching it again. The story, the animation, the music were all impeccable. The music, oh my god; I listen to the soundtrack every day. Some of my other favorites on this list I'd only recommend based on your personal tastes, but this show should be watched by everyone. (The sequel and spin-offs, not so much. They all use the revues in a way that completely undermines the premise of the main series)
Heavenly Delusion - So fucking good. Second on this list, but I think it's the best show that came out this year. Deeply traumatic, but in such a satisfying way. The horror elements were so brutal and so well done, and I love that the man-eating monsters were the least gruesome part of the show. If it wasn't for the stinker of the ice monster episode, I think this could've been my favorite anime
Call of the Night* - Adored this show. Yes it's a celebration of the hedonism of vampires, but it's so earnest and down-to-earth with it that it feels so good to watch that I did it twice (sub and dub). I also got into the manga, which is sadly wrapping up next month, but hopefully that prompts an announcement about season 2
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End - Super chill show, which is a great way to wind down the week. It's such a cool concept too, following the adventurer after the adventure is over. It's just a reflection on life and I love it
The Witch from Mercury (cour 2) - Given that I run a sideblog just for this show, it might be surprising that it's so low on my list, but the second cour was a lot weaker than the first. Not nearly enough of Suletta and Miorine interacting, and way too much chaff following Guel's B-plot. I've said it before, but I think the worst part of this Gundam show is that it's a Gundam show. A+ epilogue though, and Suletta is still my favorite character this year
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off - I enjoyed the original comic and the live action movie. I didn't realize this new adaption was really a sequel, but it ended up being a great way to bring the old story to the modern decade. (Two decades later isn't much, but it was very of-its-time)
Spy x Family (cour 2) - Very fun show. Following several viewpoint characters means the individual episodes might be hit-or-miss (as much as I love Anya, the episodes at the school are relatively bland), but the overall package was sweet and enjoyable
Nimona - Another comic I really enjoyed. The movie was strong, although it cut a lot of parts out that I thought were important to the original story
The Orbital Children - Directed by the same person who directed one of my long-time favorites (Dennou Coil), the first two acts of this really felt like a modern update. Stunning visuals, great sci-fi, thrilling adventure. Went totally off the deep in the third act, though
Joshiraku* - As the characters pointed out, adapting a manga that takes entirely inside the green room of a stand-up comedy club is an odd choice. It was off-the-charts hilarious, though. Considering some of the scripts were entirely pun-based, it must've been an immense amount of work to translate, but they absolutely pulled it off
Oshi no Ko - The only reason I watched this show was because the OP was such a banger. (Several fantastic anime songs by YOASOBI this year, and Idol is easily my favorite.) The first, feature-length episode was incredible and I literally cried at the end. If it was a stand-alone movie, it would be a couple of spots higher on this list. The rest of the show was fine, but not really what I was here for. I'll probably still watch season 2 though
Arknights: Prelude to Dawn* - I bounced off the gacha game immediately, but the worldbuilding and character designs seemed cool, so I wanted to give the anime adaptation a chance. The plot was very thin but serviceable enough. At least it looked nice to watch.
The Magical Revolution of ... - Not typing that whole thing out. It was a cute show. The yuri stuff was nice, but I wish for a show about a magical inventor, there was a non-zero amount of magical inventing shown on screen
* indicates the show aired prior to 2023
A lot of shows I really loved this year. Looking forward to next year, the anime I'm most hyped for is obviously Dungeon Meshi. It looks like it's going to be incredible. The second season of Arcane is also scheduled to come out late next year, which is also very exciting. Technically Frieren has a second cour in January, but they're airing both cours as basically a single 24-episode season, so that doesn't really count
For older shows I mean to catch up on, YouTube has recced me clips of probably every single joke from K-On!, and it's really grown on me. Definitely going to watch that soon. I'm also in the mood to watch Bocchi the Rock! again. I should also make myself watch the first couple episodes of PMMM. Nothing I've seen on Tumblr has grabbed me for that one, but it's right in the middle of some of the other shows I was gushing about here and it would be dumb not to try it

I feel so sorry for the Twitter users who have just emigrated to Tumblr because when I saw the first Goncharov posts, I was confused for a few seconds before I checked the tag and nodded when I saw #unreality. I was “Ah yes, people are inventing stuff.” because all of Tumblr going insane on one specific thing is something I’m used to.
But I don’t think people who aren’t used to this strange environment are in any way prepared for that kind of craziness and oh boy, what a way to be introduced to Tumblr.

I already don’t like All Might bashing but nothing annoys me more than the specific brand of All Might bashing where All Might furiously discriminates against quirkless people.
When All Might tells Izuku that he doesn’t think someone without a quirk can be a hero? Most of his answer is about himself. He is the quirkless kid who became a hero and he is now horribly alone, depressed, has PTSD, too many organs lost in action and a husk of his former self while the pressure of being the number 1 hero is grinding down on him as he is losing more and more time to use his quirk every day while being extremely aware that criminality staying as low as it is fully depends on him being the number 1 hero.
When Izuku asked him if he could be a hero, All Might probably had a magnificent flashback to his whole life and couldn’t, in good conscience, tell someone so similar to him to follow the same path because of all the hardship he went through.
Izuku being the only one to help during the second Sludge villain attack didn’t make him realize that “Even someone without a quirk has the potential to be a hero!” but it made him remember what heroism really is about.

Loid is such a funny character, the first time you are introduced to him he seems like a cool, suave, charismatic but also ruthless man who focuses only on his mission and the embodiment of every spy character troupe there is and he is! But also few chapters in and he's like "My daughter/wife doesn't like me 🥺🥺🥺🥺 i am a failure of a spy 😩😩😭😭😭😭" at like every minor inconvenience
Loid, who bought an entire library of parenting books right after getting Anya and who makes sure to arrange dates with Yor despite being overworked and who gets actually angry when people say bad things about her: "I am just doing this for the mission."

Second End Of The Year reviews!
This time my movie of the year, and honestly? One of my favorite pieces of cinema ever.
Revue Starlight says it bluntly: Kill the past self and be born anew.  Ambition is the fuel that keeps us moving forward, and clinging in the past is a quick way to starve.
Full article below:
Char's bests of the year: Revue Starlight: The Movie
What happens after you accomplish your goal? Life isn’t a game, you don’t roll the credits. Shōjo☆Kageki Revue Starlight is an anime about a girl's ambition and her reasons for standing on stage, then Revue Starlight: The Movie follows after by asking this girl “What’s next?”
If you spent your whole life existing for this moment, is everything after that just worthless? Who are you now? Revue Starlight says it straight: you kill the old you and be born again.
Tumblr media
“I am Reborn” is a center to the anime’s themes. It’s the idea that every step you take and every new stage you set foot on is yourself being reincarnated again, because in that moment you are a person who lives for that story. When the story finishes, you die, and then you search for a new ambition: a new reason to live.
To grow up, to graduate, to see hope in the future, you need to always look forward, or you’ll end up wondering what you’re living for, and you won’t be able to let go of the ones around you, and hold them and yourself back from growing.
If you cannot change, if you cannot hunger for more, then you’ll be left for dead.
Tumblr media
It’s such a great take on a Coming of Age story, and is packaged into one of the greatest movies ever, and one of the best made sequels to anything.  With fantastic animation, phenomenal actors, some of the greatest compositions and visuals.
You give the Revue Starlight team a movie budget, and they give you a masterpiece.
People look at this series from the outside and assume it’s another idol or slice of life show, but I can tell you now, it’s more than that. This movie does not pull punches, it’s raw and bloody, it frames the passing of life into adulthood as a hell you have to bare.
If you haven’t seen the original anime, I cannot recommend it enough, it’s one of my favorites.
It was a stage play first, you can find some of the plays online, and the actresses for the show and the play are the same. It’s fantastic to see them perform both live and as voice actors.
The anime is only 12 episodes long, and its story will take you places you’d never expect. It’s one of those shows you should watch with as little prior knowledge as possible, and it’s why I’ve avoided saying any details in this review, because I need you to see this show and its movie fresh.   (Don’t look anything up, just pull up that first episode and see what you think.)
Tumblr media
The movie is a sequel to the show, taking place a year after it when the girls are in their final year at Seisho Academy. Graduation is coming up, and their final performance as classmates.
After this they will all go different ways; college, university, work, whichever way their dreams take them.
All of us have been here, at those parts of your life when everything is about to change. Your highschool friends will not be following you your entire life, even if you’re on the same train now, it doesn’t mean you share the same destination.
It isn’t saying goodbye, in a way, but growing up involves just accepting how relationships and priorities change. You won't mean the same to some 10 years later, it’s impossible for anything to stay the same when it’s up against the passage of time.
And sometimes, that truth hurts more than just saying goodbye.
Tumblr media
It also serves as a strong example of character development. One of the common complaints I saw about the original Revue Starlight anime is that the characters felt very one-note, which is not uncommon for a large cast anime, especially a shorter one, but this movie shows them at their fullest: what they love, what they hate, what the want to do and what they struggle with. Their feelings come through realistically, because it's all pain we’ve felt as people who’ve grown up and strived for anything, and for anyone who's ever created or been part of a project.
A large source of depression in adulthood is when life starts to feel nothing but a repeated cycle, when you are not doing anything but surviving. One of the ways we deal with this as humans is to have ambitions and goals, a sort-of goal post we set in the life ahead of us. This helps us get out of an endless cycle, and instead lets us see progress in our own day to day.
Tumblr media
In Revue Starlight the Movie, this is a struggle our main character lives with; the pain of having no goal post, no ambition.  She already accomplished what she spent her life working towards. She got to stand on stage as the lead of her favorite play with her favorite person acting beside her. It was her dream since they were both kids.
So while all of the fellow actresses write their future goals, apply to college and university, as they imagine their next role, and the next, and the next…  Aijo Karen, our star, is stuck, and she is empty, because she no longer sees the brilliant light of the next stage of life, but instead sees the moment when all her co-stars will leave her side.
It’s a fantastic premise for a sequel, and they execute it perfectly.
Images of tomatoes and other vegetables to represent desire. Feed the furnace of your heart with ambitions in order to keep moving through life.  An endless railroad lays in front of us, and you have to ask yourself, where’s your stop?
I cannot recommend this movie enough to anyone. If you're a fan of animation, of theater, of stories strong on metaphors. It has music, fights, and some of the most brilliant visual development I’ve ever seen. If you want a good story, if you want a good movie, then do yourself a favor and watch this visual masterpiece.
