Avatar: The Last Airbender. Episodes 3

Join me as our epic journey continues! Underneath the cut, Sokka does the worm in his sleeping bag, cake-bending becomes a thing, and FEELS explode everywhere.

Episode Three: “The Southern Air Temple”

~ You know, as I watch this intro again, I'm find myself wondering once again why a show that has such a heavily (and wonderfully,) Eastern influenced setting as this one does chose to use the Western Platonic elements, instead of the Chinese Wuxing system. (You know, the one where Wood and Metal are also elements but Air is not.) Maybe they thought it was a road too well travelled, or perhaps they intended it as a tribute to Miyamoto, but, still, it is a little surprising.

(On the other hand, Avatar: The Last Woodbender wouldn't really work as a title, would it. *innocent whistling*)

~ Also, I'd like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Annica for sharing the link to this wonderful copy of the Avatar World Map. She said it would be fun to follow along where they visit on their journey, and, as usual, she's right on the money. :)

~ “Sleep now, temple later.” Been there, Sokka. I've been there. (And your protests got you about as far as mine did. *sigh*)

~ So! The thick plottens! I can't help but notice that Zuko's ship is a lot smaller and considerably more shabby than the others at the dock. Now, I suppose that could be because he, sensibly, wanted a smaller ship so he could range further inshore, but I'm willing to guess that it's meant to indicate that he's in no high-standing at court. That might help explain his temper and his drive to defeat the Avatar.

~ Commander... Jowl(?) I think: “And General Iroh, great hero of our nation.”

Me:… *lightbulb* Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! It's him! He's the original tea and honour guy!

My sister Emma: *eyebrow raised* “Tea and honour?”

Me: “It's a Legend of Korra thing.”

Emma: “Suuuuuuuure it is.”

Me: *indignant* “It is!”

Emma: “I believe you. I just don't care.”

You see what I have to put up with? (*grins*)

~ Okay, a few things here. Firstly, if Zuko is the son of the Firelord, I'm assuming I was wrong about his having low status at court, fortunately, as I'm hardly ever right, this is no big shock to me. Secondly, I looooooooved him and Iroh playing hot potato with the story of what happened to their ship. I loved it. Lastly, this Commander Jowl fellow: Dislike the character, like his voice, respect his sideburns. Those kind of whiskers take commitment.

~ Sokka, when you've reached the point of actually talking to your stomach, you have a problem. If it starts answering you? Well, then you have a real problem.

~ Blubbered Seal Jerky? … I think I need a bathroom break. *covers mouth*

~ Katara is a sweetheart, isn't she? Trying as gently (a little too gently, in my opinion,) as possible to warn Aang about the homecoming he's likely to have. And Aang's naivety is almost painful, bless him. A really strong scene for both of them, this one.

~ Hey, hey, hey, Commander J? My map is better than yours! *sing song voice* (Thanks again, Annica!)

~ Okay my respect for Commander J just went through the roof. Talking to the crew is such a common-sense thing to do and yet the kind of thing people never ever do in fiction. And more fool Zuko for thinking you could keep a secret dozens, maybe hundreds of people, had been privy too without it getting out. I wonder if that was honest ignorance or classism on his part (Although, to be fair, Zuko's demeanour up to this point hasn't been the kind that would inspire loyalty, so he may have just been playing the odds as best he could.)

~ I love the way this show has built the camaraderie between our main three protagonists. I feel sorry for Sokka always being the butt of the practical joke, but he's not just the comic relief, he has his moments, and watching him come up trumps for Aang in the airball segment just shows the depths of his compassion, hide it though he may. And I couldn't agree more with his comment to Katara. “You can't protect him forever.” Wise words, butt-monkey. Wise-words.

~ If Martial Art's movies had taught me anything, it's this: The more mundane the activity the character is engaged in when you first meet them, the more powerful and deadly they will be. So, I can only conclude that Cake Monk here is made of solid rock.

~ And, with about three sentences and one prank Cake Monk has made me love and respect him. I was that easy. (Also, cake-bending? It's a thing now.)

~ So, can we all agree that the door to the central Air-bending temple was protected by ... wait for it... Airlock?

*tumbleweed blows through*

… Moving on!

~ Easy Zuko, Easy! He's not worth it, he's... Yeah. Kick the table. That showed him. *pat, pat*

~ And inside the temple there is... The Terracotta Army? Hmm. Interesting. (Although there is no bookie in the world who would take odds against one of the statues moving. Not a single one.)

~ “You were a firebender? No wonder I didn't trust you when we first met.” Suuuure, Sokka. That's why. *rolls eyes*

~ And let's see, we have a creature coming in the temple, it's clearly going to be an animal of some kind, but what? Place your bets, people, place your bets.

~ Awww. It's a monkey-rabbit-thingie. I had all my money on Stitch.

~ I don't claim to be a master hunter, Sokka, but I'm pretty sure chasing after your prey shouting “I want to eat you!” is not the way to go.

~ “And you? You're just a banished prince. No home, no allies. Your own father doesn't even want you.”

… Excuse me? Okay, you know what, Commander Sideburns? You crossed a line there. I'm not going to hold him back any more. Zuko... Give him pepper.

(Incidentally, is it bad that I like Zuko has much as I do? I'm going to suffer for this, aren't I? But I can't help it. They are setting up as a kind of genuine anti-hero. I bet he ends up being one of those characters who makes you go, “yes, yes, NO!” and “no,no, YES!” all of the time and basically turns you, (okay, okay, basically turns me,) into a basket case before all is said and done.)

~ Okay, wow, was not expecting this. (Aang seeing the skeletal body of his mentor, surrounded by the remains of many Firebenders.) It was pitched just perfectly, and showed a ton or respect for the emotional maturity of the shows audience. I really admire that. His emotional response was entirely understandable and I love that the show let the most dramatic moment in the show so far be something so emotionally resonant and not a trite combat scene. (Not that all combat scenes are trite, of course, but I'm sure you know what I mean.)

~ Oh, of course Katara is going to try and calm him down. Of course. (FEELS. I have them.)

~ And speaking of non-trite combat! I love this martial arts duel between Zuko and Commander J! The ebb and flow, was perfect. The way it showed how so much of physical combat is based on movement and balance was unexpected and delightful. And the fact that they managed to pack so many tiny yet revealing moments into the combat without sacrificing pace and impact? That's just showing off. Such an amazing show.

(Also, Zuko's, “I'm winning, aren't I?” realisation smirk, joins Damian Wayne's, “I'm Damian Wayne and you're not” grin in the glorious smugness pantheon.)

~ “So this is how the great Commander Jowl acts in defeat? Disgraceful. Even in exile, my nephew is more honourable than you.”

*moment's pause*

“Thanks again for the tea. It was delicious.”

I… I think I'm in love.

~ Zuko: *simultaneously the most vulnerable and yet most hopeful that we've ever seen him.* “Did you really mean that, Uncle?”

Uncle Iroh: “Of course. I told you ginseng tea was my favourite.”

*Zuko's only genuinely happy smile so far*

(Don't Stop. Please continue. I am but a man. My feels can only take so much.)

~ Katara: “Aang, I know you're upset-”

(Really? What was your first clue? The suddenly dark purple skies, the tornado that's shaking the mountain or the fact that he's become a glowy-eyed ball of anger and rage?)

~ Katara: “-But you still have a family, Sokka and I, we're your family now!”

Doctor, I- I think I need a feel-ectomy. *thud*

(Also, if anyone ever tells me Avatar is “just” a kid's show, I'm going to make them watch this scene, then airbend a cake into them. Fair warning, okay?)

~ Okay, my first attempt at writing something to describe the next minute of the show looked like this: “Hand holding, Sorry, Not-Needed, Tender Hugging, Feels, Pet brings food, `We're all that's left,` FEELS, `meet the newest member of our family` FEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEllllllllls.”

If I'd died at that exact moment the CSI team would have looked at my computer and concluded I had a heart attack. They wouldn't have been entirely wrong, either.

~ And we end with a shot of a pensive Aang taking one last look back at the only home he's ever known, and... I'm not sure I'm capable of coherent conversation at the moment, but I'll try. This, is a great show. A. Great. Show. I tried to dampen my expectations after all of the recommendations, couldn't, and it's still blowing them out of the water. Its not just the characterisation. It's not just the setting. It's not just the designs. It's not just the animation. It's not just the writing. It's not just that not a single moment of screen time is wasted. It's all of those things, and more, it's the nuance, it's the trust and respect the show has for it's audience, it's the FEELSFEELSFEELSOMGFEELS!!!
