Langa has been talking for hours, ranting about skating— or whatever mess that has spilled from his mind and slipped past his lips. And usually, Reki is attentive and taking in every single word (because how could you ignore anything coming from someone who looks like Langa does). This time, however, Reki cannot focus. The sunset is complimenting the cool blue of his hair in some ironic way while his eyes reflect the sky itself. Reki tries to act like he’s paying attention. He tries to act like he’s listening to a single word coming from those lips, but, oh.

Those lips.

A voice tells Reki he needs to do something. That he needs to act on whatever urge his body is pushing him to do. He can’t think. The redhead cannot think, nor can he breathe in this moment. He realizes he’s been holding his breath this whole time. Since when, he’s completely unsure, but it must’ve been forever considering how tight his chest was feeling in this very moment. He breathes in, inhaling the afternoon breeze seeping through the cracked window, along with Langa’s scent. What cologne did he use again? Or was it a body wash? These meaningless questions, an obvious cover, clouded his mind.

He takes in another sharp breath, manually having to breathe now.

Reki’s hand reaches over to lay on top of Langa’s hair. The boy stops speaking for a few seconds, locks eyes with Reki, and smiles. He continues his rant and Reki’s heart cannot help but skip a beat. A simple sign of affection, one he has shown in the past before, but this?

This is different.

Reki’s hand moves along his hair, lightly moving to just a few fingers as he places a strand of hair behind the other’s ear, mimicking the cheesy scenes he has seen in so many of the romances he had watched with Langa in the past. Reki can feel something, though unsure what, waking up inside of him. He can feel his chest getting tighter by the minute, and the hair on his arms standing up, as well as thoughts racing through his mind ten million times faster than they ever had before. This feeling scares him, but it’s there for a reason. Some reason Reki subconsciously knows about.

Langa’s lips move one last time, speaking some quiet something into the room. Reki’s eyes move back to Langa’s in a swift motion, wanting to take in every feature possible.

“Langa..?”

He stops speaking almost instantly. Which is odd because Reki spoke the name so quietly that you could barely hear it, but Langa did hear it. And for some strange, unknown reason, that makes the redhead’s heart flutter.

Now it’s silent between the two, and this suffocating, thickening tension floats around them both. As if it’s urging Reki to do something about it.

And Reki does.

It’s slow and, he could only imagine, agonizingly painful to watch from a third party perspective, but he doesn’t care. Because his eyes are closed, and the moment feels right. And he can’t back out now. Not after calling his name with such sickening sweetness.

Reki kisses him. Reki Kyan kisses Langa Hasegawa.

As everyone knows, I'm a slut for Reki and Langa being dumb boys in love who love cuddles and kisses. Absolute slut for established relationship Renga or like. Confession scenes or whatever. But pre-relationship. Pre even acknowledging the feelings, in the sense that they don't block anything. No nervous bouts that come with crushes, no gay panics. Just two besties who are maybe a little closer than strictly platonic besties should be, but it's all unconscious.

Like, They're just that comfortable with each other, giggling together like fools or stealing food off each other's plates (or Langa stealing fries from Reki and Reki getting revenge by grabbing a handful of them only to drop them when Langa tries to stop him). They're comfortable enough with each other to express their love for each other but that love isn't necessarily romantic. Do they want to spend forever together? Yeah! But does that forever necessarily mean being romantically involved? Not necessarily. They just know that their friendship is the strongest relationship they've ever had and that they adore each other.

Reki and Langa love each other and are each other's partners in everything, even if they don't really label that relationship. They just mean the world to each other. They found happiness in each other.

Now I could leave this on a QPR Renga possibility, which 10/10 I love it but also my brain is saying Matchablossom. Like. Joe and Cherry watching these two boys promising each other infinity. Watching these two boys with the most find expressions and trying to not laugh. Or at least Joe looks like that. Cherry is a little more subtle, not letting his fondness melt onto his features. He's just looking at the from the corner of his eye before looking back at Joe with fake exasperation

"Have they thought of maybe talking about what these feelings mean to them? And getting it over with already?"

"oh cmon, Kaoru. I was just as bad at their age."

And Cherry looking Joe right in the eyes like: "yeah, I know. That's why I'm saying they should just get it over with. So they don't wait almost a decade pining for each other like we did."

And Joe being caught off guard because Cherry never actually told him when he started liking him. Joe just assumed it was a more recent thing, result of growing closer in their adult years. He never thought that Cool Teen Cherry could possibly have liked him. But hearing Cherry put a number on it, it puts everything in perspective and Joe doesn't know what to do with that information

How Ep 7 Gave Us More Reasons to Hate ADAM, Beyond Being a Homewrecker: a Short Essay

Ok look, I know that we all hate ADAM for a multitude of reasons including but not limited to: driving wedge between renga, traumatizing reki, engaging in weird pedophilic bullshit with Langa, and just being a creep in general. But it's this scene from ep 7 between ADAM and Tadashi in particular that really infuriates me...

And I don't see a lot of analysis of the truly horrid implications of this scene so I’ve taken it upon myself. In this essay, I’ll dive into ADAM/Tadashi flashback scene of ep 7, exploring the dynamics of their relationship through a class lens, and demonstrating the true extent to which ADAM deserves to be shot between the eyes. Ok let’s do it.

Early on in the season, we get a clear sense of ADAM's character as pompous and condescending, if not through the way he skates but through the way he treats his secretary; he degrades Tadashi, calls him names, shows no gratitude despite Tadashi’s unfailing service and compliance.

And ADAM's abuse of Tadashi culminates in ep 7, when we learn that ADAM plans on letting Tadashi take the fall for his acts of political corruption.

But what I find truly awful is the reason why ADAM is going to let Tadashi take the fall. In ep 7, we get this flashback:

So these scenes tell us is that ADAM was first groomed by his father (then later by his aunts) to occupy some position of great influence in society, in business, in politics, or something similar. He was probably born into great wealth (since his family could afford to send him to America for school) and was expected to take up the mantel as family patriarch or something like that.

And in this scene, it’s implied that in an attempt to get ADAM to finally “grow up”, his father forces him to give up skating, trashes his board, and sends him away to America. Tadashi witnesses this, and clearly sympathizes with ADAM, but doesn't speak up for him.

And supposedly, ADAM feels so betrayed by Tadashi's silence...

...That he carries this grudge into his adult life, and it fuels his abusive behavior towards Tadashi. This is so utterly fucked up for so many reasons.

This scene takes place when ADAM was still a teenager, which means that Tadashi has served as his assistant/secretary for many, many years. I wouldn't be surprised if Tadashi's family has been serving ADAM's family for generations; Tadashi's loyalty to ADAM despite the abuse seems to imply such is the case- he has an inherited obligation to remain at ADAM's side.

But I also do think that Tadashi genuinely cares for ADAM, at least the person he used to be. If Tadashi has been tied to ADAM's family since ADAM was a teen, it's likely that they grew up together, and were probably close friends. One can imagine that ADAM often confided in Tadashi, trusted him and shared with him his love for skating. And though ADAM had skating friends like CHERRY and JOE, Tadashi would be the only one to understand the full extent of the expectations placed on ADAM to give up anything unrelated to his career and the success of his family.

My point is that Tadashi obviously feels guilty about not speaking up- its probably a big reason why he's so determined to stay by ADAM's side and why goes along with every one of ADAM’s dangerous skating (and skating related) stunts. He failed to support ADAM in the past, so he does so now. But ADAM hasn't forgiven Tadashi and never will...

Rather, ADAM’s bitterness and resentment runs so deep, he sees Tadashi as nothing but a disposable tool.

But here’s the kicker, this backstory is some great drama (and I’ve been dying to know what the whole deal with Tadashi is) but the relationship between ADAM and Tadashi tells us a lot about what kind of person ADAM is, and why we should hate him for more than just being a renga homewrecker.

If we step back for a moment and and analyze the flashback a bit more objectively (that is, without much consideration for either of these characters’ personalities) what we have is a deeply troubling power imbalance.

Fundamentally, Tadashi is ADAM’s employee, and has been for all of ADAM’s adult life. No matter how fond ADAM might have been of Tadashi in the past, the gap in their wealth and class would have prevented them from ever being equals.

Tadashi has always had more to lose than ADAM.

And this holds especially true for the events of the flashback. What ADAM expected was for a Tadashi, who at the time couldn’t have been much older than ADAM, so literally a teenager, to jeopardize his livelihood by standing up to ADAM’s father, essentially the boss of his boss, in a culture that stresses respect for your superiors above almost all else, just so his skinny privileged ass could skateboard. It’s the entitlement and sheer willful Ignorance of that sentiment that really makes my skin crawl.

And again, this office scene illustrates an earlier point I made that Tadashi always has more to lose than ADAM.

See how despite whatever trauma ADAM experienced in being made to give up skating and being sent away to America, he’s now one of the wealthiest and most influential political figures in Japan such that he has police chief in his pocket. He’s one of the greatest skaters the underground skating scene has ever witnessed and the founder of S, the most popular skating race in the region.

He hasn’t suffered one bit, yet Tadashi has lost everything.

Blackmailed and abused, a forced accomplice and fall guy for ADAM’s political corruption, Tadashi is a hostage and a victim, all because of one moment many years ago when a teenage Tadashi dared to choose self preservation over self sacrifice.

It makes me sick.

But at the same time, cheers to the writers for getting me to hate a character so singularly for so many reasons. I’m now very invested in Tadashi’s character and I so hope we get to see him team up with The Gang and the Inspector to get ADAM’s ass thrown in jail.

renga week 2021 day 7: free day

(this is very very late oop)

“I’m not going to skate against him.” Langa declared as they rode home from S.

Reki’s hands tightened around his waist. “What?”

“Adam. I’m not going to skate against him.”

“Why?” Reki asked, stunned.

Langa didn’t answer right away. Reki watched with bated breath as Langa stopped the motorcycle and chewed on his bottom lip. “...I made a promise.” He said finally.

Reki stared, shocked. “You mean your promise to me?”

Langa nodded.

“But I skated against him so it’s like hypocrisy now,” Reki said, unable to understand why Langa didn’t want to skate against Adam. He remembers his best friend telling him how it was exciting to skate against better skaters like Adam. “And besides I thought you liked skating against people like him.”

“But I promised you.”

“Yeah and I’m taking back the promise.”

“But I promised you.”

Reki sighed, exasperated. “Langa, listen I know we promised each other and all but now I am telling you I am taking it back. You can stake against him.”

“No, Reki, you listen. I promised you and then I broke that promise and I almost lost you. I don’t want to lose you again. You’re my best friend Reki.” Reki could have drowned in the fondness in Langa’s blue eyes. “You were the first person to show genuine interest in me, not just the new transfer student. You spent countless hours teaching me how to skate, and even more, patching me up. You’ve done so much for me, and you mean so much to me. I don’t want to do something that made me lose you. No matter what you say.” Langa finished.

Reki’s breath caught in his throat and all words left him. “Why do you always have so much to say that will embarrass me?” Reki asked as he covered his face with his hands.

Langa just smiled at him and started the bike back up. As they continued to make their way home Reki got lost in his thoughts.

Why is Langa so worried about losing me? Reki thought. Does he really care about me that much? A warm fuzzy feeling settled in his chest.

“Besides,” Langa said, not looking at Reki. “We’ve never seen Adam skate seriously and I have a feeling he might start after you humiliated him tonight. I’d rather not see it for the first time while going against him.” Reki hummed in agreement, arms tightening around Langa’s waist again.

“So, my dear Snow, are you ready for our beef?” Adam asked as he glided over.

“Hmm?” Langa said not looking up from where he was watching a skating video on Reki’s phone, head resting on said skater's shoulder.

“Our beef, my Eve, are you ready for it? For the passionate raw emotions achieved in only a ritual of love like this.” Adam said, pulling a single blue rose from behind his cape and leaning with his hand out, waiting for Langa to take the rose.

“Oh that. Right, I’m forfeiting.” Langa said, eyeing the rose for a second before looking back at the video.

“You’re what?” Adam said, breathless and confused. “You can't do that. You can't! You’re my Eve! The only skater on my level! You have to skate against me! It was meant to be!” Adam yelled, like a child who was denied candy by their mother in the store.

“Yeah, sorry I'm not your Eve,” Langa said, eyeing the rose again. “Whatever that is.” Reki glanced up from the video to laugh at Adam’s pain.

“Can I have that?” Langa asked, pointing to the rose.

“I- what. Well, of course, Snow. it is a gift for you after all.” Adam said venomously.

“Cool, thanks,” Langa said, plucking the rose from Adam’s hand. “Hey, Reki?”

“Yeah Langa?” Reki said, turning off his phone and looking at Langa.

“This is for you.” In Langa’s outstretched hand lay the blue rose.

Reki’s face darkened as a blush spread across his face like wildfire.

“L-Langa!” blurted the flustered redhead.

“Yes, Reki?” Langa asked, a blush decorating his face too.

“You can't do that in public! It's so embarrassing, I think I'll dieeee.” Reki said laughing as his face burned and his heart hammered in his chest. Hiding his face in his hands Reki tried to block out Miya’s laughter in the background.

“Ah, sorry Reki, that was not my intention,” Langa said, hand holding the rose dropping.

“No no it's ok just...give a guy a warning next time?” Reki asked, smiling as he removed his hands from his face. Langa smiled and nodded.

Reki’s hand dropped and grabbed onto Langa’s wrist. His other hand carefully took the flower.

“Hmm blue, just like your hair,” Reki said laughing as he smelled the flower. “Ooh, vanilla. How does a flower smell like vanilla anyways?”

“I'm not sure. Hey Adam how does the flower smell like vanilla?” Langa asked, looking up at the stunned man, who had not moved for the past few minutes.

“I- it wait, what? Why did you give him your flower Snow?” Adam asked, staring at the teens incredulously.

“If you're going to be my flower dealer, I’d at least like you to know something about flowers. I can't be giving my boyfriend something poisonous.”

“Flower dealer? Boyfr-?” Adams' protests were cut off by Shadow smalling into him.

“That flower was from my shop thank you very much! He is not your florist, come to me for your damned flowers! Also flower dealers? Really Langa?” Shadow said, ignoring the shouts of Adam, who he had shoved to the ground.

“Wow, so you slimes finally admitted your feelings. I’m surprised, I thought it would take longer.” Miya said sliding up next to Shadow.

“Dammit, I owe Kaoru money now,” Joe said as he got there.

“Yes, hand it over you gorilla,” Cherry said as he walked up behind Joe.

“Shut it four-eyes.”

“Oh, you shut it you-”

As those two began to argue Reki looked at Langa and laughed. Langa smiled in return. Reki squeezed Langa’s hand and tucked the flower behind his boyfriend’s ear.

“It looks better on you,” Reki said, leaning in to murmur in Langa’s ear.

Langa’s smile grew and he leaned in and pressed a kiss to Reki’s temple.

As the fans of S screamed and cheered about all the good skaters being in one spot and Adam getting humiliated again, Reki and Langa didn't pay them any mind, for they were in their own world. Just the two of them.

“What. The. Actual. Fu-” seethed Adam from where he lay in the dirt before his voice was overtaken by the skaters cheering about Reki challenging Snow to a beef.

An AU where Tenko Shimura was found by Inko Midoriya instead of AFO and raised as Izuku's brother. He winds up becoming Hawks's secretary, meets All Might and learns about his grandmother, and gets to proudly watch his brother follow his dreams. Things start to change when he meets a strange man outside of a cafe and falls for him. How was he supposed to know that Dabi was a villain!? From there, Tenko has to do a lot of self reflection and decide what he wants to do after learning about his boyfriend's identity, especially when he found out that his boss had known all along. Does he chase after Dabi? Join him? Turn him in? I'm not 100% sure how I want to end this, but I am tempted for it to lead to the "birth" of Tomura. Any suggestions would be welcome!

Essentially an AFO origin story focusing on his relationship with Yoichi over the course of his descent. I take a few snapshots of the brothers together, starting as teens and going through to his death, and showing how their regard for each other changed. It finally ends with AFO speaking to Yoichi's grave years later. I'm a fan of DFO, so I'm going to be using the name Hisashi for him, but if/when his canon name comes out, I'll be changing it to match!

An AU where Roger Ruvie dies early on in the investigation and, with the entire world under suspicion, L can't afford to replace him. Instead, he sends the majority of the kids off to other houses that Watari had built, save for his top three successors. Near, Mello, and Matt all move into the Task Force HQ and, despite L's "best efforts" to prevent it (read: he's totally just pretending to stop them to please the others), they continually find themselves thrown in the middle of the investigation. I'm also not 100% certain how I want this to end, but I do know that it's going to be endgame L/Light and Matt/Mello.

A sequel to Unstoppable Force. I've had a few people express interest in the culprit, so I've decided to write up an optional sequal that explains it. I debated not doing it, but I know that a lot of people enjoy closure, so I thought it would be fun! I invented a new villain and a new ability and I found an excuse to drag some Guild members into it as well. Essentially, Ranpo reopens the case after the funeral and uses the strange behavior of Steinbeck to corner and catch the elusive ability user. I'm personally proud of the ability I created, so I'm going to keep it a secret for now.

This one is actually based on a post that has since been deleted proposing the idea of a soulmate AU where the name of your soulmate is written on the inside of your book in the Four O'clock Library. I shook it up a bit and added the idea that if you read your soulmate's name, people will begin to forget they exist and you have to confess your love to them within a week or they will disappear from existence entirely. Akane didn't think it would be a problem to go and confirm his soulmate-- it's obviously Aoi-- only to discover a very different name written in his book. Knowing his time limit, he struggles to find a loophole in the curse that would help him avoid confessing a love he doesn't feel. In the meantime, people are slowly starting to forget who Teru Minamoto is, with Akane being the only one to remember, forcing them to spend even more time together. This one is going to have a happy ending, but it's going to be a really close call!

This is a sequel to Lovely that I've been playing around with. Someone expressed that they wanted to see how Robby's father would react to their situation and that got me thinking about it. In a misguided gesture of good faith, Hatchi's parents invite Robby's family up to the moon to help celebrate either his birthday or their first anniversary. Much to Robby's surprise, they agree to come, leaving him with an awkward mess of judgement to deal with until they leave. I still haven't decided how this will end, but I know it's going to be on either a positive or bittersweet note.

Sequel to Purpose. Kurogiri and Tomura move in with that kind hero, Aizawa, after what happened in the alleyway. Kurogiri juggles working to obtain his hero license with raising Tomura (made easier with the new help) and investigates just why that hero seemed so familiar... Later on, when Tomura enters UA, he juggles making friends for the first time, proving his heroism despite his quirk, and a concerning new crush on the hot upperclassman.

It's just a collection of seven mini-stories that are all collected throughout the span of one week in-universe. Everyone is going to give Joe a visit for different reasons and I'm excited to see how it turns out!

A fantasy AU in which Fukuzawa and Mori are the kings of two rival kingdoms, Ada and the Port Kingdom (I'll probably change the names lol). Fukuzawa has no genetic heirs, but he had taken in a number of wards, one of which will be chosen to succeed him. Mori has two children, and the prince was born with a terrible curse that leaves his reputation soaked in blood. Atsushi, one of Fukuzawa's wards, is also cursed and feels that Prince Ryuunosuke is just like him; that he can be saved with some kindness and compassion. Despite being warned not to, he sneaks out and attends a ball intended to find the prince a suitor. While there, he unknowingly defends the prince from a number of attackers, which, while unnecessary, piques Ryuunosuke's interest. The two run away together, but wind up being sidetracked by an advancing enemy and wind up lost. Chuuya, a knight from the PK, is sent by Mori to go and find his son. Dazai, Atsushi's mentor and ward of Fukuzawa, is sent to go and locate the weretiger after he does not come to breakfast in the morning. Chuuya and Dazai run into each other while searching for their respective people, which leads to them teaming up to find them while Atsushi and Ryuunosuke are trying their hardest not to be found.

Chapter 1 of the 2-part Renga fic.

Langa didn’t know when he fell.

From the day he first met Reki, he thought him a star, shining brighter than the sun. Each day he spent with him, that dark feeling that had gnawed mercilessly on his heart since his dads death, that feeling of falling into an endless abyss, gradually went away. Replaced by something warm and bright.

Reki taught him to have fun again. He had helped Langa to finally start moving on. All without asking, without expecting anything in return.

Reki gave him so much, so much more than Langa thought the other boy knew.

Langa truly didn’t know when he fell. He only knew he had even fallen when he finally made impact.

It had been the night of his beef with Miya, right after it had finished. Langa had won—a victory he would have never had if not for the genius board that Reki had made just for him. No, he would have had no hope of ever beating a future pro like Miya if not for Reki.

Miya hadn’t taken the loss well, though, not at all, and Reki being Reki, well…

He made everything better. He restored Miya’s shattered confidence and when it would have been easy for the younger boy to declare them enemies, eternal rivals, cry out that he’d win the next beef and despise the two teens, instead Reki had forged a friendship between them.

All Langa knew was that Reki had shined brighter than any star as he hooked an arm around a flustered Miya’s shoulders, smiling and laughing, looking wonderful and beautiful and—

Oh.

“I know that look,” Joe said softly, and Langa wasn’t sure where he had come from, though he easily recognized him as one of the elite skaters Reki had pointed out. The large man had a gentle, knowing smile on his face as he looked at Langa and then to Reki.

The crowds had begun shifting their attention from Reki and Miya to Langa and Joe, perhaps having grown tired of Reki joking and playing around, or perhaps drawn in like moths to a flame when they realized that Joe was there. Noticing the eyes, Joe’s smile grew and he laughed loudly, smacking Langa on the back hard enough to almost knock him over. “Congrats on the win, Snow. That was pretty tight.”

Langa felt his face warm up, but smiled, embarrassed and shy as it was, “Ah, thanks,” he said softly, and that smile grew as his eyes met Reki’s, who was quick to move on from Miya to latch onto Langa, praising his skating and agreeing with Joe. Telling Langa that he had been awesome in the beef.

His heart was beating fast, faster even now, and Langa knew it was more from Reki than any remaining adrenaline.

Joe smiled at Langa again, that ‘I know’ look on his face as he began to walk away, leaving them be. Langa saw his expression change into a warm, soft, loving expression as he walked over to a pink haired man—one who Langa remembered seeing during his beef against Shadow, who he was also certain he had tried applying to work for but was rejected. ‘I know’ Langa thought as he saw the two adults share a look.

Those two soon ceased to matter, however, as Langa’s focus zeroed in entirely on Reki and only Reki. Reki who was pressed close to Langa with an arm wrapped around him in a side hug, making Langa’s face feel warm in the night air and hist stomach do more flips than he had done on the track.

“Come on, man. We got to go celebrate,” Reki declared, not letting go of Langa—not that Langa wanted him to. “I know this great ramen shop that’s still open this late that we can go to, my treat! You too, Miya, you’re joining us!”

Miya spluttered out some indignant response, but he didn’t refuse.

Butterflies filled his stomach, warmth radiated in his chest. Langa looked at the shining light beside him and could do little more than to smile back. “Sure.”

The first hurdle was seeing Kaoru hit.

The second, seeing him immobile and unconscious.

The third, getting him to the hospital.

The wait.

The doctor or nurse’s serious lecture about moving TBI or neck injury patients.

Not being allowed in because the family rule or sanitation bullshit; Kaoru hauled into surgery.

Seeing Kaoru tied up to a bed like he was already fucking dead.

The pit in Kojiro’s own stomach and that feeling like he’d sunk to the bottom of the sea in a poorly maintained submarine.

And the possibly worst—but that would require ranking all the shit-ness—Kaoru didn’t have family. Not any that would care enough. That was why the two were so close, why the Nanjos considered Kaoru one of them to begin with.

“Are you family?” Some new person asked.

Kojiro shot to his feet, pleading with a cracked voice, “I’m his partner!”
