Rajvinder Kaur and her husband Randhir Singh are spending what could be their last few weeks in Canada, fighting their imminent deportation back to India.

Their demand for refugee status was rejected despite claims they are the victims of political violence in their native Punjab region in northern India.

"We've been through a nightmare in India, including the arrest and torture of my husband," explains Kaur, a former village chief in a region where ethnic tensions between Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs are common.

Kaur says he was arrested and tortured by internal security police on suspicions he offered shelter to radicalized Sikhs seeking independence in the disputed region that straddles the Indian and Pakistani border.

It doesn't make a lick of sense to me that countries are restricting or outright rejecting Russian civilians fleeing the draft, and citing the war in Ukraine as justification.

The more people fleeing the draft are less soldiers fighting in the war. The less people in Russia total is less tax money funding the war. The world should be welcoming Russian draft dodgers, not punishing them for a war they don't even want to fight in.

Thousands of migrants and their supporters held rallies across Canadian cities on Sunday to call on Ottawa to extend permanent status to undocumented people.

There were also calls to swiftly implement an inclusive regularization program for undocumented migrants — a longstanding demand that advocates say appears closer than ever to becoming a reality based on recent moves by the federal Liberal government.

Syed Hussan, executive director of the Migrant Workers Alliance for Change, said it's an opportune moment for Ottawa to listen to his group's calls for more access to basic rights for undocumented people in Canada.

"We have a historic opportunity right now to fix a wrong that has been going on for many, many years," he said by phone before heading to a planned afternoon rally in Toronto.

"We want to make sure that parliament does not in any way delay."
