spoiler free red rose review:

as aforementioned pretty little liars is my comfort show and this is basically that with more diversity and less makeup. (less pretty. less lying too come to think) and they all live in bolton (oop north. lots of planets have a north) and I love the way they talk.

love stories about how utterly insane it is to be a teen. how as a teen you always always have so much shit going on that makes you feel batshit crazy and completely alone. and how you desperately need your friends to be on board, to go with you into the darkest places so you're not there alone. so you know more is seen and known of you than the surface stuff most people see (as they try to control you, or sneer and write you off)...

but you're also so afraid of infecting your friends and dragging them down with you. or that they'll cut you loose to save themselves and you'll be more alone than ever.

this is a story about all that. I like all that a lot.

it's also about families, and how they can and can't help you. how they try to love you, and sometimes get it wrong, and sometimes get it right in ways you can't see yet because you're a kid and you're crazy with being a kid. how they can become a liability at the moment you trusted them most, and a haven at the moment you were ready to run away forever. how they are the weight that holds you down and holds you back, and the costs of cutting that tie, and how you can and can't go back afterwards.

without spoiling anything about the solution to the main mystery it's definitely the weakest and dumbest aspect of the show. the love is the good part and it's whenever love takes center stage that the show is good. and that is a lot. friend love. family love. complicated love. love that pulls at you when you're drowning and you don't know which way is up, whether you're being saved or dragged to the depths. you just hold your breath and decide what to hold on to.

overall I liked it! very talented young actors as well. and these clarkson twins also wrote the episode of haunting of bly manor with hannah and the cracks in the wall! ones to watch

I started watching the horror series Red Rose on Netflix last night, and it's pretty good! Only halfway through, but I like the concept, the setting, and the characters. Horror based around technology (think Black Mirror) is not my most usual subgenre, but I'm enjoying it here.

A couple familiar faces in the cast for me & those who've shared my fandoms: Isis Hainsworth (season 2 of Harlots) and, of course, Adam Nagaitis of The Terror and Chernobyl fame. Adam's part is fairly small so far, but his hair is nice (I like long hair on boys) and it was a fun surprise to see him in any case, since I was just browsing Netflix and started watching the show without having heard anything about it.

Anyway, I've still got several episodes to go, but I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out!

Spoilers for Red Rose on Netflix

Why does it not surprise me that the whole Red Rose thing started with 1 guy who was madly in love with a girl and couldn’t handle a no? 

‘I really like you.’  DUDE! You don’t even know her?! You just stared at her from afar and then made a creepy app to ask her question that you were too afraid to ask face to face! 

And then when you got a no you still didn’t understand why and asked ‘what you’d done wrong’? DUDE, nothing! (Except for the fact that you build a whole arse app to ask her question you were too afraid to ask face to face) 

Sometimes people aren’t into you and they don’t need to give you a 3 pages dissertation explaining why. 

AND THEN you go and hand over control of your program to a stranger and somehow are surprised that they use it for spying on people. DUDE, you wrote the damn thing and because you wanted to show how cool and tough you are to you internet ‘buddies’ you remade it so it had control of all her files, all her data, everything that was connected to the damn internet! 

Seriously, if you’d just done the normal thing and gone and talked to her, maybe asked a question about homework, then none of this shit would have happened. You fucking idiot.
