My interpretation of Buddha’s character in Record of Ragnarok

We don’t know what the real Buddha was like, but we have a certain idea: kind, compassionate, intelligent, generous, resolute, open, endlessly loving and he abandoned hatred, jealousy, lust, pride, greed, violence and ignorance. In my opinion Buddha in Record of Ragnarok isn’t so different from how we imagine the historical Buddha to be. Let me explain, but keep in mind that it’s just my own interpretation of this fictional character.

I want to talk about the most shocking things: hatred against the gods, violence and malicious joy over their suffering.

Does he really hate them and enjoys their suffering like we could understand the meaning of these words he says himself? No! It’s easy to get that idea, when you just look at him without any sense of interpretation. The base for this character is the real Buddha and sure, the creators have made him their own character in a way. But if we look closely, the real Buddha constantly shines through. It’s all about interpretation – really.

It looks like he hates the gods and is happy about their suffering. He says that. Why? Because that’s what they believe in… and what they want to believe in. It’s not his task to change other’s opinion about him. He leaves it all to them. It’s more like he is giving them a lesson without giving a lesson. Your thoughts create your reality – that’s what the real Buddha said. It’s not Buddha’s style to teach someone, who doesn’t want to learn. But this way he can make a statement. Basically he chooses to mirror their behavior to show how pointless it is and he can still be himself doing so.

The gods are basically like humans, but they behave like they are better beings and have the right to be cruel – a typical human behavior. They are too proud to admit their weakness and to learn – also very human. They have the chance to change and be better, but they choose being unhappy and arrogant and harm themselves and others – VERY HUMAN! And still they thing they are better. Of course, you can’t teach them. Buddha knows that. Maybe he can talk like from soul to soul with a human or demigod, but not with the prideful gods. THIS must be very entertaining to him. The great gods are just poor creatures and they don’t want to see it.

The interesting thing is Buddha’s behavior towards them, the way he looks at them, the way he talks to them. He is always calm, confident, peaceful, but also mocking and no one is allowed to push him around. He shows openly his disapproval for their behavior, not for them as beings in the first place. He doesn’t make a difference between creatures AND THIS IS WHAT THE GODS INTERPRET AS DISRESPECT AND HATRED TOWARDS THEM. They feel attacked and hurt in their pride that his former human MADE HIMSELF A GOD, COMES TO HEAVEN LIKE IT’S HIS PLACE AND DOESN’T CARE ABOUT AUTHORITY.

The gods say: “He has to respect for us as higher beings and he teaches humans that they don’t need gods… He hates us so we hate him, too. We’ll humble him!”

Buddha says: “You know what I’m teaching and you choose to interpret it this way. Fine. Your thought will become your reality. You know where you can find me, when you actually want to learn. You have no power over me.”

So the Gods are the ones being humbled. That must hurt.

But look at Buddha! Where is the hatred? It doesn’t come from him. It’s just his disapproval and going a personal and peaceful way in front of triggered creatures. His eyes aren’t burning with hatred and his speech isn’t toxic and hateful. This “malicious joy” over the gods’ suffering isn’t malicious or hateful. It’s more like enjoying the fact that someone is getting a lesson and still doesn’t get it. Like watching a fly hitting the window trying to get out, but the fly is calling itself a god. Of course, the gods want to see the hatred in it, but Buddha’s actions just say: “You still don’t get it.” He’s still calm, understanding, observing and lovingly neutral with a huge dose of mocking and teasing humor (if you get what I mean).

The same with violence – there is no hatred in it. The only point it that you can call it very controversial for someone like Buddha, but all the violence is a reflection of the attacking person. When words don’t work, dodging isn’t enough and he wants to protect himself or others, he must defend himself. That’s what he does. His intention is to make clear that it’s no use to try this on him. Killing is not the intention, but… if there is no other way, he is ready to do it to protect. That’s what we see in his fight. Buddha says that he is ready to kill any god who will get in his way, but it doesn’t mean that he wants to do it when there’s another way. It’s not the result of hatred. It’s the result of a limitless love towards ALL.

Even the awakening hatred or anger in him during the fight isn’t a toxic one. He takes, understands and overcomes it and this makes him even stronger. It becomes a tool. Here is nothing left of hatred after the fight. Maybe it’s not even there anymore during his win.

Our Buddha doesn’t force anyone into his heart, but he also doesn’t close it. He leaves it open to everyone who wants to come in. It doesn’t matter who you are and what you have done. You are just a soul like everyone else in the first place, even as a god or demon – you are welcome to come in. Just look at his body language and listen to him. He isn’t only relaxed, he is OPEN. The gods are not excluded, but they want to be. It’s much easier than overcome pride and prejudge.

Maybe you can interpret it this way, if you have an idea about the real Buddha and his wisdom and lessons. Even though this character is a fictional creation, you can’t deny that the essence of the real Buddha is very visible, if you just look closer. The authors change everything more or less or interpret differently, but they still capture what’s important and special. I don’t think that we should ignore the real Buddha, if we want to understand Buddha in Record of Ragnarok – especially when a character has so much space for interpretation and such a strong, meaningful and beautiful base (the real Buddha). It’s important to see all the little parts separately and also everything as s whole – his words, not mine.

By the way, not only the gods think that Buddha hates them… The same misunderstanding was with Adam. He didn’t fight because he hated the gods. It was out of love for his children, for humanity. Others simply thought it was out of hatred and learned the truth later.

Anyway, it’s very refreshing to see a cheeky and mocking Buddha, who enjoys candy, has a great style, makes fun of the gods and treats everything with humor and love. I’m also sure that it wasn’t needed to trick him into helping humanity. He’d do it himself. Not because he hates the gods, but because he loves all beings and humanity needs protection. A great chance to humble the gods more and more. This is also love. Love isn’t always about being soft and sweet. Sometimes you must be strict and hard.

So the recent record of ragnarok chapter has made me… question some things. Starting off, somehow the loki part wasn’t what made me go crazy. It was the fact that beelezub full on mentioned a fucking primordial god who created the universe. With the fact abrahamic religions have already gotten some representation and other living religions like Buddhism and Hinduism have major gods be part of the story. I have two ideas, one is that I think this primordial god is literally the Demiurge from Gnosticism. The demiurge is already a very common thing in Japanese media, and it fits perfectly with Record Of Ragnarok. But I don’t think it’s going to be so simple. Another idea I have is that’s it’s Baldur, a Norse god who we’ve heard literally nothing about although he’s kinda a big deal in Norse mythology and Ragnarok specifically. Also Buddha says to Odin that ragnarok is Orin’s plan. Which is very important since in Norse myth, baldur would be revived by the end of ragnarok and who also was told something by Odin as he died. This is extremely interesting for the story. But I could be wrong. And honestly I hope so.

The Gods suffer - Thoughts about Record of Ragnarok and Loki

Thank you @hanaiikiki for uploading this picture. It made me want to share some thoughts.

Looks like he is used to rejection and still can't accept it. He wants to make it work finally, because love has never worked out for him before. It's like he hopes that finding love is the only way for him to feel accepted and wanted. He wants to have someone who he can be himself with. Apparently he is too scared to let his guard down around his friends and it's a general problem for the Gods.

Loki must carry a lot sadness and trauma, that he closed his heart so much. He has friends and still feels lonely, because he can't allow himself to open up to them. He doesn't trust even those who he loves. That's totally unhealthy. Finding love - ONE PERSON - who understands and accepts him must be his only hope to be happy and to heal his heart. He can't count on his friends, because they all have the same problem.

That's how I understand his obsession with Brunhilde. He doesn't want to give up, because it would feel like giving up on love and hope in general.

The Gods suffer. Look at Ares. At least he cried openly. But no one could go to him and simply hug and comfort him. Would it be weakness to do so? Would it put shame on Ares to treat him like someone weak? Maybe both is the case. But the fact is, that Loki really looked like he wanted to hold him tight and show some emotions... and couldn't. He couldn't show some love for his friend. Hermes couldn't comfort his brother. Zeus couldn't. Even after losing two beloved brothers and his adoptive son he couldn't mourn. We didn't see him allowing himself to be sad even in private.

The Gods have some huge problems in their society and we can it compare to toxic masculinity or the facade of aristocrats in our reality. Poor Loki wants to find a way to deal with it. It's no surprise that you can go crazy from that. He is under pressure and there is no escape. No, he has to deal with it by himself, just like the others. And judging from mythology he can do his best and society still doesn't accept him. So playing the role of the clown is the best way to get away with being the outsider. He tries to survive, even if he too proud to admit it to himself.

I remember what Poseidon said about what it means to be a God... I must say that it is a very sad existence. Sasaki was right about that. Sorry, I repeat a lot for sure. This is just my interpretation, also based on my own life experiences.

My theory for Loki from Record of Ragnarok

Gonna preface by saying parts of this are based on my interpretations of the myths and the versions of them that I’ve seen

He’s a traitor to the gods but not because he believes humanity should live

It was stated in the first fight that Thor killed Jormungandr, one of Loki’s children and in the original prophecy of Ragnarok the one to kill Thor via his poison (although the poison only really kicked in after Thor killed him)

Fenrir is another child of Loki and even gave him some grandchildren in Skoll and Hati, but in RoR it’s possible they’ve already been killed by the respective gods they were going to kill in the original prophecy for Ragnarok

Skoll and Hati were supposed to eat the sun and moon respectively, and there are gods for the sun and moon in Norse mythology (Sol and Mani)

Fenrir was supposed to kill Odin

But given the fact that Ragnarok is so clearly different from the original myths in RoR, it is entirely possible that they are dead

There’s also Hel, Loki’s daughter who in Norse mythology ruled over Helheim yet in RoR is nowhere to be seen

Loki in the myths cared deeply for his family, to the point he got Odin’s own son Baldr killed for the imprisonment of Fenrir (in some interpretations of the myth) (Baldr is also the father of Forseti who we have seen)

But if the Loki in RoR lost his family already, his children, if we go off the myths, would destroy the gods without a second thought

But he couldn’t let them know that so he plays the part of loyalty, playing nice with the gods and even playing upset when a god dies. He took advantage of Buddha’s betrayal to further trick the gods he was loyal. I don’t know what exactly he will do, but it may be to kill Odin, the Supreme Norse God.

Will he do this by throwing his fight and giving humanity a win to ensure Odin fights? Possibly

Will he win his fight to ensure Odin fights of Humanity is in the lead? Also possible

With the score currently being four to four I can’t quite tell

But Loki is a traitor to the gods so he may avenge his children and possibly even grandchildren. That’s my theory, let me know what you think

Random as hell Record of Ragnarok theory that just came to me. Remember in fight 5 when Loki and the Lucky Gods were gearing up to fight Buddha's crew, and during the scuffle this happens?

These weird Chain/Scythe blades are obviously gonna be Loki's weapon... but that has me thinking about WHY Loki would use them as a weapon. Like, they're cool and I think they're neat as hell, but it just wasn't the first thought I would have thinking of a weapon for him.

But then I remembered a very IMPORTANT set of chains from Norse Mythology... the chains used to bound Fenrir, the wolf of Ragnarok and child of Loki. Maybe there's a connection there? Given how the chains were crafted from "impossible" occult concepts, it'd be REALLY cool to see a weapon possibly based on it.

Also, calling it now, Loki's technique names are gonna be named after his kids.

This went a little messy, still I did my best! The song was really interesting, I loved the rhythm! And it brought me a really interesting idea!

You always loved to learn, science is something that had always amused you and you wanted to be able to enter on this magnificent world and work on all kind of studies, that is why when the the opportunity presented itself do not think twice before accepting, however nothing prepared you for what you will face with Nikola Tesla

You knew he was consider a pretty crazy man but you never thought he will be that crazy, you admire his work, you really do but you can't just understand how he can be so innocent and selfless at times, always with a smile in his face and working with an inmense passion. You admire him but don't understand him

Having the opportunity to work with him wasn't difficult, what were difficult was to actually start working, since Tesla is always so pasionate with his work and is used to work alone he almost always forgot to give you something to do, and even when you call him out for it he just apologize with a smile. At first you tried to be polite and remind him that you are here to work with him but soon you lost your patience and start talk to him irritated, telling him that you want to work and learn too, and no matter how you say it to him he never lose his smile

As irritating it can be you were learning a lot, Tesla is always explaining out loud what he is doing or all his new plans for you to be able to follow him on the project, always willing to answer every one of your question, even if that means explain the complete function and theory behind each project, it was amusing how dedicated he is on his work and on teaching you everything he knows but at the same time he has being idiotic for sharing his work so easily, someone can just steal it from him, but when you point it out he just laugh at the posibility, not with arrongance, Tesla find it pretty funny since he believe from the bottom of his heart that knowledge must be shared and science exist to help humanity improve, you really don't understand him, is really okay with the posibility of someone stealing something for what he has been working so hard?

As time pass you had learn enough to start helping him more in the projects, starting to help him while making the theory and planning how you two could make it happen, but you two constantly argue by it since while you try to keeping your feet on the ground and think in all kind of posibilities that you sure you could make work Tesla's mind goes wild and thinks in posibilities that sounds imposible before even trying to think how it could work (and yet, for him it always make perfect sense), you always got mad at him for doing it and ask him to be serious but he reasure you with a big and proud smile that he never jokes when it comes to science

It had been some times where you can tell that there are some errores or big posibilities of failure with the progress of a project, and while you try to find a logic solution to it Tesla seem to be three steps forward and has one more of his strange solution, other time he just continue with the project and end up failing, like you tried to warn him, even making clear that you already told him that it will happen and yet Tesla never seem to be truly frustrated or irritated by failures, he just stand up and wins even more motivation to continue working, you don't understand how he does it

You don't understand him, you don't know how he does it, how is posible that this man always carries a big and bright smile on his face, while you worry about things not working he just decided to search for another way to do it, when you feel like everything will go bad he has confidence on his projects, when a project fails you repeat to yourself over and over again how you knew this would happen or how you didn't prevent it while Tesla is winning more determination and motivation to continue, while you take science with an inmense seriousness and dedicaron Tesla always goes to his study with a big smile and inmense passion

You don't understand him and that frustrated you a lot, is there something wrong with you? is there something wrong with him? is that you should be more like him? is he just crazy like everyone thinks? is that you were expecting too much from science? were you expecting too much from him? You truly don't understand

Your irritation and frustration grows more and more until it start to mess up your work, you were so troubled that started to worry Tesla so he decided to take you on a break, he wanted to help you relax and distract yourself so he takes you out of the study, but you were hesitant, why you should go out when the important is in the study?

When he finally manage to get you out of the study he just take you to different places to help you distract yourself, to just enjoy the moment without worring about the projects, but you still don't understand why he is doing all of this!

After a long time of trying to relax Tesla finally talks about the work again, he tells you that he is working on the science because is something that had always amused him, he does it because he wants to see humanity improve, he wants to make everyone smile with his creations... and that includes you, he want to be able to make you smile with the science you love so much

You don't understand his reasoning and yet you can't help but feel flattered by his words, you have being so busy taking too serious science that you had forgotten about your love for science

You don't understand him and sometimes thinks that he is just a crazy man with his head in the clouds, but you were sure that you won't change him for anyone else in the world

So yea, Pimon is actually about 300 years old… WOW. I genuinely thought he was like 70 before I started theorizing about him at all…

So, chance is he probably has the same condition as Arthur, which means he’s mostly unaffected by age, has inhumane/Lu bu levels of strength, and probably has the soul eye much like Jack and Arthur (and to think I thought it was Morton that had the soul eye…)

Also, given one of the conditions symptoms is being mostly unaffected by age, and Arthur seems like he’s in his 20’s, Pimon is probably much much older than Arthur…

Is Arthur in his 90s??? We might never know

Theory 2: BOOBS????

hi sleepless.!!!!! I was wondering if you had any theories on surtalogi & vedrfolnir’e identities? since going off etymology , we can only assume they’re from or connected khaneri’ah in some way,, 💜

OK OK heres a not so intellectual brainstorming (key word: BRAINSTORMING. THIS IS PURELY BRAINSTORMING so if you see me say something then contradict it in the same sentence dont be surprised). So about surtalogi

The actual norse mythology surtalogi is a flaming sword surtr used in the ragnarok which he will use to fight the gods and the flame from said sword will eventually burn down the whole world. Which has lead a lot of people to believe he might be dainsleif (yknow since they're both swords) but I personally dont think that that is the case for a few reasons:

1- skirk refers to surtalogi in the same light as rhinedottir, so we can assume he does something like her.

2- in some sources surtalogi is the fire itself not the sword so its kinda hit or miss

3- surtalogi is waist deep in abyssal power which we know dain is not the most fond of.

4: dainsleif and surtalogi are two seperate swords?? so this for me is kinda like saying durin and dvalin are the same because they're both dwarves in norse mythology.

Again I havent deep dived into this theory so let me know if im missing some additional information but I feel like trying to attach him to a pure blood khaenriahn we already know seems kinda easy (yes the "we need more khaenriah characters agenda")

Where I think we should really be looking to try to figure out surtalogi's identity isn't surtalogi itself but surtr. NOW, NOW LET ME COOK.

Surtr was a fire giant who ruled muspelheim (the fire realm in norse mythology) and lead the fire giants in a battle against the gods during ragnorok, eventually ending the world with his fire. Now surtr is also one of the primordial giants.

what do we associate dragons with? Fire. Battle with the gods? Dragon sovereigns. Primordial giants? Again, dragon sovereigns. It seems so perfect except this would be contradicting my own theory of irmin and nibelung being the same since irmin=odin and surtr is way older than odin. Also another thing: hoyo usually likes to name dragons after dwarves in norse mythology. In fact nibelung himself is a dwarf. Would it be symbolism for them to also use a giant for his refrence or would it be disqualifying this possibility?

Also its worth keeping in mind that in mythology, at the end of ragnarok surtr successfully defeated all the gods and burned down the world, which obviously did not happen with the sovereigns.

HOWEVER. the whole theme of burning down the old world to let a new, better world be born from the ashes very much reminds me of fatui shit, and more importantly PYRO ABYSS LECTOR VOICELINES.

So if nothing else we can say for certain that surtalogi is very much khaenri'ahn ideology. Its just very intresting how the character is specifically THE FIRE THAT BURNS THE WORLD not the WEILDER OF IT. maybe he had a hand in the catacalysm? IDK I NEED TO ORGANIZE MY THOUGHTS

Key points to keep in mind: 1) pay attention to surtr not surtalogi 2) surtalogi is the weapon not the culprit

NOW vedrfolnir. We literally only have a name. No i dont mean in genshin in mythology itself as well. There is barely anything. All we know is that vedrfolnir is a hawk who sits between the eyes of an eagle perched on top of yggdrasil (who is also unnamed btw)

One particular thing though is that the translations of the name often have something to do with wind. Immidietly I wanna associate this with istaroth which would kinda make sense since vedrfolnir is on top of yggdrasil (irminsul) and istaroth is the god of time irminsul records all events in time past present AND future since the fruits are irminsul contain people's fates etc etc

But then would hoyo really namedrop a primordial shade in the same sentence with two abyss power abusing sinners? Seems somewhat unlikely even with the sinshades theories+ the timeline doesnt add up+ its like two diffrent lore topics entirely. It doesnt help that theres literally nothing about the eagle either so if I have some scrambles thoughts for surtalogi for vedrfolnir I literally have no idea. But I do think two keypoints (only points i mean) to keep in mind are 1) irminsul association 2) wind themed name
