Remus’s soulmates, of course, are the Marauders. They are his closest confidants, brothers closer than blood, young men he would entrust with his life. Despite the war looming on the horizon, they’ve still managed to retain much of their innocence. Mischief runs rampant with all four of them, and there’s seldom a time you’ll find them doing absolutely nothing together. Their fun loving spirits always pulls them into rather wild situations – just take a look at their Marauder Code. Half of the outlandish rules on there are made for a reason. It’s difficult to quantify everyone’s positions in the group, since at this point they’ve become so close that they borrow much of each other’s personality traits. Yet there are a few trends that are easily distinguished: James usually takes the lead, Peter never fails to add in perfectly-timed dry quips, Sirius brings a wild sense of fun and Remus acts as the conscience. This, of course, is just skimming the surface of their dynamic – all four boys have a much deeper bond than simply superficial aspects of their character, and their roots go deeper still.

On more general #squad level, however, Remus hangs out with the Gryffindor Sixth Years. The Marauders frequently hang around the Gryff Girl Squad of Marlene, Mary and Lily, and the seven of them have become an inseparable friend group that hang around each other constantly – whether it’s during Hogsmeade weekends, between classes, or during summer vacation. The Girls are the first people the Marauders go to when asking someone to join them on an adventure, many nights spent watching the stars on the Astronomy Tower, out skipping rocks by the lake, or playing silly games like Truth or Dare in the Common Room. Each person has a unique relationship with the other six, but there are a few more obvious relationships. Combined with James and Sirius, Marlene can make for a rather formidable force. ( No one ever picks dare when the two of them are both playing. ) Mary and Remus, on the other hand, find kindred spirits in each other as the sane people in an otherwise rambunctious friend group. Despite James and Lily’s squabbling and Marlene and Peter’s familiar bickering at times, the group gets along quite well, and Remus wouldn’t give it up for anything.

Established in 1938, when Tom Marvolo Riddle, the boss of the now defunct Riddle crime family, formally organized the previously warring factions into what are now known as the Avery, Black, Lestrange, Malfoy, Riddle (no longer extant), & Selwyn crime families, each with demarcated territory, organizationally structured in a now-familiar hierarchy, & reporting up to the same overarching governing entity. Despite resistance from his fellow bosses, Riddle declared himself boss of all bosses, reneging on a deal he had made with Arcturus Black III, the then boss of the Black crime family, that would establish the two bosses as equals. Riddle was murdered in the summer of 1945. His murder is said to have been the result of an agreement between Arcturus Black III, Armand Malfoy II, & Caius Selwyn. The Commission, the governing entity which continues to govern Death Eaters activities in the United States & Canada, was established soon after.

While the Burke family has always been part of pureblood high society (their name being among those listed on the Sacred Twenty-Eight), there is not a surprising lot people know about them. This is not for their lack of public appearances or social contacts, no ━ the Burke family is just incredibly private, and they prefer to keep it that way. While they have not always been this way (about eight generations they were probably one of the most well-known families out there), there is definitely reasoning behind the extreme lengths they go to for keeping their privacy. The first, of course, being their immense wealth. 

The Burke family is old money, like most of the families that shared a spot in the pureblood directory of Cantankerus Nott, but many fail to grasp just how large their fortune is. With a real estate portfolio that included properties all around the world (including two castles), at least four vaults at Gringotts (and two more in other countries, in case the economy took a turn for the worst), and a jewelry connection most museums would’ve killed to get their hands on ━ even some of the other old money families would be shocked at all the assets they possessed. 

From an early age on, it is instilled by either the parents or grandparents that retaining their privacy and never acting like the nouveau riche is the most important thing when it comes to their family. They must never speak publicly about their assets, never mention where they stored their money and how, and most importantly, act humble enough to make sure no one suspects a thing. The right families would know enough about them anyway. 

Phillipa Burke (née Parkinson), was often referred to by her mother-in-law as the child she was meant to have. While Gregory was not a disappointment in his parents’ eyes, he was not as cunning as they’d wished him to be, he had a weak spine, a tendency to let things slide by. Phillipa was the opposite, which was exactly why they had chosen her to be his match. Nowadays, she is the true matriarch of the family, the old Lady Burke having passed away not two years after Adelaide was born and Lord Burke spending most of his time running his shop. Gregory handed her the reigns to their family without so much as an argument, and Phillipa keeps them all on a tight leash. 

Marcus and Tobias Burke almost right after each other, with Marcus being the firstborn and Tobias forever stuck as the middle child. Both were complete and total Mama’s boys ━ perfectly following the path Phillipa had carefully laid out for the both of them, sorted into Slytherin, marrying respectful pureblood girls their parents had picked out for them, making their career at the Ministry while their wives stayed at home taking care of the children.. There was not much special when it came to them. 

The two boys took up quite a bit of their time, which was why Adelaide didn’t arrive until 5 years after her brothers. Phillipa had wanted a girl for so long, one she could launch into society wearing beautiful gowns and dresses, one she could see carrying the Burke jewels with pride, one she could marry off to the perfect suitor and Adelaide was that girl, for a while at least ━ but not anymore. Of course, vanity is still one of her favorite sins, but Adelaide had larger ambitions now than just looking pretty and finding a good husband, larger ambitions than both of her brothers, who had their Ministry jobs practically handed to them, and she is terrified of the moment Phillipa finally notices them.

In Remus’s fifth year, while he, James, Sirius and Peter were messing around with some spell book on a lazy weekend night, he cast his first patronus. A particularly advanced piece of magic, it had taken him quite a while to master ( it was rather difficult, too, considering that his unhappy memories often eclipsed his happy ones ). However, he’d been able to latch on to one specific moment in time to produce it.

He’d been a second year, merely twelve years old, blinking groggily under the bright, sterile lights of the infirmary the morning after a full moon. To his horror, James, Sirius and Peter were by the side of his bed. They knew. They knew, and he was sure they would abandon him, and all at once Remus felt his entire world falling apart again -- until it didn’t. More specifically, they didn’t care. The three boys promised him that they didn’t think anything less of him even if he was a werewolf ( “in fact, it’s cool! you could rip any of those mean Slytherins to shreds!” “no” ) and that they still wanted to be friends with him. Even more importantly, however, they vowed to try and find a way to mitigate the suffering he experienced every full moon. The feeling of inexplicable gratitude, relief, and unadulterated happiness that flooded Remus’s heart at that moment is something that he will never forget. Even the embarrassment of breaking into tears in front of the three of them and the silliness of making a fake blood oath with red ink to seal the “vow” failed to dampen the happy memory; their affection and sacrifice for him is something that Remus knows he’ll happily spend the rest of his life trying to repay.
