Listen I'm rewatching the Dragon Prince/the Mystery of Aaravos to prepare myself mentally to watch season 5 but like... can we please talk about the Moonshadow elves just assuming that people just abandon their posts/their jobs?? Cause they did that with Rayla's parents and then again with Rayla. Like ??? hello? what the hell? why are you assuming abandonment instead of any other possible outcome? I know that there are cultural differences and such but based on what we see from other elves, they don't tend to abandon their own kind unless forced too. And if the Moonshadow village knew Rayla since she was little wouldn't they have known she would never abandon the man that took her in after her parents died? I don't know. I want to know more about why they just assume abandonment when there are obviously other outcomes to be considered.

Rayla's parents

I'm doing a rewatch to the series and Runaan said the humans (Viren and Harrow) attacked in the winter's turn (probably the winter solstice), but he said it happened four months before. Only four months. When Rayla told Callum and Ezran that she wished her parents died instead of run, it was something she thought for only few months, she things she knows about what they did only few months. When I first watched it, I thought the events with her parents happened few years ago, but she was so furious and I didn't realise how her anger is so fresh.

I won't be surprised if Rayla begged Runaan to take her with them to the assassin mission, she clearly wasn't ready, but that become personal for her, she needed to redeem herself and her parents, it's become her family duty because she thought her parents run away. I don't think Runaan should have agreed her to come, she wasn't ready, but Rayla is stubborn, she probably insisted until Runaan agreed for her to come.

Poor Rayla, think what it was for her to find out she was ghosted only half a year after her parents did, the Silvergrove erased her whole family because of mistakes they didn't do. She probably felt horrible. She dealt with so much. No wonder she left in Through The Moon, it was the first time she could think of everything that happened to her, she needed time to process things, she deserves silence and quiet and find out what happened to her parents, she dealt with so much in a very short period of time.

At least Callum and Ezran has each other to deal and process Harrow's death and they barely remember their mother, but they are not alone in the world. They also royalty so they have many people around them to helping them get through his death. Rayla has no one, Ethari can't talk to her anymore, she is all alone in this world and that something Callum and Ezran can't understand, that's why they can't help her.

I waited for an official approval for this and the new scene from the new episode of season 4 approved it. Rayla left in Callum's birthday. It's not friendly from her, but we saw in the scene that Callum has people who worry for him and baking him a cake, Rayla has none. Every birthday she waited for her parents to send her a letter, she got up really early for it. But in this birthday, it's been two weeks since she left Callum she all allone, her parents are not around anymore so she won't get any letter from them, she thinks Runaan is dead and Ethari ghosted her so she is all alone in her birthday. Rayla deserves love and happiness and everyone abandoned her. She doesn't have any letter to wait for in the birthday after Through The Moon. It's her first birthday without her parents and her adoptive parents and she doesn't have her friends for mental support.

Rewatch thoughts...

Guys... I might have been a tad bit wrong... Runaan is in the coin... Tiadrin and Lain... not so sure but i bet they are. And... the other 4 assassins... they are dead....

Their flowers aren't glowing... they have actually sunk...

And as of viren... he did use their weapons and 4 bowls of ashes for the spell to make the smoke elfs... he did not really use their ashes did he? This thought legit terrifies me... like Viren... that's dark buddy. 😬

Honestly the funniest thing about TDP to me is that Rayla for some reason always thinks Callum isn't 100% ride-or-die with her on any given situation. Seriously, she could decide she's jumping off a cliff and he'd do it too--oh wait.

I get that half of it is 'protecting' him but like. Girl he has been ready to die and kill for you since the first snake chain incident. It has not lightened up since. In fact its gotten worse. She's his special little guy and if anything happens to her he will kill everyone in the room and then himself. She physically cannot ever sacrifice herself for anyone because Callum WILL be following her straight into the afterlife in no less than a minute. I'm fully convinced he can and would go even further than Claudia and he'd barely have to think on it for five seconds before shrugging like "damn this sucks, can't believe I have to turn evil" "you literally don't have to--" "no I'm gonna"

And honestly I think that's peak teenagers first girlfriend behavior.

I love how the interviews were like "Rayla's new obsession is the coins and she will have to learn what's more important, Callum and the world or freeing her parents" for Rayla to choose the current mission right away in episode one and put the coins aside but then Callum inmediatly getting obsessed with them way more than her to the point of putting them in danger by looking for info just because she loves her very much, it's hilarious.

anyway one thing i think TDP does very very well is how it uses visual storytelling so strongly to indicate character mindset(s) and progression

Claudia's hair is the most obvious example - we don't need to be told she did something fucked up in 3x09 to bring her father back, because as soon as we see more white hair we know, from context and worldbuilding clues, that she did. It allows a lot to be communicated but not directly told, and it carries weight accordingly

Then there's more subtle ones - the sun being behind Janai when she steps up behind the horn ruins vs Karim not having one, because she is the true and fair queen and he is not, as well as her being right in how she handles matters legally and him being wrong in how he handles matters (il)legally.

There are also examples of Rayla's S1 binding - she's literally uneven/unsymmetrical and subsequently off-kilter - as a chain she has to be freed from, and how Callum has the golden bars around his wrists in his arc 2 design that also look like he's wearing permanent quasi-chains (because of course he is)

The crown of Katolis is a literally broken circle/chain, Aaravos walking around being literally heartless, how certain spells appear and a perpetual emphasis on circles (people being surrounded, objects, etc.)

There's a lot being communicated and is one of the reasons, I think, the show is so rich because our brains take it in subconsciously if nothing else, and then we can notice it more consciously on rewatches and subsequently appreciate it, and it just adds to how many layers are on screen at any given time
