I think this was already sorta addressed in Ruins of Gorlan but I can’t stop thinking about how fucking funny this sequence of events is. Will doesn’t know jack shit about his parents and wants to go to battleschool to feel closer to his father in some way. He is (somewhat brutally) rejected from battleschool. He becomes Halt’s apprentice and he’s like “hey do I get to learn sword fighting? It’s kinda the only thing I have to remember my dead father” and Halt is like “bitch thinks rangers carry swords lol”. And then the next fucking ranger Will meets has a fucking sword.

I need EVERYONE to shut up and start TALKING ABOUT THE BOAR SCENE. Book one. Ruins of Gorlan. The first time Will is in real danger, the first time we see WHY he was chosen as a rangers apprentice. The first time that Halt, stern-faced, greybearded, Mr “I hate everything except for coffee and my horse”, Mr “why do apprentices ask so many questions”, shows that he sees Will as more than just an annoying 15 year old. The first time that we get proof that Halt and Will’s relationship is more than mentor & apprentice, that it’s father & son. Will puts himself in the line of danger to save a boy who’s been bullying him for his whole life, and instead of crying out for help and breaking under the pressure of being about to die, he keeps fighting and accepts it. And Halt saves him and Will can’t help the tears of relief that come over him, he can’t help but bury his face in halts cloak. Halt literally jumps off Abelard and hugs him and holds him tight and doesn’t let go. It’s the first time Halt remembers that Will is always going to be in danger. And how Will reacts to Halt saving him shows that even though Halt hasn’t shown any kind emotion to him at all, Will considers him a safe place, a safe person. I hate them and this series they make me sick and it’s awful and it’s all I can ever think about

Ruins of Gorlan scene
Anyone going to talk about how Halt dead-ass jumped off Abelard to go comfort Will? This scene needs to be talked about more often.
Alright, here I go with another ranting/tangent.
When we had the boar scene, Will proved the reason why he was a ranger's apprentice. Even though he was going to flipping die, he still fought, he accepted it and went to protect the one guy that had made his life in the Ward a miserable existence, bullied him all ward his life. It sucks that that isn't mentioned more, but anyways, when the first boar came out, Halt neutralized it and basically did nothing.
But then, the second boar came on out, Halt not only killed it, but went to comfort Will. Not giving a fig about what others thought, especially about his tough-guy appearance. He let Will cry into him.
Now, I don't think people get how important physical connection is to a child. Growing up will strangers and adults who don't understand you like your parents would've, if they had been alive, the only touch and hugs that I think the ward kids would've gotten was from each-other. But it's not the same as having an adult hug and support you.
Imagine how comforting it must've been for Will to get that. And Halt too. This scene shows how close Halt already felt to Will, he doesn't connect or comfort anyone like he does with Will. This helped further their father/son relationship. Awesome. But, what did Halt get out of it?
For Halt to rush over like that, imagine how scared he must've felt. Also, not only was it the raw fear of Will dying, but I like to think that Halt was terrified that he'd fail Will's parents.
Also, Halt has been living on his own for several years. And, Ferris had been the favorite, so Halt must've been ignored at sometimes. So this connection was good for both of them.
I mean, when Will went off, Halt felt like he had no purpose. He was just mopin' around, missing his son.
So, this is where we first see Dad Halt. I don't think that the other Battleschool peps comforted Horace the same way Halt did. Halt just dropped everything and ran to protect his boy.
Gotta love that.
Halt would do anything to keep Will from harm. As proven over and over.
How proud do y'all think Halt was of Will after he got over the attack of nearly losing Will. I swear he had a heart-attack.

Okay so, I'm currently listening to the ruins of Gorlan audiobook, and I find that I notice very different things when listening to it rather than reading
Some things so far:
Aralds apparent suprise at Lady Pauling laughing with the bunny prank. I choose to believe this is not, in fact, Arald being suprised Pauline thinks this funny, as they have known eachother for very long, but more so that Arald is suprised she can't diplomatically surpress it
HALT WAS WEARING HIS CLOAK WHEN WILL STOLE THE PAPER AND WAS BROUGHT TO THE BARON!! You cannot tell me it didn't hide his face full of fears and uncertainty when Will didn't immediately accept his offer, especially because of the sense of debt he undoubtedly has toward will.

underrated scenes from ruins of gorlan
(rereading the entire RA series so prepare for a whole slew of these)
- when Will is angsting over Choosing Day in the beginning and an owl lands next to him in the tree, and Will turns to it and says “at least you know who you are” LMAO
- Halt telling Arald that Will climbed the keep tower “easy as you get on your horse in the morning. easier, in fact”
- the Harvest Day scene for being the literal only time where we get to see all the Ward kids as a friend group. jesus christ this is the content i need in my life
- the scene where Rodney observes Horace at drill practice and interrupts because Horace did a Very Cool Thing with his sword and no one else realizes until Rodney surreptitiously spells it out for the instructors by running Horace through a special sequence (it gave me actual chills this time idk why?? horace is just SO COOL)
- speaking of Horace, the time he gets to absolutely own his former bullies
- Will asks Halt “are we there yet??” for the tenth time in an hour on the way to the Gathering
- Will goes by himself back to Redmont when Halt is hunting the Kalkara and it’s his very first solo mission and I am so proud of him!!
- the first time Halt smiles is when Will turns down a knighthood (everything he’s ever wanted in life) and says “I am a Ranger” and Will stops short, and their dynamic is EVERYTHING
- Halt explains Will’s origin story and gives him the bronze oakleaf and for the first time in his life, he’s at peace.

it’s so funny to me that the only intimidating villain in this whole goddamn series is morgarath lol
there are like 15 books now, there’s a new villain almost every book— if not ever 2-3 books. but the only one that got good ground on the intimidation factor was Morgarath. why is he the only fucking scary villain in the series make it make sense 😭😭😭

Remember how I got another friend hooked on Rangers Apprentice? Well, today he sat down next to me and excitedly told me that he sat in the library during the entitety of lunch so he wouldn't have to check out the book and read all the way up to chapter 6. I then drew these two things for him (ignore the top left drawing, that was me making fun of him)

What if Halt got killed by the Kalkara?
The first scenario I want to work on is set in the first part of Ranger's Apprentice Ruins of Gorlan by John Flanagan.
In the book, they manage to defeat the Kalkara without serious injuries. But what if the Kalkara had inflicted more wounds on Halt than just the one on his thigh and he ended up bleeding to death?
In our hypothesis, the battle proceeds in much the same way. Halt slays the first Kalkara almost on his own and the two knights finish him off. The second one is trickier. Arald gets injured by it and Rodney is disabled under its gaze. At the end, Will kills him with the burning arrow.
Then, we reach the point where we deviate from the book for the first time. For Will hasn’t discovered Halt yet. As Rodney takes care of Baron Arald, he is desperately searching for his tutor. At the same time, Gilan reaches the makeshift camp with his plough horse and helps Will immediately .
Sooner or later, they find him lying on the ground between the old castle walls. He might already be dead, or they might keep him company in the last minutes of his life. In the latter case, the two apprentices (then and now) would probably try to save Halt - to stop the bleeding at any cost. But he dies.
At least in the knowledge that he could stop Morgarath again and that the two persons, who means the most to him, were not harmed. One can only imagine Will and Gilan lingering over Halts' corpse, tears in their eyes and holding on to each other.
Halts' funeral ceremony was simple, without much splendour. Just like his life. After all, he never wanted recognition for his acts. Arald, Rodney, Pauline and a handful others had come, as well as Will, Gilan and Crowley.
They bury his corpse somewhere deep in the forest - somewhere where only few people would wander around and disturb his peace. His Grave is only adorned by a small stone.
Here lies Halt O'Carrick. Ranger, hero and our second father.
The ceremony in Will's honour is far less under such good spirits than in the book. Nevertheless, Will receives the offer from Baron Arald to join Battleschool. Will rejects. He will carry on the inheritance of his teacher. It’s the right decision for him, even if he doesn't know what will happen next.
At this time, Crowley is still in Redmont. There’s that scene in my head, in which Gilan has already reached out to Crowley because of Will. He offered to take him as his apprentice, so Will wouldn't have to stay with a stranger. At the same time, Gilan already knows everything about the fief. Therefore, he could be easily moved to it.
So, Will got apprenticed to Gilan. However, he wouldn’t be able to replace Halt as Wills tutor - or as Will's second father. He wouldn't try either. In any case, a bond would be created between them that no one could ever break.
With the completion of his apprenticeship, Will would be given Halt's silver oak leaf.
A final tribute to his old tutor.
