March 11, 2024 - Monday | Ramadan Challenge 1/30
Today was the last day to submit the tests for my Islamic classes so I listened to 5 hours worth of lectures at 1.75 speed to catch up and take the tests 😅 my Ramadan goals this year are pretty chill, I’m not trying to overachieve, just trying to be better than my usual baseline.
a habit to build: praying sunnahs, a habit to break: delaying salah, accomplishment I hope to gain: finish reading / annotating at least (2) of my Islamic books 📚

28 March 2024, Thursday
Today was the last working day before we enter a two week long holiday for the last ten days of Ramadan followed by Eid ul Fitr :) It was a productive week at work alhamdulillah and I’m glad I was able to make the most of it !
Day 18: the second 10 days is almost over! Are you part of any islamic communities during Ramadan? What about outside of Ramadan?
I am very grateful to be living in a Muslim country - though of course everyone practices to different levels. I’m not part of any Islamic communities during or outside of Ramadan per se and that’s part of why I started my substack publication. I felt like I needed a little community of like minded Muslims and somewhere I could share my faith related musings. I also do love all my mutuals here on tumblr and the Islamic posts I see on here.

ramadan mubarak!! and thank you @notetaeker for creating this challenge again 🤍 it was one of my favorite things about last year's ramadan
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Day 1: What are your goals this Ramadan? Possible suggestions: 1 habit to build, 1 habit to break, and one accomplishment you hope to gain!
1 habit to build: morning and evening dhikr! a much needed source of tranquility
1 habit to break: *sigh* mindless scrolling
1 accomplishment to gain: i'm just hoping to pass my exams (which are going to be in the last week of ramadan) while accomplishing my usual ramadan goals (reading one chapter of the quran every day)

Ramadan Challenge 2024, Day 1
What are your goals this Ramadan? Possible suggestions: 1 habit to build, 1 habit to break, and one accomplishment you hope to gain!
It's early on the first day as I write this, my suhoor hasn't even digested yet.  I wish I had a nice answer for this question, but the fact is I'm just trying to survive it in one piece.  Ramadan this year falls in a somewhat difficult time for my family where we can't afford, well, time.  It's wishful thinking to assume our schedule will allow for any additional thing when we're already living in half-hour chunks from the moment we wake up to the moment we fall asleep.
That being said, I do have goals! They're just not what you'd expect, like trying to do a khatma.  That's unlikely.  Instead, besides just trying to survive, I'm really hoping that the schedule change during Ramadan allows me to implement any one of the changes I'm trying to do anyway.
1. Be more mindful when I read Quran (even 5 minutes of mindfulness is better for me than 20 minutes of blind reading).
2. Be more consistent in my son's education at home (30-40 minutes skills work before school isn't that much time per day but it'll have a huge impact over time!).
3. Carve out time in the day for my physical health (even if you manage 5-10 minutes of walking before or after futoor, it's something!).
4. Do better at housekeeping this mess (~1-2 hours regularly or daily beats 4 hours once or twice a week).
5. Dedicate time to support husband's Ramadan goals (sitting with him for 15 minutes to keep him on track is still more than letting him rely on his poor executive functioning skills).
6. Tackle the backlog.  There's always a backlog, but right now a few items that have been left undone too long are having consequences, especially the things affecting my health and my family.
7. Mental health.  The way I've been letting it decline hasn't been helping anyone. It's hard work to sit with your demons, but it's Ramadan, so they're all chained up!
8. Bite the bullet around well-meaning but ultimately tactless family and/or friends. Socializing is difficult.
I wish I had time to do all of them, but getting even one or two going would be nice.
They're mostly the kinds of goals that are stepping stones on the way to more luxurious, privileged goals like having the time, health, and resources to attend taraweeh daily.  Maybe in another year or two, inshallah we'll see easier Ramadans.
There is nothing more I can do for our brothers and sisters in Palestine than what I'm already doing.  If nothing else, put in a daily click.
Oh, and I really like this goal setting sheet from this year.

March 10, 2024 - Sunday | Ramadan Prep III
I love that the concept of time in Islam is always that it goes on. You can't delay Ramadan, or prayers, or Eid no matter how unready you feel. No matter what is happening in your life or in anyone else's, prayer goes on, Ramadan goes on as does life. It's a kind of stability you come to appreciate when everything else feels scattered in the wind.

March 20, 2024 - Friday  | Ramadan Challenge 10/30
Pictured: Migraine essentials and early blooms of the season. Alhamdulillah feeling better by the time of this post!
Taraweeh Tip: If you’re at the masjid, follow along with the recitation in your mus-haf. If you’re not sure where they’re up to, ask someone! If you’re praying at home, read from your qur’an! It’s not an obligatory prayer so you’re allowed to hold up your mushaf and read from there. Doing that instead of just speeding thru rakats with the same few juz amma surahs you usually read will make such a big difference trust me. Ofc this is advice to myself first and foremost 🌱

March 6 - Wednesday | Ramadan Prep I
My bestie came over and we were old ladies together. I made her a cup of tea, we watched some of the Omar series, and then we just say there, her with her cramps and me with my headache just talking and living our best lives💞
This Ramadan I look forward to the unexpected. I have no idea how it's going to go, but every Ramadan is a beautiful experience and journey so I'm going to bank on that. Allahumma ballighna Ramadan 🌙

March 17-18 2024  | Ramadan Challenge 7-8/30
Currently going thru a rough patch w/ illness. Alhamdulillah for everything though. Ramadan continues so we must try to continue our efforts to gain reward despite everything. May Allah give us tawfiq.
My ideal suhoor item is a giant bowl of milk, rice, and mango/banana ✨ and ideal iftar item is all the fried bengali foods galore: beguni, bora, chickpeas + potatoes, muri (aka all the things I can’t eat rn lol)

March 23, 2024 - Saturday  | Ramadan Challenge 13/30
Day 12: Most challenging thing about Ramadan and how do you try to overcome it?
Nowadays it’s actually fasting that’s the challenge. Subhanallah in the past it used to be trying to do all the stuff on my list lol I try to overcome it by keeping myself on a schedule and taking it easy when I’m not feeling well.
Day 13: What aspects of the qur'anic science have you explored:
I absolutely love tafsir. As a writing/literature teacher, analyzing meaning in between the lines is literally the funnest thing for me and that’s what tafsir is. Honestly when I first introduce literary analysis to my students, I tell them we are basically doing tafsir of the books lol
I love qur’an memorization too and I definitely want to focus more on memorization these days. It’s actually so much fun for me and my silly little productivity obsessed self I soooo looove trackable progress and improving and increasing and it’s the best feeling to encounter memorized ayahs in recitation/ a lecture etc

March 13, 2024 - Wednesday | Ramadan Challenge 3/30
Started my yearly Ramadan journaling today for the 4th year! That’s actually what my OG Ramadan challenge for myself was (journaling and posting everyday). It was a record of each day of Ramadan and I t’s a perfect way to prevent the memories of each Ramadan from blending into each other✨
My favorite worship currently is reciting qur’an, though last year I said it was dhikr! I have actually always loved reading qur’an, and there’s something about Ramadan that makes you want to just keep reading Qur’an forever if given the chance ✨ Maybe it’s because of the absence of shaitan lol May Allah give us the tawfiq to keep a good relationship with the qur’an even after Ramadan ends.

March 16, 2024 - Saturday | Ramadan Challenge 6/30
Biggest life lesson or advice you would give to others:
The most important thing you can ever do for yourself is build up a good group of friends/family. Invest in your relationships no matter how difficult it is to fit in time. Because lots of things happen on this journey of life and different things will strike different ppl at different times and you will need people to lean on emotionally, physically, etc. I know we are in an age of independence and everyone living alone but no matter how much screentime we consume and advice we can get from youtube videos nothing replaces real humans who care about you and you care for them! A single smile from someone you know can do more for your problems than 100 informative youtube videos.
Personally I think sometimes as studyblrs we can become so engrossed in our studies and goals we may sacrifice time with loved ones without batting an eyelid. But we need those relationships!

March 12, 2024 - Tuesday | Ramadan Challenge 2/30
This year I probably have the least obligations because the ones I do have are flexible. Last year for example, I had meetings for my internship literally during iftar hours, and then the year before that I was teaching all morning and sleeping in the evenings. However it is also true that I couldn’t fast a lot of last Ramadan because I was sick, so for this year, I’m just grateful if I get to fast at all, InshaAllah.

March 14, 2024 - Thursday | Ramadan Challenge 4/30
I read thru last years Ramadan journaling and I’m so grateful for the fact that I have doing it for the past few years. Nothing gives better insight about how I’m really doing right now than reading the accounts of my previous self lol
An ayah from the Qur'an that impacted you deeply (this year): وَٱسْتَعِينُوا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَٱلصَّلَوٰةِ ۚ وَإِنَّهَا لَكَبِيرَةٌ إِلَّا عَلَى ٱلْخَـٰشِعِينَ (٤٥) ٱلَّذِينَ يَظُنُّونَ أَنَّهُم مُّلَـٰقُوا۟ رَبِّهِمْ وَأَنَّهُمْ إِلَيْهِ رَٰجِعُونَ (٤٦)
“And seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed it is a difficult except for the humble who are certain that they will meet their Lord and that they will return to him.”
This Ayah been helping me a lot this week because I’m struggling a lot. I love that it gives me a list of things to do:
Seek help
Patience/perseverance
Prayer
Accept that it is difficult and Allah knows that it is because He literally acknowledges it right here
Remind myself that everyone will return to Allah and get what they deserve- whether it’s reward for persevering or punishment for oppressing ppl

March 15, 2024 - Friday  | Ramadan Challenge 5/30
My most treasured recent Ramadan memory is now the Ramadan we all spent indoors during the first year of covid. In our family my brother led taraweeh everyday, and we finished the Qur’an (!) and we all prepared for iftar and sat to have iftar together and Alhamdulilah it was very festive in that way and gave us so much joy in that bleak covid time 💕

April 1, 2024 - Monday  | Ramadan Challenge 22/30
Lol I ran out of pics so here’s some pics from December. I accompanied my mom to the local Bangladeshi supermarket that's stocked full of giant fish, Bengali vegetables, and my childhood snacks (every few months I risk it all for a pack of biscuits ngl)
Day 23: Are you making dua for anything specific? (Any dua you want us to make for you?) Please make dua for my health and the health of my parents 😔 and the tawfiq to travel / go to umrah. That’s my main dua this year: health.
